    Nintendo just announced the imminent release of Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages and Oracle of Seasons on the Nintendo Switch Online service! These are real classics of 2D Zelda, and are up there with the likes of A Link to the Past and Link's Awakening. But which OoX game should you play first? In this video I will answer the question, of whether OoS or OoA make a better starting point.

    For folks who don’t know, the Oracle games were the first Zelda games done by Hidemaro Fujibayashi, who directed Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom.

      @@Gabo2oo BotW's story wasn't even that good, but somehow it was better than TotK. It didn't have anything that felt downright amazing but it fleshed out the Champions, had some cool moments with Link defending Zelda from the Yiga Clan as well as the army of Guardians, as well as Zelda confronting the Calamity all on her own.
      TotK had some good stuff too- Both of the scenes that involved Ganondorf killing Sonia and upgrading himself with her stone were great, as well as the chilling opening cutscene, but then you have dumb shit like the Ancient Sages telling you nearly the exact same story 4 different times (5 if you count Mineru although she told you something different too), the obvious and unbearably long drawn out reveal of the new Zelda being a puppet of Ganondorf, and the ending undoing a lot of the meaning behind Zelda's sacrifice, not to mention getting rid of Mineru for little to no reason. If they fixed the things wrong with it it could have very well been a noticeable step up from BotW, but with all the flaws it had it just stands below it for me.

      @@carnage0685 I haven't finished TotK so I'll have to read your full comment later, but I WILL say I'm hating how inconsistent the worldbuilding is about which BotW events happened and which didn't, more than anything. (Worst part so far is Hudson and Rhondson greeting Link while the other Tarrey Town neighbors treat him like an outsider).
      Koei Tecmo couldn't commit to make a real prequel to BotW and now the Zelda team is proving they can't commit to a sequel either.

    Imo it depends on what you're good at as a player. Personally, I love the dungeon and puzzle solving aspects of Zelda (Water temple is one of my favorite dungeons), so starting off with Ages was fantastic for me. It also helps that I kinda suck at 2D zelda combat, so carrying over some of the stronger gear into Seasons was nice for me.

      @@NayruYT The only thing that counts against both games is that they have an early game wall that's not linked to the 'zelda playstyle' for the most, with the 'kindest take of Simon' I've ever seen in a video game (always 3 inputs, so no long chains to bank into your short term memory) in Seasons and the passing mini game in Ages. Though, I'd say that the passing mini game 'between dungeons 2 and 3' in Ages is much more rough than the Simon game in Seasons as it's easier to mess up and you're forced to pay 10 rupees per go (Granted, that's also been mitigated by the rewind system and load state system, but you can also save and continue on original hardware as well, but that has a longer 'get back into the game time'), whereas it's free to do the progression blocking minigame for free in Seasons

      In my mind i always think that the difficulty in dungeons should be more like ages since its a temple/dungeon etc. That was sealed for a reason so why would it be just empty rooms with no riddles trying to keep the person who got inside from getting the treasure? And the more i think about it the more sense it would make that its this messy labyrinth
      Of rooms/enemies trying to keep me from succeeding in my quest.
      Unlike games like totk that have temples holding huge powerfull stones that any and i mean any noob that knows how to climb could just reach! Just look at the fire temple for example in totk it might be the worst 3d zelda dungeon i have ever seen and the water temple might be even worse.

    Ages has so many obnoxius minigames and puzzles like Gorons Dance Hall and the Librarian invisible floor that you needs to do twice, is not the dungeons and it puzzles (that i found the colored dice and the colored statues pretty neat puzzles) but thouse 2 minigames/puzzles that demotivated me alot so much that i resorted to Save States.
    Seasons is also my favorite of both due it seasons gimmick, the Roc Cape, the Magnet Glove, Subrosia and the Subrosians as well the better Rosa(Not that i hates Waifu Tree).
    Not that Ages don't haves it value despite all thouse issuses, like for example explorable underwater sections and the time travel mechanic realy expands the amount of places to explores a felling that i could not have whit the season changing gimmick nor Subrosia offers that much exploration expansion.

