Hi friends, I'm Sharie. I make videos about embracing a minimal + simple lifestyle and how they can work together to bring us a life full of abundance + joy. My time used to be spent on our stuff... cleaning it, organizing it, maintaining it. But life is so much more than our possessions. When we let go of our stuff, we free up space and time for things in our lives that actually matter.
If having less stuff and more meaningful time in your day is a value of yours too, I'd love to have you subscribe! Thank you for being here 🌿

what I got my kids for Christmas as a minimalist | MINIMALISM
Showing you how we got our kids less for Christmas, but made the gifts more meaningful :) Christmas really is more enjoyable when we're not stressed about spending money we don't have, figuring out where we're going to put all the new stuff but rather enjoying what matters most and *spoiler* the important stuff isn't found under the tree :)

Welcome! Today I'm showing you guys around our very average, but minimal home. A few things to keep in mind: - I am a minimalist, my husband is not :) - We have two boys that enjoy playing with Legos which are out nearly all the time. - We are still renovating our home, as you'll see. Not all of it is perfectly aesthetic but home renovations are often a long journey! A friendly reminder that if...

With the dogs, what are you doing for flea and tick control or heartworm prevention? Asking because i spend a small fortune on my 3 mastiff breeds and would like a healthy but still effective alternative
Good luck. Not ready for that. I can do every other month
I totally understand! It seems really overwhelming if you haven’t done it before. Every other month is still a great idea! You got this!
Im doing a no buy this year as im buying my home.
Congratulations, that’s very exciting! Definitely a great time to reign in the unnecessary spending! Thank you for being here!
I've been wanting to do the no spend thing during school terms, then when school holidays come around I'd actually have money to go places and do activitiies with my child. It would mean that he would not think we are too poor for some fun things that cost money during the time he's home. I find it hard though because things come up and I often need to get things that I didn't plan for... like boos for college because we are rural so the library doesn't have what I need.
Not spending money so you can have money to do fun things during school breaks is such a great idea. It’s hard for EVERYONE right now 🙁 we’ve been really leaning into having friends over at our house or our kids playing at their friends houses. We take the dogs on hikes and other free stuff to get them out of the house/fill the time.

Your video is all about common sense, and common sense is in very short supply these days. I am deep into minimalism, frugality, and helping the environment as much as possible. Therefore, I welcome any youtuber that wants to promote those subjects. Keep up the good work.
Yes, common sense isn’t so common anymore - sadly. Thank you for being here!
Hey girl! Good to see you have a channel.
Wow! Hi Vickie! I haven’t talked to you in ages! How funny you found my channel! Hope you’re well! ❤
@SharieDeBord I am. I retired at the end of July as soon as I turned 62. I follow simple living and self sufficient channels. I was scrolling and said to myself, 'that looks like Sharie." And it was!!
Not legos because they are really expensive toys ! I decided that but different toys and later when legos are not expensive I buy them but around Christmas!!!
Unsubscribed to all the retailers that send me email announcements of their sales. Those big sales are so tempting to spend money!
Oh my gosh YES!!!!! I do this too! And make sure I’m not on their mail lists (Castlery and Article used to send me mailers all the time and the temptation was insane!)
Hey, very nice video! :-) This will make your no buy for scented plugs easier: they have toxic ingredients that are very bad for your health. After knowing that the urge to buy them is usually gone 😅
That is a good motivation! 🙂
Contentment is key.
@@Emily_CM sadly we’ve really lost the art of contentment. It’s crucial to a good life IMO 😉
@ This is very true.
That’s very true. I don’t want to have to say I bought Starbucks Frappuccino. You’re CORRECT ✅ 💯

@ You’re welcome.
Sounds like normal living to me lol what are you actually missing out on? You didn’t mention entertainment (concerts, sports, etc) so I’m guessing they’re off limits?
Entertainment stuff like concerts and sporting events I don't go to anyway so yes they're off limits but it's also not mentioned in the video because I don't go to them anyway, haha! The things I mentioned that are off limits are the things that I struggle with ... if it's not on the list it's not something I buy/attend anyway :) Hope that helps!
