Of course Anna is great but huge shoutout to Fumi Nikaido - her acting throughout has been superb and brought Ochiba no Kata to life with all her complexity 👏
The phrase "花は桜木、人は武士" (hana wa sakuragi, hito wa bushi) is a Japanese proverb that translates to "Among flowers, the cherry blossom; among men, the samurai." This expression emphasizes the ideal qualities associated with cherry blossoms and samurai. Cherry blossoms, or sakura, are revered for their beauty and their transient nature, blooming brilliantly and then swiftly falling away. This is seen as a metaphor for the ideal attributes of a samurai, who was expected to live with courage, honor, and an acute awareness of the ephemeral nature of life, ready to sacrifice himself at any moment for his lord and principles. The saying highlights the embodiment of beauty and brevity in flowers and the virtues of bravery and honor in people.
Thanks for explaining that. The English subtitles did it no justice - "flowers are only flowers because they fall" wat, that makes no sense, they're flower b/c they bloom. But you made it make sense.

You all are missing the subtlety here. If this was an earlier episode, they would have expected Blackthorne to be that ill mannered and not bow before leaving. However, at this point, he absolutely knows his manners within the culture, and he knows Lady Ociba’s extremely high rank. Him leaving like that without bowing is him intentionally showing his level of displeasure and disrespect towards Lady Ochiba for saying words that hurt Lady Mariko, who he very clearly has feelings for. Even Mariko takes a very brief moment to realize this after she bows and notices that Blackthorne knows better, but has chosen to make his disdain for Lady Ochiba super plain because he has feelings for her.
@@EbonySeraphim So sorry, but you are mistaken. Blackthorne was off camera as Lady Mariko said, "We should go now". This episode (Crimson Sky) is one of the best episodes of television in forever and was the masterpiece of the series. Mariko's powerful defiance of Ishido, her poetic and subtextual talk with Lady Ochiba (flowers are flowers), her defiant attempt to leave the castle, the powerful understanding between her and Blackthorne, when he steps forward to second her when she dares to commit seppuku, and her tragic death (let it come). It was a tour de force and I will remember it for a very long time. One person truly can topple an army. Amazing
The script is touching audiences hearts. And the acting of the ladies in this scene is so real it made me feel the pain. The pain as if they suffer in their real life.
Mariko was able to say goodbye to her best friend before she went. The bond between friends are very strong, I'm sure Ochiba was heartbroken upon learning of what happened.
This is also why she assured that Mariko's family honor would be restored when she stated that "We will graciously honor her burial." before any consideration of war. Even though it was her own father that was murdered, she wouldn't have done that if she truly believed Akechi Jinsei's actions were not for the betterment of Japan's future.

I doubt that was the reason, i haven't read the novel but if they follow the real historical counterpart i think the only thing she wants is avoiding more pointless deaths of people close to her. Ochiba is probably the most tragic figure in this story, she lost so much that at this point in the story you can see how broken she is.

I love the writing and acting by both here. Ochiba is not Mariko's enemy -- she loves her and wants her friend to live. They're both shattered by life but Mariko is an idealist (hence Christian) would prefer to die for her ideals than live as a husk, and Ochiba's core is much more of a survivor; she's willing to do whatever it takes to win and live for her son, and sees death as surrender. I have a feeling Ochiba thought, Marikos peom was adressed at her. So she believed Mariko to be there on Toronagas behalf and with hatreted for her. But here she makes it clear, that she's not wishing any bad ill on Ochiba and that she's talking about herself and her willingness to sacrifice herself accepting her death not to hurt Ochiba but to fight Ishido. I believe she somehow convinced Ochiba, that she as the mother of the heir, is not Toronagas enemy but rather just Ishido. And when Ishido killed Mariko with his actions and acting very cold about it and her proper burial, he turned her away.
1:19 Fascinating is, "You can't bring nobility to your lord's warmongering; by being a worm on Toranaga's lure, you will not win your freedom." Only an unwise fish would strike the bait.
It's very interesting how much Ochiba loved Mariko; Mariko's father killed Ochiba's but Ochiba passed the blame and anger to Toranaga instead and fixated on it. Then later, makes a martyr of Mariko herself. It's sad to see how the circumstances of their lives and families led them to this.

Old Japanese way of making the sentence polite. When you hear modern day Japanese, tabemasu(to eat) pronounced ta-be-mas the 'u' is silent. Old Japanese would be tabemasuru ta-be-ma-su-ru. Just a ending to a verb, respectful, polite way of speaking. Remember, when you hear Mariko speaking, it is often in the presence of lords, ladies and high ranked samurai and retainers. This was the way she and other high ranked lords and ladies normally spoke to each other in formal settings. But even today, if you want to be very polite you can say arigato-go-zai-ma-SU by saying the 'u'. instead of arigato go-zai-mas silent 'u'. Thank you very much vs Thank you.
More of a jidaigeki thing, i believe they would have said 候ふ (pronounced sourou) They do say it once when someone read out a letter which was in authentic classical japanese

