Loosely based on a true story. TC spent nearly a year preparing for this role. A lot of people think that TC is The Last Samurai because he survived...he's not, it's Katsumoto.
While many people who know the culture of samurai well will tell you that there were alot of things inaccurate about this movie, they will also tell you they still appreciate this movie as it is the best movie ever in terms of honoring the samurai and what they stood for. Personally my favorite as well!
9:22 Look at it this way: If the guy can’t shoot him under pressure, Nathan has proven that they’re not ready for combat; if he can, no more nightmares… win/win!
So glad you watched this, as I said before this is my favorite movie of all time. Words can't explain how much this movie means to me. It's completely different from any movie I've seen, it's my comfort, my motivation and "religion". It tells me what's important in life, the thing that no matter what you can't give up in life even though there are many bad people and life is messed up sometimes... most importantly you should never forget your honour. Soundtrack here is... masterpiece. Hans Zimmer is my favorite composer and that's not surprising. That man is a legend and I'm so happy that he is part of my favorite movie. I've watched this movie like 5-10 times, maybe even more, same emotions every time. I like Tom Cruise but to me this is the most different movie he has done, it truly shows his acting skills and I loved it. Don't get me wrong he is great in other movies but most of the time its action movies without that much acting. This is definitely his best movie to me. To answer your question, yes, he did his stunts as always in this movie too. Also, the first time I watched it I thought Nathan was the last Samurai too but then... after watching couple times, the last Samurai is Katsumoto and Nathan tells his story. I have to add 1 more thing: I thought it would be better if Nathan died at first but then I realized, if he died nobody would be able to tell Katsumoto's story. Nathan got really close with Katsumoto and he was probably the only person who could tell his story that way, also what makes it even more impactful is how Katsumoto acted towards him, took care of him, made a true warrior out of him... Yes, those soldiers could've told the story of how Samurai fell but not how they lived and what they did. I will miss... our conversations...
The Last Samurai is my top favorite movie since it came out. I have watched it probably 20 times or more and always get emotional. Best story and movie I have ever seen.
@@mrflickswatchesgreetings from France Do you know that this film is based on the true story of Frenchman Jules Brunet who fought the Japanese Imperial Army alongside the last samurai and if you don't want to believe me, I invite you to go watch the video (the last samurai the true story)
the alternative ending you`re looking for "is" the ending. The narrator says that Nathan may have died from his wounds, no one knows, but that he would like to believe Nathan found peace. The narrator is a writer that even romanticizes scalping, so it would stand to reason he prefers the satisfying ending you`d find in a book, instead of the harshness of reality. The audience gets to choose to be comforted or realistic. Its a great ending and one of TCs best movies.
I wasn’t a fan of Tom Cruise until I saw this movie. He was so good in this movie but Ken Watanabe killed his performance. He was nominated for an Oscar for his performance. This is beautifully shot and the music score is just wonderful. I’m so happy you watched this amazing film.
Tom Cruise's character is not the last samurai. The title " The Last Samurai" is plural and is about the last samurai warriors who wanted to preserve the old ways and resisted the modernization of Japan (which has happened in real life, even though most of this movie is fiction). Just thought you might wanna know. 😁 Good reaction 👍
This film introduced me Ken Watanabe and Hiroyuki Sanada. This film has amazing cinematography when you add epic Hans Zimmer score: This is one the best epic adventure / action film when it comes just the mood of the film. Personally this in in my top 20 all time films and #1 Tom Cruise films.
Common mistake: Tom Cruise is NOT the last samurai. Ken Watanabe is the last samurai; Tom Cruise is the last warrior left that understood him, and told his tale to the Emperor, so that the ways of the samurai would be immortalized in Japanese culture through his sacrifice.
“How many times have you seen this movie and put it on your top list?” It’s at the very top, and I request this movie be replayed on my death bed, facts no xerox.
An interesting choice they made with this movie was, to help contrast the two armies, they neglected to mention that the samurai had guns and artillery and had been manufacturing guns in Japan for literally hundreds of years.
This movie is one of my top 10 favorite movies. I absolutely love the Japanese culture especially the Samurai in this era. It has to be my most favorite Tom Cruise movie.
I WAS a martial artist. I want to get back into it but I feel like I’m too old and overweight now. My teacher who taught me Taekwondo, actually came to my house years after I had to quit because my parents couldn’t afford it anymore, and basically begged me to rejoin because I was one of his best students. I regret not doing it.
I’ve always loved swords. And I recently bought Michonne’s katana. I’ve also got Jon Snow’s Long Claw, and Uhtred’s (The Last Kingdom) sword, Serpent- Breath. I’ve seen this movie several times. While it’s not in my top 10 it’s very good and has my favorite Japanese actor and swordsman, Hiroyuki Sanada.
