Buying a GSI CREOS PS-771? Watch this first

  • This video is a full and comprehensive review of the Mr. Hobby GSI Creos PS-771 airbrush. I have to say that out of any airbrush I've tested, this one is nearly identical to my favorite airbrush of all time, the Iwata micron. For half the price of the micron, the GSI Creos is an outstanding detail airbrush. Within this video I go over all the information I'd want to know about an airbrush before purchasing it including airbrush speed, spray pattern, controllability, and responsiveness. I also included a paint demo of a still life to talk about my opinions. Hope this one is helpful to some of you and thanks for watching.

    Used this video even 2 years later to purchase this and upgrade the needle from a CM-B. I used another video of yours to get my H&S Infinity as well. We were even talking about your channel in a local hobby shop in Montana today. The first time I went and the owner and I both talked about how much we enjoy and respect your channel for a solid 20 minutes. But we did have a hard time remembering the channel name, but we could both easily describe content, and both knew exactly the channel we were discussing! Heh, anyway, the BEST airbrushing channel is on here. Thank you for the excellent content!

      wow that is so nice of you! thanks so much for your very kind words. Your airbrush collection sounds epic with a cm-b, a 771, and an infinity! 3 of my personal favorites. Curious to hear your opinion- which detail airbrush is your go-to? I love everything about this 771 and have been using it none stop over the last month.

    • @dirtyDJdoes

      Absolutely, I actually do miniatures exclusively, and when I started, I was using a crappy Harbor Frieght gun that was frustrating. So I found your channel doing research years ago, and here I am. My girlfriend does lots of still art traditional brush painting on canvas and started in airbrushing following your videos, too, especially the paid content videos.
      I was using an Infinity v2 .15 as my primary detail brush, and she was using an Iwata HP-CS .30. I found the trigger response to be really lacking on the Infinity, even compared to the mid level HP-CS. So I did the little mod on the Infinity where you put the 2 seals in the trigger assembly. It helped, but I got the Creos from this video and come on... It makes the Infinity feel like a Harbor Freight gun as for atomization and trigger feel are concerned. The .18 Creos is much better than the .15 Infinity. Granted, the teardown of the Infinity is exceptional. I only paid $175 for the Creos from Spraygunner. So now my girlfriend uses the Infinity. But the Arkhitect Spaceship Advanced Research Colonizer is what everyone loves to see in action, the best focal piece. Have you ever seen one of those?!

    • @theartworkshop
      @theartworkshop  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@dirtyDJdoes Awesome! Yes, with miniatures I'd imagine a detail airbrush is a must. So much detail and work that going into those minis! It's pretty incredible. I know what you mean about the creso 771. It's just one of the best detail airbrushes out there and everyone seems to love it as well. For $175, I have no idea how they do it- quality build and perfect performance. I paid like $220-$230 when it came out and I couldn't be happier with it. Arkhitect colonizer is great! I've seen some really nice builds of it.

      You know it, I love it, but it's not like your realism stuff. I'd 100% pay for you to teach classes on how to do some of the stuff you do, more specifically tailored. I would pay for myself and at least one other person if you ever decide to do anything like that. You're talented at teaching, and I don't believe anybody can ever master an art unless they can teach it.
      I couldn't believe how cheap that 771 was, I just don't see how anyone can compete with the cost of their guns right now for performance. I know that Harbor Freight just released a new gun for about 70 bucks called the "Black Widow." I was curious to know what your thoughts are on that? Could definitely make for a good video. Thanks.

    I've had this airbrush for a few weeks now and I couldn't be happier. It's a revelation. All of the things I was worried about (length, weight, cup size) aren't problems at all. Performance-wise it's every bit as good as my Iwata CMB was and MUCH better than my CMB was after a decade of abuse by me. I couldn't be happier with my purchase.

    Iwata custom micron and the PS771 are both "micron" design made by a manufacturing company call BB rich. BB rich acquired the original micron design from olympus. Hence why all the current "micron" line on the market have interchangeable parts. You mention it is a clone or omarge, infact it is actually the same pen.
    Extra info current micron on the market:
    Rich pen (manufacturer's own line, 0.3 needles)
    Omlypus reborn (passion project for the original design 50 years go, not as good as the current iterations)
    Mr hobby/ Creos (ps771, ps770)
    Iwata (cmcp, cm b)

    In the spray gun world, Iwata has the tulip head patented. It's pretty much a a fluid tip that is split up to 4 tulips. And the head that this airbrush comes with resembles the tulip.
    So I'd say... these are literally made by Iwata. Just as more of a budget line. Sort of like blue point from snap on.

    Anyone know the difference between the 770 and 771? They seem very similar (aside from needle/nozzle size. One is 2mm the other is 1.5mm). I ask because the 770 is SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper, so I would obviously prefer that if its otherwise the same. Thanks

      771 has a glossy surface just like any other Japanese airbrushes, 770 is special cuz its surface is matt, definitely a bad design, so the company redesigned it and named it 771, their performance has no difference.

      Thanks! My best advice is to use a paint made for airbrushes. It makes a world of difference, paints like golden high flow acrylics or anything by createx. Straining paint isn't all that necessary and never needed for a new paint bottle. I only do it when a bottle is old and has dried paint on the cap/nozzle. hope this helps.

