Programming a Ford key fob for push button systems

- This video was made for a 2017 ford fusion. However the process works with any of the intelligent keys where you use the push button start system for the 2017 and up Ford models. Below is a step-by-step process for how to program Additional key fobs. You can read the instructions or watch the video.
1. You must first have two programed keys and all of the keys have to be in the vehicle.
2. Remove the top portion of the keychain so just the remote is able to sit inside the pocket.
3. Locate the pocket in your vehicle, refer to your owners manual for the location. They are usually found in the center console of the vehicles.
4. Insert your first programed key fob into the pocket. Press the start button wait five seconds. Press the start stop button. Remove the key from the pocket.
5. Insert your second programed key fob into the pocket. Press the start button wait five seconds. Press the start stop button. Remove the key from the pocket.
6. Place the unprogrammed key into the pocket. Press and hold the start button until the horn chirps and the hazard lights flash.
7. Place your foot on the brake and start the vehicle by pushing the start stop button. A message should display on the screen that says key program successful. If not it will say key program unsuccessful and you will need to repeat the process.
I did this video Because of many poor videos and bad information that I found when trying to program these myself. I hope you found it helpful and thank you very much.
Man all the online instructions I saw never mentioned holding the start button when programming the 3rd key. You my man are a lifesaver because I couldn't figure out why it wasn't working. Thank you!
This works like a charm. 2021 Ford Escape.
For those having issues, the buttons should be face down, and accessory OFF when you put the key in the pocket. Push and release button THEN count to 5. Then push and release button and count to 5 again. Then swap to 2nd programmed fob and repeat. When you swap third fob in and hold the button the message showing success will pop up around 3 seconds in. It will actually say that for the next two start cycles(at least it did in my car ).
These are the best instruction around for Mustang. Most forget things like removing the key. You have to do these steps like you know what you are doing - one right after the other, no pauses. You got to do it smoothly. Take the old one out, and immediately pop in the new one. IMMEDIATELY press and hold the ignition. You got like 2 seconds to press the break. Keep your eyes on the dashboard, cause you will get message like "successful program key" , the signal blinker when in program mode, etc .. Thanks a million.

Thank you... These are the instructions Ford dealers don't want you to know. 2012 Escape Owners manual only show the key code, not how to program a 3rd key 🗝. Dealer quoted me $400 with a new key or $130 if I provided it. It took all of 5 minutes to program #3.

The key should only run you around $150 to 170 each. I agree it's insanely expensive, but it's what the charge currently is. These prices over time will come down as new models are introduced, but for the next few years they are going to be very pricey. I have two newer Fords I keep four sets of keys in my house, that way if I lose one I can always reprogram another one. With the new price of keys it took me a few months to save up to buy them.
I had trouble at first, but I found that the one-mississippi method of counting to five made the difference. Before that I was not waiting long enough, the five second pauses were critical. Thanks!
Thank you, thank you. I bought a non OEM fob which I didn’t think about at the time being non a oem. Would.not program and I watched several TH-cam’s and did just as they said. It’s a 2020 F150 push to start. Watched your’s and you were the only one I watched that said push and HOLD on the last key fob. That did it! It’s programmed all for $29. Thanks again!
The non OEM key fobs are roll of the dice for sure. But over the years I've had several that have worked a few that have not.
My 2013 was on pages 59 & 60. TY for the heads up. saved me a lot of time

You have to have two programmed keys to program an additional key. $200 is a bit steep for that service. Many locksmiths can program keys, and prices vary. I would caution trying to program any key that is not OEM or comes from China. I have seen several not program then you are out a programming fee and still need a key.

I tried it many times in my 2017 Explorer, but was never sure just where to put the fobs!!! I tried the small compartment that looks like it could hold pencils on the front inside of the center console, and the front cup holder, which didn't fit well. No joy. Please help!