She not minimum because she got amazing legos and cool toys ! B
Legos are really expensive!!
you're telling me! haha!
@@SharieDeBord because I buy them too !! I know !! LOL
Honestly each family is different... whether you are a minimalist or you buy alot it is totally up to you.
Absolutely!
My daughter asked for a drone too.. I got her a sphere drone without the remote.. more user friendly :)
Drones are so much fun! It’ll be fun for you guys to do that together!
What did you get your kids for Christmas this year?
With dog toys, put away all but two right now. Then as those get destroyed, pull from the ones you’ve put away. It’s crazy how excited they’ll be to see their old ones as “new”. Kids toys, too.
Toy rotation for pets, I love this! I honestly never considered it but it's a great strategy! Thank you for sharing this!
Best way to stop impulse buying at grocery store is to use cash! Having to put something back (even just once!) makes you stick to price shopping for only what you set your mind to before going in!
YES! This is the best way to not overspend. I don't use cash because I get my employee discount + 5% more off when I use my target debit card but it would be a really good challenge to see if I would save MORE buy using cash. Thanks for this!
I am going to try No spend 2025 & making my lists. Your blog was very helpful. ❤
I’m so glad you found it helpful! I wish you the best in your 2025! We got this!
I am only going to do a no buy for January, but ideally I would do it for most of the year. I may even try no buy every other month and low buy the other months.
I would recommend making a list of what you can and can’t buy and the months you want to do it! Having a plan is key to being successful! Thank you for being here

Hi, I’m curious how you approach kid stuff like clothing and holiday gifts during a no buy? The vast majority of my impulse and superfluous purchases are on kid stuff.
Hi Mary Blake! I have two boys... one of which could care less about clothing but loves legos and one who would buy everything if he could (funny how different they are). With clothing, I buy them clothing when they genuinely need it. I typically shop secondhand as well, because that's much cheaper. I think not shopping regularly also helps. When you're out shopping, naturally you're going to come across things that are tempting so I eliminate the impulse by not shopping in store as often as I can (I just released a video about 20 things I quit and this was on that list if you'd like a more in-depth explanation :)) With gifts.... again, I have it sort of easy because my kids ONLY asked for legos this year. So, I made a budget and used an excel spreadsheet with a list of who is getting what and what the cost is. This completely eliminated any kind of impulsivity because I was able to do it all on-line. I promise you, our kids are happier with LESS stuff and MORE of our attention :) So, in sum... I only shop for clothing when they need it and stick to second hand (if I can't do second hand I do online) and I only buy them what they need (we have a one in one out rule we follow and the kids know this) and I make a very detailed plan for gifts which makes it easier. Since I know how much we're spending, I know that overspending will get us further from our goals and that helps me to not want to buy impulsive gifts. I hope this helps! Thank you for being here! Sharie
2025 will be my first no buy year. I really want to live with less and get away from clutter and things.
I love that mindset! I promise life gets better with less stuff! Good luck! I'm rooting for you!
Me too. I really want to change.
Good luck! You can do it!
I have done a no buy year. It is not sustainable for me, as during this period, many items got used up, I did a low buy before this. When I finally had to purchase new, I needed everything. So going forward, I am allowing myself to buy items when they need replacing. Preferably used - all things, except underwear! Maximum of 5 new items from a store per year. This works fine, also financially. It changes your mindset. What do you really need.
I am interested to see if my perspective on no-buys shifts after doing it for a full year. I think only buying these when they need replacing is a great way to live anyway! I agree that we really don't need much to live a good life, but dang our culture has fed us a lie that says otherwise hasn't it?!
I have not done a no-spend year before. But I think your approach will be the best for me too. I am what many would consider a "prepper". We maintain a stock of all essentials and extra food year round. I requested some personal items I am always tempted to spend money on for Christmas (beauty items, clothes, books) so hopefully I can be successful in not buying them later. 😅
@ asking for them for Christmas is a GREAT strategy! Smart move! You got this!