To respond to all your questions x) : - I've never been in Japan yet, but I'm acutally going to in may 2024, really excited about it. - In my movie ranking, probably not in my top 10 since I've seen a freaking lot of movies, but still maybe in my top 20-30. For movies with Tom Cruise? This is my favorite. - I have 5 katanas, 3 swords, 1 short-sword, and 4 daggers. And I plan to have a lot more in the future XD (And I also have a cosplay Dane axe, which is double-handed in case you don't know. I would love sooo much to have a real one, big fan of the vikings). - And I think that you can partly shape your destiny, but that some parameters are out of your control (Like where you were born, the education you received, the skills that you can acquire or not even with work, etc. Or even things that you absolutely can't predict and avoid, like an accident for exemple).
Changing your destiny as depicted in movies such as this is fantasy. In real life people do amazing things by preparing and hard work and in many cases just luck. It’s nice to see in a movie and inspiring to see people like Desmond Doss who was an actual real person who performed amazing feats.
I think I've watched just about every reaction to this movie that's out there, and yours just went right to the top. I've seen some really good reactions, and others that were literally unwatchable due to the ignorance of the reactor (intentional or otherwise). I'm an American, but my heritage is Japanese, so I know that there are certain aspects and nuances of the culture which can be enigmatic to someone who isn't familiar with them. So first of all, kudos to Mr. Cruise and Mr. Zwick for capturing so much of that essence! And secondly, a huge thumbs up to you for picking up on it. You "got it" 100% in my opinion. (Maybe it was that sword you were holding?!😉) But I don't think I've heard any other reactor wonder, are they going to be OK with Nathan wearing the red armor at the end. Very well done!
The emperor was still a kid in the early part of the movie. In the ending scene, it shows that he aged which indicates that Tom stayed in the village for years. The movie also portrays that the emperor has matured; far wiser than before.
This is my favorite movie of all time, my friend!!!! Ah... to hope to see this for the first time... I appreciate that 'fun fact' drop, too! All the best, bro
21:55, heck yeah they good man. Anyone who covers my back while standing between my family and harm…we are all the way good. I think Katsumoto was shocked that his supposed prisoner would stand tall with his clan in that moment.
Love your reaction to this. It's one of my favourite Tom Cruise films. It's beautifully shot, choreographed and scored and everyone in it is amazing in their roles.
Guns have been used by the Japanese since before the time setting of the movie. The actual rebellion leader who Katsumoto is based upon was known to have a reputation of having some of the finest arquebusers (gunners) in all of Japan.
Yo little brother, first time seeing a reaction vid of yours but I hit that subscribe to see what else you do. Your a younger, darker version of myself. Lol. Respect to your kickboxing background, I'm a boxer myself. This movie is one of my all-time favs and you said it was your type of movie at the beginning.. I highly suggest if you haven't already seen, watch Dances with Wolves, Braveheart and Gladiator. I'm guessing your most moved by stories of the human spirit, these will not disappoint. Great work, keep it up. 😎👍💯🔥
Ken Watanabe was totally wasted in Batman Begins. TLS was his first English language movie, and he got an Oscar nomination for it!! Sanada is also awesome - very good in The White Countess and in John Wick 4. Zimmer's music and the New Zealand countryside (where filming took place) are breathtaking.
Dude you just won a new subscriber, please keep continue with the historycal information, every time when you have the chance and the knowledge! Something different
I appreciate your perspective of ugliness. You and I are on exactly the same page: ugly isn't how someone looks, but how they behave. Ya, pretty sure this is my fav TC film. Thank you for reacting to it.
Wanna know something dope? This movie is reaaaaaaaaally loved IN JAPAN. That's pretty rare -- an American movie that has that connection with the real people and their history. Pretty cool IMO
Top 10 best films all time for me, and Toms best ever performance! Something as simple as You have been kind to me ..... I will not forget. He delivers it so diligently you forget its Tom Cruise all you see is the character you feel the meaning behind those words in his delivery!
Katsumoto was such a great leader, with the right values. It took so long for the Emperor to change his mind, if he did it earlier, the samurais could live. This was not a war to protect the country from physical harm, but from bad decisions.
In actual history it was not an American Soldier but a French Officer and they won there war! Some decades later the Samurai style lost favor you know the rest of the tale!
This movie is a Japanese version of Dances with Wolf. Replace the Japanese warriors with the Lakota Indians and Tom Cruise with Kevin Costner. There you have it. If you have not seen it, you may want to look into it.
