      Not so good. The first week the cats were very upset with our puppy barking & whining while she adjusted to her kennel. They had the freedom to go downstairs where they felt safe in the mater bedroom. We are on week 2, cats are hanging outside a bit more observing the puppy (Chug). However when the puppy sees the cats she bounces over to them to investigate & they his & go away. We don’t pen our puppy outside because we have a fenced yard & she gets the best exercise with out a pen. Our puppy is probably 1.5lbs much smaller than the cats so we are careful to make sure she is kenneled when we are sleeping or not home. I want to know how to get the puppy to not chase the cats since they share the outdoor area. The cats are free to leave the area but the puppy is not.

    My thought process is that doing it the “right” way takes multiple weeks. I didn’t want to let my puppy keep growing and wanted her to be introduced to my cats while she was as small and clumsy as possible. My cats taught her their boundaries within seconds.

      I have just gotten a 13 week old shepherd. He is bigger than the cats but they are all dog friendly. So far he is too hyper but I want them to all tolerate before he is too much older. Going to get an adaptil collar now. He is great with people, other dogs and goats.

    Going and getting a puppy with my wife today. We're both in our 30s with no kids so this is a total life changer in a way. The only thing we worry about is our cat has a tendency to be a little anxious so we're afraid of the first interactions. Thanks for the tips!

    Crate training is also helpful for the puppy. Cats don't respond to boundaries very much, but puppies do learn and don't get to have freedom of the house like the cat does. Let the cat notice their crate and scent first before face to face interaction (if ever)

The one thing that bothers me is my Cat Poppy is very nervous and runs away upstairs when someone visits or rings the door bell She will only come down when they have gone she has always been like this when I first brought her home she is three years old brought home as a Kitten and what worries me is the chance she will run away and not come home ? Glad to have found this video 💙 luckily our 3 cats have done well with adult dogs but it's obviously different than a puppy, which my fiance and i are getting one this week that a costumer from his job needed to home since they didnt have the space; so we're just as excited as we are nervous so this video helped ease a lot of anxiety knowing we're already heading in a good direction (started scent swapping somewhat early, the current owners of pup gave us a blanket he loves and we gave him toys and a blanket our cats use so they have a slight familiar idea) and already getting gates to set up in the cats' safe rooms (we dont like litter and food in the same room but still quick access to get to either one) so the pup wont stress them out too much. This was a great video and im very glad to have learned more and know we're hopefully on the right track! 💙 also is there any specifics for a chihuahua/pomeranian mix when going about this since they arent big pups or any video/channel reccomended? Would love to know!

    Thinking of getting a puppy. I am nervous because I have a cat. He's still rather young (a little over a year) but set in his ways. I absolutely want to get a puppy. I am nervous about it tho. I don't want to get a dog that won't be compatible with my cat. I am okay with them just tolerating each other, I just don't want an injured pet. This is alleviating some of my fear.

    I have some questions that I wonder if you could answer... I’ve been begging my parents for years to get a puppy and it seems to finally be working. The only problem is that my neighbour who lives a couple doors down has a cat who visits our house everyday. (The owner knows and she’s more than happy with her coming in) Seen to the fact that I don’t have any supplies for the cat, what do you suggest I do to introduce them carefully and calmly? My next door neighbour has a big dog which she doesn’t really like. Will she feel the same way about my puppy? I was planning on getting a cavapoo as people in my family have allergies and I believe they can get on with cats but I’m not 100% sure. Fudge (the cat) is also a little blind and doesn’t trust many other cats like her sisters so I’m a little worried... She comes into my kitchen and that’s the limit for her. I have a glass door between the kitchen and the living room. Would it be a good idea to use that to introduce them? Having the cat in the kitchen and the dog in the living room? My aunt is also getting a dog (hopefully my dogs sibling) and I’m just so nervous about what I would do if she hates both of the dogs as we would need to look after my aunts dog as she goes away a lot. Could you advise me? I’m so sorry there is sooo many questions I just want to ensure that I am introducing them in the right way❤️

    I've been looking into getting a puppy but I live alone and probably wouldn't be able to stay home full time for more than 1 week (2 if I get really lucky) after bringing it home. Some people say if you practice being alone well during that time it'll be fine and others say you shouldn't leave a puppy alone for longer periods of time until they're at least 6 months old. Do you have any tips how I could make that work? And sadly a crate is not an option for me as it's actually illegal here to leave your dog in one unless you're transporting the dog or you've been recommended to do so by a vet.

