  • Back in 2012 we visited country legend Vince Gill at his home studio in Nashville, TN to check out some of the rarest instruments in his collection of vintage acoustic and electric guitars.
    From the the guitar he learned to play on, his father's vintage Gibson ES-125T, to the 1942 Martin D-28 herringbone he bought at age 18, to his 1960 slab board Fender Stratocaster, Vince shares some of his favorite instruments and the stories behind how he got them.

      ....... I'm untunable... (at least that's what my wife thinks).... You can check out some original music of mine on TH-cam if you like.... I think I'm missing a few strings and the tuners are beyond repair, but one day God is gonna fix me up in Heaven and I'll play better than new up there in Heaven. I even might join some of you players. Cheers.

    I can relate to so much that he said about guitars. They do need to be played and every guitar I own speaks to me in a special way - though differently than the voices in my head :-). Twice I spent every penny on a guitar and have never regretted it. I still have those guitars and we’ve had a great relationship that has lasted decades. The guitars he showed are Martin masterpieces, particularly the 000-45 and OM-45. It’s a joy that someone as famous as Vince Gill still has that pure love for guitars. Bless his wife for buying the OM-45 for him.

    I love his music and he is a great person, but it hurts my heart that so many people in this country have so much money to have so much and there are people that don't have food. People like this could pay our national debt off and never miss it. I did not realize how many rich people there were in this world until I went to gulf shores and worked on the high rise condos when the hurricane came through. The cheapest condo there was a million dollars. That is just one small place and people like this could stop hunger if they would all get together and help.-People tend to get greedy the richer they get. I know he does good things but could do a lot more if they all got together. If my friend was in a bind I would not take his guitar, I would just give or loan him the money, if I had that kind of money. Come on rich people and give me some hate comments. Nobody needs that many guitars.

      I really admire the passion he has for these guitars. They're not just pieces of wood and strings, or museum pieces to him. He truly appreciates them for what they are, and can absolutely play them to their utmost potential. If he were just some rich dude who likes to buy extremely expensive guitars, but couldn't play a lick, then people could hate on him, but that's certainly not the case.

    If you're a musician and you've got the cash there is nothing better than having a collection of instruments, large or small at your disposal. There to play, safeguard and love. We are only visitors to God's beautiful world once, and for a short time. These are the tools of a musicians trade and in the right hands anything is possible.
    A musician friend, no longer here, told me never feel guilty or self doubt ownership of instruments when they are there to be played. That was always enough to reassure me. Thanks Mark. Thanks Vince for kindly taking the time to showing us round yours, we can see you are rightly proud of them.

    I bought a Martin D12-35 new in 1974 and like an idiot, I sold it in 1982 (I needed the money at the time). I always kicked myself for that decision. But then about 2 years ago, I was sitting on the John at work (really) and to ass the time I was browsing through Craigs List on my iPhone. Just for grins I plugged "Martin" into the search window and all of the sudden, there it was - someone about 3 hours south of me selling was selling a 1974 Martin D12-35! The price was actually very reasonable based on similar guitars I'd seen in EBay, so I called the person and told them to consider it sold! I have a 1974 D12-35 again after al those years and I will NEVER sell this one!

      I got a beautiful sunburst Gibson Les Paul standard in 2003 for Christmas from my dad when I was 18, and foolishly (looking back) 5 years later in college I traded it for a Fender 52 reissue hot rod Telecaster because I wanted to play country music at the time but didn’t have the money. I still to this day regret that decision not necessarily for the guitar itself but because it was such an amazing gift from my dad and should’ve held on to it forever. Maybe I’ll find one just like it one day.

    The people that are talking shit about Vince Gill are clearly jealous of him. He's been a very successful musician for many many years, so he has the financial resources to afford such a collection. Remember, I'm sure some of his guitars were free, because all those celebrity guitar players get free instruments, and also, he's worth millions of dollars, so him dropping 75K on a vintage guitar, is like most of us buying a pack of gum, it isn't shit. And lets not forget the insurance claim from those flood damaged instruments he lost, I'm sure that gave him plenty to go do some guitar shopping with.