You didn’t talk about eating out
@@kathrynp7595 ah, yes… we don’t eat out. It’s just too expensive and I have celiac which makes it hard so that’s not something we do anyway. Hope this helps! Thank you for being here!
@ My daughter is Celiac too. We have to be really careful at eating only at complete Gluten free restaurants, luckily we live in San Diego so there are quite a few to choose from. We usually just eat out for special occasions
@ I live in GA and unfortunately we don’t have dedicated restaurants so it’s easier and cheaper to just eat at home 🙂
I completed a no spend year about 8 years ago, and I'm seriously contemplating another one in 2025! It was actually not so bad after a couple months. The habits have finally set in without much thought, and your friends/family have gotten used to the concept. My first no spend year showed me just how much money I wasted. Specifically, money wasted on mindless unfulfilling things. I became more mindful and specific. My reason for possibly completing another challenge in 2025 is to save and pay cash for a new car. I really don't want to finance ever again 😂
I love that you've already done a full no year spend! That is my motivation for wanting to do it in 2025 is to get the habits that LAST. Doing it for a month is great, but I've found that I tend to slip back into old habits so hoping a longer no spend will change that. I'm driving my paid off Nissan rogue and my favorite thing about it is that it doesn't have a payment LOL I dread the day she gives up on me!
Give yourself some Grace. Life is like a spiral, going up sometimes with the learning process comes failure, but success happens!
This is great wisdom, thank you!
Planning a week meal is a must. lol it’s going to be two months for me now and it’s been helpful with my budgeting
Ugh, I'm the WORST at meal planning. Between my husband not being home every night, my kids being picky and me having celiac it's really difficult! I need to get better at it though. I know it would greatly help our grocery budget (which is currently insane!).
I’m definitely going to be doing a no spend year for 2025. Plus I’m going to be start doing sinking funds for Christmas starting January so that’s the only additional thing. Again as everyone is saying, it is very overwhelming to just do a whole one year no buy year so I’m gonna try to do month by month. I’ll be tracking my spending and also just living a minimalist lifestyle ❤️❤️
Sinking funds are such a great tool! Really glad you're doing those! Especially for Christmas... it just makes the season so much less stressful! Realizing what you NEED and also what you actually value is really helpful in eliminating the excess. Once you get clear on your values, your finances tend to fall into place :) Thank you for being here!
I am also doing no buy year 2025. Have actually already started, I am not planning to buy anything in December and will continue from there.
December is a tough time to start a no spend! Well done! Can't wait to hear more about it as we go through the challenge together! Thank you for being here!
I encourage you to ween yourself off paper towels. I haven't bought any in years....no, I bought a pack of three about three yrs ago and still have 2 for emergency. Bad for the planet, expensive and unnecessary.
I would love to but I have trouble dealing with dog poop (we have a puppy) and bacon grease without paper towels. Id love to hear your thoughts on a work around for those!
I had just wrote down a note to self to be careful about spending in areas I have allowed spending ie., grocery and house hold essentials. I noticed I tend to feel justified to buy more, after all I didn't buy this or that. LOL 😅 After all I saved here and there! Watch out for subtle traps!
This is a great tip! I get sucked into sales too... "well it's 30%off!" but then I remind myself that it could be 100% off if I don't buy it. Hard to argue that logic haha!
Amazing video. I recently deleted all of my pages. I just stick to TH-cam. Social media is hurting us more than we like to admit.
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it! You nailed it on the head with social media hurting more than it helps. That's what I think about when that inkling of wanting it back comes... It never did me more good than harm. Sure, I found inspiration but I also found myself feeling lacking, wanting more, being discontent...I can find inspiration elsewhere that doesn't come with all those side effects :)
My husband and I started a 6 mo. low buy in October, going through April 2025! I allow replacements of items that break, charity, occasional (one per month max) books if I can't get it from the library. Among a few other "allowed" items. But I am loving it so far.
I See lots of people doing low-buys and I'm such an all or nothing person I don't think I could do it lol I would have to do a no buy :) Can you explain what your low-buy consists of? I'd love to hear! Thanks for being here!
