Fun fact in addtion to Rick's: Commodus and Marcus Aurelius were real people, maximus definitely was not. Marcus Aurelius is known as the Philosopher King, he was a wise ruler that spent his life in the borders of rome fighting German Barbarians. but he never wanted at any point in time, to give power back to the senate (honestly the senate was usually a bunch of corrupt old men that wanted the power remain with the Aristocracy and not the people) When Marcus Died (commodus didn't kill him), Commodus basically spent his entire rule not doing what the last 5 emperors before him (who were widely regarded as the best Roman Emperors) did. That Chariot bisection is still one of the gnarliest deaths I've ever seen in theatres. When I watched this as a teenager on the big screen everyone in the theatre gave a collective OOOOOOOOOOOH when that happened.
I know it sounds like a cliché, but seeing Gladiator for the first time when I was 12/13 had such an impact on me. I wouldn't say it's my favourite film of all time, but it is definitely a huge milestone on my journey of loving movies. After seeing it, I knew that from that point on I would never think about films the same way again. It inspired me to want to learn more about films and filmmaking as a process rather than just enjoying them as mindless entertainment. When people ask me where my love of films comes from, I always tell them that it started with Gladiator.
23 years later and it is still my favorite movie. My favorite scene is right before the first match when the gladiators are paired up to fight and Proximo delivers the speech about meeting their end so that they may be remembered as men. And then watching Maximus after the speech get ready to fight by performing his prefight ritual of putting soil in his hands and rubbing them together understanding that its time to get down to the get down. Great reaction guys! Appreciate your channel!
@d wood what you mean? It's not the best movie of all time but for sure it's up there of one of the best, the story ,the performances of all , the custumes and set design the music it's a 9/10 for me so its one of the best movies of all time. And the ending gets me everytime and I seen it like 20 times already or so.
Talking about the accidental cast members, there's a shot in the war sections at the start where Maximus is interacting with his horse, holding the reins and stroking it etc, and like dead centre shot there's a crew member in jeans trying to hide behind the horse's head because he's got trapped in the middle of the frame 😂 I liked the reference to the 2010 Robin Hood that Calvin made at the start of the reaction. It's certainly no Gladiator, but I like the film for whatever reason as an easy-watcher. I'd enjoy that being in the rotation for reactions if the others/Aaron haven't seen it.
not sure, would have to watch the behind the scenes commentary again but I think the horse Russel Crowe rides in Robin is the same as the one he rides in the battle scene. Could be real as horses live for approx. 30 years and only 10 years passed between the two movies.
The big blonde guy is German ex bodybuilder Ralf Moeller who won Mr Universe in 1986. he’s also starring in The Scorpion King. He’s a really nice guy! Greetings from Germany 😁

Always fun to watch along with you guys, even better when it's a great film! Kudos to Rick for his historical insights, and the guaranteed serotonin that your reaction videos give me! This soundtrack will be in my head all day now - and I'm fine with it!
@BlindWave You mentioned the score sounding like Pirates of the Caribbean. Both were composed and performed by the legend Hans Zimmer, outstanding scores!
Fun fact... The Germanic Chant prior to the battle in the Forest is the same one used in the film ZULU.. Zulu was one of Ridley Scotts favourite films so he wanted to pay tribute to it by using the Zulu chant as that for the Germanic tribe ..
They had to use the track from Zulu because the language being used by the extras was to say the least was getting a bit adult with all the excitement.
The strobing slo-mo in the battle scenes is a very Ridley Scott thing. Meanwhile, the changed frame rate to make it look slightly sped up is very much the influence of Saving Private Ryan from two years earlier.
