  • Homesteading got you feeling overwhelmed? Too much to do, too little time? I know how you feel. It's that time of year again when we step back and take a look at where we're headed. We want to do even better than last year. What will be next on the homestead? How will we manage it all?

    I've been impressed with your YT channel, specifically because you're not "perfect", whatever THAT is, so you're coming across as very real and human. I find many YT channels are boring not because of content, but because they don't show the real struggle we all go through. I have lived on my property for longer than I can even believe, since I was 7 years old (I am now 73), and I STILL struggle with meeting my goals, with the weeds, and getting my food preserved, all of it. This year, everything was hit by flooding in Vermont, so I won't even GO there. I'll just say that my garden has seen better years, ha ha!
    But your personalities shine through in your videos, and that is what will make people gravitate to your channel, I believe. By the way, I just subscribed to your channel, because it's real. Carry on, guys!

    I just found your channel recently and came across this video. Making jerky is one of my favorites when we butcher rabbits. I make a salt brine and soak the belly meat and thinly slice the back strap unrolling it to make a large piece. After brining for half a day at least, I season to taste and put in the dehydrator overnight. Checking on it to see the consistency and flipping it over partway in the drying process.

    I farmed for 45 years. (I'm 71 now and a useless eater. 🙂) Anyway, I just found your channel and it's top of the line stuff. Now I just 'farm' a big garden. If I can keep the grizzlies out, I'm doing good! A tip on planting young pine trees - water the hell out of them, and don't think snow will water them in winter, But my main tip is to kill all grass at least 3 feet all the way around them. When they are little, the grasses take up all the moisture and nutrients. If you notice big pine trees on lawns, the lawns are dead under them. Shade is a factor but that big tree takes all the moisture and nutrients from the grass. We can, root cellar, dehydrate, etc. One thing I haven't seen you guys do is a freeze dryer. I know - the EXPENSE!! I was the same - until I got one. Talk about making the dehydrator obsolete. The big advantage is not needing so much freezer space and even a root cellar. People are freeze drying stuff in their freezers before freezer burn gets it! A Christmas idea - one year Dad got Mom an engraved saddle for Christmas. She was so impressed that she got him a nice sewing machine for Fathers Day. Cheers! :-)

      @@morethanfarmers we are homeschooling our kids now and last night my husband and I were discussing that one of the biggest challenges we have found is lunch ideas for the kids. Healthy meals that they will actually eat. I would love to see more of what you guys eat throughout the day. ❤️ Also some tips on starting a homesteading TH-cam channel. I really want to start a channel documenting our journey but have no idea where to start.

    • @morethanfarmers
      @morethanfarmers  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@keeramitrokli5486 Sorry, it took me awhile to get back to this one. It can be really hard to please the kids, we know 😏 We'll see about a video on that. As far as a YT channel goes... Start by watching channels that you want to "be like". Look beyond face value and learn as much as you can about how they keep you watching. I started out taking the "Create Your Blog Dream" course by Lisa Bass from Farmhouse on Boone. She also has a YT course. It was good to get started, but some of her ideas were a little outdated. I'd really recommend the "30 Days to a Better TH-cam channel" course by Video Creators. And listen to podcasts. I listen to Video Creators, Think Media, and VidIQ. I've gone back and listened to a lot of past episodes. I've drenched myself in TH-cam information. To the point where I had to step back. But I learned a ton. If I hadn't done that our channel wouldn't be where it is today. And then you just gotta start. Your first videos will be your worst videos. I totally cringe at my first 30+ videos, slightly cringe at the ones after that, and will probably cringe at my most recent ones in 6 months 😉 It's a lot harder than I thought it would be! But, like most hard things it's rewarding. Let me know when you've got a couple videos out and I'll take a look 😊😊 Good luck!

To this day I love the Chili Recipe with the Chili powder and cumin powder. You can even just make a veggie and bean chili no meat. Dutch Oven Chicken is my favorite and I add the Sweet Potatos and celery in 1 hour befor done. Chicken is only done when the chicken leg bone comes out of socket " Effortlessly !
    If you have to tug - It is not cooked. The oven roasting juices make excellent Chicken broth which in a refrigerated state should be like jello. Low temperature roasting in Dutch oven is fun. I love your channel !

    Hey, thanks for sharing guys> I am a also a Christian looking forward to living off the grid cultivating, having chickens, rabbits or whatever is more simple to start with. I want to get away from the upcoming world government controlling up with digital tokens, currency, gps systems & a chip on the hand (no beast system on my part), so do you also plan to have some space for people to invest in as pioneers, put a tiny house in, etc.? I want to go off the grid with solar panels, wood stoves, water from the well or a river, no electricity or dependence on the government or in this case on the world order of things, adhere to it or die or not being able to buy or sell anything. I really love the Colorado, South Utah canyon areas with some water. Any ideas or suggestions? I heard that raising chickens, hens & rabbits is easier than cows or goats. I am willing to invest, as long as it will not be tracked down ... originally a French Canadian from Montreal, Quebec, living in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, in the prairies for the last 25 years.

