I was in a huge reading slump for, like, years. In spring 2019 I stumbled upon booktube and gradually was inspired to read again. I made a goodreads goal in November for 20 books till the end of the year, and I read 27. Looking forward to 2020!!

I’ve had the same experience! I’ve been in a reading slump for about 3 years now and it’s been torture haha. This last year getting back into reading however I only read 8 books which has been disappointing for me seeing how much I used to read. This year I’m shooting for 30!

Stat nerds unite and share a pie chart! ✅ My stats were unsurprising:
- 55-45 adult vs YA.
- 50% fantasy and the rest bits of everything.
- 65 vs 35 Female vs Male authors.
- 37 total books (with a goal of 30 and I didn't feel challenged at all sadly).
- average book length was 501 pages and average rating 3.5 stars.
Here's hoping for a better TBR next year (Stormlight, I am ready for you!) Goal: 40 for 2020 🙆🏼♀️

Genre and release year. My goal was actually opposite of yours I wanted to read mostly backlist which I think I succeeded in. I'm hoping to get back to a good balance of the two this year

I just wanted to say that you did so much effort this year on your booktube channel even though you had a rough year with the surgery and the moving, you still uploaded so many amazing videos so that's really cool you should be proud of yourself!!

My "problem" with audiobooks is that people keeps on saying that it's easy and Quick/convenient.
... No, it takes much more time! X)
It does.
I used to think they took longer, until I discovered I could change the speed. I usually listen to books at 1.25x or 1.5x, or an even higher speed depending on the book. My ears genuinely prefer it and it's closer to my own reading pace. It also allows me to read when I otherwise wouldn't be able to (ie. driving, running, cleaning, walking, etc). There are days I never have the opportunity to sit down to read and audiobooks are the only way I'm able to get any reading in
How do you stay focused while listening to audiobooks? That's my problem, I retain like 60% less information than while reading "reading" a book
It also depends on the reader. I can listen to audio books on 2x speed, and listen while I'm cleaning the house. Therefore I can finish a book (or more if I had a day off and wanted to listen all day, and they were shorter audio books) in a day. I dont have enough time in a day to finish a physical book most times. Although there are people who can finish books in like 3hrs, which I cannot, and those people may not think audio books are faster or convenient to have.
@@berenicethegirl I think (at least for me) it comes down to practice, the more I listen to audiobooks the easier it is for me to retain the information. I'm very much a visual learner so when it comes to learning I really need to see things written down - which is also why I can't listen to non-fiction. But I got really used to listening to novels, starting with the HP books on repeat and I've continued to do so so often that's it's almost second nature for me to listen to books while doing another, albeit mindless, activity. I still sometimes space-out and miss things but it's relatively rare.
If you'd like to listen to more books but struggle with it I'd suggesting picking up audiobooks that are re-reads or sequels so you're already familiar with story, characters, and writing that it's easier to jump in and follow along.
Of course, you may have already done so and still not like audiobooks xD

I was a voracious reader as a teen, but in the two decades since I've lost it. I've always wanted to get back in to it, but never was able to find a book that kept me hooked. Or I just didn't make it a priority to. Either way, I got Skyward from my library since you raved about it and I thought I'd give it a go. In 5 days, I am halfway through. As someone who finished about 5 books in the last decade, this is huge for me. Thank you for all of yiur videos, I look forward to finishing Skyward and diving in to reading again! 😊💕
I haven’t been reading the same sci-fi books as you, but I still think you’ve inspired me to pick up more sci-fi than usual this year. Will likely continue into 2020 now that I’m on a Star Wars book kick
My stats are way out of whack this year because I binge-read the entire Animorphs series... There's like 50+ books so they were half of my stats! One interesting stat that I kept track of was how much money I would have spent if I had purchased the books rather than get them from the library-by the end of the year, I would have spent 530 USD, not including the Animorphs. Thanks, library!
I burn through 3-5 audiobooks a week (a week!), 1 read book a month. I used to think audiobooks were terrible until I could make them faster and it helps quelle my road rage while driving and tune out my coworkers. LOVE my libraries for Overdrive/Libby because I can not afford this book habit otherwise. Highly recommend following good narrators, found so many great books outside my “comfort zone”.

