RNF '96 Fish Surfboard
…Lost helped reinvent the fish in the mid-1990s, combining design elements pioneered by Steve Lis in the ’70s with modern tweaks that essentially started the hybrid movement (comprehensively documented in the seminal film 5'5" x 19 1/4".
The RNF ’96 is a throwback tribute to those early boards ridden by Cory Lopez and Chris Ward, with minor refinements to make them ride even better.
These boards represent everything that is fun about shortboarding. They are short, stubby, wide, and flat-rockered, giving them tons of speed no matter what the wave does.
At the same time, the modern refinements allow them to be surfed in a high-performance manner that belies their traditional roots.
The 2+1 fin setup provides options, depending on what the waves are doing and how you feel on any given day. Surf it as a twin, a single fin, or a 2+1.

RNF 96 is best board ever. I have 3 of them. It can’t do any wrong.
Awesome Mike! What sizes do you have? and where are you surfing it?
@@hawaiiansouthshore I’m 5’11 about 165/170ish, I ride the 5’8. I have a 5’7 too. I have two 5’8s, a black sheep and pu, and the light speed in 5’7. Not a huge fan of the 5’7. Maybe it’s the construction or maybe it’s the loss of an inch on my rail line. Not sure. I’ve had to play with fins quite a bit more to enjoy it though. It’s fun occasionally and then it occasionally I feel like it has less protection. I’m not quite sure what to make of it. I had MRs plus trailer on it, felt like it was too much drag. Went with some medium thrusters, that’s a bit better I suppose. I want to try H4s or maybe I just need to ride it as a strict twin. 🤷🏽♂️🤷🏽♂️🤷🏽♂️ All I know is my RNF rips all winter in double over. I surf Kahalu’u mostly, it’s two seconds from my house. It’s ledgy and fast, and medium heavy. You’re getting in way under it right on the shelf on good days. You ain’t paddling in from the top. But the board works well.
@@mikeuptegrove wow ! Do you prefer pu or lightspeed and why please ?
@@mikeuptegrove just bought a used 5'7" havent tried it yet
My man hit em with the Master P 'uuuuuhhhhhghhhh' 😂 2:04
Have the 5'7, Im 5'11 about 160lbs. Goes insane when the waves have a bit of power and shoulder high or above but back foot needs to be planted all the ways back, it's a little unforgiving in that sense. Best fish shape I've surfed backside (surfing 30 yrs).
Oh right on!!! - David