Winner of 5 Oscars including Best Picture. Before Russell Crowe was cast to play Maximus, Hugh Jackman, Tom Cruise, Tom Sizemore, Mel Gibson and Antonio Banderas were considered for the role. The opening scene was filmed in Surrey England, the gladiator training school was filmed in Morocco and the scenes involving Ancient Rome were filmed in Malta for 19 weeks. Oliver Reed, who played Proximo, died of a heart attack on May 2, 1999. It was dedicated in his memory. Russell Crowe sustained several injuries during filming and almost died as a direct result. The scene where Maximus was fighting Tigris Of Gaul, the tiger almost killed Russell Crowe, but thankfully, he walked away with incident.
It wasn't just Surrey, it was just outside Bracknell, between it and Windsor (of Castle fame), called Caesar's Camp, at the end nearest Bracknell. Some decent offroad biking, not super gnarly, not boring flatness, but quite a place for Mountain Bikes, Motorbike offroading and horseriding. Some of the soldiers were hires from gyms and so forth, but unbeknownst to us, disguised as an audition for some dating drama thingy, so I missed out on being a soldier. Lots of people in the medicine tent because they wallped each other with fake swords and cracked bones because they weren't stunties or actors, just regular joes.
Actually(pushes glasses up) the emperors were called Augustus. When they started having junior emperors to rule alongside them they referred to the junior rulers as Caesar
"...Father to a murdered son. Husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next" Everything about this film is pure spectacle and it's Ridley Scott at his finest.
The actor that played in Man of Steel and the actor that played in The Passion of the Christ they're both in a movie called The Count of Monte Cristo which is really really really awesome movie The Count of Monte Cristo
I hope the sequel is as amazing as the original and that Blind Wave will react to it as well. Now that I know we're going to be following Lucius and reviewing the movie with you, I see that he's the perfect character for a sequel.
I loved this movie when I first saw it. Like Rick, I know some history about the movie and the historical inaccuracy. I'm a history buff and I found out later about it how, Commodus is based on an emperor but not real. That gladiators didn't really fight to the death. They usually fought animals or each other but rarely died. And what people don't really notice, is that there were a few female gladiators though they were rare. But despite all the inaccuracies, I still give high praise to this movie, it's so iconic.
Calvin is me. I love him. And Rick's shirt is kickass. Fantastic movie, saw it for the first time when it first came out on VHS. The score is one of my all time favorite.
Did you notice the guy in blue jeans and a white t-shirt (left of screen) in the crowd, just after the quote "Are you not entertained"? This film is very much like the 1964 film The Fall of the Roman Empire. Directed by Anthony Mann. Fun factoid...This and Galaxy Quest were being made at the same time.
Such a finely acted, finely written film with a masterful Directing, Musical score and cinematography to boot...still .remains as my top 3 favorite ever. The acting ensemble is God tier
4:05 this scene is quite funny if you know Brazilian Portuguese, because he speaks in Germanic yes, BUT it sounds like “É assim que meu fusca andaaaaa” which roughly translates to “That’s how my VW beetle rides” Thanks for coming to my useless Ted talk of the day
There are so many great things about this film, its greatest element being at its core a very basic story told many times before. I’ve seen/read interviews from those pitching the film, and laughing that it was a classic story of a man wronged and his family taken from him, and his journey to avenge them and then join them… but in Rome. A lot developed after this fact but that was the core idea. It’s a story as old as time but that is why it resonates, then add incredible dialogue, performances and musical score and you have a masterpiece.
I love this movie! I think I watched it about 6 times at the movie theater when it was released, I was soooo obsessed 😅 By the way, hello from Brazil, great content as always, guys 😃
They had to replace the original audio of the Germainians chanting in the battle because the language being used by the extras wasn't German and definitely wasn't something you could put in a family movie. We many have been getting a little excited.
Top ten of my favourite movies. My #1 favourite soundtrack. Too short on time to go through all these comments and see if someone said this: the slow mo in the first battle that you didn’t like was an on-the-fly practical fix. They didn’t schedule enough time to shoot the battle, and the sun was going down. Rather than spend the time and extensive money to redress the scene, reset everything, pay actors for another days’ work, and fall behind schedule, they shot it with the different shutter speed to match the lighting of earlier in the day. I don’t find it distracting at all. I find it dramatic, and when I found out why they did it was impressed with the ingenuity of fixing a very costly error with almost no time to think.
