    WOW what a perfect in-depth study of batteries. This is only the start. As I will listen to the other lectures. As a marine engineer that deals with measurements of SG, V, and Amps of deep batteries that need to run all our essential emergency gear, and emergency lights during a blackout. It has helped me to see where we may need a new set of batteries to handle the workload..Thank you for your clarity in explaining an often misunderstood subject. Great Job !!!!!again Thank you .

      I think you inverted the C rate to be time instead of 1/time though? And as a result you got lower currents for higher C rates when my understanding is that there is less time and higher currents for increasing c rates.

      +Daniel Cavanagh C rating is super confusing because it's used to represent nominal capacity AND discharge/charge rates. When used to represent nominal capacity I like to think of C rating as a timed test. (example: Battery X might have a capacity of 200Ah when subjected to a 20 hour test, however, battery X might have a 220Ah capacity when subjected to a longer 100 hour test). Whereas when C rating is used to represent discharge/charge rate I like to think of C rating as a "function of rated capacity" Check out the "Battery Discharge Characteristics" and "Battery Charging Methods" lectures for further clarification.

    I'm just starting out but I have a 264 watt hour battery, with two panels that produces over a hundred Watts. I need a bigger battery. 😁, Awesome video.

    Are these ratings for batteries applicable to FUEL CELLS?
    Another EXCELLENT presentation! I learned a lot about the explanation of the ratings & I work with all types of batteries!

      +Don G. I can't even consider myself a fuel cell novice however energy capacity, regardless of form, can be expressed in units of J, Nm, ft*lbf, kWh (power times time) or even Ah (like a battery with an assumed nominal voltage)

    Fantastic Series! Question. What or when do you consider the depth of discharge to be? The voltage read when the battery dips to a discharged voltage while under load? Or, after the load is removed and an hour later, after recovery?

      Accurate measurements of state of charge are best made when the battery is at rest (ie: open circuit voltage) rather than when the battery is delivering current to a load (ie: working voltage).

      @@bigbadtech Thank You. Perhaps I am being too thick headed here. If I have a fully charged 12 volt battery, say at 12.7x volts, and I connect a 6 amp load to it and the voltage immediately drops to 12.35, (indicating an immediate 20%dod state, immediately) is that the true state of discharge? It lost 20% of it's charge in the first 2 minutes?
      Or would you wait until it has recovered from being discharged, say 12 hours to get an accurate state of discharge?
      Only reason I ask is I occasionally cycle these deep cycle batteries to 12.10 or so (30%dod) just to see what kind of run times I am getting and when it drops to 12.10v, that is when I pull the load off. Is that value, 12.10 an accurate 30%dod, or should I wait till after recovery and then measure the voltage, like 12-24 hours later. Thanks for your help, much obliged.

      @@sammyboyde6489 Like he said, check when the battery is "at rest". As a general rule of thumb, waiting one hour should be long enough for all the battery's internal chemistry to stabilize. But it also depends on what specific measurements you want to take. Checking them at rest is a good way to test their State of Charge (he covers SOC in another video). If you need to know how much your battery can deliver while under load, then test them while they are being discharged.

    Question: I’m working with a battery charger and there is a parameter named Ki. I can’t find any information from the manufacturer or online about what this parameter is for. Any idea? Thank you Jim.

      Jim Pytel yes. Battery charging Ki=11, Battery charging Kp=0 (also don’t know what this value indicates)

      Aha ... most likely these values refer to PID control constants. Ki = integral, Kp=propotional , Kd=derivative. These values allow a closed loop controller to maintain output within a reasonable time, a minimum of overshoot, and minimum settling. PID control is worthy of not just another lecture but rather another complete playlist! Stay in touch, eventually I'd like to cover more advanced material like this.

    What is the fully charged voltage of a SLA battery? 12.5, 12.8, 13.2?

      That's a million dollar question. Honestly only way to get a straight answer is to refer to that exact battery's data sheet

    i was using a grinder cutting metal , and showering ten battery's with millions of sparks , with the caps off while charging ''' and no explosion ''' lipo straight in to dc lead acid ' trickle charge from normal dc charger '''' this week i have either been extremely lucky or its all total bollocks .

      It's only small quantiees of hydrogen. It is theoretically explosive and probably would be dangerous if dealing with a big poorly vented battery farm. Get some aluminium and caustic soda and box of matches ( and safety glasses )and have a play if you want to get a feel for the forces involved.

    do not be dismayed-- anode is + and cathode is - and he is confusing you by combining convention theory and electron theory and + and - charged- I will not use this my in classes.

      Incorrect. Check out Battery University: batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/bu_104b_building_blocks_of_a_battery As I stated the terms are defined by their function. Conventional current leaves the cathode and enters the anode. True for a battery. True for a diode.
