- If this doesn’t convince you of how truly cheesy, cringeworthy, and awful James LaBrie’s vocals have become, then nothing will. Let’s count the ways in which he sucks:
1. Constantly out-of-tune and struggling to hit high notes, even in spite of songs being tuned down a half-step
2. Bad rhythm - often falling behind the beat
3. Poor tone - pushing the high notes too far back into his throat. This has been a hallmark of LaBrie's live singing for many years, but it's especially bad now.
4. Lack of enunciation - sounds like a toothless granny doing drunken karaoke of Dream Theater
5. Poor attempts at ad-libbing on studio lines
6. Overwrought vibrato - sounds like he’s doing a bad impression of an opera singer
7. Bad breath control - having to stop lines abruptly to catch his breath
Please see my two articles specifically about James LaBrie and what this evil son of a bitch did to me that put me in an extremely foul mood last year. After I had been busting my ass for two years sharing Dream Theater bootlegs and remixes, to near universal acclaim, and all the while, trying to be NICE to LaBrie, and not call attention to how bad he sounded throughout the Along For The Ride and Astonishing tours, he insults me out-of-the-blue on Facebook over the silly American Idol video, saying that I’m a miserable loser who needs to move out of my parent’s basement and get a life. To add insult to injury, the American Idol video was passed off to me by another Dream Theater fan who was harassed off TH-cam by a lunatic who Jordan Rudess inexplicably hired to do a video. LaBrie removed the post, but never issued me an apology, nor did he POLITELY ask me to remove the video like an adult would have done if it was such an issue to him.

James LaBrie is not the “nice guy” naïve fools make him out to be. Because if he was, he would have voluntarily quit Dream Theater by now. Even he knows deep down that he is not doing a good job and dragging down the other four members of the band.

The number of DT fans that still defend LaBrie infuriates me beyond belief.
From all the TH-cam comments to the comments from adoring fans on DT's Facebook posts all sharing the sentiment that "it sounded amazing at last night's show" etc, they are either in total denial or are successfully being fooled by the miming and excessive vocal backing tracks now being implemented in DT's live show.
LaBrie's time is up, plain and simple. I've been a hardcore fan since '92 and for the last 5 years was desperately clinging to some delusion that LaBrie "still had it" but nah not anymore and over these past few months I've finally let go of the lie.
He was once a force to be reckoned with and I still thoroughly enjoy studio and live material from 1992-2002 (some shows from 2011/12 I found him to have a bit of a sudden revival of sorts, displaying great effort and his vocals were listenable for the most part) but he is truly awful now and I believe they should either let him go and make some serious changes or just call it a day with Dream Theater and pursue other projects; their music is getting more and more repetitive and it's not as if they'd struggle to find work elsewhere, being strong musicians.
Look up the killing hand from the perfect Germany 1993 bootleg. Absolutely one of his best vocal performances. It's such a shame he blew his voice

I feel like if this was a talent competition or someone singing in front of just a general audience (church, etc.), It would be hard to stifle the laughter. So many lyrics I know and couldn't even comprehend on this.
I'm one of those people who wished DT to perform Images and Words in its entirety. Man, I did not realise back then what I was wishing for. >.
They already played the whole album in 2007, making the entire Images, Words, and Beyond Tour unnecessary.
If DT is also going to commemorate the "Awake" album with Labrie's current condition, that goes to show that they (especially Petrucci) didn't learn a lesson from their recent tour, and more fans will continue to turn against Labrie
I was at a Show of this Tour and the feeling of the complete Images Album was great and I didn't cared much for his vocal condition but yes today you can't stand him since 2015 in my opinion. And in 2020 they gave us the whole Scenes Album which wasn't as bad live but why do they put Labrie through this? It would be absolutely fine with me if the Setlists consists only of Songs from Octavarium onwards. That would increase his live Performance a lot !

