    what i think you forgot to say is to start training the dog by leaving them alone for a few seconds and slowly increase the time and not just leave them for 8 hours straight...
    but nevertheless really really helpful video!

      MsBlubermuffin Exactly. And this needs to start when they are pups. I am lucky and have never had this issue with any of my dogs. And I have owned GSDs for 33 years.

      Mona B that's not really helpful for someone who adopts older dogs. My dogs would be in the pound of anyone else had them. my newest just chewed up my 700 dollar phone. Not his fault obviously, I left it where he could reach it, but we've had to go back to square one with the coonhound baying in the crate, and I have to leave him for eight hours while I'm at work. I don't get the option to play "who loves the crate" with him. It's his safety that matters.

      @@redsquirrel6131 could you not build an outside kennel so at least your dogs outside an maybe distracted more by bird N the outside world rather than create? I'm not judging I'm just wondering is all. I'm on building an outside kennel for a rescue I have taken in he hates other dogs so can't live indoors but he will be walked an I will be bringing him indoors also I just have to swop dogs over is all. Same routine just a small adjustment.

      @@doubletap1189 I potentially could do that but he's a full grown bluetick, he is VERY loud. My neighbor males sure to remind me of that weekly. Lolz. Also my town is not safe for dogs left alone. Even if I padlocked the enclosure, we have alot of mental health issues here, as we provide care for those with mental dissabilities at a large rate. So dogs are routinely poisoned, stolen, or injured purposely. I dont even let my dogs out to pee in our fenced in backyard without watching closely. So no I'm not really comfortable with leaving him outside. I'm beginning to believe his crate hate is more boredom than actual anxiety. So we will be crating him separate from our other two and giving him frozen kongs and things to chew on to keep his little mind busy. He's doing great otherwise.

I hope it all works out for you an sure it will. Just another tip though I am sure you will have already though of it don't leave collars on your pup as they can get caught an unfortunately hang themselves I am very strict with this rule as an accident nearly happened with one of mine an my ex partners dogs was a freak accident but still made me think, our young pup was standing under our older pup an she got her neck in his collar too it happened in a split second but when he lifted his head well she started to be choked it was horrible but we got her out straight away. After that an hearing some scary stories about other dog I just won't have collars on in the house it's not worth it. But anyway I hope you get to where you want to be with your pups.

I leave for 10 minutes and leave him with my family and he goes crazy and then when I come back he pees of excitement even if I take him out to pee beforehand. Just seeing other people’s comments gives me hope. My dog has horrible separation anxiety. I’ve always lived close to my family & had their help with him, but I just moved to a new city with my fiancé & have no help. I can’t even leave to go to the store for 20 min without him freaking out, using the bathroom in the house (he hasn’t done that since he was a puppy), barking, etc. I thought having our other dog with him would give him a ton of comfort, but no. I feel so sorry for him. I’m hoping something will work!!

    • @robin212212

      1. Use a crate when he is alone 2. Use a bark collar. He needs something to interrupt his panic attacks (which is what SA is) so he learns to self calm himself. Or have him get used to being in a crate when you are inside, and when he gets into SA say NO and bang on the crate to get him to settle down.

    Thanks for mentioning giving the dog exercise. Most trainers just seem to ignore that fact. Most people “think” just taking he dog out is enough... Most dogs are stressed and act up simply because they have to much energy and NOTHING to do. I take my dog out for a walk when he starts acting up (one of he few times he leads and sniffs around) and then he sleeps or plays on his own the rest of he time.
    A LOT of people that have a dog should have a cat...but mostly they think they can fix the problem with another dog.

    Now I realized I've made some mistakes when leaving and entering the house. Almost every time I enter, I caress him, hug him and spend 30 minutes playing with him. And when I leave in the morning he's in a playful mood and not in a calm mood. He manifests anxiety for 2 days only, however I can't encourage this behavior due to the fact that we live in an appartment and I don't want to disturb my neighbours. What's odd is that he whines and barks only when I leave or when my husband and I leave together, when I'm already gone and my husband is back home then leaving again, there is no such behavior. Maybe it's all because I spoiled him too much. I believe I have to work on myself on leaving/entering and Oskar's behavior will adjust accordingly.

  • @pandasunflowers7200

    This was good information. After recently moving into our first home, my 5 year old setter has a hard time adjusting. When I leave, she howls for hours on end for us to come home. And when we do come home, she goes crazy with excitement. So I've begun to take her back to my moms every day when we leave. Granted it's very helpful, but it's also a pain. So with this video and your tips and tricks, I am hoping that I see a difference in her and that I can finally break this issue.

