    Thanks, one of the better explanations I have seen to date. I'm new to all this, know little and realise that I need to 'mug up on the theoretical aspects of video making as well as the artistic elements and then do a lot of practicing if I'm ever to be as good as my ambition and aims want me to be. Hitherto I have shot a lot of stills over many years, but now buying an a7iv think it's high time I begin my 'convergence' journey.

      Hi Clint Gibbs, My pleasure. Depending on the what you are recording and if your subject will benefit from higher bit rate. The second thing to consider is your audience, how many would actually have a Video card able to render in 10 bits or Displays that are actually able to play that. In terms of 264 vs 265, it depends on your hardware and software tools you use for editing capabilities versus the storage media scale. Personally, I'm using a software for editing video which works alright with h264 4:2:0 only even with the latest version. Hope that answers your question.

    • @centrumphotography
      @centrumphotography  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Peter, Initially, Microsoft had the H265 codec drivers for free, now, they charge 0.99 for it. Microsoft store should provide these, if you want them from Microsoft. Others claim to provide the same, however, there's always a risk of installing an adware or even more a backdoor in your OS, if downloaded from an untrusted source. It's a whole other discussion if we get into the cybersecurity and OS app deployment or Security best practices. As of now, I'll just have to leave it here and allow everyone make their own judgements as which codecs to use and where to download them for.

      If still unresolved, get back to shooting in 8 Bits and it should resolve the issue. Very little people actually have monitors that can play/render 10Bits of colour deapth, thus, you need to have a display/monitor that can render the 10bits of colour deapth along with your GPU being able to process that to see the difference.

    Would it matter what codec I record in (xavc-si vs xavc-hs both 4K, 10 bit 422) if I am transcoding to prores or something similar in terms of quality after transcode ? Would it be better to use HS to save space and transcode to edit, if quality loss is minimal ?

    • @centrumphotography
      @centrumphotography  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Zubaid, I - stands for Intra frame. This codec records each of the frames of your video in its entirety. I vs Long GoP is all about the compression efficiency, i.e. shooting in an I format, is going to make it easier/faster or less costly for editing software to edit the recording in post processing. Since you are shooting both in 4k, the codec here makes a difference for you when removing or editing parts of the video, your app that you use for editing the software is going to work faster for the same resource power. There's not going to make any other difference in the playing quality, since if you have powerful Graphic video card or main CPU, you won't see any difference in the playing of the video. Having said that, if you record at 60 fps and play 4k at 60fps, if you filmed in I standard, it could potentially help your processor cope with the amount of information it needs to decode/rebuild to show you 60 frames within a sec each in 4k resolution. Now, there's a depedency also on the content of the frame, in the amount of how much static vs moving each frame is, i.e. how much different two consecutive frames are and then, your Long GoP compression algorithm will have better compression efficiency when the frames are most alike, while Intra compression has better response and flexibility when editing.
      Hope this has answered your qeuestion.

    if i want the clips to come out as mp4 files what setting is that on the camera?

    • @centrumphotography
      @centrumphotography  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, mp4 is a common “container format” for video files that allows you to store a lot of video and audio information in a smaller file size. However, though the file extension is mp4, the compression algorigthms are different and that's what I attempted to clarify with this video. Sony cameras (not just A7IV) do and save the files in mp4 format.

    Whenever I try to edit XAVC S my computer struggles while using Premiere. For some reason, XAVC HS allows for much smoother playback and I'm able to edit without the use of proxies. I don't understand how this is because I thought the new H 265 was more compressed

    • @centrumphotography
      @centrumphotography  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Dowblab, This requires more discussion or evena dedicated video. You are correct, H.265 has a better efficacy when it comes to compression therefore you require more processing power to access the data when decoding takes place. Now, the behaviour is different depending on the exact hardware configuration every machine is created and in particular the GPU (Graphic Video Card) and here's why. Any Video application uses one of the two APIs to render 3D graphics in: Direct 3D or OpenGL. In Windows OS, the default one is Direct3D which was designed to provide the acceleration (in our case the decoding) at hardware level, i.e. using the GPU (graphic card processor) which enables developers to have flexibility to allocate resources in a more efficient way for their applications. Now, these applications need to be able to decode H.265 at the time when I created this video, Camtasia is unable to work with H.265 on my PC running Win 10 as my GPU is Radeon RX Vega M GL Graphics with Intel i7 main board CPU. Even with H.264 when using 140M bit rate. It works from H.264 with 100M bit rate and lower though. What is the solution then for people whose mahcines do Not have hardware-based video H.265 decoder? Should the video app (let's say VLC or Video Editing app) be instructed to use OpenGL API rather than Direct3D, as OpenGL was designed to be a 3D redenring system that may be emulated in software which successfully addressed the shortcoming of a Processing architecture that was not optimised for Video processing, in other words, the video can be decoded using the main mother board CPU, the Intel i7 in my case rather the GPU (the video card dedicated CPU), which is how I play any H.265 videos encoded on my machine. There are many aspects to cover here as buffering, L2 cache memory of the CPU and so forth, but one take away is this: if your GPU supports H.265 (newer systems) all great, you do Not need to do anything. If not, you need to instruct your video app. to use OpenGL API rather than Direct3D as an workaround and continue to upgrade your Video drivers from the manufactor.
      Hope this helps!