      I really don't think there will be any way to hide from whatever is coming. Our goal is to do our best with where we're at. We don't consider ourselves preppers. The kind of "prepping" we would fall into is just being prepared for some natural disasters or a bad economy. What we're doing could be helpful in those situations, but in a total world collapse or Revelation type situation I don't think any amount of canned goods or off-grid living will be much protection. The thing to remember is that we as Christians have far more protection in Jesus than we can ever come up with on our own. This world is not our home. Blessings on your journey.

I also watch @ImaSurvivorSanctuary who rescue animals and knows A LOT about video content. They are both down to earth and very friendly people. I bet they could give you lots of helpful information if you reached out to them. Good luck with your homesteading and videos.

    As I wrote yesterday, I'm so glad I found your channel on youtube. You are such a sweet couple and I have already learned from you. We started running our small farm 10 years ago when we were both 50 years old. We have no regrets, We are fine, but we still have something to learn. You guys are amazing, I love your channel and am already spending so much time watching your videos. I always dreamed of homeschooling my kids, but that's not allowed in Germany. I still dream of homeschooling my grandchildren. I send you warm greetings from Germany and look forward to your videos. God protect you and your children.

    I absolutely love your dynamic. There are very few homestead channels that include both husband and wife (especially in the same episode, rather than each doing their own) and I love the energy between the two of you. Even if I'm not interested in anything that you're doing at the time, even if you're preparing foods that aren't foods to me, the relationship between the two of you and the relationships between you and your children is such a fun, positive and lively thing to watch. I appreciate your transparency and your willingness to interrupt your life to share your family and your journey.

    It's so interesting how many homesteading wives actually hate cooking. I was watching another farmer's wife saying how much she too hates cooking. It's such a huge part of farming that I do wonder how these ladies manage. Personally, I absolutely LOVE cooking and food preservation. The kitchen is my favorite place.

    Alot of people think they are lactose intolerant or allergic to milk who aren't. Thought my youngest son was one of those. The problem was he loved milk and would sneak it. Because his symptoms weren't anaphylactic and he refused to drink fake milks I still kept milk in the house (mostly very phlegmy coughing that lasted an hour or so after drinking. Annoying and not good for him but not deadly). Long story shorter, we found out that if he drank that nasty tasting, blue-tinged non fat milk he was symptom free. Was talking about with hospital coworkers when dietician at next table interjected that he might actually be allergic to an antibiotic instead because the antibiotics used in cattle remain in the fat in milk. Turned out he was allergic to penicillin.
    Later I began dating a dairy farmer and when I was at the farm learning how things worked I found out that he didn't throw out the milk from cows on antibiotics because it would be too costly for them as a business. Yes, it is a law that they have to throw it away. But the inspector would let mom know in advance when the inspections/testing of his milk would be and on those days only he would throw it away. He felt that the processing of the milk eliminated any problems. Don't know whether that was just one bad inspector willing to let a friend know or whether it's standard. But even if you have one bad dairyman and 100 who follow the rules all their milk gets mixed together at the processing plant and even though the bad milk is diluted you may still have non life threatening reactions leading you to believe you are lactose intolerant or allergic.
    We switched to organic milk and no more problems. Would have preferred raw milk like I grew up with but not available in our area.
    After kids moved out I went back to regular milk to save money. Even though I have milder allergies to antibiotics than my son I had never had an issue. Assumed that there just wasn't enough antibiotics to be an issue.
    In the last couple years I began having painful gut issues. When I returned to organic milk those gut issues cleared up.

    • @morethanfarmers
      @morethanfarmers  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wow! This is an amazing testimony! Thank you for taking the time to share it. I've never heard of someone who's actually allergic to the medications given to the cows. It's sobering to hear what's in American food...it's crazy to think that some people are literally getting a dose of penicillin in their diet every day. So glad you're gut issues healed after drinking organic milk. What a blessing!

    I just found you all a couple days ago and really enjoying your channel and I hope you inspire more young people to get out there and grow things., I think you all would enjoy Three Rivers Homestead she has 8 children and seems to balance it all out with homeschooling and food preservation, she may inspire you to fire up that Canner more often. I live in the city but grow as much as I can with the space I have. I am a prepper but not for doomsday scenario's but for natural disasters and financial. I just lost my husband a month ago but am not at all worried about food while processing insurance claims. I have 3 freezers full and canned fruits veggies and meats. I could easily go without shopping for a year if I needed to. I love Broccoli and it's something I buy every week at the store just planted some for a fall crop first time just some generic dollar store seeds to learn how this year but growing it will save me money in the long run. Keep putting those videos out and keep inspiring people to learn. Anna In Ohio
