    This video really resonated with me. I work with new immigrants trying to learn English. I've made it my mission to really connect with them in more personal ways. I've been in several of their homes; 1-2 bedroom rentals, where up to 6-8 people are living, maybe, only 2 able to work right away. Minimal belongings, all second-hand. In our cold winters they wear blankets as coats sometimes. Each & every time I visit, they welcome me with a huge array of food! I always visit with bags of pantry staples, thinking my food will bless them greatly. Imagine my shock when they bless ME with such hospitality! It is so humbling to see how much other cultures value friendship, sharing food, kindness, so much more than I do. And I'm the Christian in the room!!! They have so little but, share it with me. Ive learned so much from them and it's really shown me my own greed.♥️🇨🇦

      This was such a blessing to read, thank you for sharing this. Isn't it amazing how other cultures live that seem so off limits to us? Seeing other families living in smaller homes with MORE people in them is the norm in so many other countries... I really think America and other countries like ours could learn so much from them. This reminds me of the story in Mark about the widow who gave her last two copper coins and how that was worth so much more to Jesus than what the rich people gave. Thank you again for sharing this 🤍

    I’m so glad this video popped up on my home page! I’ve been so interested in establishing a more minimalistic lifestyle lately in order to reduce clutter, pay off debt, and increase joy and peace in my life. As a fellow believer, I love how you tied in the biblical perspectives and how we can view minimalism from a Christian mindset. Most minimalist videos leave out scripture so thank you for keeping the Number One number one!! 🙏🏻

    I feel this is a lot of what God meant by the verses about how hard it is for a rich man to enter Heaven. We are in such a state of discontent and wanting that we can’t fathom helping anyone else, except for a little here or there to make ourselves feel good. For wherever your treasure is, there your heart lies also. We often feel like we’re poor, when we are in fact far for from it. We’re looking at it through the lens of the US or the western world. We are in the top 1%. We are the rich. It is so so hard for us to grasp the difference in want vs need. Some are obvious, yes, but we often still get tripped up. I feel blessed to be born here and sometimes I see the trouble in it. I love your ability to really sit with something and see through it, like the real reality of something or the biblical truth of it. So many people lack that. They’ll argue you to death because they can’t possibly sit with conviction or change.

      "We are in such a state of discontent and wanting that we can’t fathom helping anyone else, except for a little here or there to make ourselves feel good." You NAILED it, sister! I think you're right - we're blinded because we've never known true poverty. We only know the "poverty" we see in the US, which, as tragic as it is, isn't nearly the poverty experienced by so many people in the world. What a lovely comment - thank you for this! I would have loved to have a conversation with you about this topic before I did this video.... you're so wise! Thank you for being here 🤍

    I also wanted to mention that it's important that you not become prideful that you did things for others and not to feel like a martyr. I know when we do good things we want to share and be puffed up but I think that that completely goes against doing the good deed. I just think this is something else in our culture that is promoted is to show the good things you're doing to encourage people to do the same things or to make people feel warm and fuzzy. Our good deeds don't have to be recorded and they don't have to be flaunted.❤

    • @SharieDeBord
      @SharieDeBord  12 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      I ABSOLUTELY agree! If we do good deeds for the praise of others, are hearts are in the wrong place. Matthew 6:1-4 "Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”
      We are to do good unto others quietly, in secret and without adoration from others but rather do it knowing that by doing so we are glorifying our Father in heaven! It's hard sometimes because our flesh wants the praise and to be seen as good by others. Lots of work by the Holy Spirit to make that change in our hearts.
      This is such a good reminder, thank you for the comment and thank you for being here! 🤍

    I absolutely love this idea. Bringing it to God and asking for the Spirit is such good advice for figuring out where to draw the line on what's a want vs need. I think the severity by which people cut "wants" out of their lives will vary so much, but so long as that's the conviction they're receiving, then it's a great first step to this lifestyle of giving!

    • @SharieDeBord
      @SharieDeBord  12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      YES! It's all about balance. But I think so many of us are quick to be generous after we've met our own desires, instead of beforehand (myself included!). Living in step with the Spirit sis crucial!

    Lovely video.
    I visited my sister this Christmas. She makes 20 grand more than me and doesn't have her basic needs met bc she spends frivolously. I have my needs met.
    I enjoy setting goals for myself. I want to save up for a new bedframe. My bed slides and that is really annoying to me. It is like your couch in that it functions but is inconvenient. When I get my new bedframe, I will give away my current bedframe. This bedframe will be a blessing to somebody bc they want a modern slim (read bed slides around on top) one like this. I can do BOTH wants and generosity.
    If I am living with things that nobody else would even want, then it might be a "need" to upgrade. I don't deserve to live in poverty either. This keeps me from the poverty glorification that I grew up with.