    There is something I heard a while back about dogs separation anxiety and it gave me a different perspective on what they are experiencing. It said that until relatively recently when man left the countryside to go to work in the city, dogs never left our side on the family farm. They went to work with us on that farm and watched over us just outside our front door or at our bedside as we slept. This has been the case since we domesticated "man's best friend" thousands of years ago. So it's actually unnatural for these amazing creatures to be away from us for any amount of time, much less the 8-10 hours they are separated from modern man while he goes off to work at a 9-5 job. . . . After I heard this explanation it broke my heart and gave me empathy for all dogs who experience separation anxiety. Now, whenever I'm away from my dogs I try and let them know I love and miss them too. They love us unconditionally and want nothing more than to be by our side, just like the good old days. There's a reason why they say "All Dogs Go To Heaven" and that is because they are all about love!

    • @randomhuman3525
      @randomhuman3525 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Lily Tse show the dog that as you are leaving, he gets rewarded. Any cues they might associate with you leaving the room, coats, keys, etc, give treats. Do exercises where you get up, pretend you are leaving, but just give the dog a treat. If you have the toy/bone while doing these exercises, hopefully the dog will get better and better at staying with the bone as you leave. Try to see at what point does your dog stop using the toy/bone, and work with that by coming back BEFORE he starts whining or BEFORE he leaves the toy. It could also not be a high enough treat value. It might help with doing exercises as you are leaving periodically throughout the day, letting your dog have the bone for a small time. If your dog isn’t very treat motivated then this might not be the best thought. Then again they could just be picky and it’s about finding the right toy/bone.
      Also, this could not be separation anxiety, and your dog might just stop whining after a while. Even then this will help to calm him down right as you are leaving
      Again though, do the small exercises frequently and slowly increase the amount of time you are away

      @@afonsomendes92 sadly that's not the case. I have a fear reactive dog (she just freezes or wants to run away, no agression) and when she gets anxious outside about anything, she won't even take the world's tastiest treat, because anxiety has overtaken the dog and she can't focus on anything else but her fear. Same goes with separation anxiety - the dog is so stressed that even a steak right under its nose won't do the trick. Good food helps with only mild separation anxiety, but not severe.

      @@afonsomendes92 I take it, you haven't had a reactive dog. A stressed dog will immediately stop taking treats when it gets stressed (even when they are offered before the stressor appears), because its attention is getting focused on stressor. Let's put it this way: if you are eating the best food ever and a bear would suddenly coming to attack you, finishing the food is the last of your concerns and your attention goes from food to escaping the situation.

    I also heard that the type of crate you leave them in makes a difference. They like to feel safe and secure. A cave-like crate that isn't too big for them. A darker area that is cozy for them. Also, NEVER use the kennel as punishment. Don't threaten the dog with going into the crate. The crate should always be his/her safe place. Leave the door open when you are home and make it so they can always go in there when they want to.

    these tips are very helpful. we adopted a 3yr old dog from the shelter who we have found out has separation anxiety. the main problem is she has heartworms (we knew this before we adopted), she was the sweetest dog and a perfect fit for us, so we decided to treat her. the exercise part is a problem, because bshe has to have limited activity, so she has so much energy built up. she has to stay calm and quieter (which absolutely does not happen when she's alone). she goes insane while alone, won't eat or drink, won't play with toys and barks constantly. I'm hoping most of these tips will help. originally we had a gate set up so she could have the whole kitchen to roam with a dog bed, etc. well I got the extra tall gate and she jumped it last night. pee poop everywhere, curtains torn down. disaster. we will have to try a crate next, hopefully it doesn't make it worse. we will slowly build up to it and use these tips to help, really hope this works out well in time.

      Look at the words you have used "your dog won't allow you" you the pack leader you have to show her it's ok to just chill. You let you dog know when it's time for a cuddle and so on you need to have a look at training from scratch with your dogs behaviour as at the moment your dog sounds like it's calling the shots. Just try totally ignoring your dog when you come in the house til your dog is calm then once it's calm you give the hello but calmly not over th let top just a little hello then stop just give small hellos an no bye like in the video. Also maybe get a trainer in tk help if your really struggling. I hope you get sorted out.

      When a dog jumps on you, turn your back. Hold your ground and keep turning your back until it settles down. This is how they ignore each other. It may take a while, but she'll get it. Don't show her any attention until she calms down and settles or sits, then calmly praise her. Might take like a week but I got a Pit Bull puppy to never jump on me or even bark when I came home.

