Mint is a good alternative. Ubuntu based, great Cinnamon desktop environment, no Snaps, and a fresh release is just around the corner (Mint 21, based on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS).

I wouldn't say 'no Snaps' but they defend users against having Snaps forced upon them. Choice is important - you should be able to install whatever you like, but not have choices removed to push a second rate in-house project.

I once did apt purge snapd and it removed all installed snap packages. I know for sure because I reinstalled snapd and did snap list and it listed no snaps. No need to go through snap remove --purge one by one. If you're worried about the leftover files that would've been deleted by issuing command snap remove --purge, they're in /var/lib/snapd/snapshots.

I would also suggest adding xtra-deb ppa and xtra-deb repo , as they return all debs removed to force snaps and adds a few good apps.

I can't remember which distro it was that I installed (but it was probably Ubuntu based) and noticed all this crap scattered in my home directory. After looking into it, it was all snap related 😡. And did notice it took longer for these snaps to load. So went through manually and changed them all over to either proper repo ones or flatpaks. This script would have been nice to have in that regard. In the end it didn't matter as I swapped to another distro without snaps as it just worked better than the one I was on.

in my opnoin if a devloper supports appimage and flatpack and maybe even a .deb for good messure they pretty much supported every desktop linux distro out there theres no need to support dnf and pacman and what else does only need to be supported if something needs to be intregated into your system like kernal modules for kvm in that situation its best to use your native package manager app images arent really a choice becuse there seprated from everything else a flatpack will probally work but if you have apt then that will most likely be your best bet if you wonna run a browser or a game client like steam flatpack is the best option

I have a now aging Dell latitude E7470 with limited RAM and space (128GB HD). Every little bit helps and matters when it comes to speed, efficiency and space. I took a sabbatical from GNU/Linux for a few years. Recently wiped windows off the laptop and installed Ubuntu and loving it again. However, the speed or lack of rather, launching some apps was noticeable. Snaps and flatpaks didn't exist when I was in Linux-land and just catching up. I wouldn't care but the impact on performance is noticeable. If it weren't for the fact I love the Ubuntu aesthetic I would just switch to a different distro but, what a hassle 'un-snapping' Ubuntu. I think it's insane they way Canonical tries to force their developmental ideas on users. Did the world really need yet another package management? Maybe, someone will create an Ubuntu iso that is Ubuntu "un-snapped" out of the box, so we don't have to worry about mistakes or it creeping back in etc.

With respect [smile] install Mint. Easy fix. For one thing, a Mint install won't try & 'repair' your install by putting it back.
As several other comments here say, quite reasonably, if you don't want snaps then why are you on Ubuntu? How many Linux variants are there based on Debian and with some added tricks? Sparky-Linux - Parrot-Linux - MX-Linux - Kali ... go to distrowatch and step down the list one by one, and some of them are Arch based (irrelevant for this conversation) and most of those which remain, are Debian based. Anything that's based on or developed from Ubuntu (Mint being an exception) should not have snapd in it by default. If it does, it will probably be mentioned on distrowatch, or in the release notes. That still leaves you at least 40 distributions.
Yes, you can remove it, but why not stat with something where either it was never in there, or it's been taken out by the distro maintainers?

  • @MG-qj2zh
    @MG-qj2zh 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hello, I ask myself the simple question why I should do this as an Ubuntu user? I as a mature Ubuntu user adjust and also adjust to use Snap.
In Ubuntu there is but the possibility of DEB over Flatpak also all other variants to use.
Here runs besides Fedora 36 also Ubuntu in the 22.4 as LTS version and sorry, I have no problems with Snap because I use enough memory, have enough disk space and even at the first start of the apps like Firefox the pause easily survive, especially since this is currently at around 2800ms and then at around 800-1000 ms.
It just works, as well and similar to Silverblue.
It is true that System Snap is proprietary on the part of Canonical like so many other things in life and yet not the devil's work because the developers do not have to go this way and yet they do it as in the example of Mozilla. I find it much more important that the packages are kept up to date as currently seen in the example of Thunderbird.
One was but as in the case of Canonical an absolute Nogo. Firefox as a snap without connection to the Gnome Extensoins. This must not happen to a company, especially since there was no other way to give inexperienced users access to the Gnome extension infrastructure.
In the end, I find Ubuntu to be a non-starter. Rather I would take Zorin for it but in no case MINT or PopOS especially since both derivatives participate from Canonical and simply neuter parts and even complain about it. This gets no support from our side especially since the added value especially in PoP OS are 90% used extensions that have been adapted to make the look of PoP OS. I personally see even Fedora as the current easiest distribution especially for beginners with standard laptops of the newer generation.

I definitely don't mind running snaps on a server. There's really not a better option for command line utilities. Here's what I mean: docker is a great, but you can't use it to run commands/apps on the server's bare metal. AppImages could be a potential solution, but honestly I'm unaware of any major CLI apps that use it, and then you've got the whole issue of updating said apps. Flatpaks are designed for desktop use, so no CLI apps there, either. So you're left with Snaps or whatever is in the distro's repos.
Now on desktop, snaps are... Fine. Innocuous at best. Honestly, I don't care enough about Canonical knowing that I downloaded something from them to care that much. But flatpaks, honestly, feel better once you use them. They just make more sense. There's more software that I WANT to run in flatpaks. Heck, I end up using it more often than regular RPMs for Fedora, just because I know that if it works on one system, it will work on my system. Snaps just don't have a reason to exist on Fedora, not unless the software only exists as a snap.
Snaps, I think, will be around for a long time. Canonical has too much market share for it to not be a standard. I don't think it will be THE standard, but it very well could be for the server space.

I love snaps on my Ubuntu for instance the Firefox snap on Ubuntu 16.04 ESM loads faster that the Firefox flatpak on Fedora 36. The hate against snaps reminds me of the hate against Unity 10 years ago, equally stupid and unjustified. Just another populist hate expedition of the low-IQ Linux users against Canonical.

I don't know about firefox snap vs firefox flatpak and I am unbiased but gotta say the few apps that I installed so far are slow to launch. Benchmark comparisons have been made and snaps are just slower its a fact. I have an old laptop with only 128gb hd. Speed and space is a real issue and I don't see why Ubuntu is again forcing things on users. I do recall the Unity thing... I was never against it and on any hate expedition then either, but since you mention it. look how that was eventually abandoned; other projects too, like the smartphone. The way Canonical tried to creep amazon in was also wrong. I still love the Ubuntu aesthetic otherwise I'd use a different os but the corporate aspect of Canonical forcing weird new stuff is a shame. I took a sabatical from gnu/linux for a number of years and just recently come back...the thing that irked me then still irks me now more than ever that this snap issue, which didn't exist when I was using GNU/Linux last, which is the issue of fragmentation and duplication of efforts on stuff that doesn't matter which could be used to focus on making the things we have already better and creating new better "killer apps" Instead we now have flatpaks and snaps...woohoo...

I am a “NEWBIE”. Is (SNAP). MICROSOFT’S ADDITION TO LINUX? IF NOT, WHAT DID MS add to Linux?
I want to pull everything Microsoft from my Linux regardless of flavor. Windows v11. Really shows MS BROAD SWEEP TO FORCE CONTROL OVER USERS. I DESPISE MS Windows!
If there is a (written short code) I can install or commands listed I can use on all Linux I would be most humbled!

You can compile Linux kernel without Microsoft things... But it will a very hard work deleting Microsoft lines of code....
I would recommend you to install *BSD or Mac, but I think that even in them you could find things from Microsoft
      🤣🤣 Just chill