@SharieDeBord sure! A low buy is a no buy with looser guidelines, in my opinion. I am one of those people who freezes up with black and white rules (I have OCD) so I need to keep rules gentler. So I don't do the ultra strict "rent, groceries, gas and nothing else". I allow some fun purchases like digital games and ebooks, because my low buy is motivated by climate concerns. But the low buy rules I have keep me from making impulsive purchases, and make me really think through any purchases I do make.
@@victoria9663 Funny how we're all different! I'm the opposite... if I don't have strict rules I will bend the heck out of them to justify a purchase haha! I'm glad you know what works for you!
@SharieDeBord haha! Glad we're both doing what we need to 😄
Be careful with scented stuff, you can trigger somebody's asthma with it. It's been happening to me because of people's perfumes, detergents, etc. They also give me terrible headaches. Smells are not something that only you can smell, it will affect people around you too. I love the fact that you mention cleaning with vinegar. You only need it mixed with an essential out and you can clean the whole house with it. The typical products you find in the supermarket are terrible for the environment and for us. Just like scented stuff (perfumes, plugs, candles...). The problem is that those scents are everywhere. It is hard to find a place to sit in trams, trains, busses without suffering from it because other people are wearing them. Please be aware of that. Have been reading on the topic and those "ingredients", even if you do not have any reaction to them now, can still cause damage. Also think about your dogs. Their sense of smell is a lot stronger than ours, it might harm them more than us depending on what we use. Maybe check out zero waste shops where you can buy a small amount of some organic, with less chemicals but still a nice smell. You might be disappointed at the beginning but if you keep using them, I can imagine that after a while you will realise how strong the other products are. Invest in a safety razor. You will have it forever and the blades only cost a couple of cents. I bought a pack 100 several years ago and I am gonna need to lives to use them up. For those using Q-tips: get a metal ear cleaner. I've had mine for the past 10 years and it is like new. Use less of what you have. Meaning that, if the commercial says you have to put toothpaste all over the toothbrush, only use a pea size amount. It is enough. Use half of the detergent when doing laundry. Unless laundry is extremely dirty, you really do not need that much. Travelling the past couple of years made me spend quite a lot, even when staying with friends/family. Flights/train tickets went from €50 to €200. Even hostels can be expensive depending on where you are going and some AirBnBs do not offer a kitchen. Eating out is way too expensive. I only go to the hairdresser twice a year to dye and cut. I should go every 2 months to get a cut so it can grow healthy. There are websites where you can listen to audiobooks in top quality for free if you know where to look. Great video!! Thank you so much for sharing 🙏🏻
Wow, I love the time and thought that went into your comment! I agree with so much of what you said! Especially how we become accustomed to the intense scent that our homes have when we use the plug ins… and it definitely takes a period of adjustment to get used to a lesser scent/no scent. And if you keep things clean there shouldn’t be a (bad) smell even if you don’t use scented things :) I tried a safety razor several years ago and it didn’t work well for me. I couldn’t get a close shave, I was so bummed! I recently heard about the metal ear cleaner… that is so cool! I need to look into it! OMG FINALLY SOMEONE WHO KNOWS YOU DON’T NEED TO USE EVEN 1/4 OF THE AMOUNT THE BOTTLE RECOMMENDS! Haha! I love that you know this too… so many people go off the bottle label and it actually does more harm than good. I have a down jacket that has to be washed with a special tech soap and before I wash it have to do a rinse cycle on my washer to get the regular detergent out (or else it can ruin the down in my jacket)… and when I do it there’s still suds in there even without soap! So even using the small amount that I use, I could still stand to cut back on! We definitely don’t need much at all! Again, thank you for this wonderful comment! Thank you also for being here! 🤍 - Sharie