    Just giving your dog calming stuff, putting them in a comfy crate, giving them bones, etc, is just like putting a bandaid on a bullet-hole most of the time.
    If you guys have tried what he is saying, but still have problems, there are other exercises to help. This video is really good with getting an understanding of what is going on, but doesn’t go into detail about how exactly you train and gradually teach your dog. Sure, YOU could be doing everything right and giving your dog a good, relaxing, environment, enough exercise, toys/bones etc, but it might not be enough for dogs that are already struggling with separation anxiety. Just doing these things is, again, like putting a bandaid on a bullet-hole, but in order to get to the main root of the problem and stop the separation anxiety, there are training exercises that really help.
    Associate cues like keys or putting on shoes/coats with treats. Do small things like picking up the keys, give treat. Work your way up to opening/ walking out the door. Hopefully your dog shouldn’t be whining at all. Having a special bone associated with leaving helps to. Like he mentioned, it gives them something to do.
    If your dog leaves the bone/toy as soon as you leave, then work your way up. Find exactly when your dog is leaving the bone/toy, and gradually try to get that time your dog spends with the bone/toy longer and longer. Do the exercise over and over, going back and praising when your dog is calm and chewing. Go out the door, and then come back repeatedly, trying to keep your dog on the bone each round. Try to get your dog to stay chewing.
    Also, Make sure the dog ISN’T whining when you these exercises. If you are going out the door and they are whining you should probably take a step back. You want to avoid the whining at ALL for these exercises. Again, build your way up, whether it’s with keys, coat, that schedule thing, etc. Come back and reward BEFORE your dog leave the bone, or starts whining.
    Again, good video he knows what he is talking about, but I can imagine this not doing much. Especially just resorting to giving your dog medications. It doesn’t NEED to go that far yet, especially if it is a pup. Training your dog, working with them and trying other methods and THEN if he still gets a little stressed, they might need that medication when it is clear it’s a real bad problem. It doesn’t need to be a last resort, but at the same time please don’t just immediately run to it expecting it to solve all your problems, not that thats bad, just not helpful probably.

    Great video. Two suggestions.viewers can try are a misting aromatherapy diffuser or a nebulizer with a timer and atomize lavender essential oil into the room. Both devices are safe to run when you’re away. Also check out Michael Tyrell’s Wholetones music which has a frequency that helps calm.dogs. So enjoying all your videos. Sandy

    Cbd is good for calming. I realized it was a side effect when using it for my dogs cancer. But on the 4th of july week or opening day of shot gun hunting (we live in a rural valley) he had to have actual valium so he didn't hurt himself trying to hide from loud noises.

    I took my puppy from a dog foster home about a year ago. I love him to bits; he has a great personality, and I feel that he loves our family so much, but he barks A LOT... So, leaving home is always a challenge for us. My husband and I were thinking about taking him to 'doggy school', but then again, it’s extremely expensive, and the nearest 'doggy school' is far away from us. Maybe you have some advice? THANK YOU!!!

    I adopted my dog from a shelter at 5 years old. He is a boxer mix. When I have left him alone at my house, he has put holes in the screens on the windows and messed up some of the blinds, so I decided to try keeping him in a nice, big metal crate. My dog must've tried head butting the crate or chewing a bit but the crate was okay, just a little bent, so I got a bunch of zipties and ziptied every piece of that crate, then I let my dog in and left for a few hours and he chewed the metal crate, through the zipties. Ever since then, I've been taking him to my boyfriend's moms house during the day and he does good there because they have a huge backyard with a doggy door to come inside but he jumps on the counters there and gets into trash. He doesnt do that at my house because he knows his boundaries, but there at their house, they feed him from the table, bring him human food and I think that's why he does it there. I am going to try these tips and tricks with him because I want to be able for him to be at home where he is most comfortable. Any more ideas please let me know!

    My dog, is the dog that won’t even eat when I’m gone . She barks non stop and howls, than rips apart anything in her sight. She’s on anxiety meds and it DOESNT work. When I get home I don’t even pay attention to her jumping on me. It’s so hard because I hate coming home to torn up stuff, or she’s out of breathe from barking and going crazy. I’ve tried a thunder vest, I’ve tried the puzzle treats and now the meds, and nothing is working. I’ll try the lavender oil and classical music next.

