    One other Paul thing to mention from the 2000s is his appearance and contributions at The Concert for George, leading: All Things Must Pass, For You Blue, and Something, and then playing piano and singing harmony on While My Guitar Gently Weeps and even Wah-Wah! The ukulele version of Something is a remarkable arrangement and it's one that Paul's band adopted and continued playing in that style even up to 2019 at every show in tribute to George. I think George's death had a huge impact on Paul in the early 2000s, and influenced "Friends to Go" on Chaos, and influenced certain decisions regarding The Beatles LOVE show and album.

      A friend of mine said that the whole Concert for George tightened up musically when Paul walked on the stage... Because with Ringo on drums, you had the rhythm section from The Beatles.

    Electric Arguments is so underrated! (We need a reissue, expanded edition for sure)....Phenomenal sonic explorations (Traveling Light and Is This Love?) on it along with some classic Macca moments (heavy rocker Nothing Too Much and wistful acoustic ditty Two Magpies). It's got it all. Had that record been labeled a McCartney album, and been given Egypt Station/McCartney III level promotion, it would have been a big success, probably #1, with "Sing the Changes" as a lead single and music video. This is a great overview, thanks for posting this video for us fans of Paul's "latter day" work.

    A couple of things I'd like McCartney to do would be a Rick Rubin record, a la Johnny Cash, and a selection of original piano pieces, preferably played by a classical pianist of some description. Something along the lines of 1995's A Leaf. It might be a nice way to round out his career, perhaps; a dignified farewell rather than a croaky, gutteral goodbye.

      I think McCartney 3 sounds fine singing wise, yes his voice isn't as strong as it used to be but he's not forcing it to do anything it's not capable of. I would love another album from him but McCartney 3 is a nice bow on his career if he stops here. It even ends with him on a farm.

    "Chaos & Creation in The Backyard" is not only my favorite McCartney album from the 21st Century era but my favorite McCartney album of all time. I still play it in almost all the formats I have it on(vinyl, CD & digital on my IPods and IPad). I also love "Egypt Station", that was a needed kick in the ass for Paul & his fans after "Memory Almost Full"(which I couldn't get into) and "Kisses From The Bottom"(which I did enjoy but I usually play that album when I'm in a relaxing mood). Hated "Driving Rain", enough said. "McCartney3" is good, still play it from time to time. Love "Long Tailed Winter Bird", "Women & Wives", "Deep Deep Feeling" & "When Winter Comes" are my favorite tracks. "Deep Down" is a fine track but I imagine a R&B artists like Al Green doing it with Willie Hutch doing the production would had been a killer version.

    I’ve not given Macca’s albums since Flowers In The Dirt much attention but McCartney 3 has renewed my interest. This was a really interesting run through. Electric Arguments is now top of my must-buy list. Thanks for the insights.

      If youre still looking to investigate the albums from the 21st century, I would go to Chaos & Creation, Memory Almost Full and New before delving into Electric Arguments. EA is a decent album but tails off dramatically in the second half of the album.

    Thanks for an honest assessment of McCartney 3.Some of the early press reviews were way over the top.Its an average Macca album whatever format you buy it in. The idea of a Macca solo accoustic album , well produced along the lines of Jenny Wren , would be something truly special.

    Strange that NEW was the album that got me back into Paul, I think its great and so do most of my McCartney loving mates. Great commercial songs well sung and pleasing to the ear.

    • @ursula3438
      @ursula3438 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      "New" is great, if you can get past the state of his voice. It also sounds a bit overly compressed to me, though I'm no expert in that field. But I think the songwriting is strong and I like the concept of using 4 different producer, stylistic diversity is always good in my book. I also recommend to everyone who's interested to purchase the deluxe version, the hidden track "scared" is a personal favourite. I think Macca made a big mistake excluding this gorgeous ballad from the regular version.

    I love your takes on all these albums. From someone born in 1962 who was mostly influenced by my and my friend's older brothers and sisters, I find your opinions so much more valuable and more in depth compared to younger reviewers. Whereas I love many younger reviewers (young as in my age or younger, hah), your reviews just hold so much more weight with me. Thanks so much.