Really good job. Would only say that some of your way that you rolled out the verbal direction change with same direction did it make a little hard to follow. But I will say that I did look at the owners manual. same functionality of programming. A key fob on my 2020 mustang (owners manual pages 66 and 67. Thank you for your help.

Thank you Cody for making up this video. I have a 2015 Ford Explorer with the intelligent keys. The unfortunate thing for me is that I don't have two keys I only have one. There must be some trick to be able to program an extra key with only one original. I know Ford probably said that you must have both keys but my experience has been that information from the dealers is sometimes not correct. So with my 2015 Explorer I just thought I'd ask where you got your information from so that I can do a little bit of delving into the two key issue.

Unfortunately to make an additional you have to have to programmed keys. There's no trick or work around that is just how the system is designed. The keys are part of the anti-theft system in order to encode the system correctly you have to have two keys. Having worked around other manufacturers Fords is a little harder than others to do.
After two hours of trying different things and researching online (this was the last video I looked at), I was about to call a Ford dealership to organise getting my 2nd key reprogrammed when I thought I’d double check my new key battery was in the correct way, it was in correct but I failed to remove a little sticker on the battery warning of batteries and small children choking which was stopping contact with the small circuit board in the fob 🙈🙈🙈🙈………..been one of them days!!!!!!!!!!!

There was no way I was going to be paying that at a dealer or anywhere else for that matter . 17 GT I got didn't come with the second key program thought I finally do some digging after almost a year with it. Going to try it once I get home.

What if you only have 1 programmed key will this still work? And does this work for ford focus 2013 as well
I expect it will be more or less the same. It should say somthing in the owners manual.

I followed the instructions and got the message that said it was successful but it did not program my unprogrammed key Fob....
This worked on my 2016 for Explorer. I technically used the truck fob which has a tailgate icon instead of the lift gate for the 3rd fob but it still worked!

After NY sales tax, you saved me about $170. One question: Now that I have 3 keys programmed, do I need all 3 to program a 4th key?

It has to do with the ecm security.
Example. Your friend loans you their car. They give you one key. And you make a second key….not cool. Only the true owner should have acces to two keys.
Hence the security.
My keyfob exploded, so I have one working. You mention three on here, can I do it with two? I.e. Put in the working one, then the new one, will it be programmed?
No you need 2 already programed keys in order to program any additional keys.
So what do you do if you only have one key programmed and need the 2nd key to be programmed? If I had 2 already why would I need a 3rd?
@@westmidlandsautocare9737 If you have only one key you need to get an automotive locksmith (cheaper than the dealer) to do it. You can also purchase on of those $1000+ scanners from Snap-on, Autel or Launch, to name a few to do it yourself.

How old is the fob? It is possible that the battery in the fob needs changed. If the battery is good, was this a factory fob? I have seen a few of the cheap fobs program and then not start the vehicle.

Unfortunately you have to have 2 programmed keys programmed keys. This is to program an additional key.

2016 Fiesta proximity key, do I need 2 programmed keys to add a new key - probably yes? We puts keys in coffee cup holder pocket too? For all adding a new key for Ford prox. keys, we need 2 programmed keys to start out, and put them in the pocket to turn on correct? Does the 2 programmed keys only apply to proximity key push start type Ford? I do have ikey key programmer though so not sure I need 2 keys or not.

You'll have to contact a locksmith or take it to a dealer. It really isn't that hard to program a new key with the proper equipment. My dealership charges $50.
Not working for me 2016 expedition. I have two programmed keys and a third new. Pushing the start / stop button as you instruct put the car in accessory mode on the first press then a second mode with the power / ac on with the second press. The next press (the first press on the second key) shuts the car down completely. The second press on the second key puts the car into accessory mode again and then the next press, holding the start / stop button down puts it into the mode where the power / ac is on. Is this correct?? Is there another way to put it into programming mode?

