I was a crew chief on Specter (AC-130) an unfortunate crew mishap required me to fly from Texas to California ASAP, there were no MAC flights going out until the following day, but there was an F-4 Phantom going out and the back seat was available. GOT G-suit, a helmet and was rolling within the hour. Ops informed me this was a low level terrain following mission. No idea really so I said cool. At the take off end of the runway, the pilot communicated hold on. We then started rolling at full military power to 15K, it felt like an elephant was sitting on me. After receiving the OK from ground, the aircraft nosed over and went from 15K to 1K in about 20 secs. Think of the steepest roller coaster drop you ever did and multiply by a thousand. Weightlessness was pretty cool. Once we got to assigned alt. We flew really fast and really low for a little under two hours. It was a way cool experience I will never forget.

Fun fact: those speeds are actually different. Mach 1 at 60k feet is LITERALLY slower than at 10k feet. It doesn’t just ‘seem slower’, you literally going less MPH at 60k feet.

So in air, the higher you go the lower the air temperature (if you look up the equation for speed of sound in a GAS it isn’t reliant on density) which reduces the speed of sound which makes MACH 1 a lower speed. It might happen accidentally if the pilot is lost and not in approved airspace. I flew low level at 1.2 Mach (900 mph) over the Nevada desert in restricted airspace during an air combat training exercise.

Crazy part is, that is pretty much the flight path of United 175. Approached from the Statue of liberty, aggresively decending 8000ft in a minute, exactly same path as the one in the video
