    For whatever reason I've seen a handful of women get into cycling on a whim and absolutely dominate within a short period of time. The sport needs more of them. Especially since its filled with sweaty dads.

      Endurance cycling is really about pushing through pain. I think women are born with a greater ability to push through pain in preparation or result of child birth.

      They dominate because they have no competition.

    A very inspiring journey to watch. Having been to Leadville back in '04 doing some fishing I had no idea this event existed. Competed years ago in tri's/road cycling and mtn biking this makes me want to train again just to be able to complete it. Got a '18 FHS sixfifty 7500 mtn bike a few months ago. I monitor these folks' progress and hope to be encouraged to enter the lottery for 2024.

    bravo - there are a lot of people out there who've had a rough year (or more). This is a great way to remind and show people that it's important to have an outlet. There's more to cycling than a workout. For a lot of people, cycling is an outlet for mental angst, frustration, and even exhaustion. It's a way to 'reset' your brain. I really love it when cycling content highlights the mental benefits.
    For anyone out there who reads the comments section of TH-cam videos and feels like "they could never do something like this" so why bother. It starts with a ride around the block. Then if you will it, it'll escalate.
    1. This series highlights that races/events like the Leadville 100 are NOT the starting point. There's time and effort put in months in advanced.
    2. F!CK THAT NOISE - you could. Just be smart about it. Develop a plan. Execute the plan. Fail. Develop a new plan! Practice -> Fail -> Learn -> Repeat. It's an iterative process that takes patience and consistency.
    Seriously, good luck to anyone and everyone who's taking on the extra burden of prioritizing their mental health on top of all your other obligations. You're a badass.

    I did it last year for the first time with 6 months of training and it was a serious test/challenge (age 59). I think if you're well trained, however, you can pretty much predict finish time by knowing your w/kg. You lose 20% of your power b/c of altitude, making weight more important than ever.

    • @liam2134
      @liam2134 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I do not understand your claim that altitude makes weight matter more. if everyone is losing 20% of their power, which is not happening as people spend differing times acclimating, then everyone's w/kg is being affected the exact same. For example, a 58kg person who expects they could hold 200 watts (3.44 w/kg) for Leadville duration at sea level would then adjust that target power to 160 watts (2.76). A 73 kg rider who expects the same w/kg pacing at sea level would have to put out 252 watts (3.44 w/kg) and after the 20% reduction to the power would be at 201 watts or the exact same w/kg as the 58kg rider post reduction, 2.76 w/kg.
      I know that is a lot of numbers but the cliff notes are as follows. If you lose 20% of your power you are also losing 20% of your w/kg. So losing 20% of your power doesn't make weight more important on the basis that w/kg is everything (which you essentially said when you said "you can pretty much predict finish time by knowing your w/kg".

      Trails at elevation with big vert is very different than a flat road century. Didn’t you know?

    • @koi-pond
      @koi-pond ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rhejamphi Again... Anyone, with a few months training can do it. I live at sea level and have skied in CO off the Imperial Express and cycled across the continental divide. Elevation or not its only 100 miles.

    • @rhejamphi
      @rhejamphi ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@koi-pond I have both skied breck and built a cabin at 11k feet while marathon and ultra trail running. I've also section hiked the cdt through co and wy multiple times. Dude, mountain miles are not the same as road miles. Especially for middle aged office workers that haven't done anything serious athletically in years or their whole life. Maybe you are superhuman, but calling these people's effort a joke is so backwards. You are an outlier in this opinion among all the trail folk I know.

    • @koi-pond
      @koi-pond ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rhejamphi I agree MTB and road miles are not the same & OK so I am an outlier. Still that does not change my opinion, which I am allowed to have that right? This a a 100 mile ride, keep grinding it out and U finish.

      @@koi-pond except you can’t just keep grinding it out until you finish because there are cut off times! You miss the cutoff and you are done. No exceptions.
