Colin's character was treated the way female lead characters are treated in old action films. He's just there and he's the prize at the end for Penelope lol

Yeah. That’s my gripe with the lazier ‘girl power’ plot lines, they think the only way to steal back some power and write something empowering is just a role reversal where they are dominant or more centred than their partner. Instead of a woman being tied to the tracks it’s a cute and clueless guy. Hyper independence and pulling yourself out of hot water and your pretty prize waiting at the side with heart eyes for you.
Nuanced strong and independent woman are my favourite to see in fiction and reality, obviously. But it gets so…shallow and contrived when people without the sophistication try to write them?
The show is called Bridgerton, I assumed each season really focused on dual narratives or povs of the Bridgerton sibling that is holding the torch for the season. I didn’t really like how Colin is just a cheerleader and accessory for pen.
I get That the books aren’t Shakespeare…but there were little nuggets in there to really make Colin feel more dynamic and the romance feel more like a back and fourth instead of just Colin stumbling into every situation not entirely sure what’s happening with his relationship and with himself.
When Shonda said she cried at the end and after watching and finding out the context I literally laughed. I bet that ‘my purpose is to see you shine in greatness.’ Speech from Colin tugged at her. Every career girlie dreams about their man being 100% chill and ready to be the supporting cast to their main character.
They threw him a bone by having him publish some travel logs, but we already knew that’s how Polin would be in their HEA it’s more about…how they behaved in their tumult and the journey of it all that felt stale.

I think that’s why everyone hates it. We are so used to the man being the character and the woman being the plot device that when it’s switched for the main leads, most of us can’t handle it

@@ashleydenya4946 I agree maybe a few might be reductive or jump to that conclusion, but I think it’s just more about feeling frustrated that one character is favoured and given more of an arc vs another. I mean…Colin had a teeny tiny arc with his ‘shedding off insecurities and facades to be himself and accept all these new challenging realities.’ But I don’t think ANYONE was really vibing with the typical trope of a fully dimensional male character and his one dimensional trophy girl. Maybe the misogyny crew vibed with it, but I’m pretty sure everyone else feels fatigue from those stories.
I think everyone is fair to want both characters to feel fully fleshed out and for the power struggle to just…take a break for a minute and have a nice love conquers all moment without Colin having to dim himself or adjust his behaviour in fear that he is ‘stealing his powerful wife’s light.’ Because I’ve seen so many takes of people enjoying Colin being sidelined and zipping his lips when pen did her protracted speech to the queen, that if he dared to step in for his wife he’d immediately be reduced to having a hero complex and stealing her moment. I think nuance just isn’t a thing anymore. It’s all absolutes and characters are given a role and cannot budge and it stagnates them.

@@ashleydenya4946 I think women really need someone we can emotionally connect to, and just any hot guy doesn't work. Not sure how the "hot girl prize" trope worked for men, but I guess it must have since the films did well enough?

I agree with you, Colin felt more like a side character. This season felt more like the Penelope season than the Polin season. Analyzing the promotional pictures you can see, at least in my opinion, how focus they were on Pen and her persona. Which is a really big shame, because in consequence it makes Colin look like any other of the background character.

He’s the third son, they could have shown him struggling to find an identity outside of the shadows of his brothers. Even within the family he can be overlooked, and that would have made his desire to make something of himself, to be is use, more believable.

his character is more fleshed out in the first and second season than in the third honestly. you can see he struggles so hard with his family, can’t relate much to his two older brothers or youngest brother. when he courted marina he was constantly dismissed by his family or any choice he makes for the matter. if they only focused more on polin than the other relations we could’ve had such a different outcome

Colin was literally the damsel in distress. Anytime he tried to do something, he made things worse and had to have Penelope to help him every single time. Colin in the books was a man who felt embarrassed that he hadn't found his meaning in life, and his angry towards Penelope wasn't because she said bad things in Whistledown, it was because Penelope already knows who she is and he felt jealous. And the show didn't go into this detail about him until like the last 20 mins which made it half-baked.

Debling gave up at the first hurdle - I want Pen to be able to assess and choose based on her needs and heart. Instead Colin ended up making the choice for her and she had to marry him or be shamed forever. Like boooooooooo that’s not romantic

I agree. Colin's character (no matter how others try to justify it for this season) was out of wack. They did not give enough background to understand him. He just seems boring and privileged when compared to Pen and even Cressida who actually had problems especially when Colin has supportive brothers and sisters. This season was a let down for me because the set him up only to pull a 180 on him. I also don't think the added plot of him teaching Pen "how to court" was needed at all.
The fact is, he has been stale with regard to his relationship with Pen. And for two seasons we saw it from Pen's view, but I think it would've been better if we saw it more from his view, like their first meeting, and how he may have clung to moments when Pen was being more authentic with her quick remarks but she never revealed herself much to him which is why he couldn't see her more than a friend even though he was attracted to her. There were so many things they could have done that would've fixed this problem.

