A Small Rescue Kitten Meets 3 Resident Cats in a Tiny Apartment

- The first couple of days with Loki the kitten meeting my other cats Latte(Bengal), Ash(Russian Blue), and Rosie(Scottish Straight). We saw a posting from a local vet in Korea needing someone to adopt a kitten from the street. After meeting him, it was difficult not to take him in! This is the first couple of days introducing Loki, the kitten!
Loki adapted very quickly to his new home, only needing about 2-3 days to be comfortable. Adult cats might take up to a week before they fully adapt to the environment. With a few preparations and skills - cat parents can drastically reduce the time they need to adjust and begin to create a long-lasting bond with feline family members. This is the first video I have seen of having multiple cats in a studio apartment. Thank you so much man!
thanks for posting this! all of the other cat videos seem so complex, and i like how simple this one was. no need to do so much for introduction
This has been what has worked for me and so I wanted to share with other people! Are you about to introduce another kitten?
If you would like more information, I wrote about it here more in-depth! monsieurtn.com/introducing-a-cat-in-a-studio-apartment/
Silver tabbys are ALWAYS so playful and big cuddle bugs
I really appreciate this video. As much as I want to do the isolation method, it's just impossible with the layout of my apartment. This gave me hope with my resident cat and rescued cat.
It’s very difficult to do in my condo as well.
How’d it go?
@@KDF54321 It went really well. Thank you so much.
Love the big TV for the cat videos.
That lil kitten is full of life
Loki watching the birds on tv is so cute!
Thanks for sharing this! We are introducing a new male cat to our three year old female cat very soon, and our apartment isn't big enough to do the "proper" isolation, and it is so frustrating feeling like I won't be able to do it the right way. I've watched and read everything I can find on cat introductions, but I find that videos like this one, showing the actual process, are really helpful for me right now. I feel like I get some "experience" without being there. Crossing our fingers!
Did you end up getting the new cat? How did it go?
@@nicolecloutier4923 We did, and unfortunately it went pretty bad. It turned out the male cat wasn't spayed, which we of course should have checked, but we decided to try regardless. He was completely obsessed with our female cat, and she did not like it. It was a chaotic weekend, and luckily the previous owner was able to find him a new home. We are expecting to move to a larger apartment in not too long, so we decided to not take any more chances before that. I think it was a big mistake to try to introduce a cat that hadn't been spayed, so I can't really say if it is the method (when done correctly) that is the problem, though. Good luck if you are planning to do a cat introduction!
Love this! So cute and fun to watch with great info!
Thank you for your advice… I was thinking of adding 2 kittens to my home and I have 10 year old ragdoll
I am crossing my fingers and toes that the reintroduction of the separated 5 month old kitten to our 5 month old kitten will not end up in a disaster.
I need ideas on how to avoid a cat going under the bed for days. What do you have showing on your T.V.? Great idea. Thank you.
Thank you so much for this.. this is beautiful.. and really helpful.. thank you so much!!!!
Hi! I also adopted a Bengal and now I am getting a second one, with around 9 Months difference, 1 year and 3 Months. Do you think would be an acceptable difference? My apartment is also tiny without possibilities to have them separately. Wish me luck 😊
Oh so what I thought was a toyger is actually a stray cat 😁 He's beautiful!
Thanks so much :)!
Hey.. I like your method alot.. because I think cats are sensible creatures.. It's half 3 in the morning and I've been up for 2 hours afraid to go to sleep because of the information I was given from the shelter I adopted my new female kitten.. after watching a few of your introducing videos I went to play with both my cats but my older baby wasn't having it..at first when I brought the female home he was surprisingly very interested in her.. but she kept hissing for him to back off.. eventually he started hissing at her as well.. but I was doing the separation thing and my mind just told me don't bother with that because he's not going to hurt her.. but I was still freaked out by what I was told so I kept her in my bedroom and he stayed outside.. well that was the biggest mistake cuz when I went to use the bathroom.. there he was.. looking all lonely and I remembered he was there before I went to sleep.. he never left the bathroom in all the 3 hours I had been asleep.. so I decided to call him out, he answered me and I took him around the house and then rubbed his head and played with him a bit and he stayed outside.. I decided to leave her with him because I really don't want him to feel uncomfortable or hurt by me creating a barrier between the two of them.. so right now they're both getting acquainted.. haven't heard any growling or anything like that since the play session..so I'm going to sleep now..lol thanks for the video again!!! I don't have a studio apartment but all my doors remain open except for at night when I'm sleeping because any light throws off my sleep, and my roommate sleeps with the light on in the living room, so they're still being monitored to some extent..I need my sleep.. goodnight
Thanks for your comment! I know your feeling exactly. The first time introducing a cat kept me awake all night! However, I realized that cats are most likely fine if the conditions are right and owners have the strategies to guide them. It seems like your introduction is going just fine. Good luck!