    • @dowblab
      @dowblab 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@centrumphotography I really appreciate the thorough explanation. I'm relatively new to this level of video development but this definitely helped explain some things. I'm still a bit curious as to why my newer system (RTX 3080 which I believe is capable of H.265) has trouble with my H.264 files. Any video recorded in XAVC S 4:2:2 10bit has very choppy playback and is impossible to edit without proxies but XAVC HS is very smooth. I figured if the system is capable of the newer H.265 then it should have no problem with H.264

    • @centrumphotography
      @centrumphotography  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@dowblab Hi, unfortunately, I didn't use Premiere and do Not have it installed. I can guide you on Camtasia where you find the Video rendition settings for this app. Camtasia>Preferences>Advanced>Hardware Acceleration Here you can choose between GPU (recommended value by default - your hardware encoding/decoding) or software (using the emulated main mother board CPU - intel i7 in my case) or you can also use the hardware encoding, your video card GPU with Microsoft Basic Render driver or a secondary GPU/Video Card and see which ones of these give you better results. Now, I've tried 10 bits H.264 on latest Camtasia and it failed, it only worked on 8bits. Could it be that they will add support for this in future releases. As of now, I believe all you can do is wait - yes, I'm aware your Premiere works with H.265, but that does Not necessary mean it will work with H.264 10bits.

    • @centrumphotography
      @centrumphotography  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi PJ Maloney, can the video files be seen while the card is plugged in the camera? Some partitioning type files would Not allow files particular size (like FAT32 only allows 4G in size, therefore, the video, needs to be devided in multiple files). EX-FAT allows larger files to be saved in a single file. Now, also depending on the default settings within your OS, the extension file is not usually displayed and there's also the hidden attribute of a file. Unfortunately, I cannot tell which one is the case for you as there are many variables. Hope you find a solution and share with the community your findings. Sorry I cannot help more.

      Depending if you are filminging in NTSC or PAL you will get the 50 or 60 fps and that's to do with frequency for the electrical network - legacy thing - due to regional differences (NOAM/US vs Europe - PAL was developed in EUROPE, first in France and I've had the honour to meet one of the people who created first PAL colour studios in the world at that time retired while I graduated first Master at the Head professor who used to be his Professor assistant when she started her carreer).

      Hi John D. When you select XAVC-S your available Record Settings only allow you to choose up to 140M bit rate, while if you choose XAVC-SI you get a 250M bit rate and that with 4:2:2 10bits, while S allows 4:2:0 and 8bits. Since SI has a higher Bit rate than S, the SI provides higher quality.
      Hope this helps!

    • @johnd9357
      @johnd9357 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@centrumphotography I see. So really the s vs si isn’t actually the quality, it’s the compression codec - and depending on that codec you have quality options. And some codecs have options that are higher quality than others. Does all that sound right? I have been shooting stills for almost 2 decades but video is totally new to me, so I’m drinking through a firehose. Thank you for the knowledge check and please let me know if I’m understanding this correctly now?

    • @centrumphotography
      @centrumphotography  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@johnd9357 Hi John, that is correct. The sensor of the A7IV it is higher than the 4K (UltraHD 4 x times HD resolution definition), therefore, you could potentially get even better resolution than 4K. The challenge comes when you need to read the sensor really quick and than make sure that information you've been reading from the sensor is quickly saved in time to a storage device before you receive the huge amount of data from the sensor again (imagine 30 times a second - 30 fps), while at the same time you also need to encode that video (compress it) before saving it to your SD card. All the magistrals in the chain between sensor and your storage modules need to sustain that very high rates of information transfer. Different codecs used allow various levels of information saved to the storage as it is in stills with RAW, RAW compressed, JPEG and so forth formats, it is the same in video but with codecs. The resolution is the same - always 4K or HD but the codecs used are different between S, SI.