@@mauricegarrett1272 The instructions are for programming and additional key. You have to have to programmed ones. I let everybody know most locksmiths can do this. There's even company springing up that do just key programming. And aftermarket fob will run you $150 to $170. And OEM will run 170 to 200 depending on what dealership you go to. My dealership charges $50 to program a key
I don't think you should pay over $100 to have one programmed.
I own a 2013 Ford Fusion Titanium. Can I program a key fob from another Ford vehicle to my fusion? For example if I have a used Ford explorer key fob that looks the same as mine.

Is there any reason to get the actual key cut (other than to gain access if battery is dead)? It appears the key doesn't have a chip or anything and everything is in the keyless part, is this correct?
The skeleton key is only for access, You are correct it will not start the vehicle. If you have a locking glove box or compartment in your vehicle it will also work on that.

Very sorry for your loss. The only way an additional key can be programmed when only having one programmed key is to take it to a dealer. They should be able to program the other key fob you have to the car. At least that saves you that expense. If it has a door code ask them to give you that as well as it is right there in the computer system when they're programming.
When you push the start/stop button when you first start, do you hold it down for 5 seconds or do you just press it, put fob in position, then push button again and remove key? I have one programmed already and need to program second key thank you! 😊

unfortunally there is an issue with the new keyfob for my dad's new 2022 maverick. keyfob is programmed successfully, but buttons dont work
I would say if you're having an issue with a Ford purchased 2022 key fob that's under warranty in a dealer to get that fixed.

You need to go to a locksmith or a dealer. It should not cost more than $50 to $75. I highly recommend once you have two program keys follow the procedure for an additional. That way if you happen to lose one you can always make another as you will have two keys.

This process does not work for 2018 F350. Might be because I'm trying to replace the admin key?
Procedure does not work, owners manual (pg.69) says buttons should be up in the slot, not down on all the fobs, yet still does not program third remote, another video said press and hold the start button for the 3rd unprogrammed fob until the horn beeps, that never happened, and still didn't program. Even checked to make sure battery was 3 volts. So not sure what's up with this remote procedure.
Sometimes it's a little tricky to get it time just right. I have had instances however where they just don't program it has to be taken into a dealer or to a locksmith. FYI I'm a service manager for a Ford dealer, and that is the procedure straight from Ford that I've had work on many vehicles. Again, not all take. I don't have a good reason as to why but sometimes we have to bring them into the shop and program them.

You do not have to reprogram after the battery was replaced. If it is not working post the battery replacement, I would guess the battery was put in incorrectly. I see that a lot that It gets put in upside down.
Just to be crystal clear, at the end of step 6, shouldn’t it say “Release the start/stop button”?
You're tapping my memory banks a little bit. However I believe I had to hold it down until the horn chirped and then release the button.

Do you know if I can use key fobs that were previously programmed to a different car? I went to ford to have this done and they said they couldn't do it because the keys were from a different car (Same year and model) They then followed it up with " you can get a new key from us for $400" and still charged me for the programming even though they couldn't do it. I feel like I was just trying to be scammed into spending money at their dealership. If someone knows if its possible to reprogram a used key please let me know. If I'm able to get a used key programmed to my car, I will be marching my ass into the Ford dealership to let them know
If they are the correct part number they should program to your car regardless. I really hate it when dealerships try to take advantage of people. I'm a service manager for Ford, I work at dealership. It's part of the reason why I put that video together was to help people out. If they came from the same year same make same model and they're the exact same remote yes they will program. Many locksmiths have the capability of programming these keys now. Reach out to one and see if they can do it for you. Realistically it shouldn't cost you more than $50 to $100 to do this the process it literally takes 30 to 45 minutes. Sometimes Ford's IDS system likes to lock up I can take a little longer, but that's not the customer's fault.
On a 2013 Ford c-max Energi how do you program a third administrator key fob. Can you reprogram a restricted mykey to be an administrator key?
I'm going to do some research on this as I usually have one of my technicians deactivate the my key. However my understanding is if you have an administrator you can turn the feature off on the other keys.
After researching this, it looks like if you want the MyKey reset you will have to take it into a dealer. You can program an additional key. Is this a push button or a actual keyed vehicle?