I am here to say that Vince Gill is for sure one of the chosen few. Vince has more talent is his little finger then most stars out there today. Vince can play any instrument he touches. He can sang like no other. And he has a heart for his fellow man. The man has a love for music instruments. Maybe Vince was born to late in life.Naaa, I think Vince came along at the right moment. He can carry on where Great stars like George Jones and Merle Haggard left off. God Bless You Vince. Please keep the great music and sounds going.

    When I turned 21 (a thousand years ago) my dear mother bought me a mid-range Ibanez acoustic. Nothing special. I took guitar lessons from a guy called Peter Rawkins and he had a great ear. The crappy intonation annoyed him and so he changed the nut and saddle and lowered the action and showed me how to tweak the truss rod and that bloody thing rang like a bell. Still does 37 years later. You can have your pre-war martins and a 100 guitars in drawers (and I’m jealous) but really, you only have two hands and can only play one guitar at a time. When people ask “what’s the best guitar you have ever played?” I say the next one I get to pick up. Such a privilege to just play what you have and enjoy it.

    Neat guy. Neat guitars. Neat video. Don't see too many people like him. I'm mostly agnostic in my old age and I'm not into country/bluegrass/gospel, but I say "God bless/blessed Vince Gill". The world seems a brighter place with him in it. :)

      +Painted Pony Oh, I heard that one too. It hurt. "these are the rarest..." DING. godz..... when you're filthy rich, apparently, banging your rare guitar against something hard isn't an issue. Just a $100,000 guitar, man. C'mon. His wife is rich too so dropping $100,000 for his b'day guitar is like me dropping $100.

    • @ShredCo
      @ShredCo 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Did you hear the sustain off that thing at 03:00? Incredible... never heard that from such a small bodied guitar. Yeah, he seems like a posh nerd. I'd rather not be one of those.

    • @TruthSurge
      @TruthSurge 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Painted Pony Yeah, sustain is a nice thing to have and of course it's a function of how hard the nut/bridge saddles are, how firm the body is and how big the strings are and how far they are from the frets (unless you're hitting an open string). I always used light strings and really low action so my tone and sustain took a major hit hahahha. But you do what you have to. I think Vince is your normal country guy who just happened to learn how to since his ass off with some country/bluegrass tenor and pick a fairly mean Tele/Strat. Then he became rich and married his Christian sweetheart, Amy Grant and now they can pray to God all day for the rest of their lives w/o working and surf eBay for their next 1928 Martin! :)

    Not getting religious or judging here but just think how many people one of those guitars would feed? Like one of them is as valuable as 700k! I mean you can only play one at a time and I'm not perfect by any means but we are all going to die and none of these go with us nor will we be blessed by how much greed we left behind....So why hoard when people are starving to death, or homeless, or just plain broke...I love guitars and can play them too but would not be able to live with myself in such a trade off...

    Vince Gill is an amazing example of how one can become a bonafide star, successful beyond measure, and still remain down-to-earth and sincere. It may seem impossible for one to be showing off a zillion-dollar guitar collection and still appear like a regular guy, but I think a large amount of his success was born out his love for music and he recognizes that.

    Those vintage 000-45 and OM-45 are stunning and sound like something coming off the front porch of Heaven. The triple 0 and OM bodies have always been beautiful and sounded incredible, but that 45 aesthetics combined with their tone are pure works of art. Those are the 1958,59, and 60 Les Paul sunbursts of the acoustic guitar world for me. And he has both! Superb video and while I've never been into country music I can sure step back and appreciate this guy's collection and his passion for finely made guitars.

    Vince came up the hard way in music wondering around bluegrass festivals, bar bands for pizza and beer money in some one horse Oklahoma town. Semi stardom when he got a break to play for PPL. Struggled around Nashville for several years before he started making great songs with his great voice one of the best in music history and the more little known fact about Vince he might be one of the greatest musicians walking on this earth today. He can wear out anything in he puts in his hands from country to rock to bluegrass he's a once in a lifetime talent!
