- Recorded Live on Facebook watch our inside tour of our latest bespoke built narrowboat The Speedy Whippet II. This canal boat is 68.5 ft long and has an hybrid propulsion system allowing it to cruise on both electric motor or diesel engine.
The Speedy Whippet II is fitted out is lots of solid Ash and Oak. She has two bedrooms, walkthrough bathroom, large saloon with diesel stove, 6 seater pullman dinette, huge galley with quartz worktops, wine cellars in the floor, washer/dryer, and integrated fridge and freezer.
There is no gas on board so both the Miele Oven and induction hob are electric. She has a 775Ah at 48v providing all day cruising on electric. On the roof there are 8 200w, 1.6kw worth of solar panels.
The boat has a large bow thruster which can be operated via a remote control as can the propeller (Forward and astern).
All the steel work has been shot blasted prior to being painted with 2 pack epoxy paintwork and hull blacking. Copper Coat paint has been applied to the steel work below the waterline.
All the windows/ portholes are double glazed and she is centrally heated to stainless steel radiators.

Boat is absolutely stunning obviously but you two are hilarious in your delivery of otherwise kind of dry information. I could watch you for hours!
Thank you. We're glad you enjoyed it 😊
Stunning, fitted out stunningly .lot's of light. Only if i was a lot younger and a lot richer. .But i can see all the narrow boats on the canals, as there are a lot filming .
Hello from California. This is the most beautiful and well-thought-out narrowboat that I have ever seen. Absolutely exquisite. Thank you for the video.
Thank you 😊
Well done! Best one I’ve seen yet 😊
One of the best looking boats I've seen, you really know how to build a beautiful thing
Thank you 😊
Stunning Boat. Absolutely love it. Thank you for showing us around the Boat.
A stunning boat it’s now our new neighbour in our home marina wish them all the best
Absolutely brilliant and beautiful boat. The craftsmanship is exquisite! Many congrats! 👏🥰
Thank you 😊
Nice work guys - Tim
That’s a beautiful boat guys
Wow just beautiful I would a boat like this so lovely built and finished.❤❤thanks for showing us.😊
Hi guys, wow have to be the best looking narrow boat I’ve ever seen. Absolutely love it while put together in fantastic design. Keep up the good work Cliff from Australia.
Thanks so much!😊
Hi watching with interest from Turkey.
Wasn’t watching you live but watching you now this evening from the California Mohave Desert. (29 palms) USA: what a beautiful build and what a thrill it must be navigating the canals in a beauty like this.
Thanks for watching and your kind comments 👍🏼👍🏼
Wow amazing job. On the Speedy Wippet 2
Very envious Mike from Bristol.
The Speedy Whippet I has been through Bristol, and out onto the Severn. Maybe they'll also bring SW II through that area too👍
How Clever as well as beautiful and functional
interesting just came across your channel. kind regards, jason
Brilliant! Sensational boat!
Thank you 😊
Beautiful. I've been watching TH-cam narrowboat channels for years (probably since the COVID lockdown) and spent a week on the MonBrec on holiday. I love to design my own boat in my head and this one just about nails it. The front bedroom is exactly what I would have drawn, as is the aft end of the boat. I might redesign the mid-cabin to be more of a desk/work-area, but that's pretty specific to me. A beautiful boat... well built and well designed. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you 😊
me to, I would go for office smaller with access out in the bow, cabin abit bigger, separate shower, sink open separate toilet, salon, horseshoe kitchen, dining, separate washing machine area then out to the stern............
Stunning boat!
Thank you
Beautiful boat 😊
Beautiful boat.
Thank you Carol, hope you're keeping well x
Amazing. Love the size.
Loving the commentary.😉
sound perfect thanks
Without doubt the nicest NB i have ever seen. We would happily move off our WB for that, wonderful piece of work. Are you at Crick? Best, Darren & Wendy
Thank you 😊. No we're not at Crick this year but we'll be having another open day in the summer. Watch out on our Socials for the date 👍
Hi guys yes I can hear you. Regards Bob Rose
Nice video. I do love seeing older wooden boats and styles just because they have so much character to them and history as well, but I do love the more modern boats because they include so many more modern features and using both energy saving features as well as new composite materials or even recycled materials. The interior woodwork is glorious. I didn't see any microwave in the kitchen. What is the hull made from, steel or aluminum? What is the upper deck area made from? Does the 68.5 ft. length limit this boat from certain canals due to lock length? I don't like the entrance being straight into the master bedroom area, would be better placed in the center where the spare bedroom is at. What is the custom price for something like this?
❤beautiful.
Thank you 😊
Beautiful, love it. Dare I ask how much one like this cost. Or is it like Rolls Royce if one has to ask one can’t afford it.
Obviously a special order but if one was looking for something similar what sort of cost would it be. Absolutely stunning boat I've looked at hundreds on here and this is one of the best I have seen. I did see an all electric widebeam but it's not practical for a lot of the waterways
Thank you, very kind 😊 . We're at the high end of the bespoke build market, (we don't mass produce) and only price against a customers specification. If you visit our website you'll find a quotation form you can complete - we provide full, detailed and transparent pricing that way 👍
I drive a liner class Carthago motorhome and it cost nearly £ 180,000 this narrow boat is on another level so my guess it’s on the high end of the
£300,000
Nice boat and well done. You forgot to specify the price ?
