Watching Yeol Eum Son play is like reading a romantic novel, the passion, intrigue, disappointment, and rekindling, all while listening and enjoying a delightful Schumann Fantasy in C. Very enjoyable indeed.
Stunning performance. Oh, the ending! -- like saying good-bye to a loved one for good. Dying, maybe, departing in some way, lingering but approaching the moment of termination. Pain mixed with beauty. Will we ever know whether Robert Schumann experienced something that became this exquisite piece of music?
The Gold Standard recording for this piece for me has always been by the late Hiroko Nakamura, on Sony Essential Classics. No one has ever come even close to that performance until I heard and saw Ms. Son here. An incredibly difficult and imposing composition to take on by even the most accomplished pianists. Done by Ms.Son with great sensitively, power, control and most importantly passion as deep as the ocean. Thank You
This has always been, for me, the most passionate outpouring of Romanticism in music. I've loved it for many decades and have heard too many performances to count--none, sadly, in person. I just heard Son's Onyx recording for the first time, and it's simply gorgeous. The pianism, the soul that understands the music, and the physical prowess that conveys it are breathtaking. And the sound captures it all in glowing detail. So this video is a real wonder. I've loved Son's playing since hearing her in the Cliburn Competition, which I thought she should have won in a walkover. She has matured into a truly special artist. Thank you Yeol Eum. This performance now ranks with my handful of best-of-the-best.
I have to admit that among all Schumanns op 17 interpretations this is the best I have heard so far. It is probably due to the pianist, Yeol Eum Son, who lets this music shimmer they way it was meant to shimmer. For me this is a new revelation, and foregive me for just two month ago saying that I only liked op 15 and op 16. Now I like op 15, 16 and 17. But they have to be played by Yeol Eum Son.
An absolute stunning performance! I have been on a bit of a Schumann Fantasie binge of late. Her interpretation of the 3rd movement brought me to tears. I had no idea she was this good. She is a true artist and master communicator at the piano. Thank You for posting this.
At times Yeol Eum Sons' music holds me in a state wonder. So soothing and fragile, undeserved raptures. Her music can steal hours away from you if you let it. I'm spoiled. 👏👏👏 Thank you! 🙏😁😎
No one ever has or ever will play the Fantasia so brilliantly ! Sadly this work was never performed in public during Schumann's lifetime . I hope he is now able to look down and hear your beautiful , elegant , stylish and perfect performance of his masterpiece .
20:46 she refuses to suffer like Schumann did. And dictate now her appetite and dominance. What a strange and magical moment ... there is no more place for howling or pain, but only for her unique music making .... the girl has incredible guts ..
Such formidable playing! Yes there were some missed notes here and there, but hey its a live performance and not everyone can nail that treacherous 2nd movement coda with the octave leaps in opposing directions. She does a great job. Her reading is superbly rendered. And the final movement is a slice of heaven. Worth noting is that in that final movement she takes the original ending that was discarded by Schumann prior to publication for whatever reasons he thought. But Son resurrects it and makes it seem so right and brings closure to the whole piece. Thanks to Andras Schiff who discovered the original ending in a Budapest library on a tip from the musicologist Charles Rosen.
Well, just about nobody, including Horowitz and Richter, could, in live performance, nail those famous concluding leaps in the 2nd movement. Pollini reportedly succeeded.....but.... well.... that's Pollini--- a technically precise dynamo, at least at one time.
I. Durchaus fantastisch und leidenschaftlich vorzutragen 0:12 II. Mäßig. Durchaus energisch 12:57 III. Langsam getragen.
Isn´t her playing in this just formidable? As I always have loved Yeol Eum Sons playing in op.15, op.16, I also now love her op.17, what an experience this is to me. There are no others to match her beautiful interpretatations, as I see it. So I am an honourable guest at this party, I hope. To celebrate her opus 15, opus 16 and opus 17. And to celebrate Robert Schumann. Never has this been done better, I believe, hope and am pretty sure of.
Actually I'm not a fan of these kinds of music but I really appreciate them. They are like conveying hidden messages through the melody that the piano makes. Also I really adore her way of playing. It's like her hands have their own brains and they are moving and playing keys voluntarily.
Great musician! Beautiful! Sensitive. Emphasising. An asian artist who really got a deeper look into the architecture of European composers. A thousand times more qualified and interesting than as played by guys like Yulia Wang or Lang Lang. Great job! Thank you!
1st English translation of above. 00.00 Durhaus : play as a passionate fantasy 12.58 play energetically but with sensitive control 20.44 play slowly, quietly and gently throughout ::Yeol-Eum Son has recently put up her interpretations of Schumann's four consecutive solo piano masterworks , opera 15,16,17,18. It is now 66 years since I had heard all of them and, though I have heard many great pianists play them over the years, I have never heard any one do what she has managed to do. At that time in his life Schumann was starting to suffer from manic depression and could only sooth his mind in three ways. 1) with poetry, 2) by letting his beloved Clara play his music for him and 3) turn the extraordinary variety of pictures, thoughts and memories in his uncontrollably passionate mind into piano music. Yeol Eum is the first person who worked out how to convey the tragic beauty of his illness. She got inside his head, and what she then did was to produce what we hear now. A type of genius reserved for very, very few people in any walk of life. But beauty beyond belief.
@Mazzel Tov I don't mind you criticising my opinion, that is what opinions are for. But one thing I would stress very strongly. I too knew and studied with Michelangeli and rank him amongst the greatest pianists I ever heard. Each of the others you mentioned were indeed maestri but they all lacked one thing and had another in common. They all played the music in front of them how it sounded to them, but none tried to convey what Schumann, in his mental agony, was trying to say in music. Probably because he knew he was not that good a pianist. Maybe Clara was, we'll never know. But what Yeol Eum does here is lose herself in the music, something I have never heard anybody else so with this piece. You may have noticed that all the pianists you mention are men. But Schumann wrote this for a woman, for Clara, and Son is the first musician to bring out the beauty of this fantasy by just playing it as herself. I honestly don't believe a man could do this and make it sound like Schumann imagined it. He could only compose it, because it was a female face he saw when he did so. I don't know how much is written about his terrible depression, but it was being conscious of his own inadequacy as a pianist that frustrated him so terribly. Do forgive my hyperbole in saying anyone is the greatest ever at anything. A momentary reaction to what I was hearing. That is not something one can ever say about another person.:),Ciao. Anton
@Mazzel Tov Bologna University in 1966 when I was finishing a PhD in hagiography. He was a shy gentleman who loved talking about his art to young students (I was 23 then) who would sit round the piano for about an hour while he explained many aspects of his music. I was at four of these sessions in seven months, amongst the greatest memories of my life.
@Mazzel Tov lucky you! I loved the piano from the age of four but never played to your level, I just loved the music. Our chats on music with Michelangeli were a real bonus for those students who loved music. He seemed so glad to talk about something he loved to people who loved listening. I never used my academic degrees for my work. I was a journalist and spent half my life covering seven wars. Music was my tranquiliser.
@Mazzel Tov sorry I missed the second line of your reply : Actually I would certainly call listening to a genius explaining why and how he loved his gift was very definitely a form of "study". I was reading for a doctorate in why certain people were classified and revered in the way they were and that was certainly studying. . Listening to other people talking about things that enthral both you and them is certainly a form of study. My reference to "his music" is actually a quote from him! He would talk about 'my music' in the sense of the sounds he subjectively produced by doing what he did when playing the piano. After all the possessive adjective can only be used in relation to the person or object which owns, produces or advocates it.
@Mazzel Tov Many thanks for your detailed response on Michelangeli, I agreed with nearly all the points you made and greatly appreciated the time you spent commenting on so much. I think we have to agree that we were approaching the subject from different perspectives. You are obviously an accomplished pianist who dedicated your time with ABM to being taught the most important points in playing the piano to the best of your ability. I would love to hear you play. I, however, had the great good fortune to spend a total of four hours in absorbing his explanation of WHY he loved what he did. I was interested more in his linguistic communication than having a piano lesson. I am fluent in five European (French, Spanish, Italian, English, German) languages and four Asian (Vietnamese, Korean, Cantonese &. Japanese) but am mainly interested in how people of different tongues can learn to comprehend each other. It was a great help having parents of different nationalities to me and to each other. Rather like having pianists as parents. But it still involved hours of practice and study at five universities (Sorbonne, Geneva, Bologna, Seoul & Hong Kong) absorbing manual and facial gestures as much as vocabulary, phrases and grammar. But as with your work on piano playing, I had to love learning so many tongues to succeed. My wife is Korean and we live mostly in Paris now. May I wish you all the best in this covid world which has kept us apart from our children and grandchildren for more than a year. Ciao. Anton
Thank you. If I may add, thank you (so much) for your insight. No other composer can translate such profound quirks into indelible universal code. In that regard no one was more genius than Schumann, no one I'm afraid.
MAGNIFICO
Probably I am now an addict to Yeol Eum Sons playing, and has lost my critical sense of listening. I hope it is not so bad! The problem is that I like all her playing, in Schumann op 15, 16 and 17, without any critical point of wiev at all. And this op 17 I just love. I find it heartbreaking and wonderful. Please help me.
Watching Yeol Eum Son play is like reading a romantic novel, the passion, intrigue, disappointment, and rekindling, all while listening and enjoying a delightful Schumann Fantasy in C. Very enjoyable indeed.

