I work at a park where we teach children about pioneer life. They get to use a quill pen or a pen that is used for calligraphy. This pen wiper will be perfect to add to our cabins! Thank you so much!
I could see red and yellow pen wipers on the desks. That would be so cute. If there's an apple pattern, that would be even better! Of course, modern kids don't know about the tradition of giving an apple to the teacher. It got lost somewhere around the late 1950's or early 1960's, I think.
My partner uses old style fountain pens a lot to draw with and constantly uses either his jeans or pieces of tissue to wipe his nib, so, it's his birthday coming up in May and i think im definitely going to make him one of these! What a perfect little gift for somebody who appreciates calligraphy ink drawing!
What a great little pattern. Isn’t it amazing that even the most simplest thing of everyday life they made to be something beautiful? We need to do that in our lives more today.
To fun!!!!! I'm an artist,I paint a lot of water color and we use a lot of paper towels to WIPE our brushes on. I will definitely be making a couple of those BRUSH wipers for my painting kits! Thank you for sharing! It really is fun waiting for the surprise at the end!!!
I truly love your videos♥ I have crochet since I was 8 , am 78 now, my Grandma taught me. I learned to crochet by watching her. Never learned to read patterns. I am a Copy Cat...if I see it I can do it so that is why You Tube is my go to place. Love the vintage items. Would love some Vintage Baby Bibs if you ever run across them. Look forward to your videos. ♥
Very cute! Never heard of pen-wipers! Life was harder then than it is now. I love that rather than just using a piece of rag to wipe off excess ink, people were trying to make an everyday utilitarian items as pretty as possible. Thank you for another high quality tutorial in your fun game! Without details, your dedication to Genevieve (?) was touching.
@@justvintagecrochet I remember my grandmother crocheted a bottle cozy to keep my baby sister's bottle warm (1960...glass bottles). About 15 years later, somebody invented those thick foam holders to put your can of soda in to keep it cool. Hmmm! 🤔
I just love how you solve the pattern instructions whilst talking everything out for us. Stunning and very clever. I’m so impressed and thrilled with the information about the pen writer. Wow. So interesting
I Love your Videos I Love the mystery and the excitement waiting to find out what it is just so much fun hope you have several more it really is fascinating 😊
That is a cool pattern. I'm glad that it explained the calico on the back, I couldn't imagine rubbing ink on the top. As you worked on the pink center part, I saw the pattern for a great scrubby!
Never heard of a pen wiper! This is so fun and you're so brave to try these patterns with their often-odd terminology, and without knowing what the patterns are. I imagine ink and paper weren't cheap, especially for us "lowly women-folk," so they had to assume the ladies knew certain things about crochet without writing out all the instructions out.
I'm a calligrapher and I didn't know there was such a thing! Thanks very much for sharing this! I made one for myself. I haven't added the cloth, but I don't think there is really any sewing involved. I think you just sandwich five or so layers of black cloth between the crocheted top and bottom disks and I'm just going to tie it together so that the cloths can be replaced when needed.
I'm amazed that anyone could have made sense of those instructions. The end result was beautiful. The rosette would be pretty on a baby bonnet. I love these videos.
Very nice and I guess very useful for the times. I can just imagine a mother teaching her daughter how to make one and her having her mom's little beauty on her desk at school.
These mystery crocethings are awesome! I also do these on my own and have noticed that ob old patterns tjey expect you to crochet only on back loops. So here you'd have the front loops to do the rosette part. But either way this turned out beautifully❤
I was thinking it might be a pretty doily to set under a glass votive candle holder after the first round of pink. This pattern looks like it could be easily used for a lot of different things.
That's interesting, think it would work as a pot scrubby with a little size adjustment, and change of materials. Or change materials and size for a pot holder.
It is so remarkable to see something from the Victorian era brought back to life. I couldn't help it, I Googled pen wipers. I knew that they used some kind of powder and/or a blotter to dry the ink on the pages they wrote, but I never knew about the pen wipe. Thank you for sharing this beautiful piece of Victorian history with us.
I followed along using acrylic and nylon/wool blend (some vintage yarn I got at the thrift store), and the resulting piece is going to become a brooch. I fully intend to make one with the "appropriate" colors sometime, as I use a couple of dip pens for art and this will come in handy!
Cute... could make them just as rosette to decorate basket, bag, book cover case etc. what a neat way to spruce up a school desk back in the day. Personalize their writing equipment.
I can't crochet, well I can but badly. It seems the harder I try the worse I get. Your videos mesmerise me, your work, they way you talk, and the discussion you have with yourself everything is just so relaxing. You make it look so easy that I start to believe I can do it but I can't. Fabulous work, I love all your mystery work but to me it's akin to translating hieroglyphics. I wouldn't know where to start so I'll keep watching you and crochet vicariously.
I've looked at many, many old needlework patterns in lady's magazines (and tried a few) and am so impressed at how pretty they are in reality. Pen wipers were a popular item for mothers, sisters and sweethearts to make for gifts and sell at bazaars.
I don't know why I hadn't seen this one yet but I'm kinda happy about it because I was surprised with an extra video to hold me off till the next one. YEAH.
Thank you for sharing. I like watching because it reminds me of my favorite grandmother working on her crochet. I finally figured it out after so many years.
I guess that is what commercially sold blotters were for. I'm nearly 70 and I remember seeing blotters on office desks back in the 70's and even into the early 80's.
That's amazing. I thought it was going to be a flower when you got to the pink part. I too learned something historical about the pen wiper. Now these days we write with a stylus on phones and tablets that don't require ink. I would guess this could still be a useful item for anyone who may write artisticalky with fountain and calligraphy pens.
Oh, how lovely... and practical! When I'm able to crochet again, I'd like to make one for myself. I'm sure I'm not the only one who's used a pen and while writing, ink or lint accumulates on the tip of the pen: obviously, I very much need my own pen-wiper! Thank you for another wonderful video, Corinna. Well done!! xx
You made a pen wiper about a year ago! You done a great job on the first one and on this one too! Sorry I’m so late on watching this one. I love all of your videos.
Yes, I am excited. 2 minutes in... discribtion: hu, did understand nothing, lets see what comes out...nice, your guess is right...why not make something useful pretty. Nice! Thank you so much. This is fun. Love it
I am so happy to have subscribed. I'm recent and I get such a kick out of your presentation. I'm getting crochet lessons from a talented artist with a real person attitude. I need to make these pretty things! Thank you again
I think the black glazed calico is polished cotton which has a polished or glazed finish like chintz. This was used quite a lot for lining clothing, so there would be a good amount of it in many homes. Good job deciphering the pattern, and it's very pretty.
Have just stumbled across your channel a few hours ago and have been thoroughly enjoying watching you as I sit here knowing full well what I'm crocheting 😂.. I will be watching for as long as I can tonight, and pick it back up next time I'm crocheting and looking for something to watch 😊