@MrTonynyc57 Thank you - this is a private build, so we can't reveal the price I'm afraid. However, with added options from our standard build costs (found on our website) our builds range from £200,000 to over £300,000 depending on length of boat and how high the individual specification is - and whether diesel or hybrid propulsion.
Are your boats made with pump out toilets? Do they have fridge and freezers?
It's up to the owner to decide on the type of toilet system on board. This boat has a macerator pump out, but we've installed both cassette and composting toilets too. A fridge is provided as standard, with options of adding a freezer, washing machine and dishwashers if the owner wants them. Thanks 😊
Hi very good where are they made as hybrid is a better bet than all electric
All made here in the UK, our premises are in Derbyshire. Most electric boats have a back up generator. Therefore, you could argue that these boats are actually hybrid. There are not currently many long-term cruising boats on the canal system that are purely electric, which rely on just solar and plug in charging.
What would that boat knock out at price wise? Thanks, I really like it :) 68.5 Ft long, will that go through all the locks? Cheers thanks....Regards phil.
All the boats are priced and built for customers individually - but the cost will depend on size and specification. On average anything from £200,000 to over £300,000. This boat will go through the majority of locks, apart from some canals in Yorkshire and Lancashire. Thanks
So reminiscent of the old Springers - cabin instead of well deck. I always thought it was such a good use of space.
Beautiful boat, but where do all the smells and steam go when you are cooking? Does it have an extractor fan fitted?
Yes extractors fitted in both galley and bathroom 👍
Question, what is the general, inside space in ft, length also average length of the bow and stern....
Ahem...a sound proof engine room so that Yah boat won't be detected by Submarines...or U-boats...😊😅😂
Nice boat mate .take control thought 😢
also do fit inside the space you have, or could you measure want you want inside the boat and lay out then ask for a shell to fit that specification.........
All our boats are bespoke in length, as the layout or customers wished will determine the length. Maximum lenght is 70ft, but if you want to travel the complete system then it would be 57ft as some locks are shorter than others.
@@AquaNarrowboats thank you for your reply
Escargot 😊
One more question, this boat looked like it had very good head height - what is the actual interior height?
We specify extra head height, therefore the centre head height is just under 6'6" 👍
When he said whirligig I immediately associated it with those spinny shelves lol
I use the same description for the outdoor spinning washing line too! 😂😂
@@AquaNarrowboats I call those helidryers, or laundrycopters 😂
@@theanachronist9125 🤣
so if someone is sleeping on the dining table and someone from one of the other beds wanted a cold drink they would have to crawl over that bed or is there a way around
You'd have to go outisde and back in again - but i think the chances of this happening would be rare. The bed isn't left in situ during the day.
Can you give more information about the solar panels, please?
These are 200w semi flexible panels, there are 8 providing 1.6kw. There are connected to a Victron MPPT.
@@AquaNarrowboats Thank you...
Hi. How much would a boat like this cost. Of this type kind regards Bob Rose Northampton UK
@bobrose513 All the boats are priced and built for customers individually - but the cost will depend on size and specification. On average anything from £200,000 to over £300,000
Hi, we have a 57ft narrowboat built in 2008 which we would like refitted inside is this something you could do?
I'm afraid not we only fit out our own boats.
Hi Guys,
Definitely some interesting features, IMPRESSIVE!
I am curious about the copper coating. How does it compare in price and durability to 2 pack blacking? Does one require any special tools to apply it or can it be brushed / rolled on?
Mark
Alberta, Canada
@markrant1460 Many thanks for your kind comments. Copper coat is in addition to 2 pack blacking. It's applied over the top. The main reason to apply it on the canal network is to reduce algae/weed growth. It can be applied with a roller by hand. It will add on a couple of thousand £s to the bill. 👍
Thank you very much for your expedient reply, most helpful.
Is the copper coating comparable in longevity to the 2 pack??
Now for a different kind of question lol. Why do narrowboats have a bow that slope back instead of being at right angles to the waters surface?
Finally, would 2,000 pounds a running foot be a reasonable cost that one would spend, these days, on a new, basic yet comfortable narrowboat these days?? I do realize that there are many variables to consider; just trying to get some idea since the cost of steel has jumped.
Mark
Alberta, Canada @@AquaNarrowboats
@@markrant1460 The copper coat will require touching up about every 7-10 years depending on condition. The slope of the bow is mainly for aesthetics but also helps shed water from leaking lock gates. £2000.00 per foot would be at the lower end of the market, with a basic specification. Hope that's of help.
Ouch...! Much is this smart saloon home...😊😅😂
Out of interest with this length, how much of the network will be navigable?
Good question - the majority of the system is navigable, really only the the Leeds Liverpool canal and some smaller Yorkshire canals. We built the Owners of this boat a smaller boat over 10 years ago, and they have already cruised these canals and now want more family on board. 😊
What about under floor heating ?