    I have had a multi-dog household for many years now. Most of the time with two dogs, but there have been times when there were three for a while. My current dogs are 8 years old and eight months old. The older one is a gentle soul but the younger one is fearless. The puppy is now about the same size and weight as the older one and games of chase in the garden are not balanced. The pup is always the chaser and the older dog the chased one. They both seem to enjoy this game, but I would like to see the younger dog being chased once in a while.

I don’t want to have to keep the cats locked away from us in a spare room for a month (aside from training sessions) if it takes that long since it doesn’t seem fair for the cats. My case is a bit different. So we took a baby puppy - about 2 months old, and we have a cat in the yard, which by the way currently have two kittens to feed. (Yeah, probably not the best time to get a puppy, but it was rescued from the street)
    So the issue is the cat, it is very agressive toward the pup, we try to keep them away from each other, and of course the pup stays far away from the place where the kittens are hidden away, but as soon as the distance between the cat and the puppy closes, the cat jumps to attack the pup.
    So it's like we have to put a leash on the cat so it does not jump on the puppy instead of the other way around like the usual case. But of course we can't do that... Since she would feel even more threatened and become even more agressive. So we keep them far away from each other and try to shorten the distance very slowly. I feel like there is some progress, but at moments it seems like there is no progress at all.
    Could I maybe put something with the scent of the puppy near the kittens to the cat get used to it? Is this a good idea or a terrible one...

    hey can you talk more about managing barking and growling. I know these are typical dog behaviours but there has to be things to do or not do to not encourage growling and barking. My puppy (5-6 months) has suddenly started barking and growling right at me.

    • @HowToTrainADreamDog
      @HowToTrainADreamDog  3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      When it comes to puppy barking, make sure you aren't accidentally rewarding your pup by looking at them or talking to them when they are barking. Do not yell out “quiet” while they are barking. Since puppies don’t understand what the word quiet means, you are actually just giving attention (negative attention still counts for most pups) and reinforcing the bark. You will also teach your pup to either ignore the word quiet because we are overusing it, or that it means to bark, if the timing happens to be just right. Remember puppies don't understand the words we speak until each word is taught to them through a one-to-one association with the behavior we want it to mean.
      During times that your puppy is barking at you for either attention or something they want, take away all forms of attention. This includes eye contact, speaking to them, touching them, etc. Wait until the exact moment your pup stops barking and then say "quiet" while rewarding for quiet behavior. In the beginning, you will capture the quiet behavior as soon as they offer it. Once your pup gets the hang of this, say “quiet” as soon as they stop barking and then wait 2-3 seconds to give the reinforcement. This will help you avoid your puppy chaining the behaviors of “bark, quiet, treat.” Later you can ask for the command "quiet" when your dog barks and they will understand that it means stop barking. Until then, your pup just thinks that you are barking along with him/her or that barking is what you want.

    I live alone and I have a cat and I am bringing a puppy home within the next month. How do I use the recommended technique on feeding them if it is just me do I keep the dog and a crate or do I separate them by a baby gate or something else?

    • @HowToTrainADreamDog
      @HowToTrainADreamDog  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question! You'll be working double duty when you are tossing a treat to the cat while you're also giving your pup, who is on leash, a treat at the same time each are in the presense of each other. It might take a little planning to set up the training sessions so pup and cat are at a distance. A gate could make a great divider as long as you're not starting with both pets directly next to the gate (on oppoiste sides).

      A golden retriever would be great! With any breed, you are able to manage the environment and work on training so both pets are able to coexist in peace. However, there are some breeds that are more prone to pestering cats due to what they were bred for. Those breeds would be ones whose natural impulse is to hunt, herd, or chase.

