You restored full functionality to a 350 four stroke street legal trail bike. It was a dead bike, destined to be scrapped and parted out, and now you can tell by the sounds it makes that it loves you, and it's so happy to be alive. There can be no higher calling in life, and I salute you, sir!
This is giving me flashbacks. As a wee lad with a 50cc scooter, I asked a local mechanic why it was randomly cutting out for a split second every few moments at full throttle. Without even looking at it, he told me the crankshaft seals were leaking, leading to a lean condition and requiring an engine rebuild, which, of course, he'd gladly undertake for a fee. Not having the money, I set out to do my first engine rebuild. Long story short, I messed it up and ruined the crankshaft, and while diagnosing it I noticed the fuel tap was open... And dripping one drop of fuel every few seconds. Still haven't quite forgiven the mechanic, that was my grandpa's moped...
I have a Sachs Madass with and 140 Pihrana engine that was having the problem of momentarily cutting out at Max RPM. It turned out to be the aftermarket fuel cap being badly designed (or manufactured) and the air vent being blocked by the tank seal, thus reducing the fuel flow to the engine...
You have such a way with words. Makes for some great intros and, in the case of this video, outro as well: "Because of all my failures, I'm calling this a complete success!" And the intro for this one was one of the best! "I gonna give you a quick overview of this episode: I make a lot of mistakes… I spend money I didn't have to… and I'm really happy about it!" I love it!
Someone gave me one of these bikes three weeks ago and my friends made me take it apart already. Thanks for making this video. Definitely going to help me put it all back together.
The guy that bought it was talking about new tracks and getting it on the road, so I think its in for a full restoration now. That's better, I would have just started modifying it or something...
I bought mine as a dirt model in '90 when they came out and I'm still riding it today though I converted it to a DualSport and have a plate (no small feat in Kalifornia!) so ''Suzi'' goes everywhere. With the 3.5 gallon tank she will go 90 miles before hitting reserve! 34 years and never going to sell her.
a bit overfilled but from the FB group on DRs and my personal experience with my 96' SE I recommend either ride it for a few mins or let it idle for 2-3 mins then check the oil. As you stated, the oil won't go through the frame to the motor without that pump moving oil. That is also what my Clymer manual for the DR says to do. Beyond all that, I love the videos and great to see some new 350 content, keep it up brother get that tractor running and it'll run forever. (with GOOD oil maintenance)
Great video, LB! I have a 2003 KTM 640 Adventure which has the same oil in the frame situation. It allows for greater capacity, which is good for oil change intervals but, as is the same with the Suzuki, the oil changes are time-laborious operations. And I need to "burp" the system to be sure there is no air anywhere in the line. Once you do it a few times it goes faster but still, not as easy as a wet system. The trade-off is a higher performance bike. Thanks for the hacks on your carb and air flow... and the subtle humor thrown in.
I absolutely LOVE how you overcome difficulties. I LOVE how you always try to do things cheaply and simply. I LOVE you sense of humour and indomitable spirit !
Quickly becoming my favorite channel. I appreciate that you don’t have to resort to “locker room “ humor or offensive language to keep viewers entertained, the content it entertaining enough!
saw a facebook post today about peoples internet show that they like involving cars, trucks, etc... Scrolled thru and saw the usually. Didn't see yours, so of course I had to put it in the list of comments. Love the low buck approach to your work! I can relate!
Theres a Different Throttle for the Non-CV carb, for sure- if your buying one, get whats called a 1/4 - turn throttle, they have a much larger drum area to pull more cable, with less twist of the wrist, you dont have to buy the Suzuki one, unless the switches are built in, in which case just buy the one for the regular Slide type pumper Carb like youre using now- Replacing that CV-Carb (Constant Velocity) was the best performance mod you could do, other easy stuff would be less restrictive exhaust and maybe a cam, but then youre talking pricey, Me and my Buddy build full race DRz400's which is the next size bigger brother to your DR350 there - Love your videos dude!
The valve that's higher on the right side is used for "main" operation, the valve on left is used as an "aux" tank to get you home. I know those tanks as "desert" tanks , way more fuel than stock
Great fun watching you fail your way to success! I just picked up a DR350 a couple weeks ago for BEANS, and luckily it just needed a complete fuel system cleaning! You did give me a light bulb moment though with the clogged petcock valve. I noticed fuel was coming through on mine, but it kept bugging me that it didn’t seem like much. So I pulled it off and disassembled it, and sure enough, just like yours it was so clogged with crap that it’s a wonder anything was able to get through. I also disassembled the carb and cleaned it, oiled the O-ring gaskets and put it back together and it doesn’t leak, lol.. The fun is definitely in seeing ‘if this works’ and then either figuring out why it didn’t, or having that moment of victory when it does! Two busted knuckle thumbs up!
