It's great to see John Lennon's 'Plastic Ono Band' coming up as his best solo album. 'Working Class Hero' is both his most cringeworthy and greatest song post-Beatles, an eviscerating song about the British class system, or simply about the British culture overall. "As soon as you're born, they make you feel small" and "But you're still fucking peasants as far as I can see." A brutally insightful class war song. "But first you must learn to smile as you kill."
Excellent video, gentlemen. Nothing more to add, keep talking about the Beatles, I thoroughly enjoy the bantering and the in-depth look at these records. And it makes me want to listen to them again, which is the most important thing, I guess. Thank you,
I was so excited to see the topic for this video. There's no right or wrong answer on these kinds of videos but it is fun to hear what other people think. I can't imagine anyone not loving All Things Must Pass. It is one of the best records of all time. I love Paul McCartney but I have never heard Driving Rain. Now I'm scared to. Lol.
Don't be scared Melinda. It's not great but it isn't bad. I agree with Mazzy's assessment of the song "Freedom" which was Paul's 9/11 song and was thrown on at the last minute. It must have taken Paul all of five minutes to write. If you find it, get it. It's hard to find.
I like ATMP but I don’t love it. There are some great tracks but I don’t like Spector’s (over)production and George never really rocks on it. I have a tough time getting through the whole thing (unlike the White album).
Dark Horse is my other favorite George solo record. It gets a lot of knocks because for one, people always bring up the 74 tour. In hindsight, what does that have to do with the record? I dig the way his voice sounds but maybe that’s just me. Anyways, loving this video guys but come on, do you mean to tell us that Dark Horse is worse than Gone Troppo! George treated that album as a contractual fulfillment record and a joke. You can tell that his heart was not into it and that he was was momentarily musically spent and needed a break hence the five year gap until Cloud Nine.
This was fun .. I hardly have any Beatles solo albums but mine were shown here I have that Lennon debut record. I have ram and I like flaming pie . I have one Harrison album dark horse and I like it .. 👍
This video was So. Much. Fun! My sleeper Paul title is Tug of War...always loved that LP. Sometime in NYC was John's worst even though half of it was with Zappa, Ringo's Y Not is completely forgettable, and who remembers Gone Troppo? Bueller...bueller.... Thanks to you and David for making such an entertaining video.
I love Pipes Of Peace, vivid memories of buying it on day of release, playing it all night long. When you're wrong, you're wrong, boys. It's superior too than it's sister album, Tug Of War. Great film though.
That was fun to watch! Out of all the McCartney albums - I agreed with you on of his worst - Drivin Rain and Pipes of Peace. Other than those two - I love almost all of Paul. My disagreement was on George's worst. I would say that Extra Texture was his record at the bottom. I love the song "You", but I cannot remember any other song standing out. I have not listened to it in many years - maybe I should play it again.
Good idea of a duel between two old friends. Funny to see you argument for each other choices. Friendly but no compromise exchange. I liked it and had fun with you both. Most of your choices are also mine. So I cannot say anything more. I wished you had more different choices but that’s how it goes. C’est la, c’est la, c’est la vie as I would say along with John and Harry. Hi from France!