    But what to do when you're single, and your cat is used to going in and out of the house as it pleases, and you're bringing home the puppy 1 day and it basically just has to work out because all you can do is introduce them and thats that? Keeping a cat in 1 room would stress her so much whn she's used to the entire house and being able to go out whenever she wants. • @HowToTrainADreamDog

    My puppy isn’t afraid of the cats and only one cat isn’t afraid. One of my cats only watch from a distance while the other likes to go into the puppy’s space( The puppy is usually locked in the living room while the cats have the rest of the house.) and go drink out of her bowl and then lay down in front of her. The puppy sees the cats as another dog and tries to play with him. None of the cats have hissed at her and the puppy has never biten them. When the cats are in the puppy’s place they never take any treats. What do I do?

    • @HowToTrainADreamDog
      @HowToTrainADreamDog  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You can use the techniques in this video to slowly expose the puppy to each cat, while each animal gets tasty treats. When they can't see each other, the treats go away. This helps them learn that good things happen in the presence of the other animal. Be sure to teach your puppy what you want her to do when the cats are around, especially if she wants to play and the cats do not.

    I am currently struggling with this. I have a blue Nose Pit who is 7 1/2 months, but is really big and has really high energy and I just got a kitten and he has been barking at her and she runs and hides under the bed or behind the toilet and I really don’t want her to get stressed out. I broke down about 30 minutes ago because I don’t want to have to remove one of them because I want them to get along, but it’s very hard to distract him because he’s still trying to learn and become well trained. He loses his focus easily and I am guilty of discipline, not with my hand, but with a rolled newspaper, and I know he doesn’t like it so I try to make him sit and smell the blanket and he notices she’s there and wherever he hears her, he just whines and when he sees her, he barks, yet his tail is wagging so I can’t tell if he wants to play or is trying to get her. He chased her under the bed. And I think it’s because she ran, but I don’t know and I really want to seek help before I become more stressed or before one of them does because I always feel bad for leaving one out because they whine and cry. I’d really love your help if you can.

    My dog did really good. I got a tiny baby Belgian malinois. I set the cat and dog on the floor distances away (before i watched this video).. my cat attacked my new puppy. My puppy is okay, he didnt get a scratch on him luckily. I feel so bad for my puppy. He is smaller than my cat by a hair. My car keeps hissing, her hair standing up and she just keeps trying to attack him over and over. We cant set the dog on the ground at all. In my case, the dog is calm and sweet and my cat is turning into a psycho. Idk what to do

      Helping a puppy and a cat get along will be part of the human’s job! Not all animals will love each other as best friends, but with the proper introduction and positive association, you can work towards creating a peaceful co-existence in your home. This may take quite awhile, but make sure to take it very slow. We hope this video had some great tips you can use!

    My foster puppy that my mother got a few days ago checked out my cat and got tackled, both were fine but now the puppy barks at my cat and snarls. It is scary bc I love both my cat and my new pup, now i have 2 pets that aren’t on good terms in a small house

      @@HowToTrainADreamDog well new update: my cat and dog now avoid eachother. Unfortunately while writing this comment I have a gut-ache.. and since I’m home alone I really can’t stop any conflicts between them

      Be sure to give your puppy and cat their own space so they can avoid each other. Sorry to hear you are not well.

      @@HowToTrainADreamDog hey there I’m better now, the puppy and my cat tolerate eachother now, after the first 5 days or so they got used to eachother so yay!
      The puppy has a Rottweiler/Doberman so it’s pretty sad for people to move away from our puppy, she is a big dog with the Rottweiler colours which people think make it threatening? She is a sweet dog and she doesn’t bark a lot, she has strength behind her but doesn’t tug on her leash. Though we are still fostering we are definitely adopting her. So another yay!

    I have a 2 year old cat but ik scared that if i buy a pug my cat might become jealous and leave me :(
    But hopefully that wont happen cause il always love him more than anythings

    • @HowToTrainADreamDog
      @HowToTrainADreamDog  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good news pets don't have jealousy like humans. What may happen is your cat gets scared of the new pup that wants to chase him. This causes stress in the cat and leads to hiding and staying away when pup is out. Be sure to work on positive introductions with both pets and go slow with the intros.
