  • How To Make A Clock In The Home Machine Shop - Part 4, by Clickspring.
    In this video I go through the setup for cutting clock wheels, and cut the teeth for the 3rd wheel of the John Wilding "Large Wheel Skeleton Clock" project..
    This is basically a light milling operation, carried out on the lathe, using a cross-slide mounted vertical slide, a light duty milling spindle, and a Sherline motor/speed control.
    I also introduce the latest acquisition for the shop - a Divisionmaster cnc indexer.
    Be sure to use breathing protection whenever you are heating super glue.

    00:24 As to why clockmakers call gears "wheels", I haven't really found a good answer, but if it has 20 or more teeth its called a wheel, and if it has less than 20, its called a pinion.
    01:12 The face of the chuck can be trued up if needed, little glue is applied, and then the rough blank is held in place with the tailstock for a few minutes while it sets. Its sort of a modern version of the shellac wax chuck that watchmakers have traditionally used. I turned the blank to the correct outside diameter, and then drilled and bored the center hole.
    02:16 I made an adaptor plate for a myford vertical slide to fit the cross-slide, and also a platform that'll hold the motor and speed control. A spindle is mounted on the vertical slide, and then indicated to be square.
    02:40 The cutter is mounted on an arbor, and locked into the spindle, and then its lined up on the center of the work. In this case I'm using a centering button to identify the wheel center. The belt is tensioned to be tight at the full depth of cut, and thats the cutting setup all ready to go.
    03:11 For dividing, I have these classic dividing plates, but the 290 tooth "Great Wheel" is a problem.
    03:28 I had to make a few bits and pieces to make it work for my setup, like this expanding mandrel for the rear of the lathe, as well as support brackets. But this stuff only needs to be made once, and then its good to go for the future. So this is how the dividing mechanism fits onto my lathe.
    04:15 The first step is to establish the correct depth of cut, and to do this, I took repeated cuts on either side of a single tooth, slightly lowering the cutter after each pass.
    04:59 At that point, the cutter is at the correct depth to form the teeth, the vertical slide is locked, and then all of the teeth are cut in one pass. After all of the setup, the actual cutting of the teeth is pretty straight forward. The wheel can be taken off with a bit of heat.
    06:21 Here's the arbor for the stop work wheels. These teeth are a little long, so I made this one thicker, and just machined it away along with the brass to keep the teeth well supported during the cutting; same goes for the escape wheel.
    06:33 The center wheel arbor is fabricated from 2 parts, as is the arbor for the great wheel. Apart from size, its essentially same thing in each case. Some wheels require different profile cutters. The escape wheel for instance, and the ratchet.
    07:03 large tooth pitch, so it required a custom cutter. I used this button tool to form the tooth profile, It also needed its own custom arbor to mount it into the spindle.

      +EddvT There was no backlash too. If I were to do it I would have made the first two cuts and the last cut then worked backwards.

      John Ridley, If you look closely to the video, you can actually see the devise adjusting for backlash (4:03, when turning backwards, it's going too far and then coming back to adjust for backlash and to have an accurate measurement going in the clockwise direction)

    hello chris john craig here , am going to get straight to the point here, i have been looking for years and spoke to loads of people about how to make a model train go from "A" to "B" 12 inches roughly in 12 hours. And that being the hour hand and the same for the minute hand .
    This project is to do with a fine art invention .
    I do not know if you are electronically minded but what i have watched you do maybe could help me.
    Your work to me is pure engineering expertise a work of art a work that is only i,d say there must be a limited amount of people who could do that. Fascinating

    Very nice work! Congratulations from Switzerland. Even in Switzerland, there are very few people beging able to do this kind of work nowadays. Real watchmakers. My father was one of Thema and calculated and made an entire pocketwatch by himself. And today, I only know one person who can do this. Englishmen are better watchmakers than swiss natives. The late George Harris, constructor of the reborn Omega in-house mouvements, is the most famous of them. Long live Britain!

    Oh boy, I will always be behind the eight ball with this type of set up! The cost alone means I have to get some dividing plates and do it the old fashioned way. I was excited because my new (old used) lathe arrives today. I need to learn to use the old stuff because it is more affordable than new everything you need to set up a shop. Thanks for sharing.       And you have to check the maths necessary to multiply torque, velocity or divide a minute in 480 pulses. Its easy but you must calculate it.I already made gears by hand and calcultaed everything with a pencil, everything by hand without any error.

      In German a gear is called a "Zahnrad", literally "tooth wheel". Maybe that is the source for clockmakers calling gears wheels...

    WOW My late dad was a toolmaker and I am very impressed. We once made barrels like that with no spinning cutter. Broached them I guess you would say then ran one into another with valve lapping compound to make up for the quality of cut. Briavo Sir Wonderful work.

    05:50 I guess cutting the very last tooth is very exciting. Does it all come together? If the mechanism is only a tiny bit off, say 0.01 mm times 290, you will end up with half a tooth. So the accuracy with it cuts that last tooth is pretty impressive. By the way, I saw the motor compensate for the slack when returning to the first tooth in the trial cut, nice!

    I made Wilding's wooden clock. It was a nightmare because wood is not either level or straight. Now making the Isaacs clock out of plastic, because brass is unobtainium where I live (Alaska). I have a small lathe (Taig/Peatol) and a Proxxon mill. Had to build a dividing head before I could cut gears. But it is not the result, it is the journey. I also have built my own cutters. I would be very interested in more detail on your button profiler for custom cutters. Thesr videos are magnificent; please keep them coming.

    It's funny, being a designer and a machinist, I gaze over the shoulder of different people who do both and wonder why our styles differ. I am a watchmaker as a hobby, and appreciate the time and effort that goes into these projects. As for the cutouts, my mind went to a rotation table, 6", with a sacrificial aluminum plate. I would have cut the inner holes with a boring head. I would have milled the the concentric arcs near the outside with a milling bit. The same bit would have done the struts in the same operation. You would have to sneak up on them, as aggressive milling would have side loaded the brass and chattered. The glue would help this out. I don't file that much, relying on a good milling bit or sharpened tool bit to get the finish. I do use steel wool in the edges to soften then and polish brass, plastics, aluminum, or even titanium.     I personally would have loved to see a couple of the teeth from differently shaped ones to get a general idea of what was happening to form those shapes.

    Look at a "Herbert Arnold Zenit burner", it's a Glassworks glassworking torch made in Germany that is quintessence of torches and is a stunning piece of craftsmanship.
    I believe you could make something similar