Absolutely adorable. Love this piece of history.

So true!
Ah. The black yarn is now making sense since the ink of refillable old-fashioned ink pens (quills too) was black. Pretty.
That beautiful pen wiper can be easily turned into a pin cushion or needle holder.❤

Mystery crochet patterns is my favourite series, I was so pleased to see another pop up. Thanks to you and your son.
Best one yet. Looks perfect for a prize ribbon rosette.
Love it, I think the center in brown and the outer in yellow can form a sunflower pattern that would be pretty too. ❤❤👏👏👏

Very nice and I guess very useful for the times. I can just imagine a mother teaching her daughter how to make one and her having her mom's little beauty on her desk at school.
Oh, so that's why it called for black. Such a cool little piece. Lots of calligraphers would love a pen-wiper.

That chrysanthemum pen-wiper would make a very nice coaster or mug rug! Nice and padded to protect your table.

Hello 👋.I love it. Thanks for sharing this with us.and I leaned something new.
It looks like it was make the cutest version of a dish scrubby. :)
It looks like a flower 🌸
Love it, and the history lesson too. Thank you 🙂
You learn something new every day. I never thought about needing something to wipe the ink off of your quill. Nice pattern to try.
What a cute idea! Would make a cute appliqué on something. Such a pretty idea but looks more like a peony than a rose to me.
Great idea!!
What a wonderful idea and pattern!
Great accent piece on an antique desk next to the inkwell!

Love, love, love these mystery crochet patterns! ❤

2 of those in cotton connected front to back would make a great kitchen sponge.
Wow, I had never heard of one of those! I wonder if my grandmother had one when she was a child in grade school.
Crazy kids these days. Don’t even know what your garden variety, everyday pen wiper is!
Great video! Very entertaining!

Made on a much larger scale, with many additional rounds, this would make a lovely bath mat.
So pretty! I never knew tthere was such a thing as a pen wiper.
Love this one - very fun. I am fond of fountain pens but always had to keep paper towels around for wiping - this would be so much better!
Really enjoyed another Vintage Crochet Mystery! Thanks!
Awesome! Thank you!
WOW... I love it. I have never heard of a pen wiper. Now I know. Such a pretty thing though, that I would think, get ruined by ink.
That was fun! I was intrigued by the way that first the spiral of petals and then the rows of leaves were worked from the outside toward the center.
So cute and useful back in the day and now for artist !!! Thanks
Cool! Learned about pen wipers. Had never heard of one
