Most of my investment is in my retirement accounts with my work but I have some stocks I play around with also. I have about 30 different stocks in my etrade account, some with 30 or more shares each, and most just bought on a whim or poor selection criteria. Overall I have pretty much broke even for the total value of $4000 or so. I recently started a new brokerage account at sofi and I have about $20 or so a week going to it. The key to big returns is not big moving stocks. It's managing risk in relationship to reward. Having the correct size on and turning your edge as many times as necessary to reach your goal. That holds true from long term investing to day trading.

great content humphrey. do you know of any way to deal with anxiety with finance? i have a lot of anxiety when it comes to finance which makes it difficult for me to do the things i need to. thanks in advance :)
If you’re going the Joel Greenblatt route, owning 8 stocks (not all concentrated in the same sector) mitigates ~80% of diversification risk, while owning 500 stocks eliminates 99% of that risk. In other words, his viewpoint is that 8-10 stocks is mostly sufficient, and your diversification should come from owning various asset classes (stocks, bonds, real estate, gold, etc.) rather than trying to achieve diversification in the stock market alone. Not saying this is the best way to think about it, but certainly comes from a guy with a solid track record! Also not to say this is the best route for achieving maximum returns-most would probably argue putting all your equity holdings in a market index fund achieves both diversification and the best possible returns in the long run.
I don't understand what is the use of owning 20 freaking Index funds, I have three and I think they capture the market pretty well and diversify my risk: VGIAX (Growth High risk, generally has higher rate of return); VFIAX (S&P 500- good return while moderate risk) and VTSAX (Total stock market- lower risk according to me); I have also invested some amount into the corresponding ETFs; but what other ETFs can help me diversify more?
By biggest problem with the S&P 500 Index fund is the fact that a third of the value comes from a couple stupendously overpriced stocks, and thus you are overpaying, ensuring little to no return for years to come. The S&P has returned zero for decades multiple times, example: S&P had 860 pts in 1968, and only got back to that in 1993, 25 years later. A quarter century of zero real returns. Not saying it will happen again, but it defenitely could.
Hi Humphrey, any thought on market movement as it has been going down recently, but will it recover soon due to company earnings for many being released this week?
The market will eventually improve and increase gradually over a period of time as downward movement never really last long. It's advisable not to be shaken by temporary movements in the market though, as investing is supposed to be for a long period of time.

I'm convinced that all of these finance jargon, unnecessary extra steps, and weird math are used to scare away hard-working people from claiming what their companies actually owe them for all of their hard work and for this sole reason I make sure I use an advisor.
I don’t think there is an optimized amount like that; it depends on your idea of the market and risk appetite; you can divide your portfolio in portions based on that and go from there; i hve nearly 2/3 of mine in tech stocks and other money is put in more conservative options
I own 3 ETF’s and 4 stocks. I would consider myself a passive investor. The 3 ETF’s are in my Roth which I can only contribute 6k a year. I’m thinking about buying two of the same ETF’s in a separate account and contribute more after I reach my 6k max.
I follow a diversify via ETFs and be EXTREMELY selective via individual stocks strategy. At least 50% in a broad market ETF and 50% in 5-10 individual stocks.
My advice is always to keep the majority in ETFs that cover multiple sectors. Then have a couple stocks, as a small percentage, picked out that you feel personally attached to or interested in. That way you can mitigate a lot of the risk but also have a personal touch to your portfolio. I feel this mitigates some of the emotional downsides or disinterest people have with investing. Also helps with the urge to constantly buy/sell with fluxes in the market.

I'm 24, I own 5 stocks & 3 ETFs so far as of right now. Thinking about going the ETF only route soon maybe in a year or two I want to wait and see what happens. I always want to buy & hold.
How many stocks you own also depends on how much money you are investing though. If you have 10k but having 20 stocks just don't make sense in my opinion. Personally with 10k I think 1 to 3 stocks is good but that is just my style.

When some people think of successful stock traders, they think of multimillionaires lounging in a beach town, making trades and relaxing. That reality is rare, and stock trading isn't as easy or lucrative as it might seem from the outside. Despite challenges, some people elect to stock trade as a part-time job, or they take on stock trading as their full-time gig. This has always been a question for me. Thanks.
Q: What would be healthy x amount per stock. You know what I mean. I have 19 stocks average from 10 shares to 50 and 3 ETF
At least 50% in a broad market ETF and 50% in 5-10 individual stocks.
love that.
Diversification is key. Owning stonks is a must. great video Humphrey! Bravo
I got well over 100 stocks all types of sectors. And 8 etfs
And got like 85 with auto investing.
Plus I got Betterment Robo
Plus I got fundrise
My advice is always to keep the majority in ETFs that cover multiple sectors. Then have a couple stocks, as a small percentage, picked out that you feel personally attached to or interested in. That way you can mitigate a lot of the risk but also have a personal touch to your portfolio. I feel this mitigates some of the emotional downsides or disinterest people have with investing. Also helps with the urge to constantly buy/sell with fluxes in the market.
any recommendations ?
@@jofa6897 ~80% in VOO, VTI, VGT, VONG are the ones I’ve chosen. Then businesses that I have personal stake in either using their products or lots of people in my circle who do. APPL, TSLA, NVDA. Along with ABBV and KO when I focused on dividends; make up the remaining 20%
@@jacobstolte8865 thank you so much for the help😁😁

Another amazing video as always . For me I have 3 etfs and 5 stocks . My favorites are vti and schd .
Personally with 10k I think 1 to 3 stocks is good but that is just my style.
nice video and great speech, I'm novice to cryptocurrency and I don't understand how it really works. Can someone guide me on the right approach to investing and making good profit from cryptocurrency investment?

Loved the video like always. Could you do a similar one for crypto talking about having a well diversified portfolio across the various sectors and such?
It’s quite a mix up in my head when I read about people grabbing multi-figures monthly as income in investments even in this crazy days in the market, any pointers on how to make substantial progress in earnings?would be appreciated,
Great say on crypto and passive platforms 👍 my honest opinion is only promoting what is working.
You make it seem unreal to make up to that as a passive income annually, when it’s clearly possible. I have made over 1Hunnid thousand dollars from January till now with no joke game plan. She’s a masterpiece and her name is Eliana Brooklyn.😁

If you know your stuff and follow a strategy, you can make money over time through stock trades by adopting the signal of a licensed broker
I own 7 stocks and no ETFs for the moment. I have 39 stocks in my watch list and 4 ETFs. I'm aiming to own 1 full share of each by the end of the year.
Nice content. To me, trading the forex and crypto market is way better than any online investment 💯
@@ernestseo9570 You are right but the market is profiting if you are using really a good broker or account manager to help out with trades or provide signals

"...and 69 industries (nice)..." LMBO!! The fact that you put it in there so subtly (that's what she said) is what makes that the best line ever!! Lol

You really help me know where to start looking for information. I think what is so daunting is the amount of information and sources. Thanks for the information and links to places you trust as a more experienced investor.
You are so welcome!
I'm actually tired of worrying about stocks. it's driving me nuts these days,I think crypto investment is far better than stock made over $39k in a week.

Enough stocks to be defensive in each market cycle, and enough stocks to be diversified in at least 6 to 8 market sectors,
Coming from a financial background, I find it really helpful and resonated with me when he said:
"69 industries, nice"