    Perhaps it’s a product of me having been young when Driving Rain came out, but even after consistent revisiting years later, I don’t understand the vitriol that so many fans seem to have for it. Sure, there are some clunkers - “Freedom” is what it is, “Spinning on an Axis” is pretty bad - but there’s a fair amount of solid material in my book. Everyone would LOVE “Riding Into Jaipur” if it were on Electric Arguments, but because it’s on this album, it gets undeserved criticism; “Your Loving Flame” is a stunning vocal and great production; “She’s Given Up Talking” has a fascinating soundscape; “Your Way” is as good as any of his post-“Heart of the Country” Americana exercises...I think there are at least 4-5 other solid songs as well. I’m not here to pound the drum for it as a top 5 Macca record or anything, and it certainly could have used a bit of editing, but I can name a handful of records I think it’s *easily* better than.
    Of course, it’s all subjective! All due respect to anyone who takes the time to actually think critically and form their own opinions. Love the channel, Norman, thanks for all the quality content.

      I agree Dylan it's not as bad as some make out but because the other albums after are stronger it gets left behind. I think From A Lover To A Friend and Tiny Bubble are my picks from it the rest is just okay, but I agree some pruning would've helped it. Freedom being added was a bad idea and Rinse The Raindrops length doesn't help the album either.

    • @dylanseveymusic
      @dylanseveymusic 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@jamesboyce4000 I also think “From a Lover to a Friend” is fantastic, which is ironic because I feel that one in particular gets singled out for being an issue somehow. I understand what you’re saying, though, especially given that Chaos came afterwards. Again, as long as people take the time to efficiently understand and explain how they feel, to each their own.

    • @jamesboyce4000
      @jamesboyce4000 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@dylanseveymusic Problem with the internet is plenty of people don't take time to explain what they dislike or like about something. The other pet peeve of mine is when it comes to music is people's "I listened to it once and it's crap" and that's their only explanation on why they don't like something. I don't expect a full-blown review from most but a bit more exposition would give their view a bit more credence. As you say "each to their own" but I don't really get how you can listen to a piece of music once and then that becomes your definitive opinion on it.

    Hey Mazzy, I enjoyed this one a lot, great discussion on albums I know next to nothing about, apart from Egypt Station which I have and agree is a slow, slowwwww burner. Only other Macca albums I've got are McCartney 1 & 2, Ram, and Flaming Pie. I absolutely love Ram and FP is very good imo. Speaking as someone who was in UK high school in early 80s, Macca just wasn't hip in the least for kids my age is how I remember it. I paused and checked Electric Arguments in Discogs, out of my $range/region for now it seems. Cheers!I

    Totally agree that McCartney throws too much production at his songs nowadays. I guess it must spring from insecurity. In his book Revolution in the Head, Ian McDonald has an interesting theory about the Beatles' (and McCartney's) increasing tendency to avoid self-editing from the late sixties onwards.

    Disagree big time about New. It has a great flow and has some really fun tunes on it. Egypt Station on the other hand suffers big time from bad sequencing and frankly some of his worst songs (Fuh You).
    Funnily enough though, those who disliked New really loved Egypt is seems!

    Very enjoyable discussion. Generally, I agree with your views but I think McCartney III, despite being only 2 weeks old is as enjoyable as Egypt Station but unlike that record, I think there are no duds like Fuh You and People Want Peace to drag it down a little. I was underwhelmed by McCartney III after the first few listens but after 7 or 8 listens I really took to it. NEW apart from Driving Rain is the one I rarely listen to now, some good songs but the multiple producers just make it a mess to listen to and it's overlong. Chaos and Memory are strong and Electric Arguments is a brave album, though I think it starts to lose its way at the back end but I'm fine with even failed experiments.

    Ian Paice (Deep Purple) was on drums at that Cavern gig too. I don't hate Driving Rain but "Freedom" blows. "From a Lover to a Friend" might be the second worst (I'm talking ever). Heather Mills was a poor substitute for Linda as a muse. Happy New Year Guys 🍾🥂. The New Year starts for me January 20th.

    On McCartney III, I'd rank "Deep Deep Feeling" and "The Kiss of Venus" as masterworks worthy of any of his solo albums. DDF could have even been on Abbey Road, I liken it to John's "I Want You (She's So Heavy)", a long meditation on repetive words and feelings from different sonic angles, and the backwards vocals and harmonies are really cool...And TKOV is straight from the White Album songbook, and I think it's better than a handful of songs on the White Album, actually. Other than those two, "Long Tailed Winter Bird," "Seize the Day", "Slidin'" and "Find My Way" are all very solid late-Macca tracks. Particularly the opener since it's something new from Paul which is startling because he's almost 80 and still giving us fresh sounds. The rest is OK, not great, but listenable and it's just nice to have Paul back and continuing to chase his muse while giving us a few new gems in the process.