Could be done, but in our opinion, it's not a good idea on a narrowboat. The whole interior is built off the floor, and when it inevitably goes wrong, it would be a nightmare to resolve. Plus, you will be losing head height to get the pipe runs in.
Parallel hybrid no licence reduction, far better to have been a series hybrid with a smaller generator, much more fuel efficient and less emissions
Each to their own, the owner wanted the back up of diesel propulsion too. For some folk this outweighs anything else. But we'll be starting a build shortly that has a serial hybrid 👍
What HP diesel is it outfitted with? I assume the diesel can also act as a genset?
It's a Beta 50. Yes it has twin alternators plus the electric motor turns into a Genset with the diesel engine running.
Cracking boats, how long do they take start to finish.
It really depends on the customers specification , but on average, from the base plate going down to the keys being handed over its about 6 months.
Nice boat…..how much?
Thank you- all our boats are built to order, and I'm afraid we cannot reveal pricing of a customers boat. But you'll find base pricing for diesel propulsion on our website. This boat is a Hybrid electric ( which costs more) and also hads lots of optional extras. www.aquanarrowboats.co.uk
The locker seats - are they lockable??????
The ones at the back could be although the owner didn't specify this, but the larger storage locker at the bow is lockable.
I bet that bed's a nightmare to make in the front cabin!!
All beds on a narrowboat can be difficult to make - we also run a hire fleet so we are aware of this. However we left quite a bit of space around the mattress both for air movement, as well as making it a little easier to make 😊
That's the first thing I thought. Back breaking!
Really nice looking boat but it's near impossible to keep nice woodwork finishes in an immaculate condition. Sooner or later, it will succumb to moisture (condensation/damp - both inherent problems for boats) and ruin the finish. It's a shame boat builders don't use composite materials that are resistant to this.
We've been building narrowboats for 20 years and all of them are still going strong. As long as you take good care of them there is no reason why they wouldn't be around double that - it's actually the steel hull that would become more of an issue. Which is why we grit blast the steelwork and paint with two pack epoxy 👍
@AquaNarrowboats Sorry didn't mean to imply it would sink! More that the interior woodwork will deteriorate due to moisture over a period of time. My boat was built to a high standard but due to condensation and damp many of the panels and window frames would encounter damp stains over time. I have seen this happen to modern Aqualines too all of which are built to a good standard. While it looks lovely I'm surprised other materials are not used in place of timber.
@@rmo668 I suppose you could use aluminum or fiberglass, but whether it's a car, plane, or boat, it will need maintenance after 10 yrs. Likewise, nothing lasts forever...metal rusts, fiberglass degrades, etc. Surely a yearly maintenance is the norm with these boats?
Have to agree with comment from Aqua comment. If you look after it the wood will be looking amazing in 60 years.
@richoverip - I rather think it's a shame so many narrowboat owners do not know how to properly maintain their brightwork.
I'm a sailor and am always mystified when I see the interiors of narrowboats with woefully neglected woodwork - boats are not floating apartments - they require regular maintenance of all systems and finishes (after all, one's life does rather depend on one's boat being well and properly kept).
price?
Our boats are built to order - so this boat already has an owner 👍
@@AquaNarrowboats yes that was clear, I was wondering how much is a project like this but if you don't want to talk about it here publicly I totally understand.
@Leo-Crespi I'm sorry but as our boats are bespoke built to a customers specification we cannot reveal pricing. However, we have a quotation form on the website for which we provide full and detailed pricing for any specification boat - you just need to provide your name, address and contact details. Many thanks
@@AquaNarrowboats No worries, thanks.
Why not buy a boat you could take out in the English channel or much farther perhaps around the world ?
That's why folk chose the UK canals, because they have either had enough of the sea, or prefer to be only ever just 6ft from land! 😂
I'm sorry but the resident Whippet will be up and over those rear stable doors in the bat of an eyelid!! As will other athletic breeds
They can still chose to close the doors...The owners had these fitted on the last boat and love them, but thanks for all your positive comments about the boat so far 😊
The boat of course is stunning. Apologies for the negative comments!
I know what you mean, but they can always get another Whippet ! 🫢. I love dogs but why would you want one on a boat? Each to their own. They even named the boat after it! 😁😁
I wouldn’t be able too sleep in it with the thought of the batteries exploding it’s like an electric coffin.
What a completely misinformed and ridiculous statement - you mean as opposed to living in a house with a gas pipe running through it or driving a car with a petrol tank underneath it....
@AquaNarrowboats I am surprised you even bothered to answer the comment lol.
In the educating the consumers and buyers it is important to address misinformation
@heli-man I guess you won’t be buying a Narrow Boat any time soon. Perhaps you’d better stay in Bed for the rest of your life. What about driving with a tailgater on a wet Motorway? Or you driving and not allowing for stopping distance. And I’ve seen a lot of cars on fire on the Mway. 🙄🙄
Fabulous boat, we’d sell our house for a boat like this, thanks @LoveLifeTriumph for adding the link 😊
Thank you 😊