I've only seen the movie once. It's very moving, but I wouldn't rank it among my favorites. Not even among the top Cruise movies, but that's just a testament to the quality of all his movies I do have one sword, a full scale replica of Anduril, Aragorn's sword from Return of the King. It's only a display piece, too fancy to sharpen it or bang it against other things, but I love it, and it's so fun to swing the massive thing around in the air
I'll just respond as I go through the video😂 While on set, Cruise is known for being laid back at times and very intense at other times. While some see this as just his passion for the movie, and that's likely true, I can also definitely understand why that would be intimidating to be around lol. I'd probably be scared too if he lost his cool and yelled at me on the spot for not doing something the way he wanted it on the set. The only ones not intimidated by it are the other actors, directors, etc, who aren't at any real risk by his anger. So basically, he's chill most of the time, but his mood can switch in an instant, which would be very intimidating to be around all day
I have a regular Stainless Steel Katana, but it’s full tang and pretty sturdy considering. I also have some Chinese Hook swords and a replica of Sephiroth’s Masamune.
One of my favorite movies, one thing though, I think it could've done without the love theme, maybe a close friendship would've been better. As great as Cruise was in this film, it's Katsumoto's character that made this movie genuine.
You should watch the 2 greatest samurai movies of all time - "The Seven Samurai" (1954), and "Harakiri" (1962). Personally, I have "Harakiri" at the top of the list. Yes, Seven Samurai is great, but Harakiri has scenes that will stay with you forever, and the messages are far deeper.
I’ve seen this movie probably 1000 times and it’s in my Top 10. I love Tom Cruise movies but only two are in the 10. This and Interview with a Vampire. I actually own a replica of Tom’s katana that he’s gifted before the battle. I also have a set of sais, a machete sword, and 2 recurve bows. The katana is an elegant, beautiful weapon that is used for peace, not war.
movies like this should teach you to not judge or assume about other cultures and countries that you are not familiar with or have great amount of knowledge of and why they work the way they do and do the things they do and not to mention just people in general
I've seen this movie thousands of times and it's probably top 7-10 for me, my favorite Tom Cruise movie the Samurai is considered the greatest warriors ever because there discipline and honor plus the Samurai sword is the sharpest sword ever made and the most durable also
I respect everyone who really belive in this movie! This movie changed my life and I not exaggerating! Belive me lads, the run for money it's not everything in life, sometimes you just need to feel
Its my fav movie of all time. I have seen it many times. Fyi: Samurai is also in plural. So either its Katsumoto thats the last Samurai or its all of them. No the whole point of the ending is "(he) found some small meassure of peace, that we all seek, but few of us ever find". You cant take that line out. Btw Cruise is regarded as the hardest working actor on sets in Hollywood. And he expects the same commitment from everyone involved. Now thats said there is only 1 actress thats said something negative about him and thats that girl from MI2 (dont remember her name). Everyone Else absolutely loves him and cant say enough good things. Just look at Henry Cavill, Simon Pegg etc of what they have said about him. And even Matt Damon that havent worked with him but of course have met him. *destiny: no, look at the definition. Its a reason its called destiny. I tell you, you cant change it. I think it is as Nathan sais it, you do what you do until your destiny is revealed.
It is based on the Satsuma rebellion. 500 Samurai stood against 30.000 imperial troops, outnumbered 60 to 1. The last samurai is Saigo Takamori. May he be remembered always. 🙇♂️
Look at this unique interview > I Spent a Week with Japan's BIGGEST Movie Star | Ken Watanabe . Also , an early film with him in it is " Tampopo " a mild comedy on how to make the best Ramen ever .
Hey man, if you’re a gamer, I suggest you download (or get if you still have an old Xbox or ps2) Onimusha. Fantastic game. Set in feudal Japan and has demons and such. You play as Samanosuke, a samurai in red armor, and his partner Kaede, a kunoichi (female ninja)
I got called a "race traitor" for liking this film as a kid....I was surrounded by some pretty broken people growing up, I know. The entire concept of Whites, Blacks, Hispanics, and Asians getting along and caring about each other.......unheard of in my generation. A White Man Kissing an Asian woman??? It was "a defiling" of our Races.... Old Asian Men would get mad at me and old White women would get mad at me.... I didn't know what I was doing wrong, because the other half of my family believed in the concept of "The Brotherhood of Mankind", which meant that God created us all, therefore we all deserve the same dignity and respect. Hnnngh. (
This was a real period in Japan and many think it planted the seeds for WW2. They transitioned from warlords to an industrial nation with dreams of empire. Later they ocupied a cunk of China and wiped out two Russian fleets. The US stood in thier way for further expasion when they hit us on Dec. 7, 1941 in Pearl Harbour.