This is always one of my favourite videos of yours! One of my goals for next year is to be less "gentle" as you say, and round down with ratings on Goodreads instead of rounding up....I feel bad giving 2 or 3 stars but I should just bite the bullet and do it!

What I usually do in order to not feel like I can just read super short books all the time and say I read a lot, is to set my goal of pages for the year instead of number of books :) At the end of every year when I look at my goodreads stats I always check he number of pages to see if I read more than last year or not :)
Oh my I totally forgot to include it in here! I did film a video comparing my years though and I tend to read 40,000 pages no matter what the number of read books is lol

I had a goal of 20, and I did "cheat" by adding 2 of my school books. But this was my year full of comics. I read a few, and also first felt like they didn't really count (or at least, 1 issue didn't count as one) but then I thought: hey, just cuz I don't have time to read the regular 300-400 pages throughout the year, I did read those comics, enjoyed them and relaxed when reading them. So .. it counts.
And I did put Priory of the Orange Tree as finished on the 31st instead of the 2nd (when I actually finished) but hey, I read like 700 of the 800 pages in 2019.
So that did prop up my average page number this year 😅

You should check out the TomeTopple Readathon that was created by Sam from ThoughtsOnTomes. It is usually a 2 week readathon that is focused on reading big books. There are different challenges and reading sprints to help you along the way. It may help you with your big book challenge. I believe they usually host 2-3 readathons through out the year.
I always really enjoy your stats and whenever I watch those videos, I think "oh, I want to do that, too" but then I remember how much effort it is, even throughout the year!
It's surprisingly not too bad unless I don't do it after each book/month lol
Starting this year instead of number of books I want to read I’m doing a page goal. I feel like it’ll just be way more accurate and takes some pressure off.

I agree with the sci fi! I love the genre but idk why I have such a struggle finding out specifically about new releases that are sci fi everyone wants to talk about the classics on youtube which no offense i dont really care about lol would love a most anticipated sci fi releases video

Ugh love stats! Btw how expensive can a library card be? It's brutally cheap where I live like less than 10 bucks for a year. And it's a big library.
The one from my city is free but the one from the closed by city is 80$ a year.... which is why I make sure to use it a lot lol

I've always had a great memory but I'm sure a forget some details. If I feel it's been too long in between books I'll look up a summary online!

It never occurred to me that audiobooks wouldn't be considered the same as "reading" by some people until discovering booktube. I've always listened to a lot of audiobooks and always considered those books as "read" even though I technically listened to them. I'm therefore always surprised when I hear booktubers mention it as I guess you and others get a lot of negative comments about listening v. reading. Still, the only time I've actually heard someone say they don't consider audiobooks as 'reading' was a booktuber years ago who really just sounded like she was against them because she didn't like them and was bitter that other booktubers were able to read so much more than she due to audiobooks
I get so many comments against audiobooks. Especially on Goodreads on popular books I disliked (like Dune) lol

I watched your surgery video, I have all of the same symptoms you had before surgery. I was wondering how to get started with a diagnosis? Do I got to my orthodontist or to my doctor? I fear if I just say “I can’t breathe through my nose” they’ll brush it off or not even consider possible jaw issues.
Your ortho is probably your best bet or see a maxillo-facial surgeon who’s the one who would do a surgery if you need one!
For author gender, you have a slot for both. Is that for if 2+ authors? Or if the author is genderqueer? Or what?
The spreadsheet had been done by someone else a few years ago but I believe it was if there was more than one author. I adapt it when needed so if I had read a book but an author that was NB I would have added it!
I’m curious how much the second library card charges. I haven’t heard of that. Here in NZ my library charges to place holds, which is so annoying!
It was 50 in 2017 but since it’s been 80 a year :/
I can't imagine being charged to place a hold on a book! At that point I would probably be more inclined to just buy the book myself 😂
Just checked and that library also charges for holds. I only use it for the apps for ebooks and audiobooks so I'm fine but I can't imagine myself paying for holds lol

I'm building my own stats spreadsheet for 2020 and I cant for the life of me figure out the formula that separates my reads into page ranges so frustrating
You gotta have a category to input the page count for every book , then tell it to add up all the numbers and display it in your output box.