    Thank you for the great reviews. You offer some of the best reviews I've seen on TH-cam! I actually have a PS-771 and enjoy it a lot. I do notice, however, the needle point does not track in the center of the nozzle. The point is off center from the full-open position all the way to full closed. I assume a centered needle is important for optimal spray pattern shape. Do you have any suggestions for remedying this? I have new needles that roll w/o issue on a plate of glass; no bends. My .15mm H&S Infinity needle's point does track right through the center of the nozzle the entire length of travel. Thanks again!!

    • @theartworkshop
      @theartworkshop  ปีที่แล้ว

      thanks so much! Yes, the needle and nozzle should be perfectly centered, otherwise you'll get an uneven spray. Maybe the airbrush is still under warranty so that it can be replaced. Besides that, the only solution I have is to replace the nozzle and the needle with new ones.

      Thanks! A question is never a bother. I use these 190m strainers amzn.to/3tkJcbL when the bottle has been sitting for a few weeks. If the paint is new, there is no reason to strain but if it has been opened sometimes paint dries at the top and falls into the bottle.If this gets into your airbrush, it's a real pain to clean out.

    You should take the time to find out what a MAC valve is and does. Its not what you think. Its not a regulator, which is what you use to control air pressure, though it does control air pressure. But its real function is something else and what that is varies depending on the setting on the MAC, the viscosity of the paint and the pressure at the regulator.

      Hey Ryland! I have a recommendation I'd like you to try. If you remove the rear handle you'll see that adjustment screw for the trigger spring tension. Try tightening that all the way down. That usually helps form a better seal with the needle & nozzle. I usually have these down pretty tight to help prevent the problem you are having. Another tip to help seat the nozzle is that when I insert the needle, I push it forward until I feel it make contact with the nozzle without using and pressure on it. Then I'll slightly rotate it to the right before tightening down the needle chucking nut. I demonstrate how I do that at the end of this video (around the 15:30 mark). See if that helps! th-cam.com/video/zg4yPaWi5hY/w-d-xo.html

      The ps-771 is a legend of an airbrush. I use a custom micron .18mm needle for it. It is the one for the cm-b or cm-sb.

      @@theartworkshop thank you sir. just found and subscribed to your channel. Great content and lessons. I also fully agree with you on the sotar 20/20 and run the slim and small cup in the fine needle. fabulous brushes and underrated. Still on the fence about a takumi micron but Im sure my airbrush addiction will win out soon 😁. Appreciate the reply and ordering a needle now.

      @@duanemarshall9486 Thanks so much. I really appreciate that! Honestly, the takumi and the ps-771 are so close that I'd be happy with either one any day. Equal airbrushes in my opinion.

    Hi I'm in the UK and they're around £280 but on ebay they're £180 from Japan could you give me advice weather these are good or bad TIA 😊

      £280 is a very high markup. That is nearly double the price here in the US. £180 is what it should be, so I'd go with that.

    thanks for the very informative review! just curious about the needle swap you mentioned, is iwata micron's .18 needle compatible with PS771? no need to change the nozzel or tail or any other parts?

    • @theartworkshop
      @theartworkshop  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks man. I use the the Iwata micron cm-b/sb .18 needle. I leave the nozzle assembly as it is on the PS771. Both are .18 so it's the same fit, just higher quality.

    Great video! New subscriber today. Is the GSI CRESO PS-771 the same as the 770 what's the difference? Only I currently live in Thailand. And when I put a search in for the 771 only the 770 came up for sale. But I still will have to have it shipped from Japan if I am interested to buy it. Also, what brush paints do you recommend for animal portraits. Love all the vids you have created. You are a good, clear teacher of the craft. Keep up the good work.

      Thank you and welcome! There is no difference other than the matte vs. chrome. The internals are exactly the same as far as I know. Go with whichever one you like more or the best price.
      For animal portraits I have to recommend createx illustration colors or com-art. Both are really good for erasing and scratching techniques, very important for animal paintings.

      The 771 is newer, is an updated ver. I believe is when the manufacturer introduced a tri outflow design in the nozzle. Iwata also switch to the new design aswell. In the end they both come from the same factory, and they must have changed the mold/mill for the head piece and no longer make the older single outflow.

    My brand new 771 had leaks when I did a soap test. I had to seal the threads.

      so did my $500 micron takumi. I hate seeing it, but sadly it seems to be pretty common.

      @@theartworkshop Yeah, as of now, my Creos is back in Florida with the Spraygunner team. It will not spray consistently no matter what I do. Ease the trigger back and it might give you paint, might not. More often not. Yet they tell me they can't recreate the issue. They're probably just putting water through it. It looks like I'll have to pony up 60 bucks for a new head assembly for a brush that never worked in the 1st place. So from all the reviews I've seen, it's a good brush. But if their is an issue, you may just be on your own.

      @@Dude_Slick I’m having this same issue sadly. I was so excited to have my first detail brush but I can’t seem to figure out why it only sprays intermittently. Hope you were able to find a solution.