Colin and Penelope felt more like side characters in their own season... which was super disappointing. They did not get the same in-depth treatment as Daphne-Simon and Kate-Anthony received. Plus there was too much of Benedict catting around and too many three-somes. Colin seemed like he had an exorcism head: one time pointing in the right direction and then pointing in the wrong direction. Plus, too many story lines which were too rushed. I wish the old showrunner would return.

There was no growth, no ‘earning’ Penelope’s love. Season 3 completely coasted on the fact that Penelope was ALREADY in love with Colin so no one else was really going to be given a fair shot. Even Penelope’s growth felt more like a plot device that they completely ‘walked back’ in favor of the ‘cemented romance’ from the book. If I was only a show watcher I wouldn’t continue watching the series because I would have felt both utterly lost and cheated.

I feel like he could've been saved if we got his POV more. The past two seasons have only shown Pen's POV and whilst I appreciate having Pen having her confidence moment, Colin felt like a trophy for her. Also, in regards to Pen being pregnant around the same time as her sisters could've been a great comedic scene (since they had been doing the deed even before they were married)

Even pen can’t seem to land on it bc she mentioned to el that even though she met Colin first, el was her girl. Which is expected because friendships between young unmarried girls and boys would be a bit cautionary and they’d have more surveillance on them or expected to have a chaperone always.
Pen said it started out more as a silly one sided girlish infatuation and slowly grew into a solid friendship. Cool. Wish I saw that beginning. I already let the writers have a pass telling me about this first meeting vs showing.
It’s not like I don’t buy them being friends now, though. But Like…care to share an anecdote of them as young teens that could help me see the vision lol? Them first meeting is kind of the tip of the iceberg.
Did their families go to fairs together? Did they play together? Did they celebrate birthdays and christmas? Was there crush worthy moment for either of them that they couldn’t articulate because they were so young? Did they practice dancing together? Did they ever confide in some hardships with each other?
Did he ever circle back to her after her father died? Did he know the extent of her neglect in her home and by the ton? Did they totally remove that plot beat ❗️spoiler of Edmund taking a horsewhip to Colin’s back as a child bc he hit Eloise? which could’ve helped explained why he’s such an emotional child or is desperate to people please? Bc a moment like that can make a child more insecure and feel ambivalent about losing his father so young. Do we even care?

THIS!! I never saw them really as "best friends", they just had like casual conversations, but there was no real friendship. That's why on the book it makes sense for Colin to finally fall for Pen after more than ten years of knowing her, the show couldn't care less on that detail, and to make everything worse....they keep mentioning MARINA.....Colin is still somehow linked to Marina, like......get over it please!!

  • @NoranAzmy

03:30 "Where is that societal pressure coming from?"
04:45 "Yes, you feel insecure about your writing, but why?"
I feel like people haven't been paying enough attention to Colin the past two seasons and maybe this is the problem. Colin is constantly teased and sometimes even belittled by his family and others, specifically for his virginity, his naivety/excitability, and his sensitivity. Sammy Bates and other TH-camrs go into depth about this but it's very clear to anyone who's been interested enough in Colin to pay attention to those scenes.
Anthony calls him "green" in S1 in a very impactful scene. Marina takes advantage of his innocence and then proceeds to berate him for it in S2, calling him "a boy". There are the endless jabs by Eloise and the rest of his family about how he won't shut up about his travels. His insecurity is clear in his visit to Marina when we makes a self-deprecating comment about how boring his travel stories must be.
I'd actually say these two specific points are the two most fledged out aspects of Colin's character and what makes him one of the best written characters on the show.
It's the relationship arc that didn't get enough time. And not because his love for Penelope doesn't make sense, or because they don't have enough chemistry. It's because we weren't given enough time to see it breathe on screen and enjoy it.

    • @mkg2124

This! It makes perfect sense that Colin would be insecure about his writing and feel like nobody would read it because nobody in his family was interested in it. And the insecurity became even bigger when he found out his wife writes something that EVERYONE wants to read. You can hear the envy and pain when he talks about how people pay to read about themselves in Whistledown.