  • @studyofgaming9707
    @studyofgaming9707 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I’ve had my rescue for about 4 years and every time I move (recently an ex and his dog leaving us the house) his anxiety goes through the roof. He has destroyed my blinds, curtains, torn my rugs, and jumped out the window to escape being trapped in the house.
    Things that have helped.
    - Kong balls are a necessity. I stuff lemur butter in the far back, then shove a dog street in the front that kinda “clogs” the kong ball, making it harder to get to.
    - thunder shirts are a life saver. My dog wears one about half of the time. The sense of tightness helped relax dogs.
    - I leave a TV on when I leave. I haven’t tried classical music. I’ll have to try it.
    It’s not s perfect list, and any major change surges his anxiety.
    My last resort is to use YUCK! Bitter spray (I’m not a fan of negative reinforcement) I spray it on the wooden frames to my doors that he tends to chew through. It’s usually enough to prevent him for small trips away.
    I’ve used medication in the past to help my dog ease his anxiety during transitions, but only as a last resort. It does not fix the issue, but it’s s good baseline. Especially after move.

    • @iexist1738
      @iexist1738 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The YUCK! is actually a really good idea. You spray it, dog chews it, it tastes bad, ok now I know not to chew that again because it tastes bad, I will just use my toys instead. And he doesn’t associate the punishment when he chews the wood on you, he blames it on the thing he’s chewing so he’s not scared of you.

    I’m a stepmother to a 5 year old husky. We have to take him EVERYWHERE when we leave. And it sucks because we can’t always keep him in the car to run errands .. and if we leave him home he will pee / poop all over the place & tear things up from time to time. He cries constantly & scratches up the door trying to get out.. we tried crating him and he hurts himself by scratching the cage. So we can’t even do that. It’s so bad when we get back he is shaking so bad & crying in excitement that we’re back.. someone told us to get another dog to help him stay occupied and since huskies are pack dogs. But I’m afraid if I get a puppy / dog... it will learn to have anxiety and think using the bathroom inside is ok to do. We have tried all types of anxiety meds / treats , even his favorite toys / bones. He will ignore any type of food / toys... & no medication seems to work. it’s THAT bad..
    lavender doesn’t help. Music / tv doesn’t help. We have tried absolutely everything you can think of. No joke. Everything on this list. Including taking him for a 1/2 hour walk/ run. If we let him outside he will cry to come in. He hates being alone. And nothing helps.

      We have the SAME PROBLEM with our 5 yr old GSD/Husky mix! He's like Marley from "Marley & Me"! We can't crate him, he'll destroy it and injure himself. Our Teacup Yorkie puts him in his place, but we're afraid one day he'll bite her. We're going to try all of these techniques! Thanks!

    • @loganhuff4657
      @loganhuff4657 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don’t know if it’s too late, but start with a crate- then when she thinks “oh, they’re gone but they’ll be back and I’m fine here!” Then leave her in the room alone. Then step it up again. I personally keep my pug in a crate because he’s okay with a crate but if I leave him behind a door he scrapes it until he’s got splinters in his paws.

    There's a lot of people in the comments saying they can't do stuff cuz of sepearation anxiety, try following these guide lines, and you'll be fine. Exercise is way more important than what most people think, 10 minute walk each morning isn't gonna cut it, the reason he might get attached more to you than others is that you simply give him what others in the family don't. Which is leadership. We can go and talk about if that's a thing or not in the dog world but it simply is. By getting your first child, your giving leadership in one way, same has to go for the dog, you need rules in the house and outside. Give him what he NEEDS and you'll get what you want. Very very simple, yet many don't understand.
    Also, don't get a dog because of an impulse decision. Dogs are a lot more work than what it seems, and everyone who's going to be responsable for the dog, needs to agree on EVERYTHING.

    I have a 4 month old puppy (turning 5 month in 3 days) with really bad separation anxiety. He didn't have it AS bad before but a little over a week ago he fell and broke his front leg and needed surgery so he had to stay at the vets for about 2-3 days, after this his anxiety has gotten so much worse and it's just with me. It's gotten to the point where he doesn't let anyone else hold him and even just him being next to me in his kennel causes him to freak out and flip his shit. The vets sent me some medication to give him for when it's time to sleep but during the day I can't do anything without holding him. From the day I got him I started working on his anxiety and he used to be fine with me leaving for school and being in his crate but now all of that basically went out the window and he is 10x worse than before. It's really hard because he is supposed to be in complete cage rest but he won't stay calm unless I'm literally holding him all the time. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!
