HOW TO PAINT ABSTRACTS - ART LESSON ON VALUE. Making abstract pieces more dynamic and engaging

- In this video I explain why value is so important in creating abstract paintings. I paint a sample painting showing how the lack of proper value makes your painting look flat and uninteresting. I talk about how using the proper values in a painting helps your eye to travel around the canvas and can take you on a journey through the painting.
Understanding value in abstract art is essential because it establishes the foundation for depth, contrast, and visual impact. Value refers to the lightness or darkness of colors, and mastering it allows artists to create a sense of form, movement, and mood, even in non-representational works. In abstract compositions, where shapes and colors take center stage, manipulating value helps guide the viewer's eye and evoke emotional responses. By exploring variations in value, artists can add layers of complexity, balance, and harmony to their work, making their abstract pieces more dynamic and engaging.

Thank you, Cheryl for this very important lesson on value. I really appreciate you and look forward to more lessons.
Excellent value colour demo
Glad you liked it. Thank you for watching and commenting.
A good lesson for me. I am always afraid of using darker colours.... scary!! More experimenting needed
value is not as easy as just knowing what to do, I have had to practice and practice more, but once you start to get the hang of how valuable it is, your paintings start to just take off
What if you were not using say the orange, with all the harmonizing colors from your pallette?
you do not need to do orange, you can pull in any other color. Are you looking to do one that compliments? any other color across the color scale would work. What is the most important is adding a bit of the other colors into the new color as it tends to harmonizes them ALL!!! Does that make sense?
Is there a specific method When adding different values into the piece. For example, do you add a darker value next to a lighter value in different areas in your piece?
You certainly can. That is a place where the eye will look and color will pop!! There is so much to value but once you start to get it, it can be incredible. Putting value differences around the painting to pull the eye and difference sizes are also great tools. thank you for watching!!