Guys I love the Beatle Boys. Here’s a challenge. Remember the classic Beatles ballads album. Can you create a Paul, John and George solo albums Ballard album. 10 tracks from each artist. We can then create a playlist online and have a listen
I totally agree with RAM as the #1 McCartney record. You have to add that the music press in the US had it in for Paul in that period. "Flaming Pie" is of course a reference to John's dream. A very good pick. I would argue that the LPs have to be listed separately from the CDs. PIPES... yeah. Paul doesn't play "Freedom" after George W used it as his coda for invading Iraq. I like the song as an arena anthem. Is it believable for a multi-millionaire Pop Rock God? Who am I to say... George-All Things Must Pass, love the Wall of Sound too. And it never did pass. It is still the best. Probably the best of the solo records. Do like Cloud 9-have it as vinyl (for all the Masi fans). Dark Horse... yeah. The OTHER best solo record is RINGO. Ringo also had some really good singles before this album that deserve mention. The worst... there are more than one. Time Takes Time fits in that CD-era category. I like it too. However, there are some Ringo CDs that I just didn't pick up. But I have to disagree with "the Beatles not getting back together." Here are the two arguments to meet & beat: Abbey Road. That is what the Beatles did the 'first' time they got together. "All Things Must Pass" that is the quality of what George would have brought to a Beatles reunion. Since, I would assume, the space would be more evenly allocated. More like a White Album size project. Any time those guys wanted to get together, they would have made magic. Great show guys... Bonus Round? We should be showing pieces designed by Stella from the runway.Holly Days by Denny Laine in the mid-70s when McCartney acquired the Holly catalogue. Not family. But done off to the side.
Never liked John's first solo album despite the universal praise it gets. I prefer Walls and Bridges and Mind games. Band on the Run and Wings at the Speed of Sound from Paul because I grew up with those and Are sentimental to me. Dark Horse and Extra Texture from George for the same reasons. The Ringo Album and Rotogravure from Mr. Starr. Unpopular ? probably but those are my favorites. Great Video as usual Mazzy.
loved both of your lists....i know the best and the worst, but i also have some personal favorites (which could be another bacon and egg show)....i love john's 'walls and bridges'..i think 'whatever gets you thru the night' is one of his best solo efforts...and for ringo...'ringo's rotogravure' is certainly one i listen to often...as for george (you're gonna kill me on this one)...there's something about 'dark horse' i really dig...maybe it's because his voice is shot that makes it so interesting to listen to...(i once had to do back to back gigs with laryngitis, so as lead vocalist maybe i appreciate his situation)...as for paul..if there had to be one, i'd say 'back to the egg'...if just for 'baby's request' alone...anyway...be well my friend..catch ya' on the flipside..peace always...rocky
Mazzy, love to see two old pals share their opinions on such well known music.Do you have Paul's collaboration with Allen Ginsberg, it's an awesome extended play cd titled, ''Ballad Of The Skeleton''?
Regarding the albums by family members, particularly Yoko Ono. She did many albums with the Plastic Ono Band, separate from John. Not just a couple as you mentioned. • Yoko Ono/Plastic Ono Band (1970) • Fly (1971) • Feeling the Space (1973) • Between My Head and the Sky (2009) • Take Me to the Land of Hell (2013)
Mine (before I watched the video) John. POB/Rock and Roll..Paul..Ram/McCartney II..George..All Things Must Pass/ Gone Troppo..Ringo..Ringo/all his other albums are tied for worst...great video guys...
Band on the Run is Paul’s Dark side of the Moon. It’s too slick for some people, so Ram makes sense because it’s grittier and more real for many people. It’s second best for me. But BOTR is a towering achievement is writing, production and performance. People get tired of praising it, but just like DSOTM, it deserves the praise.
I can somewhat see that. I think Dark Side is the better album from beginning to end. Band on the Run has a couple of clunkers...or at least a couple of tracks that haven't aged well. At least for me. But your take on it is the more popular one. I get it.
Personally, I love the stuff that they wrote about the old days. Liverpool 8, Rory and the Hurricanes, Songs that We We Singing, Early Days, When we was Fab etc. Ringo does a great job on these. Makes us not forget why we listen to these solo albums to begin with.
Yeah I like Apple Jam too. 'Out Of The Blue' was meant to be the last track which would've worked better. And I agree the 2nd version of 'Isn't It A Pity' was superfluous. They could've fit another track or two on such as 'Gopala Krishna'. I'm partial to anything Indian by George.
