Ik I said I wouldn't make another Macross video right after, but I've had a MASSIVE 1k sub special in the works that's taking so long I had to make this as a breather.

Love the video. Disappointed you didn’t point out the infamous beer can missile Easter egg

Awesome videos on the OG Macross. You should have more views and subscribers. I blame Harmony Gold for blocking the expansion of the Macross series in the West, while not doing much with Robotech, that has its merits on opening the gates for anime in the US, at least.

Forgot to mention the orange trainer fighter is the reference to the tv intro fighter for Hikaru getting shot during first alien attack.

So glad this movie stays only with Big West / Macross universe

    This is really cool!
I’m currently doing a fan translation patch of the ps1 tie in game and it’s been fun doing the dubbing and getting to know the material
It even has original animation that showcases the opening invasion

That's sick! I'd love to check it out when it's done, I honestly haven't touched any Macross games (I do want to do a video on Macross 30 though)

May be blasphemy to some, but I kinds see the Macross: Do You Remember Love? movie to be THE "canon" Macross, and not the OG TV show. And all the sequels afterwards spring from that movie... 😅

@saiberunato your right all the Macross Sequels follow Macross Do You Remember Love. The Aesthetics, Songs, Storylines, Ship Designs, Valkyries, Uniforms etc.

The problem is you called it "the definitive rendition of the Marcross Tale." That's where you go too far. Since I was a 14 year old back in 1984, there is a reason I have to say "no!"
I do enjoy DYRL. But it feels so much more rushed and the fact is they cheat in character development by subtly expecting you to know these characters because you watched all 36 original episodes.
But the fact is the war is essential to understand Macross precisely because in 1984, we all thought that was our future. Japan especially (my dad worked for Sharp Corp and that's why I got to immerse myself in the culture) feared the return of the devastation 18:14 of 1945. We really weren't sure if we were human or Zentradi, about culture and love or just war and destruction. The Macross worldview can't be fully appreciated without weaving that into the type of person Rick and Lisa are, while Minmei's naïveté about war and focus on a dream stands in contrast. All those things are lost by the rushed setup (and payoff) we get in DYRL.
It's not a bad cash grab, I mean movie. It's a very different take. But I just think calling it the "definitive take" is both missing the larger context and the reason why Macross remains so beloved as, along with Space Battleship Yamato, the two defining anime of the pre-1990s anime world, and why almost no one remembers this trimmed down version.

I agree entirely. I love DYRL, but nothing beats the original tv series.

So she gets rejected, then slapped, and then agrees to go out and sing. She finds her mark, clears her throat, and then proceeds to sing an off-key rendition of My Humps. The human race burns to the tune of a Black Eyed Peas cover while she extends both middle fingers.
(Honestly, that feels more like how Hideaki Anno would have approached the ending of the movie.)

It's a good movie, but back then I hoped this would be Part 2, would've been nice to see the 1st half of the invasion with this quality.
This being said, this movie, if I remember right, isn't canon & is canon at the same time, as it's a "movie" in the original tv-show's timeline. It's like us watching a movie about WW2, like "A Bridge too far" as an example.
"Macross 2" isn't canon, I think about everyone treats this as fan-fiction, though it's fine.
"Macross Delta" is the definitive sequel/continuation, 'nough said.
"Macross 0" is kinda good, but people seem to not like it.
Don't know the rest after that, which might change, when they finaly release it on DVD/BR...

Well in terms of the ones you are missing out on, there is "Plus", "7" and "Frontier" all of which take place inbetween the original series and Delta.
