Thanks! I remembered your question about painting mountains while working on this video, so I figured I'd paint in some simple ones. It's not much but hopefully it helps. I'll probably be adding in mored advanced ones in future airbrush reviews, so stay posted!
Excellent review, I've been wanting a detail airbrush for awhile and thought the only options were priced around the Harder Steenback and the like. Looks like this will save me some bucks and server my purposes well enougth.
I have been using the Chrome Renegade series airbrush for a while and love it . However was looking for something else to play with . Your review was great thank you for putting us in the know.
spot on review. It really is a great airbrush and very comfortable to hold and use. I would definitely recommend this airbrush for anybody looking for a affordable detail gun. I use mine regularly right along with my other detail guns that cost at least twice as much and like it better than some.
First of all thank you so much for becoming a member and supporting the channel, Duane! Very generous of you. I agree with you about the sotar. It really is one of the best airbrushes available today. I honestly think that everyone who airbrushes should have one. It will always be one of my favorite detail airbrushes.
@@theartworkshop Your very welcome. Your content and tutorials are top notch. Ive been airbrushing off and on for 40 years mostly as a hobby and completely self taught through library books and magazines back in the day. I plan on using your portrait tutorials quite extensively as ive never had a bit of formal art and quite frankly that style is so far outside my wheelhouse Ive never even attempted it. But alas its time to expand my art into yet another style.
@@duanemarshall9486 I love to hear it!! 40 years of airbrushing is incredibly impressive. There are plenty more of intermediate and advanced ones in the works, so hopefully they help you out.
Great review, I've had one of their OG Sotar 20/20 which after 19 yrs. is great as parts are easy to get and inexpensive. The "newer" 20/20 has a redesigned head assm. from the OG to reduce an air leak issue that happens, tho easily fixed with bees wax. I have two other Sotar airbrush's and love em all,but am wanted your opinion of the new Sotar "Slim" 20/20. I am a scale modeler and have issues with color cups being in line of sight in very detail work. And so this Slim model looks like a win-win but before I buy one I'd enjoy your thoughts on it. Thanks. Tim
the slim is awesome and performs exactly the same. Over time though, I realized that I actually prefer the larger cup on the normal sotar. The slim only holds a few drops of paint and I constantly find myself accidently overfilling it with paint dripping down the sides. Still a great brush, but no cup is limiting for what I need.
A very detailed review👍! Which Sotar airbrush do you think is better for painting small parts with or without a 2ml cup? Does the 2ml cup interfere with detail work? Thanks for the review.
Once again a great video!!! For its cost it is a no brainer even when adding the extra money for importing it. Spare parts are not pricey either. I like using mine with the two prong aircap and the high roller trigger. The two prong aircap is also more "concentric" with the needle compared to the aircap that came from the factory which lacks the protective prongs but this might just be my copy. Removing the aircap can produce some stippling/spattering effects without any hassle. I only have one question. How old is the airbrush that you are taking apart? I got mine a few months ago and the head assembly is different. In mine there is the aircap, the nozzle holder and then the nozzle. No teflon seal because the larger part which is closer to the body of the airbrush in the assembly that you are removing in mine seems to be integrated to the body. The manual that came with it shows that difference as well.
Excellent points! Although the airbrush I'm reviewing here is new and never used, I did purchase this one about 4 years ago. It seems that Badger updated the design by welding one part of the nozzle to the body of the airbrush so that the PTFE seal is no longer needed. Toward the end of the video, you'll see I show the "slim" model; it's also the version I use for the paint tests. It is the same as the original, but one is welded where the other unscrews. I wish Badger released more information about their changes and updates. It seems to be a gamble to which model you will receive. They did the same thing with the paint cup designs 10-12 years ago.
I was really looking forward to using this airbrush when I'd ordered one a few years ago... was very disappointed when it wouldn't even spray water when I took it out to test it - the hobby shop I ordered from referred me over to badger support for repair or replacement, but once getting in contact with them I was no longer enthused. Having to pay to ship the unit to badger to have them fix it when it was brand new in the box pretty much soured my opinion of their products moving forward. I'll stick with my iwata airbrushes. The machining quality really is a low on these.
