  • Capt. Nathan Algren (Tom Cruise) is an American military officer hired by the Emperor of Japan to train the country's first army in the art of modern warfare. As the government attempts to eradicate the ancient Samurai warrior class in preparation for more Westernized and trade-friendly policies, Algren finds himself unexpectedly affected by his encounters with the Samurai, which places him at the center of a struggle between two eras and two worlds.

@@FlixTalk This was a real good movie and in it I was all for the Samurai but in reality the Samurai would not teach a non Japanese and the Ninja were farmers who had to come up with a way to protect themselves from the Samurai and there masters who were the Shoguns so these farmers created Ninjutsu and there were different clans the two main ones were the Iga and Koga Clans and they would not teach non Japanese in the old days eventually that changed a Grandmaster in Ninjutsu is Grandmaster Masaaki Hatsumi he is on TH-cam.Some ninja did become bad and assassin's for hire by the Shogun for example. But for the most part the Samurai and Shoguns were the enemy of the Ninja. The Samurai used Daito Ryu Aiki Jujutsu and Karate the Ninja used Ninjutsu you can watch both on TH-cam but some Ninja teachers are fake just like in other styles.

Critics at the time hated it because they felt it was a “white savior” film…I think they fundamentally misunderstood the film. The Samurai saved Algren, not the other way around. They taught him peace, life, honor, sacrifice, and coming to terms with your own inevitable death.

That's what I think is so great about this movie to people, and why it hits so hard. It appears to be one thing on the surface, and purposefully subverts all the tropes (most) that a typical Hollywood movie would fall into.

    • @awlabrador

The truth, as demonstrated by history, is that the Emperor was right to modernize Japan, as the Imperial Japanese military ran roughshod over China (whether that was the right thing to do is a separate question) and was eventually able to go toe-to-toe with the US military during WWII, and as the Japanese economy is a first world economy today. Even in the movie, the modernized Japanese army, fully-trained, didn’t cut and run in the face of the fearsome samurai. And the samurai weren’t averse to using modern weapons. The samurai rebels just reverted to traditional weaponry when they ran out of ammo.

I agree, the Last Samurai might not be completely historically accurate, but it is loosely based on historical events. During the Japanese civil war, Samurai Lords that fought against the Emperor's army did have white people becoming Samuraies and join the Japanese Samurai rank. Althought they mostly serve as technical advisor against European style military. In the last battle where Tom Cruise's character join the Samurai that is exactly the same role that Tom Cruise's character is. He is not a commander, he is an advisor. The Samurai Lords didn't trust the Europeans enough to give them command, but use them as advisors. The biggest historical inaccurate is that the Samurai had fire arms. Asia started using fire arm dated back to the 10th century. Europeans' first fire arm is introduced by the Mongols from Asia to the west. And in the beginning it is mostly used by the new Russian army trained by the Mongols. (it is similar to when British colonized India, they trained a modernized India army with British commanders. The Mongols did the same thing in Russia. During the 13th century, an Eastern military is rather modernized for the west. We also saw that army in battle in Asia. Chinese record told of Mongol forces with all Mongol officers, but the soldiers got pale skin with blond hair and blue eyes. Those soldiers are recruited from the far west. When the Mongol forces started to loose the war, some of those blond hair and blue eye soldiers deflected to the Chinese.) So, the Samurai did have fire arms. Even back to 15th century, there are record of Samurai Fire army regiment. (Asian in that time had a fire arm leigion with all fire army infantry. The legion will have one regiment attached to each infantry legion. The idea is similar to modern US army. Each infantry company will got 3 rifle platoon and one weapon platoon. The weapon platoon got weapons such as RPG and snipers and machine guns. While the other platoons stick with rifle. The ancient Asia follow the same idea. Each Division got one fire arm regiment and number of none fire army regiments.) But the reason to adopt western weapon for Japanese, is due to the fire arm weapons used by the Japanese are outdated. They need a massive upgrade. And a modernized army need all fire armed infantry not just semi fire armed. And they didn't have enough Sergeants and officers to train the peasants. So, they hire Europeans. But, by Tom Cruies' era the Samurai fought against the Emperor, no longer got fire arms, due to their supply line is cut. So, it is historical accurate that the Samurai only used swords and bow and arrow. The movie did have a line where the Japanese General told Tom Cruies' character that the Samurai no longer disgrace themselves via using fire arm. So, the movie did acknowledge that the Samurai once used fire arms. Just that most audiences didn't notice that line (next time you watch this movie, pay attention to that and you will notice it) Overall speaking, the Last Samurai is very historically accurate. (PS: In pre modern army, they didn't have so many officers. Platoons and regiments are much larger in size.)

oh yeah for sure. and it takes a long time too i liked that a lot in many movies they just fast forward the process. he gets his ass kicked over and over and he never actually wins a sparring round he only gets a draw as his best. he does save katsumuto and taka from the ninjas though thats the only scene i thought was a little bit silly. like i mean ok to kill one or two ninjas but he was just tossing ninjas to the side left and right, professional assassins i think it would have been better if he had one long fight with ONE or maybe two ninjas but ok its hollywood after all. otherwise the only thing he provides is really that he knows the enemy better than they do because he helped to train them and he has some connections that they dont but yeah as you say otherwise its all about the samurai and taka.