I know this is old by now, but a couple of fork seals and fresh proper fork oil (5W fork oil ratings are different than engine oil, so you may want to try 30w if you like, but oil level is critical, it regulates the air above it, higher oil quicker compression buildup, lower oil, more air less compression buildup, some trial and error on this goes a long way). That carb you got totally changes the character of the bike, but increases fuel consumption by a large percentage. On dirt throttle response is critical, on the highway you want a CV carb so you don't look like a novice rider :) But who rides a dr350 on a hwy? The options back then were an anemic xr250, a Yamaha ttr250, and a Honda 600/650. This filled the gap between sleepy and a tank. There was also the klx250/300 water cooled bikes, much more fun on dirt and great power with a PWK. Then everything exploded into race bikes that needed 3hr of work for every 2hr of riding. Again DRz400 filled the gap. But the DR350R with kick start was king, only not road legal out of the box. It was my pick back then, carrying a 2t KTM in a truck to go riding gets old the older you get.
What a great place to ride. When I was young, I had a Husky 400 - 8 speed. Just enough horsepower and torque to kill me. Now that I am 79, I have a bicycle I no longer ride. Life does that to some of us. I enjoyed your ride.
In regard to the Side-cover access cover for the crank turning, you really want to undo the cover when the bike is warm, as that Allen key is a dodgy fit... And I liked the 80% Nitrogen refence...
Haha! love the fact that what you thought were failure’s actually had a positive effect on the outcome, that’s a great morel for this story and all life’s up’s and downs, I’m gonna start reminding myself of that! PS. Always lots of fun watching low buck garage👍
Comes out to the yard later in the week, sees all the dirtbike tracks and thinks: -'Dang it! Them dang kids have been here ripping up my whole yard with their bikes again!...No wait, that was me...' LOL!
Damn you're funny! Memorable lessons...spending money when not needed. Cracking these comments on all your videos, and not smiling or laughing is THE BEST!. Thx man.
Hi mistakes are learning steps and people who never make mistakes never make anything as for the oil for it to come out when you were checking the valves suggests it’s been overfilled. There is a bit of an issue checking the oil on dr 350s I was told by a mechanic to go for a ride then stop turn of the engine wait about 20/30 seconds then check the oil .Great channel
Those universal boots don't hold up as well and can be prone to air leaks because they are designed to the point that the holes are almost a 1/3rd blocked of access. I had to modify the crap out of mine such as drill/file reliefs on the main body of the boot just to get allen head bolts to seat correctly. When I get my DR I think I will go with the over priced version or make my own. Thanks for making this video I can't get enough DR350 content. PS: I had that same battery it didn't last long for me.
run for 3 mins, off for 3 mins (to let any bubbles disappear) bike upright remove dipstick wipe off oil then dip the oil without screwing the dipstick in check oil is covering cross hatch marks on dipstick. use jaso ma or ma2 4t motorcycle oil to ensure it's compatible with wet clutches.
Nice old 4 stroke, love the trail and scenery. Often overlooked when rebuilding an older bike are the petcocks, they can get very crusty. Definitely need to lubricate the chain and adjust the clutch throw.
Oh *WOW* James! 😧 I didn't know you sold one of your half tracks! Nice works fixing the bike up. Looks like it runs great and has plenty of power, that's for sure! 🙂👍 I'm glad the shifter was just bent 🔧

I love your “that’ll do” attitude or in Australian, “she’ll be right mate”. Sad to see the half track go after all that work and it was the project that got me interested in your channel, now I’m hooked but if it’s getting the full resto treatment then its better than remaining a tow truck. One last thing, no one in Australia drinks Fosters cause it tastes like dog piss😂. Cheers Stuart 🇦🇺
Thanks! I still have one half-track left, you'll see a lot of this one. And no matter how Fosters tastes, the cans are the perfect size for a radiator overflow catch can!
I really enjoy this channel. It reminds me of my Dad and I working together to keep old used cars and or motorcycles running when I was a kid. Only we knew about 1/4 of what you know, perhaps less. But we were probably as low buck as you because we had very few bucks. Way to go!
i had a drz400 with a motor that needed to be rebuilt. there's a check valve in that motor covered by the clutch cover at the bottom of the crankcase. this is what caused me to be completely unable to reliably check the oil level as well - since the check valve was bad/stuck. didn't see anyone in the comments mention this.
Found your channel when searching for DR350 carb fixes. Really enjoyed watching you go over your bike! Gave me some ideas on what to do and where to look for issues with mine. Thanks for posting this content!

Thanks for making this video. Definitely going to help me put it all back together.
It makes my arms sore just watching you ride through ruts and sand. Just remembered how much of a workout off road cycling was...
Glad you chose to repair it.
I hope your Halftrack has a good new home. Sorry to see it go, but I guess it enables more 'fun' doing other projects.
The guy that bought it was talking about new tracks and getting it on the road, so I think its in for a full restoration now. That's better, I would have just started modifying it or something...
@@LowBuckGarage ...and you still have one bare bones halftrack to play Dr Frankenstein with.
Good job bro. Always love watching people overcoming obstacles that most would give up on..love seeing old things come back to life.🙂
For the Carburator Hose: You could try to use a hotgun and bent&squeeze it to fit;-)
