One of the big points in the book is that nudity is treated as nothing in Japan. Mariko, Torinaga, Blackthorne, and a boatload of Samurai have already been skinny dipping together. I don't understand why the writers on this show insist on changing basic elements of the book, including to introduce historically wrong items (such as Mariko feeling awkward seeing Blackthorne naked).

I believe a lot of it has to do with the current day western gender politics, especially in films - strong female characters, feminism, etc... And also making sure that as many people be allowed to watch the show, including children. Nudity would have made it awkward and possibly even forbidden.