Spoiler Alert to anyone who has not watched, or at least finished watching.... I'm sad that they killed off Mariko-sama. She was an awesome character. I really liked her and Fuji-sama both.
They can create a season two. Clavell closed the story line in the book with a continued speech of things to come after Marico died. Marico’s death Resulted in Anjin-San devoting himself in remembering her memory by accepting the Japanese way of life and making full allegiance to Torronaga’s quest to become Shogun. In this way Anjin-San was also continuing Marico’s revenge for her families unjust demise. Japanese history itself shows a whole lifetime of historical facts that show that Anjin-San helped Toronaga to change the fate/history of Japan. With the help of the Clavell family. FX could surely continue the saga and keep the same vibe/lyric of the show. With the continued popularity of the two TV series, past and present. I would think FX could make a GOTesque season 2, 3, 4, 5,…etc! WHY WOULD’NT THEY???
They should depart from Clavel’s vision and bring Mariko back. Fake her death and Burrial (her pulse was never checked in the show). The love tension she had with John carried this show by a mile, and would easily carry any future seasons. I don’t believe this relationship can be recreated or replaced easily.
i know they keep using the word sister but there were absolutely romantic/“yuri” elements to mariko and ochiba’s relationship. hints in this scene but more visible in their full episode with the flashbacks
Any japanese here, i noticed most of the sentences end with gozarimasirisu, gozarimasruka...gozara looks like meaning permission, so is it a politeness suffix , like with your permission plz etc...
this is the first show that I can remember that I don't want it to end. I'm literally gonna fight depression after this show ends. lol. Best show in years

Ochiba speaking is all ❤❤❤
Thank you for showing this scene, Hulu🙂👍, but I don't see the "extended" part.
This and Yellowstone are the best tv shows to come out in recent years, imo.
1:19 Fascinating is, "You can't bring nobility to your lord's warmongering; by being a worm on Toranaga's lure, you will not win your freedom."
Only an unwise fish would strike the bait.
この長いバージョンの方が二人の感情がとても良くわかった。できれば、SHOGUNの他の場面での放映されなかった部分も付け加えて、ロングバージョンで再放送して欲しいです。
Mariko face card does some to meee . She’s the only reason I watched . Idk y I thought she was gonna eat those men up 😩😩 I had so much faith in her ugh imma miss her very sad ending . I love what she said about flowers only being flowers because they die 😩🙌 she was such a good poet
What's the "masaru" sound at the end of nearly every sentence Mariko says ?
Gozari-masuru is ancient auxiliary verb of being polite in front of your superiors.
@@doris31882 thanks
At this age, people had been saying "gozarimasuru" and it have changed into what we say "gozaimasu" or simply "desu" in modern Japanese now.
More of a jidaigeki thing, i believe they would have said 候ふ (pronounced sourou)
They do say it once when someone read out a letter which was in authentic classical japanese
Mariko is my favorite character ☺️☺️
When will be the next episode or Season?
Us: Now can we get the extended extended version?
Anjin: I'll take the spark notes please.
Wanted more from the final scene, but otherwise another great episode!
Woooo. The end of the episode got me shocked! I can't wait for the next episode.
I wanted LESS from the final scene, like, for it to not have happened 😅 ... 😭😭😭
film making like that should be taught in schools!
Is hulu has arabic sub??
Does anyone know the song's name in this scene (starting about 3:41)?
old japanese are so beautiful.
Who's old? Anna Sawai is 31 and Fumi Nikaido is 29.
I think he meant the language/the way they speak.
@@GregR9712old way of speaking Japanese. Think there more words and placement of the word was noticeably different from now day's Japanese speaking way.
彼等の生き様は、花が散るが如く潔いです。
It’s actually quite different from modern Japanese.
Song name? 2:33
masterful
Is hulu has arabic sub??
thanks !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Is hulu has arabic sub??
This isn't extended. It's how the scene was.
言葉の抑揚や発声のたおやかさが、往年の大女優、京マチ子さんや山田五十鈴さんのようです。
Where’s the extended version ???
how is this extended? exactly how it was in the episode
Tears
so anjin sama being there is just an excuse for Ochiba to talk to Mariko ?
Exactly.
Will there be a 2nd season?!?!?!?!
Her last words to were used by Ochiba to finish the poem. Friendship matters.
Is hulu has arabic sub??
I went to Japan two weeks ago and no one I talked to had watched this show or showed interest in it
Why would they? It’s a Hollywood fantasy of Japan. They live in the real thing.
I’m stack and scared to watch the remaining episodes bcz I don’t want it to end why did they have to give us a few amazing episodes ☺️🙁😂😂💜
I recommend reading the novel SHOGUN, and imagine it like the TV Show. I am sure it will be a wonderful experience.

I just watched Anna bag the best actress, but it seems Fui deserves it more....
waiting season 2
Great to see well written characters played by amazing actors and ZERO wokeness.
i know they keep using the word sister but there were absolutely romantic/“yuri” elements to mariko and ochiba’s relationship. hints in this scene but more visible in their full episode with the flashbacks
Not much translating going on by Mariko, was there?
This was exactly the same as the FX version, I saw nothing extended at all.
Clickbait. This scene was included
I love Mariko
All these struggles just for that old turtle of Tokugawa. What a shame.
Any japanese here, i noticed most of the sentences end with gozarimasirisu, gozarimasruka...gozara looks like meaning permission, so is it a politeness suffix , like with your permission plz etc...
~ de gozarimasuru= it is~. ~ de gozarimasuruka= Is it ~? Gozaru= is.
