What’s It Like Having 3 Cats in a Studio Apartment?

  • 3 cats in a small studio apartment. Sounds pretty intense. Sometimes I wonder how it got to this point, but here I am: I am a man with 3 cats. One Bengal named Latte, a Russian Blue named Ash, and a Scottish-Straight named Rosie.
    This video is for anybody that's thinking of adding an extra cat or two but is nervous if their accommodations can handle it.

      I have a 2 bedroom with 3 cats and cat poles in corners and shelves for cat highways is a great idea so they can walk around up high having their own territory. I always make some play time together. I use long plastic clear bins to keep in the hallways away from living area
      Also a robot vacuum. Clay litter, walnut and wheat litter are their favorites. One prefers high sides.
      Lots of little hang out spots. Cozy spot to hang near a window. My 3 cats are super happy and close. Although, one eats kibble only, one kibble and wet food and one only wet food or he vomits.

      I will add a wheel! I recommend cat highways and creating leisure places for them over fridge for instance or on high shelves that lets them walk along walls. It sometimes keep them out of my way. Fish tank entertainment for them is nice too.
      Those wheels are $800 in Canada due to shipping.

    • @kenmken
      @kenmken 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      There is little evidence that dry food is inherently bad for cats, but certainly any good diet should have at least around 50% wet food. As long as both dry and wet foods are of good quality. People worry a lot about carbs but studies have not found much evidence that carbs from starches in the amount present in dry food is a risk factor, and there's some evidence high fat diets actually decrease the insulin response in cats. It's probably best to feed your cats a variety of high quality foods that you find they tolerate well and enjoy through testing

    I bought a relatively decent sized apartment last year. At first it started out with me and my first cat, then I adopted another younger cat 3-4 months and last night I had a new visitor, an orange and white male cat about the same age as my second cat, so now I have three cats in this space. 😅
    Appreciate them a lot though. They're awesome and I wasn't really a cat guy before my first cat. I also work from home in my own home recording studio so I'm around my cats most of the time. They're indoors completely.
    Buying a new litter box tomorrow, will also be buying more cat trees and toys. It's definitely doable but three is the limit for me in an apartment.

    COUPLE THINGS I SUGGEST:
    Thanks for a great video. I thought I would share a couple things I found saved me LOADS of time.
    For automated litterboxes, the best is Arm & Hammer Platinum SLIDE Easy Clean, Clumping Litter, Multi-Cat. It doesn't stick to the inside of self-cleaning litterboxes so you don't get caked on clay on the bottom or sides. With this litter it stays off the machine and dumps into the drawer leaving a clean litterbox. So you rarely have to remove the inside ball and clean it very often. Huge time saver and it doesn't track as much.
    LITTER ROBOT 4- BE SURE TO GET A FENCE (prevents cats from kicking litter out)
    LR4 for those living in the US is the best-automated litter robot, get the 3-year warranty as they just send out a new base if there are any problems. I know it is a fortune and is pretty big but when you think of it in terms of how much time you will save (especially with the litter listed above it pays for itself really quickly.). With the Slide Litter you rarely have to clean the ball. I always think about how much anything saves me in time so while it is a big investment it saves me hours a week messing with the litterbox. Litter Robot 4 is pretty much the only solid choice if you live in the US. Outside the US where service costs extra shipping it may be a toss-up with some of the knock off ones. But inside the US it's the best and only automated litter robot with real support.
    AVOID LITTER ROBOT 3
    Avoid the Litter Robot 3 as most of these have a known problem with the sensors and they are constant trouble but the V4 is worth every penny. Combined with the Arm & Hammer Platinum SLIDE Easy Clean, Clumping Litter you will rarely have to clean the ball. I just wipe it while it cycles and then I don't have to clean it very often. Arm & Hammer Platinum SLIDE Easy Clean, Clumping Litter, Multi-Cat is incredible b/c it slides off the bottom of the automated litter robot. Far less cleaning. I was shocked just how good it worked. You don't get the caked-up clay on the bottom or sides anymore which means you don't have to take it apart and clean the inside litter ball. Huge time savings and it doesn't track that bad.

      @@monsieurtn ah, at my current apartment I'm allowed to drill holes so I haven't had that issue here.
      At my last place I built off of some solid wood beams with thin bases that stayed against the sides of the room, and built up high that way so that it would be sturdy but wouldn't use much floor space. It worked well but was hard to take apart when I had to leave

      That wheel is from a company here in Korea! Unfortunately I couldn't find anything similar from western markets :( other than the ones that are usually advertised.
      That's a good question! There are times when I'm working on something that have a lot of physical parts to assemble so they gang up on me and try to play with whatever is lying on the floor - this drives me a bit crazy hahaha. But otherwise no, usually they'll be on the 'cat wall' or hanging around just watching whatever is around them (until next play time of course).