36:00 I’m SO glad Eric mentioned that the score sounded like Pirates of the Caribbean because I thought I was hearing things when I thought it sounded a lot like that score😂 Didn’t know the score for this was by the same composer and that makes more sense now!
One of my top movies of all time. The soundtrack is the icing on the cake especially since I'm a fan of the female vocalist on the soundtrack. She's Lisa Gerard from the duo group "Dead Can Dance" whom I have been following for some time :-)
To echo some sentiments from elsewhere in the thread, if you want more of the same check out Rome and Spartacus Rome: if you want high end HBO production value and a bunch of actors you’ll recognise from things like Game of Thrones or Star Wars (Rebels had no less than 3 of the main cast voicing Mandalorians, which had to be deliberate) Spartacus: if you want the bloodiest, horniest series ever, and actors you’re more likely to recognise from the DC CW shows Both a lot of fun :)
1:02:22 - Whilst the film is for the most part historically inaccurate, Quintus refusing to help aka betraying the current emperor would be some what accurate as the pretorian guard were often the ones that killed or betrayed the emperors they are sworn to protect. I wonder if there was a concious decision there or if it was merely a character arc thing.
I've interpreted the Quintus character as the "perfect Roman" or "Ideal Roman" role. He was loyal to the state and Emperor but also lives by a code. It might also be nod by Ridley Scott showing how powerful the Praetorian Guard would become.
There is definitely a character arc for Quintus although most of it was deleted. He is a loyal and dutiful soldier who sides against Maximus not because of personal reasons (he clearly respects Maximus) but because of duty and probably fear of what would happen to him and his family (if he has any). Honestly, most people would do the same thing and it was kinda dumb for Maximus to reject Commodus' offer. There is a deleted scene where Quintus is forced to execute two of his men by Commodus. And later in an another deleted scene just before the final duel between Commodus and Maximus, he tries to justify his actions to Maximus by saying "i'm a soldier, I obey". These events and the fact that Commodus gets beaten finally causes Quintus to lose all respect to him. He is not really the usual stereotypical scheming Praetorian guard commander who switches sides solely because of power and money.
Nothing tugs my heart strings more than Maximus declining the rule of Rome so that he could go home, and Caesar loving him for that, "That is why it must be you." It was Caesar's own way of saying, "Before you go home, can you save mine?" That and Proximo's monologuing on the intensity of crowd roaring in the stands.
I remember, for years I was trying to convince my wife to watch this movie with me and she always said no because she doesen't like ancient/war movies. Finally I have managed to trick her when she asked me what do I want for one of my birthdays and I did actually say "watch Gladiator with me". Wich she had to oblige and she was so moved by the whole movie that in the end she was clenching my hands through the whole ending and crying about why Maximus had to die. We were both crying of course, I'm always crying every time I see this movie.
It was Lisa Gerrard's vocals in the movie that really teared me up. Lisa Gerrard and Hans Zimmer together scored this movie and it was one of the scores that made me become a huge fan of Lisa Gerrard's music. I highly recommend checking out her music including her projects with Dead Can Dance as one of the main dual vocalists.
Commodus, was a real Emperor no? Obsessed with gladiator fights and even fought in some. I think he was killed by his trainer who wrestled and strangled him in his bathtub.

eventually he was assassinated. and thus the Pax Romana (The Peace inside the borders of the Empire) came to an end. and Rome just steadily went into decline after, it would never reach the same heights that it did during the period of the 5 Good Emperors.
I've seen this movie hundreds of times, but seeing Calvin cry did me in. Great movie and great reaction by this crew!
I have watched this movie so many times and I still cry. I appreciate that Calvin is getting the feels too. :)
ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED?!