The only performance I keep returning to. I'm so happy to be alive at the same time as YES 💕

Clara^^^
She doesn’t just play the piano but lives in the music she interprets. Therefore the performance touches the listener so deeply. Outstanding!
🙏
can't agree more.

Well said, but for me either Leif Ove Andsnes or John Lill are the greatest recordings, but nobody has achieved a better live performance than this.

I second every word. I couldn't have said it better.

Always deeply emotionally played, a real artist in all sens of the word.

Thanks 😊
Exquisitely moving. Thank you Yeol Eum for another mesmerizing performance.

É a maís pura paz !!! Gratidão , de verdade .❤🌹🌹🌹

This was truly breathtaking. A performance for the ages, in my opinion. Thank you, Ms. Son, for sharing your gift with us at this time and always.
One word is enough to describe both the performance and the performer: beautiful!
Truly gorgeous and remarkable playing!!!
Beautifully done. Imaginative and moving.
Unbelievably good
Actually I'm not a fan of these kinds of music but I really appreciate them.
Great job! Thank you!
There's no doubting the pianistic ability of both Lang & Wang but the 'extra' that this remarkable young woman gives us is fabulous musicianship too.

1st English translation of above. 00.00 Durhaus : play as a passionate fantasy
12.58 play energetically but with sensitive control
20.44 play slowly, quietly and gently throughout ::Yeol-Eum Son has recently put up her interpretations of Schumann's four consecutive solo piano masterworks , opera 15,16,17,18.
Wonderful performance. I have always felt the short sections starting at 3m28s and 10m40s are pure genius.
Thank you. If I may add, thank you (so much) for your insight. No other composer can translate such profound quirks into indelible universal code. In that regard no one was more genius than Schumann, no one I'm afraid.
Exacto!!! Nunca mejor dicho
what lovely music, how can she possibly remember all of it. and it is a BIG composition, a veritable masterpiece.

Just amazing. Superb. I am in love.