    • @erykaton170
      @erykaton170 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

I completely agree. The Polin story arc was rushed this season, almost like they didn't want to rely on these two actors to carry it. They just fast forwarded through the most significant, and interesting, challenges for this couple, or just ignored them outright.
I think there are several critical scenes missing.
      1. Colin's love and desire overcoming his pain and anger, even if it is short lived initially. His reaction to Pen forcefully vocalizing her love, needed to be more than a quick kiss and groping in the street, it needed to be a full on inferno love scene. Something that shows him that there is a path beyond his current feelings and that he won't be miserable in this marriage. Even if it doesn't change anything immediately, and he is still conflicted in his feelings the next morning, it gives him another taste of what he has with Pen, and that there can be a future beyond the LW shock.
      2. We should have seen Colin (or maybe Pen and Colin) talking to his family about Pen being Whistledown, specifically Violet and Anthony, with Eloise chiming in about her process to forgiving Pen. Pen nearly destroyed them, more than once, even though she also tried to save Colin and Eloise. We could have seen all of them working through this. It would have shown emotional progress, and Colin finding his own way, and instead they just fast forward 9 months and everything is hunky dory.
      3. We needed a full Polin love scene after the LW public reveal at the ball. Colin pouring out his love, devotion and happiness, and Pen fully confident in her self, her power, and knowing that Colin really does love her, warts and all.
      4. It also needed a private conversation, not in the middle of a ballroom, or the street, or in front of one of their family, to chart their way forward. Advising each other, collaborating on each other's writing, sharing that their playful friendship is still there, but it's deeper now, more fulfilling.
It's a shame that they short changed us and put in pointless filler, and sacrificed the emotional narrative.

True - and he also points out that people didn't write to him or reply when he was travelling either. He didn't know he'd hurt Pen at that point, and must not have felt very significant to her or the others in his life, which would have made me insecure at least.

I do love this couple and thanks to them I started watching the show. I'm not into over the top romances. Those days are long gone. However, I saw something different in them and believe it or not, their relationship has a very friend to lovers trope when it comes to how fast everything went. That being said, I agree with you on his character arc. They did a huge disservice on a character that in my POV was kind and caring, which is never truly portrayed in romances. We like Darcy more than Bingley. We like the broody much more than the caring one. This was a great opportunity to emphasize a good heartrd character. He is Daphne's favorite, one of Violet's most sensitive children, and paid attention to Penelope when no one else did. Yet, none of the audience got that from him. Everyone thinks of him as privileged and unsupportive of Penelope, why? Because they didnt reveal his inner feelings and thoughts. No flashback and no dialogue.

Also, tell her that her job is not to create her personal interpretation of the book series and characters (we fans obviously don’t like her ideas), but to bring the Bridgerton series to “life” and to continue the formula which has worked for the last two seasons and a highly successful spinoff. It was so evident, especially with Colin this season, that Ms. Brownell lost the voice of the characters and totally disregarded, whether intentionally or ignorantly, the Bridgerton world that we all wholeheartedly embraced. I think it’s just sad that Shonda Rhimes or anyone else on the production team green-lit the airing of this disappointing and underwhelming Season 3. It was a waste of talented actors and the beloved characters they brought to life in past seasons.

I am so angry how they ruined Fran and John’s storyline. This show is so obsessed with sexual tension being love so it was nice to see them actually trying something different with these two. Actually having a relationship and connection based on the heart rather than just based on the countdown of when they’re going to get in bed. It was a nice asexual storyline and they were really adorable. And THEN they just take all of it back out of NOWHERE. It’s like unless they can sexualize it, it’s not love in the writers’ minds.

Anthony asks him whether he needs to "wet his d" because of his proposal to Marina and basically says his naivety stems from not going out like other men do.
Marina tells him off in season 2 and says he needs to grow up (like other people his age do).