@@SharieDeBord I am the one who is wowed 😱 Never thought anybody would read the comment since it turned out to be so long! And thank you for taking the time to reply. Exactly. Make sure things are clean and ventilate, there is no need for damaging substances in the air. There is plenty of that when we are outside, why damage our health at home too? What a pity that the safety razor did not work for you. Was it a good quality one? I once got a €15 one and that was money thrown down the toilet. Now I have one that costs more than double but it'll last. One thing I can recommend if it is something you are interested in is getting lasered. You can do it professionally, which costs quite a lot, but there are some home gadgets to be found that are good. I had the Philips Lumea back in 2010 and it did help. I didn't like the fact that it took 3 years to charge but what a difference. Now whenever I fly back to Spain I go to a professional since it is a lot cheaper than here in Germany. I use the razor because there are a couple of stubborn hairs that still come out. The metal ear cleaner that I have is this one: heikowild.de/ohrreiniger/ohrreiniger-edelstahl-70-mm.html. When I was a kid my mom used to use this one: www.apotheke.de/ohrenreiniger-mit-metallschlinge-12stk-pzn-03166451. This could be good too, but never tried one like this: www.ebay.com/itm/316016159723?_skw=metal+ear+cleaner&itmmeta=01JEBQ0APNQ8G0S8JXMFG1D2MA&hash=item499407ebeb:g:z9QAAOSwVAtnTEQd&itmprp=enc%3AAQAJAAAA8HoV3kP08IDx%2BKZ9MfhVJKlSVRY%2BVDEy3NzpYXxjNFcmQ5Wa6yXrgqgcjudwHQRYeJITAbkD23RJFZhjvfIerIyeuapavs%2FDnzsf3PkfUoZ6LtylZG5kGDokvGSoGnN0cEZnyhun7ItWUm8VDADCAKxMMg1jGjzM3TtMARMmlFcFXxQSu1jz7kb%2BnTsbZT%2BEmf2QseDM9cBy03vhK2LC9odytSiLY%2BiCyKdVzGDEF4gVKacoohP9PkUOVeZavRXL4qXV5KsGES3FzwtbRq2fyC6ss4aNbg5eB1VCcDXFosvhzvOSxWIm3abH%2BanmFNzfiA%3D%3D%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR8KrgffyZA The rest of the ones I've seen look scary 😄 Well, THANK YOU for being like that too. Idk why people are always so wasteful with everything. A ton of toothpaste on the toothbrush, half a bottle of detergent for one wash, water running while brushing your teeth or washing pots, then for that also humongous amounts of washing liquid... They might be cheap things but if you have to keep buying them regularly, you are wasting money. We get almost everything that has to do with home and cleaning from the zero-waste shop (I think you can tell I am a fan 😄). I bought detergent concentrate from there, it lasted 2 years. If you have kids might be less but you really only needed a teaspoon per wash and I had a 1 L bottle. Thank you again for taking the time to read and reply to the comment and for sharing. Let's try to make the world a better place. Let's thrive on capitalism's tears 😍
@@SharieDeBord Oh, you know what? Another thing that annoys me and that I try to avoid is eating out or going for drinks (mostly tea/coffee). The prices of food have gone up but the sizes have gone smaller. Also, I have to eat gluten-free. So when my friend paid her debt of inviting me for food, we went to this pizza place. The g-f dough used to cost €3. A couple of months ago it had gone up to 4 and when we ordered 2 weeks ago it had gone up to 5. I can't help it if I can't tolerate gluten. So no more pizza for me. That was ludicrous! I don't know how much it costs over there but I am a big tea drinker and I refuse to pay €4 for hot water with a few leaves. I have a thermos bottle, fill it up and go for a walk with it and friends. Or we drink at each other's houses. Or in the park. For that price I can buy enough loose tea leaves to drink one tea a day for months. That does not mean that I never go out for food or a drink but I have a limit of once a week for a drink and twice a month for food. If I am travelling I make more exceptions but at home? No, no. It might sound stingy but everything is so damn expensive... I am closer to being under the poverty line than I am to being rich so we have to be careful. Let's spend on things that really add value to our lives and mostly it is experiences, especially if you have the right people around you. At least that's been it for me. Monologue over 😄