I'm at your mercy for your guidance I have rescue kitten I took on but I live in a studio apartment and I seem to have issues with her scratching my face while I'm asleep. I don't feel comfortable locking her in the bathroom but since I live in the studio is there any hope to get any sleep with a wild kitty?
That's quite interesting! My Bengal scratches at my shoulder whenever he wants attention. Does she do it for food or attention is my first question.
The second thing I might recommend is to completely tire her out before bedtime and give her a large meal after the play session. This might help her just be completely exhausted for the entire night.
How did you litter train the new street cat please?
How do you teach the kitty not to destroy the chair, curtains, bite you... HELP :o XD
Hi! This video might help! The article in the video also goes in-depth into what might help you! th-cam.com/video/b6VCEZvAigI/w-d-xo.html
Gosh I’m so jealous, your cats are so chill!! I’m in month 3 of trying to introduce my kitten to my 11 year old resident cat. I’m trying the Jackson Galaxy method but I’m kind of losing hope. I have bought Feliway to give my resident cat a feeling of security. They have been separated for almost 2 months now since my resident cat attacked the kitten (there was no blood but a lot of screaming under the sofa) since then I feel really hesitant to trust my resident cat again. Since that incident we did the “no sight, only smell for 3 weeks” and then move to feeding them together while opening the door slightly but I feel pretty stuck in this step. Seen your video I wonder if I should try again given that my resident cat has not tried anything shady. What do you suggest?
Really need help because this is really emotionally draining and I don’t want to give up 😮💨
Hey. How is it going now ? Just adopted a kitten have a year old old resident cat. It’s day 3 , just looks of growling and hissing from her , it kinda walks slow toward her idk how close I can let her get close to kitten yet :/
@@saikaraut1339 Just got my kitten a few days ago. The kitten will hiss at my older cat when he gets too close. My older cat has also swatted the kitten a few times but it doesn't seem to be in an aggressive way. Its pretty normal for the older cat to swat the younger ones, especially if its a boy. Boy cats generally just play more aggressive.
@Denisse Gonzalez
Hey! I am no expert, but I can try to give you a few tips. See if it can help in any way, or at least gide you to some answers. :)
Firstly, the most important thing - for the older cat - is the chance for it to remove itself from the situation. (As you saw Rosie in the video did.) It is old and probably wants little to do with the new kitten (right now). So make sure it has a place up high to perch and observe.
Follow that is, let the new cat live free in your house. Let them eat in sight of each other. And play with them equally. Also in sight of each other. Play makes them forget their surroundings, so that is a big push forward. (Play lots with the younger cat to drain energy!)
Don't force them together. Just entourage progress with treats (or pets?).
OBS. Hissing and swatting with paw are natural and normal.
Good luck!
How is it going now for you guys? ^^
hi, so i have a resident 8month and i just recently adopted another 8month tabby about 2 days ago now and so far i have been doing the traditional introduction. but since i live with my mother and 2 other siblings we dont exactly have the room in our apartment to continue to do the traditional for much longer. considering i don’t have my own room in this apartment and im borrowing my brothers to do separation.
both cats are sweethearts when alone but just seem to be very territorial off of first eye contact. i didnt like the sight of any growling or hissing whenever they come into sight of eachother so i immediately shut it down whenever it goes left but the more i watch your videos and read comments the more i learn that hissing and growling is not the biggest problem. even though i started off with the traditional method i want to drop it and just try your method of just letting them figure it out with proper guidance and rewarding.
i do have one question though how do you feel about punishment as in spraying a water bottle at them when they hiss and growl and immediately shutting down the negative staredown as soon as it happens. would you consider starting off the traditional process only to drop it? is that ideal?
How much of a time investment a kitten is? I am thinking to adopt a kitten, I dont have any other cat in my 1bhk flat.