I personally would take the LENNON / CLAYPOOL records by Sean . There both great albums. Yoko sorry I have a hard time getting into her. The first POB record with her. Has its moments. Season of Glass 👓 And some of her Dance , Drum and Bass works are OK. I agree with most of your post Beatle picks. The two best Solo Beatle. I alternate between the two. John Lennon POB. George Harrison ATMP. Paul's RAM a notch below. Ringo ⭐️ RINGO is really a good record. Ringo should do a Roots Country record. Ringo voice is still there. Paul well. It's shot. Sorry Paul.
Looking forward to stories and reviews of the Zapple catalog. I’m tempted by Two Virgins and Life with the Lions, on vinyl, but I need the Maslovian push. And you can send me your Driving Rain vinyl. I really like it except for Freedom.
I have to keep the solo records even the crappy ones. There is always a few tracks worth saving Don’t be tempted to jump in on Zappa. Cool conceptually but rarely listenable. 🌟
Harrison: Favorite “All Things Must Pass” Least Favorite “George Harrison” Horrible cover with the permed Harrison. Lennon: Favorite “Imagine” Least Favorite “Some Time in New York” McCartney: Favorite: “Flaming Pie” Least Favorite: “McCartney II” I haven’t listened to much past Kisses on the Ass Rringo: Favorite: Ringo Least Favorite: I honestly haven’t heard enough of Ringo’s solo stuff to answer this.
There are several later day Paul alums that are outstanding...chaos ...electric argument... memory almost full ...Egypt station are all worthwhile efforts
just saw this. The only thing wrong is, John didn´t (obviously) record anything after 1980, so the grading should have been restricted to the timeline 1970-1980. My opinion!
Why so much hate for Mamunia? I don’t take it seriously, but I can’t see the hate and I actually really love it for what it is. My top 3 favorite Paul Albums are Ram Venus and Mars Band on the Run John Imagine Plastic Ono Band And you know the rest
best beatles solos? ringo-probably ringo from 1973. john-the 1st 2 lps 1970 and 1971. plastic ono band and imagine. paul-1st solo mcartney 1970 ram 1971 and band on the run 1973. george-all things must pass 1970. all the best beatle solo lps came within the first 3 years after the 1970 split. after that none of them ever equalled the early releases.
Gotta agree for the most part but i do like extra texture because George’s singing voice is really good on that one. Not too much preachy stuff. Just pop. And i love red rose speedway and wings over America. Wildlife is fine. Walls and Bridges is pretty good and Mind Games does have its moments.
It’s tiresome to ALWAYS hear YT reviewers virtue-signal up front, with “my opinions are subjective”, blah blah. No sh*t, Sherlock. It ends up sounding MORE grandiose, not less. As if we need to be told that THESE particular opinions didn’t come down from God, unlike some of the speaker’s other ones.
Love The Beatles but never was that into solo Beatles. I liked some Paul solo hits but the only solo Beatles vinyl I ever bought was Lennon....Power To The People (the 45rpm).
I think they all had great work in the 70s, the 80s were very hit and miss. The late 90s were great for george and Paul's music and then since chaos and creation, Paul has had a Renaissance and another peak. There is some chaf to separate from the wheat but there's some damn good bread in there too
Johns ‘lost weekend’ output is very tinny. Put Mind Games up against Rubber Soul and the latter is all over it for dynamic range. I don’t get it, surely he was still working with pro engineers and producers. I know they were partying but even so his mid 70s output really suffers. And then recently Sean oversaw remixing for the 80th compilation and went way overboard with bass! Jeez
It's probably not within the rules as such, but I'd say Life with the Lions is the worst Lennon album. No Bed for Beatle John is charmingly naïve, and the double bill of Baby's Heartbeat and Two Minutes Silence is quite affecting, but Cambridge 1969 and Radio Play are frankly unlistenable. While Two Virgins and Wedding Album are low down as well, I can appreciate them for what they are. Depending on my mood, it's either Plastic Ono Band or Walls and Bridges as my favourite. Paul McCartney's output isn't as easy to define in terms of worst album. While I agree that Pipes of Peace is considerably weaker than Tug of War, I actually enjoy Driving Rain. It's very different from Flaming Pie or Run Devil Run. Again, I feel I have to cheat slightly here and go with Working Classical, but I still enjoy it. Favourite is probably Ram or Egypt Station. George didn't do a great deal, but Electronic Sound must surely qualify as his weakest release. Favourite would be either All Things Must Pass or George Harrison. Ringo Starr has had a varied career, and I've not heard all of his albums, but if I had to choose one it'd probably be Choose Love. It's a tie between Ringo and Beaucoups of Blues, depending on my mood.
