Join us for one typical day on board our narrowboat on a beautiful cruise from Braunston on the Grand Union Canal towards Oxford, and see how we manage it all.
Hello! If you are new here we are Caroline and Pete, and in 2021, after 10 years living in Texas, we sold up and moved back home to the UK to live full time aboard a 60ft narrowboat, One Day More, with our West Highland Terriers! Join us in our day to day life as we continuously cruise the canals and rivers of the UK. All of the ups, and the downs and everything in between!

Blue skies and sunshine yesterday and grey and raining today. We are hoping the forecast is right that this is the last rain for the week 😊
Very nice day in the life video. It's good for Alex to do chores, builds character ☺️. Pete certainly knows his way around the kitchen, that pork roast dinner looked fab! So glad you enjoyed it! It was good to have Alex aboard to help with those daily boating chores, plus he got more of a glimpse into our day to day life too. A bit different from his life on a cruise ship! Pete loves to cook a roast, but will gladly admit that he sometimes cheats on the Yorkshire puddings! These are Tescos Finest, and are so good it saves on washing up in a tiny space, making them yourself! The other veg was asked carrot and swede. We love it 😊

We live on the water, in front of and behind out home. I cannot imagine spending the days chasing places to fill and empty, gas, cassettes, rubbish, water, etc. It's like work and the canals are limiting. I admire your willingness to give it a go but I'd be nuts hanging about in our boat all day. Hamish is a character, do you think it's his game to have you lift him up and down? Stay safe.
You know the joys of living by the water too 😊 We see all that ‘work’ as part of our narrowboat adventure really. Yes, there are times, more often in winter, when we are not moving as regularly so it’s more of a chore to have to move for those jobs to be done, but the upsides of this life far outweigh the downsides. Hamish is 15 now and has never been able to negotiate the top step of our boat easily as it’s a little deeper than the rest, so he’s always needed a little help getting over that top step, and we think he has a little doggy dementia and doesn’t quite know what he wants now! Now that was a nice dinner 😊, lovely to see your son with you, what a voice. We are looking forward to having a good coffee machine on board, we can’t stand the awful coffee bags we have been using on the boat for ease while going back and forth, they are yuck 😂
Pete’s definitely king of the roast! That fancy coffee maker has only been with us for the last 6 months, and as more of a tea drinker I was not too fussed but I have to say that Pete was right, after his endless research watching TH-cam coffee machine reviewers, and it makes a great cup of coffee! Come on over! 😊

Alex moved to the UK a couple of years ago as he had a talent agent in London, who then helped get him his dream job as an entertainer on a cruise ship. It’s lovely to see him and have him aboard between contracts. Happy to hear you found halloumi ! 😊

Thanks so much Leigh! We’ve been reading all about Hurricane Beryl, and friends that are still without power sadly, and one friend with a tree that came down on her house. I hope you weren’t too badly affected. Horrible memories of Harvey which so badly affected Friendswood. I think Beryl has been more wind damage though than the rain of Harvey. I actually went to pick up Alex, which was why we had to do the car shuffle. Sometimes we leave the car for a week or so if we know we won’t need it, but we do use What3Words a lot when meeting up with friends. Sophie lives in Wisconsin and has been to the boat a couple of times, just for a day cruise, but she’s one of those people that really feels the movement of the boat while on board and for the few days after. We are glad we are not affected like that! 😊
@onedaymoreaboard That would have been terrible if you had suffered such motion sickness. And yes, Beryl was more wind than rain. Nonetheless, Memorial Dr and Allen Parkway flood just as much. You guys be well.

BRILLIANT!! (Yes I’m shouting!!) This video really gave a taste of life on board and I loved it - so many useful tips - and WOW Pete now that’s a roast. Thank you for sharing your lives with us. Question - is the boat alarmed and what do you recommend for wifi?
Glad you are enjoying Thai better glimpse into our lives Swanny, that’s a little bit more than just the cruising! And showing that you can cook a great roast in a small space with a small oven! We have a camera with an alarm on board. As for WiFi, we have an unlimited plan with EE and have found that has mostly good coverage across the whole network. We have decided we need to upgrade our router and aerial though, as friends also on EE are getting much faster speeds than us. There was a post last week in the Friendly Narrowboat Facebook group that was a discussion about hardware. Take a look there’s especially Wes Arthur’s comment about what he uses. That’s Wes from Boat Time if you watch them? He knows what he’s talking about 😊

Oh I have said exactly the same Wendy! My favourite bridge is High Bridge number 57 on the Shroppie which is tall and majestic and beautiful. Pete said he loves the simplicity of this bridge, and the years of stories it tells of cows walking across 😊

Yes Roger, we were in Houston, Texas for 10 years. Pete works in the oil and gas industry that at took us there, having been in Singapore for 7 years before that. Certainly a wonderful adventure, but now we are enjoying being back home and exploring the UK very slowly. Thanks for watching 😊

Your trip is letting us relive our two week hire in June. Wish we were still there. What is the little solar panel for-the one at the bow?
That’s so lovely to hear that we are bringing back some lovely memories! Which route did you take? That little solar panel at the bow is for the security camera. It’s in a magnetic pole and we put it out of the way at the bow while we are cruising, and then move it onto the top of the boat near the stern entrance when we are moored up 😊
@@onedaymoreaboardThank you for responding. We left Napton and headed south to Milton Keynes by way of Braunston. Stayed at the Braunston Marina a couple of days to explore Braunston. Walked the same streets, went to the butcher, had coffee in the charity cafe. On the way back from MK we went to the chandlery and had drinks at the Boat House. From there we traveled the Oxford canal to the north part of the GU and headed to the Saltisford Arm. After that, back to Napton. Did pop in to the Crick Boat Show-such a treat!
