The pedal-steel legend who's played with everyone from George Strait to Megadeth shares some advice at tackling the hand-jiving, knee-jerking instrument.
A decade ago, Vince Gill and Paul Franklin recorded Bakersfield, a tribute to the raw-boned country music that came out of the rough-and-rowdy clubs patronized by oil-field hands and agricultural workers in the ’50s and early ’60s-packed with songs by Merle Haggard and Buck Owens. And we visited with them for a Rig Rundown then.
Now, just for the good times, these two legends of modern country music-the real deal kind-have recorded Sweet Memories: The Music of Ray Price & The Cherokee Cowboys. Price was known for his warm, baritone approach to melody, which is a perfect springboard for Gill’s and Franklin’s nuanced approaches to their own instruments.
If you don’t know Gill’s work, it’s about time you got informed. He has won more CMA Awards than any performer in history, plus 21 Grammys. He’s also sold more than 21-million albums and is currently in the Eagles, where his sweet tenor voice and skill with harmonies makes him a perfect match. (You can also hear Gill talk about his work on Cory Wong’s Wong Notes podcast, from November 2020.)
Although Franklin spends his time over the pedal steel, this artist is no slouch. He’s played on more than 500 albums, has been named Best Steel Guitarist by the Academy of Country Music multiple times, and is in the Steel Guitar Hall of Fame and the Musician’s Hall of Fame. Franklin is the most nominated artist in CMA history. He is also a member of Grammy-winning outfit the Time Jumpers.
Along with the PG video team, I met them at Gill’s Nashville studio, where they recorded Sweet Memories. The goal: to get a close-up look at Franklin’s steel rig and some of the incredible acoustic guitars Gill used on this album.

Vince is such a great guy. So cool that I get to live just up the street from him.

He always comes across like the guy you know who works at the supermarket. Just kills me though to know that, in addition to being a world-class singer, songwriter, guitar player...he's also a scratch golfer. Like when God was making humans and it got to the talent module, the lever got stuck when Vince came along.

    Vince is a class act.
These guitars are being cared for by a working musician and a kind sole. They are in the right hands.

We have many artists in this world but there is only 1 Vince Gill. His heart for others far outweighs his God given gift of artistry. He is truly a gift to all who have been blessed to meet or know him. Thank you Vince for making our world a little better. May your music live on forever!

Awesome collection, Vince! I hope to one day have some prized guitars like that. My best one so far is a '73 Guild 12-string.

Those early 1970’s Guilds are the best!!! My best acoustic is a 1972 F50M and I’ve got 2 Martins both late 70’s a dbl OO and a D28 still the Guild is my preference by a pretty good margin! It would definitely be the one a grabbed first if my house was on fire!

Always wanted to play like Chet.
Give my left leg just to play like that.
You guitar pickers always sound so wild.
I've wanted to be one every since I was a child.
Daddy's flattop in the night ,
    Always made mama's face light,
When he played old melodies so low and sweet.
I knew that his pickin' was sweepin' her off o' her feet.
I tried and I tried 'til my fingers cried.
    thousand chords
    I had a good teacher-patient and kind,
But guitar pickers are a whole different tribe.

Funny bout folks. My Dad bought me my first guitar. I still have it and would never give up that memory. It was in 1962..my little Gibson. It called it a Spanish guitar. (Acoustic). Paid $40 in a pawn shop. Value is now over $3,000. Thanks Pop

Nice to see a musician who spends his money wisely. The older a guitar gets the more valuable it gets, depending on condition of course. Very wise investment

I’m in the process of getting rid of my collection. Can’t play them all, won’t be able to bring any with me. They need to go where they can all be used and not just hanging up.

    • @RobertFairweatherMusic
      @RobertFairweatherMusic ปีที่แล้ว +3

Material possessions (even guitars) can't come with you. They deserve to played and not wait in line. I cut down from over 50 to to 15. Now it's time to whittle it down to seven. That's enough 'paint brushes' for me for the time being. It's nice to connect with one or two..or three guitars. It ain't fair for the other ones to wait.

same here. collecting turned out to be more work and expense than I would have imagined. hard to figure out which ones to let go though. and yes (before someone mocks me), I realize that isn't a real problem.

Vince you got all the cool guitars! I love Martin guitars and fenders I'd love to be able to play just one of yours. I'm just a working man from Charlottesville Virginia. I've got one Martin and I had to barter for that one. I'm a contractor. One of the many things the Lord blessed me with was the ability to work with my hands. If you ever need an addition or anything fixed look me up. Lol!! Keep getting er done Vince!

I LOVE Vince Gill - BUT I always been of the opinion that truly great guitars (or whatever instrument) should be played, not just dis- played (or packed away, or in a vault, or whatever). Just imho.