In general, they do require a bit more attention than adult cats but it's just so that they don't get themselves into trouble or develop any bad behaviors. As long as you catify/have scheduled play times with them (more information on my blog about that!) - adopting a kitten is a joy!
@@monsieurtn Thanks for replying! :)
i have a 7 month old resident kitten and i just got a 3-4 month kitten and my resident keep hiss and growl even try to hit her is it normal
Hi! Hissing and growling is definitely normal! Check out my video on introductions if you need more help!
Hello i wanted to ask do you use a barrier to sort of create a safe place for your kitten because i live in a smaller apartment than you just bedroom and bathroom and they attack when ever they see each other so do you have any tips or advice to help my kittens feel safe in my kind of apartment
Hi! I do not, I’ve never had any barrier when introducing my kitten or any cat but I do have some sort of place where the kitten can feel safer (such as the carrier he/she came in). When you say attacking, what do you mean? Swatting and hissing OR full on fighting with fur going everywhere? Swatting, hitting and hissing is normal for any introduction and it happens for a few days (depending on the cats).
I have lived in a smaller apartment with only a bedroom and bathroom similar to yours and have introduced cats the same way. It always begins with batting/hissing at each other, and then as you play with them, have them eat together during meal times, they associate more positive associations. For me, introductions always take less than a week.
I will do a video more into detail about this in the coming days!
@@monsieurtn omg pls do a video thank you so muchh🙏🙏🙏🙏 and thank you so much for the advice.
@@monsieurtn fighting as in full fighting where one cat is yowling and fur is in one cats mouth.
First day bring 2nd kitten only 2 months .. previous one older 7 months . Hissing to baby .so I put separate so far .. try slowly
Hi, I live a small space and unable to do the traditional introduction method. It’s has been 2 weeks now and the new cat still hisses and swats at the resident cat. The resident cat is just wants to ply and goes on her back to initiate play. However the new cat just hisses and paw up to hit the resident cat. Would you be able to give me some advice on what to do next? Thanks
Hi! Can I ask the ages of the cats, gender, and if they've been eating together/near each other?
Hey dude first of all beautiful russian blue! My question, i got a Chartreux (heavy weight champion haha but very sweet) can i have a Bengal with it? I think so.. my Chartreux got alot of energy, but he is big one haha probably around 10/11kg. You think it goes well together?
Thank you!
I think as long as they're both pretty energetic and active cats, they will work well together!
Is the Chartreux your only cat right now?
@@monsieurtn Yes it is my only cat right now. Many people have not seen a Chartreux in real life. Happy to be a owner of one. It's a special one, like your russian 😊
@@monsieurtn I also work and things like that. He needs some companion
@@CikZxiLeADZz I agree! Ever since getting my Bengal, my Russian is a lot more lively and they play very often together!
I hope it goes well! 2 cats are definitely better than 1 :)!
i was scared of getting a new cat because i didn’t have space to seperate them during introduction.
I hope my cat don’t attack the kitten😖
Thanks for your comment! I wrote a easy to follow guide to introduce your cat in a one room! monsieurtn.com/illustrated-guide-new-cat-introduction-no-isolation-separation/
I felt this, I live in a studio. My cat came from a litter and was with them until she was about 2 months. She hasn’t quite been around other kitties much, it’s been about a year.. so I’m a little nervous bringing the new kitten we plan on getting into the picture as, we have very limited space when it comes to the separation. I’m thinking of making a cardboard playpen, as I don’t want to trap the kitten inside the small bathroom we have for very long if my cat doesn’t accept her as quickly
I love this vlog very informative for cat lovers, gives me idea how to keep cats in studio. I am actually allergic to cats but I want to keep at least one. how can I prevent and immune myself from cat allergies? thanks monsieur
There are cats that produce less of the protein that causes allergies! I mention them in this article: monsieurtn.com/most-popular-indoor-cat-breed-reddit-statistics/
Every cat is also different, some cats will produce less of these proteins and the best way to see is if you can spend some time with the kittens or cat that you want. See how you react during this period and make your decision!
@@monsieurtn THANK YOU
Love the video! With four cats, do you have four litter boxes or do some of them share?
Hi! My cats share 2 litter boxes!
