I grew up in the neighbor town of Harvey, Riverdale, and went to High School in Harvey. Part of the reason Harvey has gotten in that state is because of the previous Mayor who was voted out a few years back. Used the city’s money as a piggy bank. Smh
I grew up in Harvey 50 years ago, into my teens. I can't tell you how much it's saddens me to see that little city. It was really, really nice at one time.
When you got to Halsted on the left side you passed a car wash. That thing is like an Icon I grew up on 145th and Green. You went by Gus Laundry on the left. Then you passed a gas station back in the day it was a Kean. Born and raised they're left in 78. Nice video.
My dad was born in Harvey in the 50’s but only lived there for about 4 years we’ve gone back a couple times it just gets worse and worse each time we go
Great tour of Harvey . I grew up in Markham and Homewood and eventually left in 1978. Back then Harvey was still thriving. Lots of factory jobs and the middle class was thriving. That was sad seeing all those abandon buildings. Thanks for sharing with us. Another tour that would be fun if you get down that way is Ford Hts. It is a lot like Harvey.
@@brian636 There use to be lots of great summer time (high paying jobs) down there. Use to work two shifts and bank lots of money to get through college. Every once in a while some one posts a tour of the area and it looks just like Harvey. All the manufacturing is gone now. The people left down there don't seem to have a lot of hope. Apartments, business, and old project housing are closed and boarded up. I dont even think they have a police department left. I think one of the neighboring towns gives them limited police support. Anyways, keep up the great tours. Us expats that moved away enjoy them !
The town I live in was once called little Chicago, seeing how crime is one of the worst rates in the state, you inspired me to start my own little history lesson videos of some areas
hey i noticed you mentioned Gary, ever think about visiting sometime? Town has some crazy history and abandonded buildings as well as some great food places. One of my favorites is on the south side King Gyro, has some of the best gyros ive had.
So effed up. My family owned a cabinet shop on wood street by the eddison. I played on those streets and rode my bike around on those very streets. So sad. God bless anyone who still is trying to make it their home.
I've walked down all areas of the Westside and never had issues. I walked into Harvey once and turned around lol. I was an addict so I was out west a lot but I wasn't messed with for that reason, plus I wasn't affiliated or starting any problems. Thankfully I no longer need to visit those areas unless it's just driving through for work.
I remember going there as a kid in the late 80's, early 90s when my dad worked at Cresco Lines. Always felt sketchy cuz we would be there in the middle of the night of course. Same feeling I get when I'm in Gary, Hammond, Cal City, Ford Heights, Chicago Heights, etc, late at night.
Just discovered you, that was a great rundown..I also love the story-telling while biking. This is unique stuff, thanks for sharing our home state and its woes. Keep up the good work! Your channel is a hell lot more lively and successful than mine lol
I learn so much about places from hood eats, sadly none of this is even needed in school so it’s taking up that part of memory. Thank you Brian for making school more difficult
would be really cool to see you do one of these in Flint Mi, basically its on its way to a demise similar to Harvey it seems. lots of history in the downtown area and a unique culture fs. Love these videos and the style of video you create.
Maybe in Chicago it’s the most dangerous and full of abandoned buildings, but do a hood eats on the East Side of St. Louis like East St Louis, Washington Park, Brooklyn, and Centerville all in the state of Illinois.
Hey man I recommend bulldogs off of I23 they are decently priced but great tasting food use to work there it in Streator IL plus there is history on the town
Bro im From Harvey, live in las vegas now, its crazy that you was only out there for only a few sec, and you was able to get that vibe we grow up with. That dead golomy vibe. GREAT FOOD but be safe bro, love your show.
You know I can actually say I've seen all different suburbs of America thanks to you Brian really im in Adelaide south Australia 🇦🇺 my first Cousin moved there for his job and never left he has his own family now too been living in the States more then 40 years now, my Dad's brother's oldest son Steven ielasi. Good video, good info, good vibe! Thanks!! BTW, I really did drive my Ninja 650 from Los Angles to Chicago 2,000 miles end of July to hook up with Leaned Back. Looked for you but never saw you. Put 4500 miles on my bike and it was all good. Maybe connect next year or if you're out in Orange County or LA sometime this winter!
i really like these videos because he shows how these once great places got destroyed once the original inhabitants who made it great got replaced with basketball and teens
It's sad to see that Harvey, as well as Robbins, Riverdale, and Ford Heights is falling apart to an abysmal state of disrepair, becoming the shell of its former selves; I should know considering I stay in Harvey....☹️
It is sad ,coz I've been homeless and would give my right arm to own a house, If I didn't work and private rent accomodation I would be homeless again. They need to let people build and invest in Construction of new affordable accommodation. I see the same in England ,huge housing estates abandoned, and I think Governments or Councils should just turn them over to the Public if they don't want to invest in them. Form a Housing Group and pressure the Council/State to give you a couple of plots!
11:00 so surreal seeing you eat at Alpha Gyros. my mom used to work there for YEARS back in the 00's and was really good friends with the previous owner and his son that took ownership. my uncle used to actually live across the street from the restaurant.
To answer the question about the roofs, when the roofs are in that much disrepair a leak starts and after enough time it just rots out and that's how you get roofs like that.
bru i learned more in your hood eat videos than in history class, i may not live in illinois but i think i know more about the history of it than my home town
Chicago food. Some of the best💯🙌🏽 It’s sad to see more and more of Chicago becomes abandoned as time goes on. There’s a town not to far from where I’m at called Danville, IL. Here in 20-30 years the whole town will probably be abandoned just due some of the things you’ve named off and also just due to jobs leaving the area and people not having work and then moving to find jobs.