"George didn't do a great deal"? Only 14 albums, 2 of them triples, and including 2 live albums (one was Grammy album of the year). Also 2 albums with the Wilburys. Many brilliant tracks on nearly all his albums if you'd actually listen.
John: Imagine/Sometime in NYC Paul: Ram/ Kisses OTB George: ATMP/ Cloud 9 ( always thought it was uneven and for me it hasn’t aged well) Ringo: Ringo/ Ringo 2012 Family: Photograph Smile/any Yoko album(I do like a handful of her songs tho)
Interesting, i never thought Cloud Nine would be ranked as George’s worst.... Best & worst respectively for me (mainstream albums only); John: Plastic Ono Band and Sometime In New York City Paul: RAM and McCartney II George: All Things Must Pass and Somewhere In England Ringo: Ringo and Ringo the 4th, although i havent heard all of his solo records
Rock and Roll Music would have been awesome if the production had been like the 1st album. The Carl Perkins outtakes from POB are awesome. My list: John's best: POB worst: Sometime in NYC (Stand by Me alone puts RnR ahead for me) Paul's best: RAM worst: Pipes of Peace (sounds like what it is-Tug outtakes). I don't think Driving Rain sucks ("Freedom" is shit though). I love the Mamunia/No Words medley from Band. George best: All Things Must Pass (Cloud 9 is awesome) worst: Extra Texture. Ringo best: "Ringo" worst: Sentimental Journey ( played it once) a lot to choose from here Sorry David, Mazzy wins because of Ringo and Cloud 9.😷✌
All Things Must Pass is possibly the most overrated album of all time. I say possibly because we also have the bloated filler fest White Album in the running,
Jim Fraser it’s not my favorite family record but I do like it a lot. The Bonus pick wasn’t necessarily a best of selection. But we do like to rattle the cage a bit 🤓😎✌🏽
Lennon Best: Mind Games (all songs are excellent) Worst: Rock n Roll (a mess) McCartney Best: McCartney (one of the warmest albums ever released) Worst: Chopa B CCCP (dreadful) Harrison Best: George Harrison (his best set of new songs) Worst: Extra Texture (zzzzzzzzzzzz) Ringo Best: Ringo Worst: pick any album from Ringo 4th onwards, they are mostly all shit.
Richard McCook I agree that Brainwashed is one of George’s best. Ringo has several worthwhile lps post Ringo the 4th. Check out all of the mark hudson produced albums
@@davidbacon6097 There are individual songs I like from some of his later albums like Walk With You, Rory & The Hurricanes and After All These Years. I'm just not really a Ringo fan. I did do a video on my Top 20 Ringo songs but had to include 6 from The Beatles
Let's be frank, had the 4 of them stopped in 1969 they'd be hip and revered these days. The solo outings, despite the odd track, removed them from this status. Most were average to poor.
@@timhewtson6212 Would you, I don't think I own any post Beatles vinyl on 45 or 33, other than Ono's seminal 1st Plastic LP. But it may be from the Lp's the 4 of them put out post 1970 you could find 10 listenable tracks.