ARE…YOU…NOT… ENTERTAINED?!?!?
If that doesn’t get you amped up nothing will.
Still crying when I hear the Soundtrack
The actress who plays Maximus' wife is Ridley Scott's wife.
Really? She's quite stunning
@@marthapackard8649 He mentioned it ob the directors commentary.
The "podium" of the Colosseum had an amazing moveable system, you guys should check out a documentary about it.
This was my first rated R movie, and it stands up in my top 10 to this day.
One of the best movies of all time!!!!! Are you not entertained?!!! And the soundtrack is so❤❤❤
@d wood what you mean? It's not the best movie of all time but for sure it's up there of one of the best, the story ,the performances of all , the custumes and set design the music it's a 9/10 for me so its one of the best movies of all time. And the ending gets me everytime and I seen it like 20 times already or so.
My favorite line: "The time for honoring yourself will soon be at an end." The self-control he showed in that moment was amazing!!!
Connie Nielsen was extraordinary as Lucilla. Just one look from her face spoke volumes.
The best opening in cinematic history, still remember when I watched that first scene for the first time...
Talking about the accidental cast members, there's a shot in the war sections at the start where Maximus is interacting with his horse, holding the reins and stroking it etc, and like dead centre shot there's a crew member in jeans trying to hide behind the horse's head because he's got trapped in the middle of the frame 😂
I liked the reference to the 2010 Robin Hood that Calvin made at the start of the reaction. It's certainly no Gladiator, but I like the film for whatever reason as an easy-watcher. I'd enjoy that being in the rotation for reactions if the others/Aaron haven't seen it.
that being said, oscar isaac def chewed up some scenery as the petulant prince john
not sure, would have to watch the behind the scenes commentary again but I think the horse Russel Crowe rides in Robin is the same as the one he rides in the battle scene.
This is still my favorite movie ever. I still get teary eyed by the end
No shame in crying at the ending. It's one of the most emotional endings to a movie that I know of and it's the same here, always gets me.
fun fact: filmed mostly in Malta where the sequel is currently in pre production. Massive sets are being put up...
The actor from Game of Thrones who played Joffrey he used Jaquin Phoenix performance as a Template
Legendary Film
Rewatched this movie a few days ago since the sequel is already in pre-production. One thing I thought was how amazing it would be if you guys reacted to it and here we are!
They're doing s sequel? Bad idea. No one will ever be able to touch the role Crowe played. It's an almost perfect movie, if not perfect. Phoenix was brilliant too.
The soundtrack is one of the best soundtracks in film and I continue to regularly listen to it decades later.
Strength and honour.
I fucking love Gladiator. I always cry. Now, we are free
The end of this move gets me EVERY TIME. The music, "who will help me carry him?" just so good.
34:15 - Some of the greatest lines ever spoken in movies
Antonio Banderas is actually a Spaniard, lol. I've always liked him. I wonder what he would have done in the role. Russell Crowe was perfect though.
Such an amazing CLASSIC!!!! Great lines, characters, story and music!! TOO many cool moments to list!!!
Aaron writing down Daddy Issues should be a meme
This movie is such the perfect "peplum" classic. Love it. Seen it multiple times and will see it again.
Thank you for your vid as always!
I got distracted by the end but "and then John Cena kills Biden" out of context surely managed to pull me back, haha.
Actually(pushes glasses up) the emperors were called Augustus. When they started having junior emperors to rule alongside them they referred to the junior rulers as Caesar
Rick just earned + 100 respect from me. I’m from Italy and he knows way more about my country’s history than me. Fucking legend 💪🏻
I laughed when Rick said they didn't use the pilum in the opening battle. He's a big history dork like me and thought the same thing.
My respect for Rick is already maxed out, but I agree. He’s the best.
Great seeing Richard Harris I forgot he was in this lol. He'll always be my Dumbledore. R.I.P.
He will always be my King Arthur. Yes, I'm that old, lol.