      I don't have 3 food bowls because they all eat in one bowl and whenever it's empty Kiki comes up to me and makes me follow her to go fill it up and tomorrow I'm getting 2 more litter boxes and some cat toys and maybe a cat tunnel!

    Hello Nonsieur, I find this video very helpful. Thank you very much. I have two cats in a studio too. I have one question: how do they separate their territory from each other? I just move to this studio from a big house. My old cat seems frustrated about my bed taken by the young one since I do not have another room for young cat to sleep so he takes over my bed from the old cat. And after this the old cat seems less interested in playing with me.

    Hi! I love this video, as someone who lives in a small apartment and just adopted a rescued cat, it's very helpful. How do you deal with litter box smells? I scoop twice a day but it's my biggest struggle so far. Also, the litter box is placed in my living room but I'm not so sure about leaving it there much longer.

    • @monsieurtn
      @monsieurtn  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      What kind of litter do you have? I have a full arsenal of tools that I use for litter smells but the quick and summary is using a combination of Air Purifier with carbon filters, more ventilation, and Baking Soda/Coffee Grounds.
      I have a full article about it here: monsieurtn.com/how-to-control-cat-odor-in-a-studio-apartment/

      @@monsieurtn I'm using clay litter. The smell isn't super strong and it gets better when I open the windows, but you can notice a cat lives here. I'm going to read your article and try to implement some things to make it better, and maybe I should get used to the fact that litter smells, haha.

    Love your apartment! I am considering adopting a cat. Since your studio is so compact, I'm assuming you're not able to prevent them from getting near the door/area where outdoor shoes are stored? I'd like to keep that separate from them to keep things clean but I wonder if that's even possible lol. Thanks for sharing your experience!

    • @monsieurtn
      @monsieurtn  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for your comment! Yeah unfortunately I can't prevent them from going there - even if I was able to put a gate there, most of them would probably try to jump over! Hahaha

    I enjoy your videos very much,,thankyou i i have three cats too ,yet not in a small apartment, i'm getting alot of ideas from your Channel,there are things as a cat mom i can do better. I'd like to say something about litter box that's important,i heard Jackson Galaxy say that robotic cat litter boxes,though very convinient,they are not very good idea for letting us know if a cat has some health issues,cause....how? It all gets mixed Up ,you don't actually see what cat actually does what or how,so....... If there is blood or a loose stool,how are you gonna know? It's importent to get a handle of those situatoons as soon as posible and take to vet. Apart from that,i love how you treet vyour cats and give a thought in to things 🌻✨

    • @monsieurtn
      @monsieurtn  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi! In your situation, it's definitely hard to keep cats inside the room at all times but remember to give your cats enough vertical space will help them be satisfied to be in one room!
      I wrote a full article about this here! monsieurtn.com/keep-cats-in-one-room/
      Some tools I recommend that might deter them from leaving the room would be cat/pet gates!

    I prepare myself to have a cat next year when I move back to my own apartment. I would like to know if your cats meow frequently when you are away for work? I have been skeptical, because I am not sure about my ‘work-from-home’ period which might be stop anytime next year, and I’ll have to return to the office. I’m so afraid if it’s going to meow when I have to leave it alone; I will feel terribly sad for my cat and my neighbors who will be disturbed. 🥺

    • @monsieurtn

      From what I see in my experience with my cats, I don't think I've ever heard my cats meow when I'm away (I have a security camera to check on the cats whenever I'm away). They meow more when I'm at home to try to get attention! Hahahha

    I am considering adopting. I
    work a graveyard shift and wondering if it might be difficult for a cat to adjust sleeping during the day and awake at night? Any advise.

    • @monsieurtn
      @monsieurtn  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi! Great question! Well, actually that's actually a cat's natural cycle, to be more active during the night and sleeping all day! So I don't think you'll have any problems there. Usually, people are trying to train them to do the opposite!
      Just bring out toys at night time for them to play with and take them away during the morning time to reinforce this behavior!
      For more details on this topic, read my article here! monsieurtn.com/how-often-to-play-with-your-indoor-cat/

    • @kittenmimi5326
      @kittenmimi5326 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, it wouldn't be hard. If anything, your new schedule might be better suited to a cats natural sleeping cycle! They are mostly sleeping / lounging around during the day anyway, and more active during the night