I honestly don't see what anyone is complaining about. I think perhaps because Colin is one of the most cerebral characters on the show, he is constantly looking inward and self-reflecting, which Luke Newton portrays will subtle nuances. This type of on-screen portrayal usually gets overlooked for more bombastic personalities like Anthony or Benedict. I however, always found Colin to be the most intriguing. Luke Newton's microexpressions and body language really made me pay attention to him more....especially in group scenes with family, he is often overlooked but his face says so much....like hurt, concern, insecurity, jealousy, etc. I do agree that we deserved to jave more Colin and Pen screen time, but I think Colin's arc was there from S1Ep.1....so maybe those who never paid attention to the characters unless they were the leads didn't realize that and felt his story was rushed. To me, Colin is the least toxic, totally sensitive and sweetest Bridgerton. Also his love story with Pen felt the most natural and realistic...if you didn't see the chemistry between him and Nicola from Day 1 then perhaps you don't understand a friends to lovers story arc. This trope is one where the love grows, and that passion is usually ignited by a simple spark...like a kiss. I've had these relationships in my life...went 15 years without realizing a best male friend of mine was in love with me and I him, until a random Christmas party where we kissed under mistletoe for 10 seconds ..... that ignited something in me and made me realize I was always in love with this guy and didn't understand that my feelings were ones of love, not just friendship. So I don't know why people are all on the Colin hate train, maybe it's just the friends to lovers arc that people don't get, or the fact that Colin is not a typical romantic lead because he's a bit of an awkward dork but to me he is my absolute favorite so far. Season 3 has been the best season of the show to me thus far!

      T H I S ! 100%
Colin has been my fav Bridgerton since s1. My attention was naturally drawn to him because Luke Newton is such a talented actor. His acting is not full of unnecessary exaggeration, instead there is beautiful subtlety in the way he uses his voice as a tool in certain scenes, his facial expression and gestures on point as well.
To me Colin seems real, very human and therefore intriguing. His struggles are mostly internal, but so relatable that I couldn't help but root for him. And I couldn't force myself to do the same for Anthony or Simon just because they had daddy issues and were too stubborn to reflect on their toxic behaviour only for 'love' (or should I say lust) to suddenly fix their issues in the most dramatic way possible.
Colin&Pen's love story was the only one I found believable 'cause their special connection was already established in s1&s2. The one thing missing was his realisation that this connection was much more than friendship. Their struggles as a couple felt the most realistic imo. They both needed to grow up and own their mistakes so they could become better version of themselves. And they both needed each other to be able to do that. Them not acting perfectly mature, still not having everything figured out, only makes it more realistic as they are very young (she's 19, he's 22).
Idk why people struggle to understand it. My best friend had almost identical situation to yours - a single kiss changed her perception of her relationship with the guy she's been friends with for years - and now she has the healthiest romantic relationship I've ever seen. It is absolutely possible to start as just friends and fall in love much later ❤

Honestly, the thing that annoyed me the most about Colin was when he had his mouth opened while "making out" with women... Just something about his mouth looked weird this season...

I feel like this was Pen’s self-love story. I adored the female empowerment trope. Lead males can be the companion character.

Part of me thinks that the reason that they rushed the end with the baby to also show the other sister’s with their babies to show that the featheringtons are more United now and in a better place with pen to tie up their stories at least for now? I haven’t read the books but I don’t know how much more importance they have to the plot outside of pen. So it was also probably a way to put a bow on the featheringtons story in a quick and easy way instead of dragging the subplot out into a subsequent season in an already subplot heavy show (considering the next season is probably Benedict and the featheringtons screen time will probably go to Sophie’s step family instead)

Yes, I heard two people from the Featheringtons are not returning. So that might have pushed them to rush.

What personality? Colin has barely mattered to Bridgerton since the the beginning of the show. So when it was time for him to actually have his season, the show was desperately trying to play catch up with development and his arc when he’s never had either of them. Colin has never mattered to the writers and somehow has been more of an afterthought than Benedict. Which is saying A LOT given how little Benedict gets in this show.

His actual struggles have been shown subtlety in prior seasons he's been insecure looking for himself and it plays into why pen being whistle down upsets him his character isn't meant to be the bell of the ball Pen is I really wish they showed him being supportive of her like he was in the books.

Agreed on how Colin's character changed to fit society. I honestly didn't get it until the Lady Whistledown paper and I wish they had showed this pressure/struggle more. I was watching another reviewer who mentioned this may have not been obvious to the viewers who didn't watch all the interviews and press around the upcoming season because his actor talked about it a lot.

