Experience is so valuable and why it is so important to share. I learned most this the hard way over many years. I hope to simplify the process for viewers
@VinylVillageGarage thx for being so unselfish! Your depth of knowledge shows, in that you are able to produce a video incorporating your many hard-earned techniques. THX Again!
As you have learned to get the best or gooder fitment of replacement panels you have to get creative and make them go where you want. But that extra effort pays off in the end
Appreciate it, many attempts and learning the technique. This is why it’s a great idea to do some test welds and tweaking the adjustment of your welder before welding on the final body parts. Typically you can pick up quick especially since it’s a test panel so the stress of messing up isn’t the same.
Excellent technique. It's lined up better than factory 👍 FYI safety moment: The ends of '69 Judge trunk spoilers where they meet the quarters will do some not so nice things to fingers if they're in the way when the trunk is closed.
I like the way you work Jon, sometimes a big hammer is the right tool. I just finished welding in a floor patch (about 2ft square). I've been mig welding for years, but I've never stitch welded sheet metal. Welding 8 feet at about 3/8" at a time, is too much like work. "Your Honor" the goat is looking good!
Sheet metal is its own monster for sure. In learned how to weld sheetmetal before I ever welded thicker stuff like 1/4-3/8” and so on. The heavier stuff is way more forgiving to a continuous bead.
Good to know. I fight with the idea short and simple or long form. Most of the TH-cam channel experts say short because of attention spans. Not sure I agree.
Hello 👋 buddy, you are the man. The GTO is looking amazing and I love the technique for the plug Wells I use it all the time you are making me want a 1969 GTO next for the collection
Another great job. Agreed the numbers on the panels are individual part numbers. The stamping house may have hundreds of parts they make and these part numbers are also used in the assembly of the car.
I had the exact same problems with the quater on a 68 chevelle and did the exact same thing and all was well until I put the quarter eztentions and light and tail panel cover on and i was 1/4inch short
They both measure at 17”. I can’t say what they came from. I can will say is the guy I bought the car from was a huge gto fan and part collector so good chance that they belong to a gto
I used a little spray adhesive to reattach the original material. Now if it was missing or turned hard and brittle it should be entirely replaced it’s about 1/2” gap that needs filled with an expanding foam that stays soft and pliable when dry. If it gets hard might cause ripples or bumps in the sheet metal
just curious, will you put some sort of seam sealer or something between the quarter and the inner support bracket by the outer wheel tub? or will it just float?
Mine still had the factory foam in good shape so I left it as is. Now if it was missing I would replace it with a soft material that doesn’t harden up. If it gets hard I think it might cause ripples in the sheet metal.
It is not out of the question. The lower inner edge and lower lip is rusted out too. I repaired one like this for my lemans 20 years ago. Repop and food original ones didn’t exist.
I agree a part number for sure but does it have meaning like year, model and so on. I am almost certain the numbers don’t match from one 1969 Firebird to another 1969 Firebird they change the letters and numbers for some reason. Again not that vital to solve just an observation
As far as the original cars, yes all individual parts should all match, unless there was an engineering change. Such as all left hand fenders should carry the same part number. Rh will have a different part number. Some OEMs would use odd numbers on LH and even on Rh. Not all OEMs followed that, but Ford for example did.
Hey Jon. Is there a way I can contact you? I have a friend who passed, I’m trying to help his family sell his cars. One of them is a 1967 Firebird. I am a Camaro guy and have never messed with a firebird and there some questions I have about the wiring harness for the lights. Also, hoping you can help me judge the value. Thanks in advance and hope you can help.
As the owner of an A body and a Firebird this channel is the best, thanks Jon!
Right on! You da man. Thanks for watching too.
The more gooder goat is coming along very nice. Great work as always.
More gooder goat 😎
You made that quarter fit like a glove! Fine work.
Name of the game, making what is available work and look right.
Great vid! You're really showing a lot of experienced-based techniques, that most of us home folks wouldn't think to try. THX!

That quarter turned out amazing. Really enjoy the little tips and tricks on putting these cars back together. We appreciate you sharing them.

Fantastic work Jon!
Thanks!
Nice work. Welds look amazing.

You've done a great job so far. Thank you for the info.
Appreciate that. I wish this car was done and drivable. So looking forward to that day.
Cool trick on the welds. Just started on my quarter yesterday so I may try it. Thanks for the tip!
Right on, happy to help! Good luck.
Looking good!
Thank you. Could not be happier with it.
Nice work
Thank you
Excellent technique. It's lined up better than factory 👍

Thanks for the heads up. That would not be fun. Sounds like you are speaking from experience
very nice fitment Jon. I think i said this before, I really like your plug welds.
Thanks,
They work great and quick clean up too
Excellent tutorial on the quarter panel alignment and install.
Appreciate that!