I’m thinking about picking this up from spraygunner with their cordless compressor. Any opinions on the conversion kits? Under 20 bucks sounds good for a .5 or .7 needle being able to use the brush as a workhorse for base coats and priming while also having the .2 mm for the fine work
I have this airbrush and I can’t seem to solve the thinner/to paint ratio or psi when spraying fine lines or detail work with acrylic paints. I have no issues when spraying base coats or large surfaces. I get a lot of paint sputtering. Any suggestions?
Badger pain brushes are great but I absolutely hate the trigger assembly. I don't know what you are doing with your airbrushes, I hardly ever need to replace any parts on them, been airbrushing since the 1960's. I love your videos, BTW.
I would just stick with the same brands for replacements. Not worth possibly losing performance or causing damage to the nozzle by switching to different needles.
Nice concise review..................However there is absolutely no reason or excuse to break any part of your airbrush. I had my Badger Patriot 105 for almost 18/19 years, Never broke or replaced one part, and still using the same needle. And yes it has been used a lot.
Min 4:22, "the first that I am painting is an oversimplified portrait, this is basically like a sketch".. And he does a masterpiece in 45 seconds lol 😂😂
Hello, could you recommend this airbrush for a scale modeller? I am thinking about using it for freehanding unusual camouflage on small scale plastic models.
I have been checking airbrushes of late and I am interested in trying but as a mixed medium artist, I wanted to ask if it is possible/safe to use watercolours with an airbrush.
It's best to stick with an acrylic paint made for an airbrush. Pigments and dyes in some watercolors can be very unsafe to spray. Your health is way more important than anything else, so go with an airbrush paint to stay on the safe side.
Dalla Badger mi arrivano dagli States, nel 2024 il Sotar 20/20 e il Renegade RK-1 Krome, vediamo come lavorano, che abituato ad aerografi giapponesi e tedeschi.
Can you introduce the MadWorks Airbrush? Taiwan airbrush It is almost the cheapest among good airbrushes Compared to iwata, h&s, hobby, badger Can't provide a good painting, but definitely not inferior to the former in terms of models. Greetings from Taiwan Google translate, a little weird, sorry.
Badger brushes are made like tanks but the finish work was always where they cut corners. I have a 150XF from 1988 and it's still going strong. It lacks triple chrome plating and the fancy polishing work but the part of the brush that matters is very precisely made. The part of the brush that doesn't matter is simply left alone since it doesn't matter. That's the mindset at Badger for those who believe Badger is trash as I've heard some say before. I suppose they just don't waste their time trying to appease the corksniffers. I also have the Iwata HP-C. I use both brushes and like both of them. An airbrush is a tool not a fetish object.
I think that is very well said. I love badger airbrushes as well. Especially this one- the sotar 20/20 will always be one of my favorite airbrushes ever made. The tank analogy is spot on!!
recommend an airbrush for model ships where larger area coverage is a priority. not really fine detail, and definately not portrature. I have a 105 patriot which is pretty good and a krome renegade which is crap. (nothing but trouble with it)
I just started airbrushing. My brother sent me this really cheap set to get started. I found that it was a bit frustrating at first, but I'm slowly getting the hang of it. So with that said, I just bought a Sotar 20/20 (used) off eBay. I paid $45 for it. It just got here today, but I can't use it as of yet because it doesn't have the adapter for a hose on it - I'm hoping I ordered the right one from amazon. However, I noticed there are conversion kits out there for this airbrush. Should I pick those up? Also, mine didn't come with a cap or the little wrench - as I said, it's used. Can you suggest what I should do with this brush before using it? I don't have the wrench to take off the top portion to check it. It looks pretty clean overall, the person said they used it once in the auction. Here is the link to the auction - I seriously hope i got a good buy: www.ebay.com/itm/275535143338

the conversation kits are great. I had one set up with the large tip back in the day and it worked so well with thicker paints and a higher airspeed.

wow, that is awesome! I agree, I should break them as often as do. Thanks for the comment!
Question can the needle of the Sotar could be use in an Iwata? Since it seems to be a good quality and not so expensive.

Why not use white ink instead of paint?

Give it the high roller trigger and the 20/20 rivalizes with the chameleon or the micron.
