Building a Homestead from Scratch | How I know It’ll Work

  • Everyone thought they were crazy, but the Hollars had to quit their job and “normal” life in California in order to save their family. After an epic search through 46 states they settle in western North Carolina. NOW, other TH-cam homesteaders throw a Demolition party, and get Stuff done.

Small farmers in ireland have being organising mehil groups for hundreds of years. Basically 1 day a month all your neighbouring farmers come to your land and help you do what projects you want and you then all go to their land another day and pay them back with your time on their projects and so on. Great idea for building small farms and communities.

    This is a beautiful video.
Meg and Ben remind me of that rare couple on an HGTV show who can actually see the potential in the bones of a home instead of picking apart every little detail. Glass half full, every time.

This video is very inspiring. My family and I recently bought a 40 acre property and moved to it from out of state. I've been watching your channel and others like it for years (since I was living over in China), and they were a big inspiration to do what we're doing. We bought our place from a deceased gentleman's estate, and he hadn't maintained anything for many many years. If the Hollar's property is an 11/10, ours might be a 12/10 with the amount of repairs and cleanup we have in front of us. It can be overwhelming. We're city people with zero experience farming, and we don't know anyone here so we have no community. Also, since we're just starting we have few tools, no tractor, no UTV, etc.
That being said, we've been here just over a month and we already have three craigslist bantam chickens, six craigslist quail, 12 ducklings, 5 chicks, 13 guinea keets, and a turkey poult. We've already had some learning experiences (a few losses due to nooby mistakes) with the birds, but now things seem to be stable and we're starting to get fresh eggs. Before moving here I was wanting to start a second TH-cam channel to document our progress, but now I'm not sure. I already have so much work with the property and animals that I don't know if it makes sense to spend all the extra time filming and editing. I have been working on my first TH-cam channel for years, and I barely have over 1000 subs and it has never made money. Advice?

Loved your video gave me chills!! We moved to my husbands homestead it has been neglected, but hoping to turn it around. Planted a few fruit trees, berry bushes, gardening and last summer we got 21 laying chickens. Your video inspired me to really get to work even though we are older in our late 50s. Just want to say a big Thank You!

Love your perspective on The Hollar’s Homestead (present and future) and it is so good to be back watching your channel among others. Especially, to start with this video playlist between channels. It does my heart good after dealing with the loss of my Father and my Mother’s 3rd stroke. This was the type of community my Father grew up around (but near Yorktown Heights, NY), and the type of community so many of us desire to return to, and you are so right, we all need to start our vision by planting those seeds no matter where God has us now. :) I love all the visions, and pray it turns out even more beautiful and productive than they or anyone else can imagine.

The Holler's have not only an amazing work ethic but also an amazing attitude towards the work ahead. So, glad that you guys were able to take a day to help them! I'm going to be showing my roommate the porta-pig deep bedding system later today. Out of all of the people in my family, I am truly the last person expected to become a backyard farmer or homesteader. That's nearly a direct quote from my Mom so not an exaggeration lol. We don't have a lot of space to work with, less than a full acre, but I am building some raised beds and I have started our first laying flock of chickens, ducks and geese. They are all still young but I am really enjoying having them and I continue to watch your and several other homesteaders channels to learn more.

Justin, I think the majority of us that watch your videos as a way to imagine... what it would be like... most of us will never have the opportunity to do what you do... but we can dream and live our dreams through your families journey. Your children are awesome. What I think every parent dreams of having. As parents we look at your example and are humbled. As we get older, it is obvious that we will never live this dream ourselves, but we thank you for giving us a glimpse of what it could have been like. Keep it up.

Great presentation. And what a great bunch of people and who knows how many more would have been there if they could have been. Like a old fashion barn raising except with demo. What a story, they were lost and now they found themselves. Going to be fun watching their vision progress. I have been following them for a while and I just love watching them and listening to their dreams of what they can do. And each time you hear them talk, their vision get refined and more detailed as more of the mess is cleared away and they see what they have. Inspires me to work harder on my own place.