    Your video is very informative, but are you tired? I ask that because you sound tired in your narration and lack much enthusiasm. Great video though, but my constructive criticism since I do like this video but definitely noticed the lack of enthusiasm in narration, try to speak in a more excited tone without overdoing it. That can be complicated of course because enthusiasm is good but too much enthusiasm is obnoxious.
    A friend of mine said it best. Narration is an art. It takes practice. I don't do narration as much as I used to and I'm sure there are things I can improve upon as well. Good luck growing your channel and thank you for clearing things up on which game to play first.
    So I once had both of these games on my 2DS via the eShop years ago. Okay they are still on my 2DS but since having a Switch I almost never played the 2DS despite a lot of great 3DS and DS and downloaded games on it. But yes I did play a little of both Oracle games on 2DS. Never played them on Gameboy Color as for whatever reason I didn't play much Zelda back then besides A Link to the Past.
    I've heard that Seasons is more combat orientated and Ages is more puzzle orientated. Thank you for reminding me of that, I completely forgot. So I chose Ages first because honestly time travel always sounds cooler. After returning to the Maku tree in the present after saving it in the past I decided to start Seasons and I even noticed that I completed the first dungeon in a time not much longer than it took to go to the past, save the baby tree and see the tree again in the present in Ages.
    So to go along with what you said about Ages being harder, it appears to be even longer because it took surprisingly long to get to the first dungeon in Ages while it took a pretty short time to get there in Seasons. I'm probably going to try to progress through both games at the same time, but I get the feeling I'll likely have Seasons done first since it is a shorter game.

      Pretty cool Nintendo released those, but I'm still annoyed with how rare it is for there to be new releases on any of the classic games for the Switch online especially the more than double the regular price expansion pack. They haven't added an N64 game since Goldeneye and that was months ago. They haven't added a Genesis game in ages(and I realize the irony there with ages being some Sega reference used in certain media especially with Ages being Sega backwards), and it was nice of them to add the first internationally released Fire Emblem on the GBA online but other than that, it's like we wait a month for them to add like 3 total games across 6 different platforms. I don't get what is the holdup at Nintendo.

      I do agree that LA has a better story, but ALTTP basically doesn't have a story outside of the manual and a trace amount of cutscenes, so I'll disagree there too.
      In terms of game design, I think the Oracle games very obviously have lots of imagination. The intricacy of the dungeons in Ages blow anything in ALTTP out of the water, and Holodrum is significantly more interesting to explore than Hyrule or Koholint. The game's have extremely diverse and creative bosses whereas most of the ALTTP bosses are floating eyeballs and worms.

    Small but impactful nitpick on the audio:
    It's too quiet. Have you tried normalizing your audio tracks?
    Irrespective of the quality of the video content itself, this poses a big inconvenience:
    Those people that will want to hear will increase the audio, resulting in the next video they watch to be too loud.
    Others just won't bother and jump right to the next video.

    • @NayruYT
      @NayruYT  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Audio is eternally tough to get right, I sent the video to a half dozen different people before uploading and none of them found it quiet but upon comparing it to my other videos at equal volume settings, I can see that you are right. I'll need to investigate why that is since I used the same post-production settings I always do, but clearly something went wrong somewhere. Thanks for pointing it out!

    • @LinkEX
      @LinkEX ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NayruYT I see. I can vaguely remember having issues with normalizing the sound if there were other sound bites in the track that were disproportionately loud. (Depending on how the 'normal' values are defined outliers might skew the median.)
      If you just want to check whether the audio is too loud or too quiet in general, I'd simply get some 'professional' videos from well-known TH-camrs and compare them to your video (either by simply playing them side by side, or comparing the waveforms in the editing software.)

    I have to disagree with this. The puzzles in ages were challenging but not brutal and most let you take your time and make mistakes. Meanwhile people massively underplay how much seasons ramps up the combat challenge compared to Ages. We also live in the internet age where guides can help with puzzles in a pinch, but nothing can make combat any easier.

    • @NayruYT

      I suppose if you're willing to look up the answers to puzzles, then naturally Ages will be the easier of the two. I just assume most people won't be doing that haha.