Hans zimmer's soundtrack in this movie is so beautiful
I loved this movie when I first saw it. Like Rick, I know some history about the movie and the historical inaccuracy. I'm a history buff and I found out later about it how, Commodus is based on an emperor but not real. That gladiators didn't really fight to the death. They usually fought animals or each other but rarely died. And what people don't really notice, is that there were a few female gladiators though they were rare. But despite all the inaccuracies, I still give high praise to this movie, it's so iconic.
This film is like Braveheart in the historical stuff is questionable but none the less it's still a really enjoyable film.
So many quotable moments in this great film!
Calvin is me. I love him.
And Rick's shirt is kickass.
Fantastic movie, saw it for the first time when it first came out on VHS. The score is one of my all time favorite.
Isn’t the shirt the best! I have a black cat so I was like 😍 and Rick told me his daughter bought it for him which makes it all the more cuter!
You must either be quite Old or a real Movie Buff to reference "The Fall of the Roman Empire"!
@@jamesalexander5623 Movies buff..have you seen the cast in that film... it's amazing.
38:49 “HOW CAN HE SLAP?” funniest reference in this video lol
Such a finely acted, finely written film with a masterful Directing, Musical score and cinematography to boot...still .remains as my top 3 favorite ever. The acting ensemble is God tier
Hell yeah. Didn’t know I would appreciate this reaction happening
Now I want to watch Spartacus. Never saw anything pass the first season.
4:05 this scene is quite funny if you know Brazilian Portuguese, because he speaks in Germanic yes, BUT it sounds like “É assim que meu fusca andaaaaa” which roughly translates to “That’s how my VW beetle rides”
Thanks for coming to my useless Ted talk of the day
There are so many great things about this film, its greatest element being at its core a very basic story told many times before. I’ve seen/read interviews from those pitching the film, and laughing that it was a classic story of a man wronged and his family taken from him, and his journey to avenge them and then join them… but in Rome. A lot developed after this fact but that was the core idea. It’s a story as old as time but that is why it resonates, then add incredible dialogue, performances and musical score and you have a masterpiece.
the guy who went to stab maxmus at the beginning to kill him, thats also the invisible man in LOEG and he plays marcus in underworld. Good actor
I love this movie! I think I watched it about 6 times at the movie theater when it was released, I was soooo obsessed 😅 By the way, hello from Brazil, great content as always, guys 😃
One Easter egg I'll point out is the Germanic chanting in the beginning is from the movie Zulu though I have no idea where that tie-in comes from.
Still after so many years , a great film. gets me everytime :)
Glad that Rick pointed out gladiators were pretty much athletes and not cannon fodder for spectacles.
The end always gets me as well. Every time. The masterly written music combined with the depth of the sacrifices of the characters echoes in eternity
One of my top movies of all time. The soundtrack is the icing on the cake especially since I'm a fan of the female vocalist on the soundtrack. She's Lisa Gerard from the duo group "Dead Can Dance" whom I have been following for some time :-)
To echo some sentiments from elsewhere in the thread, if you want more of the same check out Rome and Spartacus
Rome: if you want high end HBO production value and a bunch of actors you’ll recognise from things like Game of Thrones or Star Wars (Rebels had no less than 3 of the main cast voicing Mandalorians, which had to be deliberate)
Spartacus: if you want the bloodiest, horniest series ever, and actors you’re more likely to recognise from the DC CW shows
Both a lot of fun :)
@@Beltims There was no chance Maximus would ever accept Commodus' offer, it would be against everything Maximus stands for.
Nothing tugs my heart strings more than Maximus declining the rule of Rome so that he could go home, and Caesar loving him for that, "That is why it must be you." It was Caesar's own way of saying, "Before you go home, can you save mine?"
That and Proximo's monologuing on the intensity of crowd roaring in the stands.
I'm so much like Calvin. Can't not bawl the entire end of the movie.