I agree with your assessment. I do believe if he allowed himself to get a professional vocal trainer and followed the person's advice to sing in tune and with better enunciation he could do it. Now, people, he will never to able to sound like he did back in 91/92, but it would be miles of improvement. I cannot think of any singer in their 50's being able to sing exactly like they did in their early 20s.
But hasn't LaBrie studied with Jaime Vendera and Victoria something or another? I think you're being overly optimistic. LaBrievers always flog some hypothetical "LaBrie could sound good if X happened" scenario, when the most realistic way for Dream Theater to have good vocals again is just to get a new singer.

They already have a different drummer, plus labrie is part of the core sound of the band, not really his tone, but his melodies. If you take away labrie, you have no dream theater anymore. I would rather have labrie onstage sounding terrible, then some other guy who sounds phenomenal

The melodies that James doesn't write, you mean. There are a host of young and hungry power metal singers out there who'd be glad to step into LaBrie's shoes and would do the old material far more justice than LaBrie does today. What Dream Theater needs is a fresh-faced 19-22 year old who's got a pristine voice, a lot of ambition, and an understanding of music theory and at least one instrument, and let him into their songwriting process. They need someone who is on their level, and James is not and hasn't been since 1995-96.

Dude I read both your articles. I been watching your videos since the Mrdreamtheater2 days. Im sorry about all the shit you went through. But you really got to let this go man. Jlb sucks now, DT isnt what it used to be. But going on this charade isnt going to change that. You got to remember that everyones human, and putting people up on a pedestal and zeroing in on their flaws will only make you feel worse that theyre not the shining image of perfection you want/expected them to be. I dont know you but like I said I been watching those bootlegs you post on YT on the Mrdreamtheater2 channel and I really appreciate the time you take to polish it all up and from one dt fan to another - thanks for all your hard work. James Labrie was a great singer... WAS a great singer. He needs to quit so the band need it. Dream Theater is turning into a joke version of itself! I know the rest of the band still making a great job but James voice its making this band a kind of amateur DT cover band! Yikes!

A lifelong DT fan here, but releasing THIS on CD and selling tickerts to online show that was leaked on some Japanese website was fucking horrible. Some performances just have to be ditched and never remembered again, for the fuck's sake. Let's see how he does in 2022 with lower vocal parts..

I am a singer and I have to tell you - the fact that his not planning his ways of handling the tour and does not practice or even troubleshoot his terrible moments - on these facts alone he should be fired. He doesn't consider this a job anymore.
koko mishka it's not entirely his fault, his voice was insane on the early songs on this show, he needs to put his foot down and be straight up with JP and tell him that he can't play mega long shows anymore. He will also hopefully never play Take the Time again. I saw them in Glasgow from this tour and that was probabpy one of his 5 best nights from the tour and Take the Time was still horrible, everything else besides that was amazing and he made very few mistakes

Is this the far from the quality of the actual "Back to Budokan 2017" recording? I'm trying to figure out if this is badly compressed or if it's not even discernably different from the actual recording. I'm more sickened by the mix and audio quality than James LabBrie to be honest.

A more burning question to me is where's the accountability? The band was meticulous about vocals 1986-1990 since Chris Collins, Charlie Dominici, and Steve Stone all got rejected, but now this is tolerated.

They desperately need a new singer. I like LaBrie on records most of the time, and he used to be great back in the day. Live he's terrible these days, to the point where he's hardly hitting a single note. There are tons of singers out there, why not pick a new one who's able to sing the songs in tune? Toto replaced Bobby Kimball after he faced the same problems as James, where he just couldn't hit any notes in tune anymore.

