    If you are using V30 SD CARDS because you are on a budget, to get 4:2:2 10-bit at 60fps you MUST use XAVC HS (even though it's harder to edit) because of the write speeds. BUT you DO have the option if you need it.
    4k 24 & 30 are fine to use the HAVC S codec
    You NEED v90 or CF Express for XAVC SI

    • @MattyDCCollins
      @MattyDCCollins  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The way I understand it is the SI video codec takes every individual frame as a high quality still and puts it together for a video. Other codecs skip a few frames and use ai to stitch together the missing frames so you would have a higher quality video with SI. More information taken with SI codec. Hope that helps my man and thanks for your support

    FYI, 8-bit vs 10-bit makes a BIG difference whereas 422 vs 420 is virtually the same as far as quality and editing color. 420 is much easier on your computer to edit. I shoot 420 10-bit exclusively.

    • @MattyDCCollins
      @MattyDCCollins  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can only get 600M 4:2:2 10 bit with the S-I codec and CF card - best you can do with XAVC S is 200M at 60fps with a v90 I even think v30 will work for that

  • @godssouljah
    @godssouljah 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hello! Great video! One thing I was confused about was does XAVC-HS take up less space on your sd card but is more taxing on your computer than XAVC-S which is less taxing on your computer but takes up more space on your sd card? Thanks!

    • @MattyDCCollins
      @MattyDCCollins  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Espirito, thanks for stopping by the channel! Yes HS taxes up less space because it is highly compressed, because of this it will be harder on your system to edit. S takes up more space but is easier to edit :) hope this helps

      @@MattyDCCollins thanks for replying and answering my question!

    • @godssouljah
      @godssouljah 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      So editing XAVC-HS is harder to edit due to it being compressed? Or do you mean it’s harder to edit due to one’s computer having to work harder? Sorry for the silly questions ! Just wondering cause I have the new Mac with M1 chip and wondering if that would be good enough for that format! Thanks!

    • @MattyDCCollins
      @MattyDCCollins  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@godssouljah No worries I'm here to help! Fist your New M1 depending on which one you got should handle HS without problems. Secondly, YES, heavily compressed files that take less sd card space need to be "unpacked" by your computer when you import so your computer is doing more work than if it is a RAW large file.

    hey ! if I shoot in the top codec on a7iv with a v90 128gb card, how much 4k footage can I expect to get in hours/ mins? is there a way to estimate ?

    • @MattyDCCollins
      @MattyDCCollins  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey TimBo, I'll give you an estimate based of the XAVC-S that I usually record with - 10 bit 4:2:2 4k 24fps is about 1gb of data per minute of video. SI might take a little more space but not a ton more so I would say with a 128gb card you should be able to conservatively record about 1 hour of footage.

      @timboh8776 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MattyDCCollins thank you ! It’s helpful. Lastly - I’m in the UK, PAL, I see that some H.265 options are not available, is there a work around this other than switching to NTSC? Sorry to be a pain! Thanks man!

  • @jeffhalebopp

    What? Where is the XAVC HS 4k 30p setting? Is Sony joking? WOW. That is a deal breaker for me. I have an intel i5-12500 cpu with built in UHD Graphics 770 that does hardware decoding in real time in Premiere's timeline for HEVC. So it has silky smooth HEVC timeline performance in real time. I have no need to shoot h.264 anymore and waste space. By using HEVC, over time this would pay for the camera instead of having to buy more hard drives. But I shoot at 30p. Deal breaker. I think Sony doesn't want to pay the h.265 license fee.

    • @MattyDCCollins
      @MattyDCCollins  ปีที่แล้ว

      Very interesting point Jeff, and something I just learned thanks for that. You're very right about the savings associated with storage and shooting in h.265. That sucks it's unable to. What's your work around? Which camera are you looking at now?

    • @jeffhalebopp
      @jeffhalebopp ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MattyDCCollins I guess my workaround so far is to hold off buying a sony camera at the moment. I need to do more camera looking. I don't think canon has a low bitrate 10bit hevc setting. But I would prefer a Sony camera. I still only have a Panasonic G7 and GX85. I got them years ago for the unlimited 4k no time limit. I guess the only workaround would be shooting 4k at a very high bitrate and trancoding later to a much lower hevc bitrate. But I don't like the idea of a 2nd generation copy :) Plus I would need a huge memory card. BTW, having that Intel onboard graphics is so amazing with the timeline performance in Premiere. It is fun watching the Intel CPU along with it's onboard GPU and the NVIDIA GTX 1060 all work together at the same time in Task Manager :) I wish I had this 12th gen CPU years ago. It would have save me thousands of hours. Thanks for the reply.