Bonjour Monsieur! We adopted a 4 yr old neutered cat from the humane society 2weeks ago. He was a stray, shared a room with another cat at the cattery, and that's all we know about his history. He's very vocal and likes to play a lot. He seems to be a confident cat who wanted to explore our 2 bedroom apartment as soon as we got him in the spare. Now, we have a resident female senior cat (she's 14) who's always been a solo cat and has barely been around other animals before. We adopted her 3 years ago and it took us close to 3 years before she actually came out to the sweet cat she is now. She's not as cuddly but she'll sleep in bed with us at night and she'll greet us at our door when we get home from work. Now, she has been hissing and growling at the new cat in town. She's so stressed and is just not her usual self. We are currently trying the traditional way of introducing cats (separating in different rooms, scent swapping, inching the bowls close to the door where the new cat is). We've had good days were there were no hissing from my resident cat but now that they are eating with just the door between them, my resident cat has been constantly hissing during meals. There has been some occasions that accidents happened and the 2 cats met each other. The new cat never hissed or growled during those times. If anything, he did look submissive and terrified of my resident cat who was hissing and growling and not shy to tell him that she's boss. We tried feliway spray but it doesn't seem to do anything. Any tips on how to make this easier on both cats? And honestly, on us too. We're stressed and we feel bad for both of them. Merci!!!
Hi! Thanks for your comment! I understand your concern. How long has it been since you've started the process?
I would say maybe take the food strategy up a notch. I would approach this like this:
Irresistible meals & more scheduled mealtimes.
1. Instead of feeding them the regular stuff, try spoiling them both for a week (with a variety of foods, and take note of which one they have the best response to - then just stick to that one). This makes them focus on the food and not each other.
2. If you usually have 3 mealtimes a day, add one more mealtime 4. The more you do it, the closer and closer the bowls need to get to each other until the hissing stops.
As a side note, if they're hissing and growling but still eating near each other, that's a good sign. However, if they walk away, then go back a little bit until they're comfortable eating.
hi what toys do you recommend to keep a cat busy whilst i’m working? thank you :)
Hi! Thanks for your comment! I really enjoy collapsible tunnels for cats to explore and play with their existing toys!
Rather than getting new toys, having more places for them to get to (maybe more spots on the window), and survey their environment might be more beneficial!
And of course, the ultimate way to keep a cat busy is to get a companion cat!
monsieur thank you! 🐱
How long did it take for the cats to accept him? I introduced a new kitten into my apartment without the whole blocking it off in a room thing. The existing kitty hates him and is stressed.
Hi! It takes about 3-4 days for most of my introduction and those I help to introduce cats without blocking them off!
I wrote a streamlined guide on how to do it here: monsieurtn.com/illustrated-guide-new-cat-introduction-no-isolation-separation/
I like how u just put the small cat out and didn’t do the intro after a week
Yeah I have never done the whole long introduction period thing. I always let the cats figure it out on their own and just guide them in the right direction using food/snacks + play time!
Were the cats neutered/spayed already?
The kitten wasn't - but all of the resident cats were neutered and spayed! Thanks for your comment!
Recently I just adopted a 4-month kitten (Hina - female). I already have a kitten at home (Haru - male) where I've adopted him 2 weeks earlier than Hina. Haru seems to not like Hina very much and he started hissing at Hina whereas Hina just seems very much comfortable (but a bit cautious as this is a new environment). Haru would chase Hina sometimes and tries to ambush Hina whenever Hina was not looking. But then Haru still looked scared of Hina sometimes. I really have no idea what to do, as I am also living in a studio apartment. Should I just let Hina and Haru solve this by themselves and let Hina roam free? I am afraid that Haru would ambush her when we are not supervising them.
Hi! Thanks for your comment and I understand your concern. Cats in general will work it out but depending on the cat's age and personality it might take a little longer for the introduction.

Hi! Just read your comment, how were they? 🥹
what breed is Loki?
Hi! He’s just a regular domestic shorthair! Not any breed in particular!
Thanks for the reply monsieur! We have a male kitten that looks exactly like him maybe a bit more orange. We got him from a neighbour as a bengal kitten, they owned two adult bengal cats. However as he is growing we started to see he looks a bit different than a bengal so I was wondering if we really had a bengal cub. I
Also have you heard about toygers? Are they bengal and shorthair hybrid? Maybe Loki and Raja are toygers