I've seen it scheduled at the end of January on their guide, but, after a month, it's impossible to find any video on internet or P2P. That's really strange, because I don't believe that an official Dream Theater video (even if this isn't intented for sale) was not ripped by some fans and made it available on streaming.
I've seen 2 concert of that tour (the second was just because they played in my city), so I'm very curious to see how James "sings" on that dvd , that surely is overdubbed from the first to the last note.
No idea. I would upload the video to TH-cam were it not for WOWOW striking down the video they did for DT in 2014. It's amazing how much worse LaBrie has gotten in only 3 years. In 2014, he was mediocre. Now, he's awful. His enunciation seems to be the biggest thing to go down the toilet. What struck me the most about the WOWOW video wasn't LaBrie though, it was how Bitch Chintzy buried Myung in the mix to the point where you can barely hear him on the climactic Metropolis solo. This has been a persistent complaint of Dream Theater fans for a long time. Just another highly reasonable plea the band won't listen to.
This is one of the biggest issue about John Myung: on his bass, he use a shitty tone, made with clanking notes and very awful distorsion. He has a great bass and a great gear, but he made them sound like a 120$ Harley! So, even if his volume is up, you can't hear him, because his tone get "lost in the mix", covered by guitar or lowered by sound engineer to avoid too many clank.
If you listen the bass isolated tracks you can hear how bad it sounds alone: bad sound, bad distorsion, wrong notes (yes! you can clearly hear some mistakes, even if you can't hear them on the record!) and a very ugly tone. It seems that JM has no ability (or, maybe, no will) to look after about his sound...and no one has the courage to do it in its place.
So, when he get in the mix, in the best of case, you can still hear him but you lose all distorsions and effects (do you know that in "Fatal Tragedy" or "In the back of angels" he uses a distorted bass?).
In the worst case -like on live show- his bass disappear, absorbed by guitar frequencies.
For example, why he keep using that shitty distorsion on Metropolis bass solo? Most of the time you can barely hear it.

Sadly , they now look like a group of 5 people that wanna do a cover from Dream Theater than DT itself, but if you search there's better cover bands..... petrucci tries to cover this shit show with solos and bringing old stuff back, but honestly the man cant do all by himself, that's where portnoy would help a freaking lot, now more than ever he would help, mainly on the departure of the person that SHOULD have gone in the first place......

there are times.. and times... in the distance over time tour and anniversary of scenes from a memory, at least in the Argentina concert, he did GREAT. And SFAM has some quite high notes..

E: I remember watching DT live concerts from the s/t tour and I thought LaBrie sounded pretty awful but still better than the average amateur DT tribute band singer who speaks English as a seventh language and sings way over his natural range. Now he can't even reach THAT standard. This is just fucking unbelievable. That said, I don't think his vibrato is overwrought, not any more than it was in '92. The real problem is that his vibrato sucks--sloppy, warbly, and uncontrolled, where it used to be tight, consistent, and smoothly escalating over the duration of a note. And after all the vocal trainers he's been through, you'd thing someone would have taught him to stop breathing into the mic. I can forgive him for that when he was young and had a beautiful voice but it's infuriating now.
E2: HOW DO YOU FUCK UP THE NOTES ON THE BEGINNING OF SURROUNDED? A novice could sing that and hit the notes right (though certainly not the feeling). If you can't handle notes on the lower end of your tessitura at a restrained volume and limited duration, it's time to go.

Such a shame and I'm a DT fan...they need a 2 to 3 year break, so James can rest his voice and get it back on track and sing within his current range, not try to sing how he used too, he's making his voice worse by trying, he may as well admit he cant sing how he could in 93, a vocal coach would tell him, that and DT's non stop touring, no wonder the poor guy's voice is knackered. A big break then they could come back with 1 or 2 great albums and call it a day for the band, after all, they arent getting any younger, as much as I am a fan, I think they should bow out at their peak, the tribute band Awake sound better at the moment, this is painful.
I'm not so convinced James will be able to recover his voice through rest. James' voice got worse between 2000 and 2002, and also 2012 and 2014, when Dream Theater did not tour. They recorded albums in the interim years (possibly JLB solo albums as well), but that's several weeks tracking vocals, at most. If anything, it seems like touring actually keeps his voice more in shape than it would be otherwise. They need a new singer.
James should abandon the band. We will be always grateful for his contribution, but this performance is awful.

This is a direct result of recording an 2 hour+ album with very difficult and aggressive vocals and then touring for 2 years straight. They are on a break right now and recording an album in June. By the time they start touring again he will sound much better

I love Labrie and his voice but this is just torture. He is clearly more interested in non-DT projects and is singing so much better in them.
