  • Defunct Games reviews Space Invaders Forever, available now on Switch and PlayStation 4.
One of two 2020 collections honoring the venerable shoot 'em up franchise, Space Invaders Forever collects three recent installments into one neat and tidy package on Switch and PlayStation 4. The compilation includes great games like Space Invaders Extreme and Arkanoid vs. Space Invaders, as well as the awful Space Invaders Gigamax 4 SE. The no-frills approach is disappointing and it probably could have used another game or two in order to justify the asking price, but Space Invaders Forever makes a strong case for why this franchise continues to be loved and cherished after all these years.

So glad I got this on PS4. That version actually lets you play Arkanoid Vs. Space Invaders on the TV. You use the DualShock 4 or 5's touchpad to control the paddle.

This game is addictive as hell lol. I got it physically for PS4, goes great with some herb and a beer 🍻 me and my wife actually beat gigamax, it really shines with the couch co-op, but it sucks solo. Good review 👍

This is a pricey, especially now when I see cool games for few euros on winter sale.
QOTD; I would like TurboGrafx compilation for modern systems like sega does mega drive collection,or SNES/N64 collection on cartridge for switch.

You know, if you went back to 1978 when Space Invaders first came out and told people about this, first off, they may be surprised that there are home consoles, but once that surprise has ended, they may be surprised that there are so many different ideas for such a basic game. Yet here we are. As for the question, maybe answer with another basic game that also had so many ideas and that is Pac-Man. I would also answer Zelda and Mario too, but the question with those is how far into the series would you go with a collection. Pac-Man is more of a safer bet.

    QOTD: Virtua Fighter definitely.
A Sonic Team Collection including Nights and Christmas Nights with all of the Saturn version extras, Burning Rangers, Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg.
    A Warp Studios Collection: D, Enemy 0 and D2
And for my personal satisfaction and happiness a Wolf Team collection and a digital pictures collection.

I wonder how the third game plays on the PS4?? Did they make it playable with the controller or did they add a different game. I must check!! ;)

QOTD: well...a virtua fighter collection would be nice, and no I'm not talking about the mega drive version for like the trillionth time neither, I'm talking about the arcade games, complete with rollback netcode, rare extras etc, tbh very fat chance of this ever happening considering sega always pulls the "usual suspects" routine with compilations

Virtua Fighter is the one fighting game franchise I have yet to get into of the 'big classics'. A new collection for me to get into it would sound great.
Though if you asked me I would do anything to bring back Bloody Roar in any way. That one is one of my faves

I had the Space Invaders Extreme duology at one time.. I’ll say they’re very good although you do lose your power ups a little too quickly.. Maybe I’ll wait for a sale..
I wouldn’t mind seeing a Frogger collection at some point being this was my first game in life.. They made quite a few of those.. Perhaps Mr Do and Galaga too.. Galaga Legions especially is great fun..

Sucks that Extreme 2 is not in this collection. That game did not touch Europe, and I really, really, REALLY want to play that one and bask in UFO-co's cuteness.
As for box set collections... Ghosts 'n' Goblins! That one needs a PC collection that includes stuff like the Gargoyle's Quest series and Ultimate Ghosts 'n' Goblins. I'd throw money at my computer's screen the moment Capcom announced it. It would be a no brainer money making move, but I guess Capcom right now is focused on Monster Hunter and that Megaman mobile game. *sigh*

Here's hoping that happens now that the pretty gorgeous new GnG title was announced. Mind you Capcom also has two Resident Evil titles in the oven, together what-ever-the-heck Pragmata is.

There was a great space invaders game on PS3... I want to say it's called space invaders infinite? It was awesome. Surprised it's not in this collection.

    QotD: Virtua Fighter.
I know I'm being unreasonable, but I've spent way too much time pretending Dead or Alive V+ on Vita was a Virtua Fighter game.
Also, imagine a Daytona USA collection, featuring both games and SCUD Racer?
Or, how about a Shining Force III collection?
Dammit, Sega, why can't you be as greedy as Nintendo? I want to pay too much for your old games on Switch too. (Like I did with your new M2 ports, few though they were.)

Sega has left so much money on the table over the last twenty years. They should have been porting and remastering and releasing compilation after compilation after compilation of their classic Saturn and Dreamcast games. I love the Genesis stuff and all, but it's the only era of Sega that they even acknowledge anymore. Had they kept some of these later franchises fresh and in people's minds, they would have had an easier time making new sequels and reboots.
It's also frustrating that they haven't released a new Virtua Fighter in well over a decade. They completely missed out on the new wave of fighting game popularity. A VF collection is literally the least they could have done. So frustrating!

QOTD; Commander Keen! I mean, especially after turning the franchise into a weird children's mobile game, we old-schoolers deserves something in compensation, right?

@@kitestar I actually wish they'd repurpose the art style and use it to create a new Keen title. I kind of liked the saturday-morning-cartoon take on the whole thing, but the game itself was more than a bit embarrassing.

Agreed. I would also point to something like Atari 50, which has a strong selection of great arcade shooters.