    • @SharieDeBord
      @SharieDeBord  12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I agree, it's definitely not that we can't have nice things, new things or have what we want. I just think we take our "wants" too far and we become VERY selfish with things that aren't really needs (speaking for myself here!) but if we chose to use those resources for others it could wildly change the world! Thank you for this comment :)

    One thing I deal with is I tell myself that once I have these things bought, like the list of things on my phone that I’ve been keeping, that I won’t want anything else and I’ll be free. Like I’ve had these things in my list for so long that I know I really can benefit from them and I convince myself no other wants will get me. But wants will always find you. Always.

    I think this is a really interesting topic. But in the end, I don't think God wants us to suffer by being annoyed every single day when we look at our sofas ;-) Maybe you could sell your old sofa and give the money to someone in need? Or you could give the sofa to a needy family who doesn't have one. Then you could - in good conscience - buy the sofa that makes more sense for you and your family. Do you need a bed frame? Is it annoying you? Is your mattress on the floor and not getting enough air circulation and accumulating moisture? Ikea has really cheap very simple bed frames that might bring you the peace of mind you are looking for. God is there to help us with everything we need. We are his children. Like Jesus said, would a parent give a rock to a child who asks for bread? If we suffer unnecessarily it takes away focus and energy we can use to help others in many different ways.🙂 God bless ❤✝ Love your channel!

      I LOVE this perspective! :)
      I absolutely think that I could sell/donate the white couch and buy a new one. I think for me it's more a matter of learning to be content. I struggle with always wanting something new, something better, etc.,
      Our bed does sit up off the ground on a very basic frame, and it works perfectly fine! The point I was trying to make is that we don't need everything the world is so quick to try to tell us that we do. Does that make sense? :)
      I agree with you that God gives us GIFTS, as any good father would and would not want us to suffer. Again, for me it's just a matter of contentedness.. I REALLY struggle with that. It's a big reason why I'm doing this no spend this year - learning to be content and paying off debt. I am so looking forward to being able to be MORE generous when are debt free next year!
      Thank you for such a lovely comment! So glad your'e here! 🤍

      @@SharieDeBord Thanks for your reply. ❤Yes, absolutely this makes sense. You want to learn to be content with what you have without having this desire to constantly buy more stuff. I get it. I am struggling with this as well, believe me! I also have a very simple wooden frame under my mattress and often think: should I get a proper frame so I don't look like some loser (to others!), but then I just don't care enough and still don't have a frame. Lol. I am also trying to have a no spend year, or at least a no spend month, but I already broke my rules many times. It's sooo hard. This morning I thought: no more buying books, not allowed, and this afternoon I saw a book about the psychological reasons for spending money and of course I had to buy it. The irony! UGH. But I think this urge to spend money really has something to do with psychology more than with our bank accounts. What do you think? (The book btw is: "Everything but Money", so far I love it. :-)

    • @SharieDeBord
      @SharieDeBord  11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @ So much of it comes down to where our hearts are. It was a really hard pill to swallow... my heart wasn't FIRST after Jesus, it was after worldly possessions. It took me A LOT of prayer and asking the Lord to change my heart, change my perspective. But He answered my prayer. Any time we have a desire that is in line with His word and we ask for it, He is faithful to answer that prayer. But there is NO WAY my perspective would have shifted had I not asked Him to change my heart. Ultimately, thats where our wants and desires are, right? :) I was just like you - setting up rules and failing EVERY SINGLE TIME. The only thing that was able to change me was having heart felt conversations with God and laying them, very vulernably at His feet and asking Him to change me. It's not easy, but I promise you - it's worth it! 🤍

      I think you may be missing the point.
      I don't think she's talking about a CHALLENGE like people do online, but really examining your life in light of what Christians ought to be prioritizing and determining if your stewarding GOD'S money (it's all his!) in a way that lines up with biblical christian values...not cultural Christian values.
      I agree doing a no spend life challenge would be difficult. I'm assuming the goal would be like most peoples goals of saving money, paying off debt, etc. Yet if your goal is just to be a true Christian who realizes materialism is shallow and dishonors God and you find joy in giving what he's given you back to him....less challenging and definitely worth it.