Really? Let's give it a shot ... Mother Working Class Hero Isolation Imagine Crippled Inside Jealous Guy I Don't Want To Be A Soldier Gimme Some Truth Mind Games Whatever Gets You Through The Night Power to the People Happy Christmas (War is Over) How Do You Sleep At Night? Watching the Wheels Nobody Told Me (Just Like) Starting Over Live and Let Die Maybe I'm Amazed Band on the Run My Valentine This Never Happened Before Little Willow Junk Waterfalls Too Many People Jet Another Day Venus and Mars Bluebird Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth) What Is Life? Beware of Darkness When We Was Fab Bangla Desh My Sweet Lord Photograph It Don't Come Easy You're Beautiful, Your Sixteen, and You're Mine Everyone and Everything 40 songs and at least 3 albums' worth of stellar music. And there is probably at least another album you could squeeze out of all four of them.
@@timhewtson6212 Your stellar music'' is my AOR tat it seems, or mostly. A few of these I can tolerate if they came on the radio. I was a Beatles fan, or a fan of 5 or so of their tunes, gorgeous pop songs. You could probably find 10 Beatles tunes that made an LP worth a purchase, although it is music made by and for teenagers in the main.
I agree fully that The Beatles started out as a singles band, as did The Rolling Stones. The idea of being a pure albums band came in later. On that basis, you could fairly describe The Beatles as being intentionally AOR, especially for Paul McCartney or Ringo Starr's writing. The point I am making is that the solo works are a continuation of their previous joint work, and if people liked The Beatles before the split, then they could like them equally after the split if you combined the best of their solo output. I have problems seeing John Lennon's solo work as exclusively AOR. Certainly, you can call it tat, if you want to. Lines like, "Mother, you had me, but I never had you," or. "But you are still fucking peasants as far as I can see," or, "I don't want to be a lawyer, Mama - I don't want to have to lie," are not the kinds of lines you hear in standard pop songs. I think you could say the same of much of George Harrison's output, too. I suppose the other point I am arguing is that The Beatles were far from spent or washed up when they split. They could have continued to produce several very Beatles-sounding albums from the evidence of their later output, while trimming out a lot of much weaker songs. There again, you are clearly not much of a Beatles fan, so you were not going to have much time for anything they produced, with perhaps, say, a handful of exceptions. And that's a perfectly valid point of view. We like the bands we like, and it's just as well we don't all like the same bands and all hate the same bands.
I think Egypt Station is his worst vocally, his voice is shot. I agree on Dark Horse and yes it has some good songs on it. John's Sometime In New York City was his low point. I think Walls and Bridges is great.
Egypt works because the songs are strong. His voice is certainly not what it used to be...but he’s still effective. Sometime in NYC is spared the worst honor because of a couple of tracks...Well (baby please don’t go), luck of the Irish, and the ballad of J & Y sequel, que pasa New York
"But first you must learn to smile as you kill."

best beatles solos? ringo-probably ringo from 1973. john-the 1st 2 lps 1970 and 1971. plastic ono band and imagine. paul-1st solo mcartney 1970 ram 1971 and band on the run 1973. george-all things must pass 1970. all the best beatle solo lps came within the first 3 years after the 1970 split. after that none of them ever equalled the early releases.
Cover of Paul's Driving Rain is him taking a piss! Literally...
Great choices both ways, I mean the best and the worst.
I like Tug of War & Venus & Mars
Ringo Starr's "Ringo The 4th", "Bad Boy" & "Old Wave" are his worst albums!!! George Harrison "Extra Texture (Read All About It)" is his worst!!!
There is some chaf to separate from the wheat but there's some damn good bread in there too
Ram! ❤️ A perfect album. Every song. And I LOVE Linda’s vocals on this record.
Paul McCartney "Pipes Of Peace" his worst solo album!! The late John Lennon "Some Time In New York City" his worst.
For me Photograph Smile is by far the best Beatle related album. The Claypool Lennon albums are also very good. Putting Yoko at the top is WRONG.
Ram? Percy Thrillington’s version is the bomb!
There are no rules 😘😵💫✌🏽
"George didn't do a great deal"? Only 14 albums, 2 of them triples, and including 2 live albums (one was Grammy album of the year). Also 2 albums with the Wilburys. Many brilliant tracks on nearly all his albums if you'd actually listen.