    Interesting opinions of the latter day McCartney albums that are largely disregarded . I accept that music is off course subjective but I think your love for Electric Arguments is very overstated. Its a good album, that starts well but tails off dramatically during the second half of the record. Because this album is created in a more 'off the bat' way, it's difficult to compare against the regular albums as there is no writing process involved. For me, EA is a reasonably solid al bum but it wouldn't get anywhere near Chaos, Memory, New or Egypt Station in my ranking of these albums, but thanks for covering this period as not many do (unless their taking them out of a box to show what they've just ordered from Amazon).

    Ha ha!! LA LA LADYYYY!
    I absolutely agree with you about “Freedom”, Mazzy. Not only the worst McCartney song ever, but probably one of the 10 worst songs by ANY artist, ever. It’s right on up there with Starship’s “We Built This City”. Puke. 🤮. I remember him saying in an interview how he was on the tarmac in a jet when he heard about the towers falling, and he wrote the song in 15 minutes. And I remember thinking, “hmm ... that’s why you might want to spend another hour on that one, it just sucks!” With all due respect, of course. And, hey: some great songs have been written in 15 minutes. But “Freedom” is NOT one of them. Phooey.

    Nice video Mazzy! Paul in the 2000's I don't think has reinvented himself, but, he definitely has been in somewhat of a renaissance. Lots of high quality work. I just wish for his age and maturity that maybe he'd write some more profound, or, less silly lyrics for some of his work. Still, I think this renaissance could maybe be attributed to the fact that he has a bit more freedom with Linda gone, his kids were grown up, and, he was out touring a lot. Unfortunately, his constant touring has taken it's toll on his voice. I think Driving Run could have been much better had it been trimmed down to maybe 10 songs. Too long of an album. To me, it's Paul's Plastic Ono Band. Very raw where Paul was still dealing with the passing of Linda, yet, allowing himself to move on to a new love(even if for a short time). I do like the remix of "From A Lover...." by David Kahn. Give that a listen. "Freedom" is god awful. I mean BAD! Paul trying soooo hard to write a great anthem. In the documentary about the 9/11 concert Paul put on where he is showing the tune to Eric Clapton and I think Pete Townshend is embarrassing. They're looking at Paul with these WTF??? looks on their faces. lol. Chaos and Creation is a great intimate, quiet album. Love it when he just does acoustic stuff. I don't think there is a weak track on it. Electric Arguments, unfortunately, gets overlooked. . Lots of good stuff, Sing the changes, Dance till we're high, etc. His other Fireman stuff is great, especially the Rushes album. WINGSPAN is a joke. Sorry, it is. It should have been strictly about Wings. This really could have explored how good Wings was as a band. Should have had all of the hits by Wings, deep album tracks, unreleased songs or rare b-sides, and live stuff. Instead it was an odd mix of solo hits and Wings hits and odd deep tracks. A ripoff. Memory Almost Full, decent. Love the loose thread of the idea of time, passage of time, etc running thru the album. "Dance Tonight", "End of the End". NEW and Egypt Station both have a good fresh sound to them but I do think they suffer somewhat from different producers working on one album. Macca III, is a pretty decent album. It's still growing on me. "Find my way", "Pretty Boys", "When winter comes", "Winter Bird" are my favorites so far. Again, love the acoustic work. "Slide" is starting to grown on me.

    It’s obviously a matter of personal opinion, but I disagree with almost everything you guys say about these albums. Except maybe Egypt station and amoeba gig. A few mentions:
    Driving rain has grown on me and I think it’s not great but underrated.
    I don’t like chaos other than a few songs
    I’m one of the people who loves new.
    Also Paul has said repeated warnings was pre Trump and he was not thinking of him although he did agree it applied.

    I was and have been a " Beatles" fan since 64 but imho paul hasnt really done anyting good since the early 70s, i believe because of his beatle status people will say his music is good because of their beatle loyalty but without lennon to i nspire him like his beatle days he needs to hang it up because lyrically its garbage and hed way past his prime and i believe paul is afraid of his mortality and cant except that father time is not on his side and he seems to think somehow if he keeps putting out music he'll somehow stay alive and revelant!
