  • Killer shrimp Conspiracy, Grafham Water, will this cause untold damage or
will it be the saving of some of our Trout waters. Could this invasive Shrimp be the saving of other
Trout waters that don't have a natural food source that we have in the South.
    Who knows !!!

christ, people shouldn't be deliberately contaminating waters with killer shrimp! The effect they have had on rivers in europe is devastating! For the sake of a bit more of a pull on your rod! Sickens me to think that fellow anglers would damage ecosystems like this! Are we not supost to love the countryside? You say it's not had a negative impact on the ecosystem of Grafham but quite frankly what do we know, we are not the scientists monitoring the place and the impact it has had in other places is massive. They eat fish eggs for a start... Although we should also care about the other insects and life that make up the freshwater ecosystems of this country. He have boxes full of representations of them for one thing.
Grafham has had a reputation for hard fighting fish for years, just read what Arthur Cove say's about them in 'My way with trout' all those years ago.I really don't think you should have this video up, sorry mate.

Thanks for your comments but I fear the genie is already out of the bottle! as I stated quite explicitly I do not think that contaminating other waters is a good idea or should be knowingly spread by anglers who think it may enhance there sport on there water's, the fact is they are in the water system and the truth is that we do not know what the long term effects of this evasive ,aggressive species is going to do the eco system at Grafham and other near by waters that have had a positive confirmation. You have to bare in mind this is not the first foreign visitor we have had at Grafham over the years, I remember when the Zander first started to show in Grafham and everyone said this would be the end of the reservoir! again it seems that these fish may be the saving of the place as back end of the season the spinning predator guys are queuing up to take boats out and putting money into the share holders coffers and holding off the probable inevitable any method scenario, I hope and pray that day never comes as I have seen what that did to Hanningfield reservoir in Essex. I know of anglers catching big Brown trout off the bank this year that are stuffed with Signal crayfish, oh another evasive species that has found its way into most water ways in the UK!!! shall I go on! Parakeets, muntjac deer the list goes on and on unfortunately Like it or not this is something that we have to deal with and live with, I think if you asked any angler at Grafham if these shrimps have had a detrimental effect on the fishing the answer would be no, there seems to be no detrimental effect on the buzzer hatches which I have on good authority apart from my own observations have not changed over the last few years, no I'm not a scientist but the first sign of adverse aquatic problems would show on the fish returns and condition! the catches are up and the fish quality is probably the best in the country as the 'Killer Shrimps' they sometimes feed on when the buzzer hatches in the main water stop as winter approaches are high protein food and keeps them super charged even in the depths of winter including the course fish and wild life that feed on them also! I would never dream of taking this video down as we all should be aware of how easy it is for evasive uncontrollable species to be spread, I first fished Grafham with my father in 1969 and trust me have fond memories of Grafham in its early days and had the privilege to meet and fish with the late great Arthur Cove as well as Dick Walker then Bob Church and Dick Shrive ,thinking men who shaped the sport as we know it today, there innovations and foresight are still in use in 2020. Think you need to look at the bigger picture but appreciate and acknowledge your comments

I think I am looking at the bigger picture and you are looking at it solely from the perspective of stocked trout fisheries .Parkaeets have effected song bird populations in London, Muntjac effect native flora, grey squirells... seen a red one recently? Mink bringing water vole populations to near extinction, harlequin ladybirds reducing native ladybird polualtions by 50 %... the list goes on in less obvious species I am sure such as native shrimp. What concerns me most is the prospect of the killer shrimp expands beyond Grafham and other reservoirs into the river systems, which it is likely to do the more it is spread. Trout reservoirs are obviously stocked and so fish numbers will not be effected, it is another food source for them but they do not face the problem of having to survive being an egg. The great ouse for example which I fish for coarse fish, that could be hugely effected. What will the effect be on coarse fish numbers, on the insects that make up the ecosyetm of the ouse for example that have evolved over thousands of years? Even if you think anecdotally that it will be fine, it is important to realise we do not have the facts or scientific knowledge to really know what is going on and we should be worried about the possible effects as they could happen. You may say predator fish are not stocked at Grafham and nor are browns and these are massive at the moment. Is it not reasonable to assume that the bump in food provided to the stocked trout is making the pike bigger and the shrimp making the browns bigger in the short term but the long term effect will that less fish will be growing on and so populations a awhole will fall long term? You may have a few specimen fish but few and far between.
We also have to remember that Grafham is its own particular habitat and ecosystem. From a game fishing perspective what will the effect be if the killer shrimp make their way into rivers holding trout? They eat the insects that make up the trouts diet and the ecosystems. Declines in mayflies, and other insects would be extremely depressing in its self. But they also eat fish eggs so surely this could have a huge effect on the wild trout populations?
I like your vids and you are a very good angler but my concern is that by saying things like, 'Could this invasive Shrimp be the saving of other Trout waters that don't have a natural food source that we have in the South, ' encourages a relaxed attitude to this problem, meaning some anglers may pay less attention to the check clean and dry policy than they already do and inadvertently spread it, let alone do it deliberately which I appreciate you have condemned. The attitude is already relaxed you may say... well unfortunately, I agree with you there.

@@jhgvyjbuighfgjh Great debate, but as previously mentioned truly believe that Pandora's box has been opened and there is no way of shutting the dam thing!!! I do believe that the pair of us are singing off the same Hymn sheet really, we are plagued in Hertfordshire by Parakeets that evict woodpeckers from there nesting sights, Muntjac deer breeding all year round and being a general nuisance rather than disrupting the countryside's equilibrium or though a friends dog was killed by one recently but more down to the owner than the beast itself.
I think the signal cray fish are more scary than the Shrimp problem, but you are right we must try not to let this shrimp or any evasive or foreign species get into any waterway if we can possibly help it! but as the world becomes smaller and people think its ok to unwittingly realise strange creatures into our countryside with no concept of the damage they are potentially afflicting on the fragile environment we all share.
I remember the early days at Grafham when they still used to net out the coarse fish and kill all the big pike , the effect was a massive explosion of small jack pike, I used to catch 30-40 a day and you had to kill them or you were in trouble with the bailiff, basically you cant change mother nature you can help her along. I have seen massive changes in the reservoirs over the years with the stocking policies' having to change due to the Cormorant problem bigger fish going in so they are not swallowed by this evasive aggressive sea bird but we have had to adapt and change our way of thinking to accommodate this killer of trout and coarse fish stocks! wow leads onto another debate altogether regarding the lack of fish stocks in the sea!!! lol
thanks for watching our small films I'm sure we will meet on the bank somewhere tight lines for the coming season, make sure you have those killer shrimp patterns in your box!!!lol

We fished it late October and the fishing was magnificent. Mostly on the snake but no doubt the fish are packing on weight due to the shrimp.
    Proper slabs the fish where

As a fisherman the biggest thrill is the take. Accepting it requires more patience and potentially harder camera positioning, this is what most fisherman want to witness

Thanks for your comment Roy, I agree the take and anticipation of the take is the biggest thrill but difficult to capture on camera fully as I would say its 80% feel 20% visual if you check out the first Grafham killer shrimp video we have some good takes on there to view! hope your season went ok even in these odd times
