Best eating cat fish are about 24 inches long. Once they get to big they get a stronger tasting. they are still good to eat though but from my personal experience for channel cat is 24 to 30 is best. Plenty of fillet and wonder full mild taste. I never eat blues, i release them. not knocking it but they were extremely rare in the Ohio for years. I grew up fishing this river in south east Ohio and when I was kid you couldn't catch much of any thing but cat fish and carp because nothing else could survive in it. It's much beter now and we need to keep regulations in place to preserve our natural resources. It's a sad day when you can't feed your self off of a great river if you desire to.

Don't matter what size .... I always soak all my fillet in sink water and ice it down 24hr before fish fry .. change water every 6 ... on last change add a bottle of lemon juice to water . Rinse again ....enjoy ... bon appetite !

When I was just 9, Daddy let me enter the local park pond fishing tournament for kids. We couldn't find any worms in the garden bed, so Mom I gave me three biscuits from a can. I didn't catch a big fish; however, I caught many of them that day. None were big enough to keep. Then last year for my 66th birthday, I went fishing with a friend. I had a five pack of biscuits in the fridge. I caught a 4.78 pound cat on my first drop cast off the pier. The gentleman who took me fishing only caught a 2 pounder on his bait choice!

I have to say Steve, one of the things that really gets my adrenaline pumping when I'm out on the water, is when a trophy cat makes my rod tip dance and splash on the lake's surface. I've only had one cat that had these kind of biceps on him. Lol. Steve you are such a lucky guy. To be able to have the knowledge you do and the success that you have is awesome. I would give anything for just one fishing trip with ya. As far as mussels go, do cats target these in rivers as a food source? The New River where I live in Pulaski, VA has a lot of these mussels in it. Is there any techniques to finding where the largest abundance of these mussels would be in a body of water? Anyways great video Steve. Whether your catching bait like skipjack and mooneye, fishing for daytime flatheads, pulling a controlled drift for blues, or just a catfish tip video, I love them all. I only hope your other subscribers have learned as much as I have. I wish you the best in life and on the water. Thanks Steve.

"Catch another day" and I love it. The best catfish to eat is like you say the smaller ones. Here in Georgia we call the best eating ones "squealers" cause of the noise they make with their fins, about 10 inches long, maybe less. But the channel cats 8 to 10 lbs are great to filet. Keep fishing brother cause all I do is talk about it.

When fish like catfish and bass become monstrously big, they have alot more collected toxins and debris than other fish, making them not taste like they should and potentially dangerous to eat in large amounts

I used to love fishing the Ohio river for big cats. It's been like 12 years since I've fished there. I used to live in southern Illinois a tiny town called rosiclare. Stayed with a family member who needed help and lived there about a year. There was nothing to do there except fish or watch tv so I fished about everyday. I've caught many big blues and flathead and even nice channel cats all from shore there. My biggest cats ever have been from the Ohio river. My biggest blue was 73 pounds my biggest flathead was 57 pounds and my biggest channel cat was 9 pounds from the Ohio river. Many great times wish I had a boat at that time probably could have caught larger fish.