When Algren is gored by the spear in the forest battle, all the air was sucked out of my screening from everyone gasping and catching their breath. The cheers when Bagley is impaled by Algren's sword. The tears when Katsumoto's son goes down fighting, when the last charge is gunned down by the Gatlings... good lord, I want to experience that screening again so badly lol This movie has everything.

I weep like a freaking baby every time, even still, 19 years later. One of my favourite films of all time. Some facts:
    - Tom Cruise trained for months just for the fight against all those men.
    - Bob was a retired and super well known actor that came from retirement just for this movie.
    - The guy that built Tom's sword is a 3rd or 5th generation sword maker. He build the place were he made the sword.
    - Took 3 days to film the first battle through the fog (my favorite part)
One part I always look forward is when the woman dresses Tom Cruise. All the movements were so precise. I found it super sensual.
I purchased the Soundtrack, which I love listening to blasting my ears.

Katsumoto's last words have a double meaning. Even in the era of change from the samurai era to the westernization, he sticks to his own way of life and beliefs as a samurai, dying beautifully in battle, and the falling cherry blossoms that have grown splendidly over the years.
    Katsumoto's death

    Majestic falling cherry blossoms.

One of my favorite lines in all of cinema. It could have came off so cliched, but with everything that happened in the movie, it had such deep meaning behind it. As much as Katsumoto and the samurai put so much stake in how they died, it was in how they LIVED, that Nathan had found peace and meaning in his life.

What made it even more powerful was that when the Emperor said, "Tell me how he died." Nathan basically says *No* to the Emperor (something you never did). But he says no in such a way that even the Emperor smiles and nods; almost like saying, "You are right," and does this in front of the Emperor's top advisors. I think it's the second most powerful scene, next to all the soldiers laying down their weapons and bowing to Katsumoto after he died.

the ending where they ride to do battle again the Japanese army and when the show the gatlin gun, was my favorite/not favorite if that makes any sense at all. it showed their true courage even in the eye of certain death.

This is my first time seeing a reaction of yours. You have a new subscriber. I appreciate how you react, and how genuine it is. I saw this movie in theaters and it’s one of my favorites. I rewatch it and always get teary eyed no matter how many times I’ve seen it. You understood his love for the people, culture and that he became a samurai. Beautiful and GREAT reaction.

A lot of movie reviewers provide a good reaction. But why yours is superior is for your synopsis & the thoughtful recap.

This makes me wish it was more commonplace for ordinary citizens to be prepared physically and mentally for battle nowadays. Not to go to war but to be ready to protect what is right.
The sound of the Gatling gun as the Japanese commander is crying is so brutal though.
    “They are all perfect.”

This movie is a work of art. The cinematographer, costumes and the acting is just breathtaking. Tom Cruise’s best performance. And at the risk of be a bit of a romantic I can’t help reciting some of the Charge of the Light Brigade (read it you get what I mean “ charge through the batteries smoke right through the the lines they broke)

Great movie. Great reaction. You asked about Algren basically playing back in his head when he was fighting those guys by himself, and how he visualized his moves beforehand earlier in the movie. Both are actually something eastern martial artists are taught/encouraged to do. Visualization and reflection. His practice session with Ujio was an example of visualization. Also reminding himself to focus more by emptying his mind. His fight with those men was an example of reflection. He had once again emptied his mind. And allowed his body to move without thinking. The idea behind that is that you are much more efficient when you act without thought. To practice your techniques so much that they become as natural as breathing. And when he was reflecting he was recalling what he did, because he moved so fluidly it was sort of a blur to him in the fight. He moved without thought.

I would argue that "The Last Samurai" is the best Tom Cruise movie, with "Collateral" being a strong second. (because Tom plays a great badguy and it's so out of character for him)

@@christopherfrost1820 Personal lives are no one's business. Like you said, he knows how to make a movie that totally entertains and puts everything he has into it, learning whatever skills are required to make the performance realistic. I aw Top Gun: Maverick in theatres and it was fantastic. Like you, I also love Edge of Tomorrow and Oblivion, Minority Report and so many others of his films.

Great reaction and editing of the video. Robert Deniro was in a film called, The Mission, which I bet you would like. He starts off as this horrible person that goes through this brutal redemption with an awesome scene of forgiveness.

Definitely a 5 out of 5 - it is an absolutely fantastic film. It's beautifully shot, scored and choreographed. Tom Cruise is amazing in it. People who easily dismiss him as an actor should watch this film. All of the other actors/actresses also play their roles to perfection. The messages behind it are strong and poignant and the whole movie is stunning from the first shot to the last. It's one of my favourite Tom Cruise films. The transition of Nathan from what he was at the start to learning the ways of his captors and eventually earning their respect and finding an appreciation and respect for their ways is perfectly paced. LOL I also had it on DVD before buying the Blu-Ray.

There are just so many poignant moments in this beautiful film, that make me cry apart from all the Samurai getting annihilated at the end. The exchange between Algren & Taka, where he apologises for killing her husband. Her grace & forgiveness is so moving. Then the part with Algren & Taka’s son, talking about the glory to die in battle. Algren & the boy showing such vulnerability, makes me weep. Then Algren presenting the sword to the Emperor, trying to express his love & admiration for Katsumoto. Omg, what an incredible movie 😭