John: Imagine/Sometime in
NYC
Paul: Ram/ Kisses OTB
George: ATMP/ Cloud 9 ( always thought it was uneven and for me it hasn’t aged well)
Ringo: Ringo/ Ringo 2012
Family: Photograph Smile/any
Yoko album(I do like a handful of her songs tho)
I like Plastic Ono Band but I don’t love it. Yes the lyrics are brutal and honest but I thought it was a bit boring and stiff musically.
Interesting, i never thought Cloud Nine would be ranked as George’s worst....
Best & worst respectively for me (mainstream albums only);
John: Plastic Ono Band and Sometime In New York City
Paul: RAM and McCartney II
George: All Things Must Pass and Somewhere In England
Ringo: Ringo and Ringo the 4th, although i havent heard all of his solo records
Yeah Cloud Nine is definitely one of my faves. My partner here is dead wrong 🥺🤓🥊
Ram should have been called Crap. So many stinkers on that album. Simply don't get the fuss about that one.
Rock and Roll Music would have been awesome if the production had been like the 1st album. The Carl Perkins outtakes from POB are awesome. My list:
John's best: POB worst: Sometime in NYC (Stand by Me alone puts RnR ahead for me)
Paul's best: RAM worst: Pipes of Peace (sounds like what it is-Tug outtakes). I don't think Driving Rain sucks ("Freedom" is shit though). I love the Mamunia/No Words medley from Band.
George best: All Things Must Pass (Cloud 9 is awesome) worst: Extra Texture.
Ringo best: "Ringo" worst: Sentimental Journey ( played it once) a lot to choose from here
Sorry David, Mazzy wins because of Ringo and Cloud 9.😷✌
Mamunia 🥺🤓😷
@@mazzysmusic hey, he did the Africa thing before Paul Simon🤷♂️🍸😷
They should have a peace sign emoji with a glove on it. ✌
It's FRIAR Park, not Freer Park or however you're pronouncing it.
Jim Fraser he never pronounced it like Friar Tuck. George always pronounced it like in rhymes with AIR.
Jim Fraser you sat “fyer” I say “friar “...let’s call the whole thing off
Ram is a classic, but McCartney has too many forgettable solo records to mention here.
All Things Must Pass is possibly the most overrated album of all time. I say possibly because we also have the bloated filler fest White Album in the running,
Ringo only has bad records!
I had to stop the video when you selected the Yoko album as the best family album. You lost what little credibility you had at that point.
Jim Fraser it’s not my favorite family record but I do like it a lot. The Bonus pick wasn’t necessarily a best of selection. But we do like to rattle the cage a bit 🤓😎✌🏽
Lennon
Best: Mind Games (all songs are excellent)
Worst: Rock n Roll (a mess)
McCartney
Best: McCartney (one of the warmest albums ever released)
Worst: Chopa B CCCP (dreadful)
Harrison
Best: George Harrison (his best set of new songs)
Worst: Extra Texture (zzzzzzzzzzzz)
Ringo
Best: Ringo
Worst: pick any album from Ringo 4th onwards, they are mostly all shit.
Richard McCook I loved everyone’s choices. Sometimes a bad record still has a place in our hearts
You guys like Gone Troppo?? Lol
I love Gone Troppo!
I don't get all the love for All Things Must Pass. It shows why none of his songs were good enough to make it into the Beatles' catalog.
Let's be frank, had the 4 of them stopped in 1969 they'd be hip and revered these days. The solo outings, despite the odd track, removed them from this status. Most were average to poor.
Still, if you combined the best of the solo albums you'd get several classics.
Mother
Working Class Hero
Isolation
Imagine
Crippled Inside
Jealous Guy
I Don't Want To Be A Soldier
Gimme Some Truth
Mind Games
Whatever Gets You Through The Night
Power to the People

Everyone and Everything
40 songs and at least 3 albums' worth of stellar music.
Yes regarding his voice on Egypt Station however the music is adventurous and imho Paul really made it work. It’s a really great late era album.