Another awesome job ....good content... enjoying the build ...keep up the great work....
Thanks......🔧🔧👍
It’s been fun doing something other than a bird. The techniques still apply just a little different
Looking great! Happy New Year🎉🎉!
Happy new year to you as well
Top notch work 1/4 came out very well thank you for the videos
Anytime. Happy to share the process
Another gd one. Love the long vids.
Good to know. I fight with the idea short and simple or long form. Most of the TH-cam channel experts say short because of attention spans. Not sure I agree.
Awesome 💪 😎
Thanks
Damn that looks fantastic buddy!!!!
Thanks brother!
Very nice work!
Thank you. 🙏
coming along well. I am not sure about the others that sell those panels but i am sure they will still have challenges to over come as well
Just about every panel no matter what brand needs some type of tweaking for optimal fit.
Hello 👋 buddy, you are the man. The GTO is looking amazing and I love the technique for the plug Wells I use it all the time you are making me want a 1969 GTO next for the collection
I will keep an eye out for a GTO for FGG
Great job. I got new trunk gutters and front/rear window repair pieces for my car from rust replace. They fit great with little trimming.
Very cool! I will look into that
As always you make it look so easy!
It really isn’t that bad. Prep work and test fitting is the key
Another great job. Agreed the numbers on the panels are individual part numbers. The stamping house may have hundreds of parts they make and these part numbers are also used in the assembly of the car.
All the more reason to keep that stamp when it’s visible intact.
Happy new year 🎉🎉🎉
Yes it has been a great year! Happy new year to you too.
When are you going to have your 'show' on the Motortrend Channel?? I believe a LOT of viewers would enjoy it, and really learn !!
Wow that would be something for sure! Of course it is free to watch on TH-cam anytime right now 😎 Thank you for watching!
I had the exact same problems with the quater on a 68 chevelle and did the exact same thing and all was well until I put the quarter eztentions and light and tail panel cover on and i was 1/4inch short
Well dang the luck. I will be test fitting the bumper and tail lights before painting for sure then.
WOW. Nice Job, Judge Jon 😉 A favor to ask. I noticed the front springs in the trunk. Can you take a measurement of the length of one? Thanks!
They both measure at 17”. I can’t say what they came from. I can will say is the guy I bought the car from was a huge gto fan and part collector so good chance that they belong to a gto
Thanks Jon for measuring the springs.
Do you have to reapply adhesive (liquid nails for autobody) to that horizontal plate that is mid-way up the panel?
I used a little spray adhesive to reattach the original material. Now if it was missing or turned hard and brittle it should be entirely replaced it’s about 1/2” gap that needs filled with an expanding foam that stays soft and pliable when dry. If it gets hard might cause ripples or bumps in the sheet metal
Looking great, Jon...
What about that padded brace above the wheelhouse? Are you able to access, and glue that from within the trunk?
Plenty of room from inside the trunk to get the foam in place
just curious, will you put some sort of seam sealer or something between the quarter and the inner support bracket by the outer wheel tub? or will it just float?
Mine still had the factory foam in good shape so I left it as is. Now if it was missing I would replace it with a soft material that doesn’t harden up. If it gets hard I think it might cause ripples in the sheet metal.
Repop trunk lids suck. I would get me some household vinegar, shop towels and saran wrap and remove all that rust on the trunk lid.
It is not out of the question. The lower inner edge and lower lip is rusted out too. I repaired one like this for my lemans 20 years ago. Repop and food original ones didn’t exist.
Maybe. Judge......"mental"
Very cool. Judge mental most days and temperamental on others.
👍
Appreciate it.
👍👍👍✌️
Thanks!!
👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you!
The Vinyl Goat or Village Goat ?
Village goat lol. 😂
Those numbers are part numbers for the individual parts.
I agree a part number for sure but does it have meaning like year, model and so on. I am almost certain the numbers don’t match from one 1969 Firebird to another 1969 Firebird they change the letters and numbers for some reason. Again not that vital to solve just an observation

Rh will have a different part number. Some OEMs would use odd numbers on LH and even on Rh. Not all OEMs followed that, but Ford for example did.
The part number are based on Pontiac engineering drawing numbers not date stamped.

Definitely see what I can do. Vinylvillagegarage@ gmail.com
How about “Here come da judge”
Perfect!
Taillight
Yeah need to test fit that
Lot of stuff in the car eh?
Yes all the extra parts to this car. I don’t plan to unpack it. I will be moving soon to a new place and need to pack the cars to go with me.
@@VinylVillageGarage Looking forward to it.Again I luv seeing Goat being dun instead of yet another SS.