I just bought a 2018 Fusion from Malloy Ford - Toyota - Chevrolet in Winchester, VA and when I asked where my other key fob was, they laughed at me and told me I need to buy it. They only gave me one key fob. Aren't they required to provide me with two key fobs?
Sadly when you purchase a vehicle it is as is. That is something you need to definitely negotiate into the contract in writing before you ever make the purchase. My recommendation is get with a Ford dealer in your area, have them give you a quote as to what it would cost for the key and to reprogram it. These keys are expensive if you consider your car will not run without them you need make sure you have two functioning keys. For me personally I keep for 1 for my spouse, myself and two spares. I do this with every vehicle I own.

If you have the other key fob it might work. If you put the damaged fob in the "secret" spot and it starts the car it should program an additional fob.

@@tcctech3211 sad thing is when they sell you the car they know that. Where I work we have a policy that every customer gets two keys. There are many businesses now, locksmiths and people who just do key programming look in your area sometimes you can get this done at an affordable rate. I caution you to stay away from the Amazon keys.

I got two fobs when I got my Lincoln. Shortly after lost one of them, and perhaps fell into the wrong hands. So if I were to do this procedure with the key I have, will the lost key not work?

To the best of my knowledge when you program a new set of keys to the vehicle the old fob will not work.

If you have two programmed keys it will program a third. Actual key, not a push button, insert the first programmed key in count to five take it out insert the second programmed key in count to five insert the unprogrammed key in to the on position, do not start it. The locks should cycle and the key will be programmed. Take the key out and then start the vehicle.
I was hoping this procedure might still work with a 2022 Ford Bronco Sport. I have two OEM key fobs, but was unable to program a third fob. It seems to fail at step #6, no horn or lights. Appreciate any updates you know about for 2022.

So confused. Have a 2012 titanium focus 1.6tdci and cannot for the life of me work out how to program another key. Bought 2 weeks ago with just one key provided and purchased spare offline to program. However cant work out where this area in console is as keyless push ignition. Yep ditzy female here trying to be cleaver and sort myself. Any help greatly appreciated xx

Hi, I have a Mondeo Hybrid Sync3 with 2 master Key and 1 new After market (433,92 MHz) key but your indications not works to program the 3th new Key. Do you know if it's possibile with Mondeo Hybrid Sync3 2019? Thank you very much!
As I'm not familiar with that vehicle I don't know if the directions would be the same. Many times they use Ford electronics or engines, and do their own programming when it's a foreign vehicle. This was classic with Mazda everything in it was Ford, but we could not talk to it with our computers at the shops. Ultimately I had to go to a Mazda dealer, your case may be the same.

I would look in the center console or the glove box. If you download the owner's manual it will tell you where it will be located in your vehicle model.

You can give it a try as long as you have two programmed keys. Technically the systems were the same those model years.

Sorry for the late reply, TH-cam is horrible about notifying me of messages, I have to go into studio and seek them out. You would have to take that to a dealer most likely to be reprogrammed. If it's the original key with the vehicle the keyless entry features made out work but it should start the car. If this is the case I would install a battery in the remote to get those features working again. However if this is a key that is not programmed to the car it will have to go to a dealer. I've said this in many of my threads We charge $50 to program those keys I think a fair price in today's market is somewhere between $50 and $90 in labor any more than that find another dealer.

So your remote may be damaged however you should be able to still program another key. The best way to test this would be to get in your owner's manual find where the secret key slot is. With the Ford logo facing down and your key fob buttons facing up place it in that holder and if it starts to car then you can program additional keys.

My apologies but I'm pretty much a Ford guy through and through I would think the process with Toyota would be similar to Ford however I don't know. I would recommend looking into your owner's manual they're usually is a guide that will tell you whether you can program additional keys or not.