He was perfect in s1. They should have pandered to gen z and keep him sweet. But ni the Brainless writers assumed his fans like the fking manosphere. Ugh good thing he isn't my favorite. Anthony who was originally the most toxic is now thw most dreamy and female gaze love interest on the show 🥰

Exactly!! What about a flashback scene with Colin & his father, Edmund, that we got for Anthony?! And, yes, I know that Colin necessarily wasn't "there" for the "bee incident", but about another scene between them?! Maybe taking about what it is to "be a man" in those times . . . Ya know, a father-son talk . . . And maybe another flashback scene with Colin & Pen as kids, too . . Ya know, the MAIN couple of the season!! For Simon, we got MORE than one flashback scene to further explain HIS childhood . . . But, for Colin, we got NOTHING!!! 😒

I think the showrunners should´ve sticked with the original order of the books and therefore Benedict being the lead of season 3 and Colin & Penelope being the leads of season 4. We NEEDED another season for actual Polin development. Development & Preparation for Polin as a "couple", Development & Preparation for Colin alone as an individual and for Penelope alone as an individual, especially for her as Lady Whistledown. Penelope needed to realise earlier that Whistledown does more harm than good (in season 3 with Benedict as the lead) and working on it

With respect, Colin wasn’t “constantly having threesomes.” There were two: the first when he was still trying to be (as he tells Pen in the carriage) “what society expected him to be” (a bit of a gigolo, like the noxious threesome who invite him to pursue “revelry”); and the second after he has started to realize his feelings for Pen and the unhappiness his fake-rake persona is causing him, in which he chooses NOT to participate in the threesome, because (as he told the three actual rakes), he finds sex without love to be “lonely.”
I completely agree that the apparent obligation to introduce so many new characters and set up their storylines in this season took away from the time we Polin fans wanted to spend with the couple. They, and the wonderful actors who portray them, were given rather short shrift. There were some genuinely terrific moments, we just deserved more. I’d love to better understand WHY so much had to be shoehorned into this season and whether the run-times of each episode (which do vary a bit) couldn’t have been played with a bit more so that the editing didn’t feel so abrupt and choppy. Even a few extra minutes could have been helpful in reducing the rushed feeling the season had overall.
Love your commentary and congratulations on passing the 10k mark! You so deserve the viewership!

Sorry, one more remark and then I’ll shut up. While the second sex scene between Colin and Pen in part two was sadly too brief (IMO; perhaps I am a deviant), didja all notice that in contrast to her complete naïveté in their first encounter, Pen is now on top, controlling the inter. . . action. That suggests some definite growth in Pen herself and in the Polin relationship. Too short a scene but one that says, I think, rather a lot. Again, ITA that there should have MORE time spent exploring these changes within the two lovers as they find each other.

I enjoyed bridgerton 3 but after watching it the first thing that came to my mind was Justice for Penelope, I have never had second male lead syndrome but I think she would have had more chemistry with Lord debling, Colin did not seem that interested, I have seen TH-cam edits trying desperately trying to convince me and themselves that Colin was into Penelope but it didn't work.

Absolutely! They never give us the why! We have to search for the crumbs for Colin and it's so unfair. He had ao much potential and they dropped the ball.
I do appreciate Sammy Bates Colin Bridgeton's character analysis (definitely check it out on TH-cam) but it is truly fans reaching. The writers really dropped the ball on Colin and the Polin scenes.
The friendship to lover trope is tricky and the show did a terrible job with it. 😢 Love your thoughts.

Colin was shortchanged in Season 3. As much as I loved and got teary-eyed at some of the scenes shown from Pen’s POV, I expected the same treatment for Colin’s POV. As much as I love Pen, Colin should be the star of the season (or at least have equal importance). The book series is called “Bridgertons” after all.
They should have renamed Bridgerton Season 3 to Featheringtons Season 2 🤣😢

I feel like the lack of personality is meant to be intentional it’s just executed poorly. Colin is the third boy in an already huge family, his level of importance isn’t apparent within his family (other than his closeness to Daphne which the show doesn’t show much either) and does he yearns for something anything to identify himself with. He has been raised to be a respectful gentleman but beyond that what does he have? He isn’t an artist like Francesca, Daphne or Benedict. He’s not the leader of the household like Anthony And he isn’t an adventurous spirit like Eloise he’s just there and this could’ve been explored so much more with him feeling in adequate and his family similar to how Penelope feels inadequate and her family all of his adventures and going off to make something himself is him looking for a purpose but other than sending him off screen they don’t do anything with it, so any growth that Colin is a character could have doesn’t go anywhere.

Colin got the typical “nice guy” - glow up storyline. Typical nice guy that wants to settle down but is unfortunate in love and cannot find a partner. So he becomes a f*ckboy (sry rake) because they get all the female attention. But when he finds someone who wants to be with him monogamously he quickly converts because he wasn’t being himself to begin with. This usually ends up being the best friend the main person completely overlooked 🙄