Your destiny is your destiny. It cannot be changed. You might think you can change it and you take a different path to make that change but in reality, that is exactly what you were supposed to do. Since none of us actually know what our destiny is, whatever you think it is, is most likely not what it is. You may think you are changing things, but you are actually taking more steps towards your destiny.
Not at all. It's tempting to think that way because the stereotypes say samurais were about honor and ninjas can be seen as dishonorable, but the most important part of honor is serving your lord faithfully. The word "samurai" comes from the word "to serve" after all. So spying, deception, ambush, assassination, all were okay as long as they served your lord's goals. Most, if not all ninjas were also samurai. Maybe during peacetime, certain samurai traditions became intertwined with buddhist practices and this skewed the perception of what it means to be a samurai. Certainly decades of film and videogames like ghost of tsushima have helped perpetuate this false narrative.
I think this is Tom Cruise’s finest film. Sits comfortable in my top 5 all time. Infinite rewatchability.
"I will tell you how he lived."
That line gets me everytime.
Loosely based on a true story. TC spent nearly a year preparing for this role. A lot of people think that TC is The Last Samurai because he survived...he's not, it's Katsumoto.

Samurai always carried two swords, a regular sized Katana, and a shorter Wakizashi.
14:21 - Tom's neck is really injured. The sword was real - luckily for him Hiroyuki Sanada is excellent with the blade.

Yes, Tom Cruise did his own stunts in this movie. He almost died in one of the scenes due to a mishap with a mechanical horse and a sword.

I got a replica of a katana my wife got me on a business trip to Japan over 20 years ago
Great reaction brotha my first time seeing you, and you are hilarious and have that honorable spirit keep making great reactions like this
One of my favorite movies, one thing though, I think it could've done without the love theme, maybe a close friendship would've been better.
I feel for me this is Toms best movie with Top Gun Maverick a close second!
One of my top favorite movies of all time AND IMHO, Tom Cruise's greatest film.
I Love this movie! 47 Ronin with Keanu Reeves is good too!
Top 15 movie in my opinion. Top 3 for TC movies. Ive seen this film probably between 25-35 times
Good commentary, brother! I'd love to sit and do a MST3K with you on a video.
Mr Flicks thanks my Bro, the Last Samurai it's a great movie
Dude love the reaction
my fav movie
I spent three years in Japan with the Navy. I’d love to go back!
Nice!! I have to go one day
movies like this should teach you to not judge or assume about other cultures and countries that you are not familiar with or have great amount of knowledge of and why they work the way they do and do the things they do and not to mention just people in general
I've seen this movie thousands of times and it's probably top 7-10 for me, my favorite Tom Cruise movie the Samurai is considered the greatest warriors ever because there discipline and honor plus the Samurai sword is the sharpest sword ever made and the most durable also
First name, Sonya, last name, Blade.
I respect everyone who really belive in this movie! This movie changed my life and I not exaggerating! Belive me lads, the run for money it's not everything in life, sometimes you just need to feel
Hope They are usable too , the Beauty is there !
don´t have a Katana but a Razorsharp Wakizashi , the shorter Sidearm 👊👍
Top 3 movie all time right there
Have three katanas practice, and take martial arts too. Love bro
This is in my top 5 favorites for sure
Look at this unique interview > I Spent a Week with Japan's BIGGEST Movie Star | Ken Watanabe . Also , an early film with him in it is " Tampopo " a mild comedy on how to make the best Ramen ever .
Hey man, if you’re a gamer, I suggest you download (or get if you still have an old Xbox or ps2) Onimusha. Fantastic game. Set in feudal Japan and has demons and such. You play as Samanosuke, a samurai in red armor, and his partner Kaede, a kunoichi (female ninja)
I think this is Wormtail aka Peter Pettigrew from Harry Potter
33:30 Your comment about arrows raining from the sky made me wonder if you have seen the movie '300' with Gerard Butler?
I have yes love that movie
I cant believe you named the sword sonya lol not bad
“Sonya.. will put it on ya”💪🏽 lol
Hnnngh. (
Kill Bill is a yes lol
* yes on swords. One is a katana and the other is ironically a Calvary sword.
Those were in fact Ninjas who attacked Katsumoto. Samurai and Ninjas were arch enemies in those times. Great reaction too!!
Certainly decades of film and videogames like ghost of tsushima have helped perpetuate this false narrative.
i love this film i also like japanese culture and i love anime basted on history with samurai weather its true story or not