  • @ThePastAnalysis
    @ThePastAnalysis ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I'm stoked they're finally on the Switch! I cannot wait to play these again. I generally agree with your game order when talking about dungeon difficulty. However, I think it's a different difficulty curve for bosses and minibosses. In my opinion, Seasons has a much steeper curve in this regard. Unfortunately though, this rising difficulty in bosses doesn't continue if a player ends with Seasons. They'll go from harder and harder bosses only to fight a Twinrova and Ganon that are too easy. The Seasons gear is all based around combat and it makes a huge difference against those combined game bosses. So, if I want a harder dungeon experience and a harder Twinrova and Ganon fight, I'll end on Ages. If I want a rising difficulty in bosses and minibosses (minus Twinrova and Ganon), I'll end on Seasons.
    Personally, I have a huge bias towards Seasons! It's my favorite 2D Zelda and 4th favorite Zelda game overall. I just love the combat focus so much! It also has a world that's easy to navigate, vibrant visuals, a cool central game mechanic, and the amazing subworld of Subrosia. I don't like Ages as much, but each time I play it, I like it a bit more. It's a very solid 2D experience. I just don't dig the puzzle focus as much.

    A weird thing while its worse in a gameplay sense, a lot of the small storylines make more sense in the reverse order like Queen Ambi renuinting Cap'n, a zora in holodrum that traveled to labrynna, a goron finding the history people and Onox metions Veran but Veran never metions Onox in the linked games. And I know Seasons starts first in the manga but the mangas aren't canon even by Aonuma's own admission.

Given that they were developed by Capcom, it's really not all that surprising that they work on the same principle as Resident Evil 2, down to things that happen when you play them one way that don't the other way. Seasons has a lighter adventuring tone and is definately way easier, but I prefer Ages for the feel of its more darker and foreboding world.. which is nicely reflected in Veran who I think is the better villain compared to Ornox. Also love the main town in Ages, it's way more nostalgic for some reason.
    And ha it's nice to see Jabu Jabu's Belly mentioned, the amount of running all over the dungeon trying to deduce what the one thing you didn't do correctly, or wondering what the one vital thing or place you missed was is a crazy experience. So satisfying to figure out though.

Despite Ages supposedly having harder puzzles than Seasons (that's what people keep telling me, at least) I literally never noticed any difference in puzzle difficulty while playing, since 95% of all Zelda puzzles are child's play regardless. What I did notice was that despite having already defeated Veran the very first miniboss of Seasons still gave me trouble. I also noticed that Onox was nearly impossible to beat even with the Master Sword from the linked game. Ages -> Seasons means a good difficulty prgoression, while doing Seasons first would likely make you tear your hair out over Seasons' difficulty just to then become bored to tears playing Ages due to how easy it is in comparison.

    If you care about story consistency, I'd say Ages should be first - as whichever game you play first will have Impa introduce herself to the player, while the second will have her be like "good to see you again! too bad the world's in danger here too". This wouldn't be an issue, but with how Ages starts its plot it would be a bit too obvious to first-time players if they went with Seasons first as they're already familiar with Impa as a character; why is she introducing herself to us again, and why is she blue now? (Papyrus intensifies) As such, to prevent the intro plot twist from having less impact, I'd recommend going with Ages and following up with Seasons.

    Seasons first definitely. Ages is wayyyy more difficult in the puzzle department.
    Ages is IMO the most difficult top down Zelda and runner up to only Adventure of Link as most difficult in the series.
    Edit: hilarious, i made this comment before watching the video and you just said exactly what i did 😂.

    I broke ages on accident on my first playthrough. BEWARE THE DARKNESS GIMMICK

    I play ages first, so that the combat focused gameplay of seasons will be a little easier. I also love puzzles, so I like Ages slightly more.

    Am currently in the middle of my first playthrough and started with ages. Honestly, i played all the classic zelda games up to majoras mask before and i have to say, puzzlewise oracle of ages is basically the hardest zelda game of them all, and i doubt that there are later zelda games that are harder. Couldn‘t even figure out how to get the first small key in jabu jabus belly without a walkthrough.
