      I think it's perfect for a BBEG plan yeah! I was thinking of having it like a ticking clock, the party has to kill the BBEG before the 120 day gestation time on the clone was up otherwise they'd go full gold dragon and be unstoppable, and there's only 1 day left! And then of course when they succeed the BBEG soul passes into an incomplete Gold Dragon clone and he's birthed as a horrifying, incomplete monstrosity with wild bursts of magic exploding from his necrotic, half-living, unnatural form. And that's your REAL final boss. Anyway, that was just my idea, if it's helpful for your campaign!

    I actually managed to do this as a level 9 monk. Our party found a genie and it agreed to grant a Wish. I wish to be a gold dragon as my character wanted to become a dragon. Our DM said I could only be a young dragon as my character would still be as old as he was. I said okay. Little bit later I went ahead in search of some Ghosts. I purposefully failed the Horrifying Visage checks and got aged to 100 years and killed the ghosts. Next morning I was an adult.

    Then learn true polymorph as a gold dragon. Step one again, when you feel yourself growing elderly (dragons seem like, but are not immortal) true polymorph yourself into literally anything. Wait an hour, glyph of warding and clone for a younger version what ever you are, wait 120 days. Repeat. Experience every walk of life as every living and unliving thing in the multiverse.
    Edit: the 120 days is time in my library (that I build in my lair) getting my wizard levels back. Also obviously we intersperse things we don’t want all of the beast clones right next to each other that could really mess things up.

    • @Reous
      @Reous 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @Jack It's not generally considered good to try and derail your DM's game. The overall point is to have fun, if something you do as a player would possibly stop the fun for others, then you are just being a douche. If the DM allows it, he is going to have to adjust to make the game challenging enough for you or suffer watching you steam roll his campaign, which would quickly not be fun for anyone but you. Its not only up to the DM to keep the campaign fun but players as well, you can just as easily screw everything with a careless action. While it is impressive to pull off something this complex to pull off, DM's are given power to change the rules for a reason. I have seen many groups fall apart because of thing like this, I certainly would try to discourage this or possibly add some checks that you would have to pass for it to work. Also I think True Poly only works for up to medium creatures but I could be wrong.

      I realize this is just the comment section of youtube and my thoughts mean nothing, but i have quit playing with players and dms that make it a competition between dm and player. One person in particular basically attempts to lord his "vast knowledge and experience" over everyone. I ran a lvl 20 one shot for a group of friends and he came to the table and did an obnoxious over done evil laugh....he said his character was immune to fear fighting a pit fiend and had some ridiculous combo that was basically the equivalent of a "watch me play magic" deck. I looked at the other players and they were just as fed up as i was so i made up a special wrinkle that gave the pit fiend the blessing of asmodeus so he had a on off switch for an unblockable, targeted frightful presence. Being a devil and all, the pit fiend recognized a soul he would have a ton of fun torturing, he just spammed frightful presence on the douche player. Everyone laughed and had a great time watching him spend his entire turn running away the rest of the night. I didn't tell him it was unsavable, he was just rolling like crap so it was hilarious. It was great fun, except for douchebag. Which is exactly what he deserved. We no longer play with him. We still hang out and talk about dnd, and if his attitude ever changes he'll be welcome back, but he's just a douchy dnd player so i doubt it ever will.

    Since an errata to the way Polymorph works you don't get the legendary actions when you take the Gold Dragon's form sadly. I based this combo on the Roll20 page for the spells, but apparently the DnD app has updated versions. But hey, you don't need Legendary Actions to be a freaking powerhouse as a gold dragon! Bonus points for waiting 1000 years to become ancient for dat tasty CR boost!

    • @supersmily5811
      @supersmily5811 3 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      Nothing about the way Clone works suggests it can work with a polymorphed form. If it could duplicate your stats exactly, you could use Shapechange instead for the combo and possibly keep your spellcasting capabilities. Additionally, using True Polymorph on yourself prevents you from being able to undo the form at will, since you lose access to your spellcasting. You can somewhat get around this with Glyph of Warding Dispel Magic, assuming that no one triggers the glyph on themselves first (This could be avoided with a proper trigger). But if your gambit worked then you wouldn't be polymorphed anymore, and the form couldn't be dispelled.
      So in other words, you're close, oh so very close. But I think the Dragon Wizard Gambit is still not quite cracked yet.

    I've found a HUGE (not Medium) problem with this method.
    The 'Clone' spell specifies that "This spell grows a inert duplicate of a living, Medium creature as a safeguard against death. This clone forms inside a sealed vessel and grows to full size and maturity after 120 days; you can also choose to have the clone be a younger version of the same creature."
    You try to circumvent this by casting the 'Clone' while you're a Medium creture and storing it with a 'Glyth of Warding' to activate once you have transformed into an Adult Gold Dragon, growing a duplicate of you in that form. What you failed to consider is that the 'Clone' spell also specifies that the material components that you need to cast this spell includes, among other things "at least 1 cubic inch of flesh of the creature that is to be cloned, which the spell consumes..."
    This would mean that you would need 1 cubic inch of flesh of the creature that is to be cloned (that would be your character) when you're casting the 'Clone' spell as part of creating the 'Glyth of Warding'. At this point it is already decided what creature is to be grown. If you used flesh of your character as an Adult Gold Dragon when casting the clone spell, it wouldn't work since it needs to be of a Medium creature to grow a duplicate.
    If you used your characters original flesh when casting the 'Clone' spell, it would grow a duplicate of THAT creature when the spell triggers and would not care that you have transformed into a Adult Gold Dragon since then.
    I suppose what you could do is transforming yourself into a Gold Dragon Wyrmling (that is a Medium creature) take 1 cubic inch of flesh of yourself in this form and use it as material for the 'Clone' spell and grow a duplicate of a Gold Dragon Wyrmling, let it grow for 120 day, kill yourself and have your soul transfer into the dublicate of you as Gold Dragon Wyrmling. It would take an addtional 100 years to become a Adult Gold Dragon, but maybe that could work. I'm not entirely sure.

    This is EXACTLY what one of my players did. She was a non-combatant (mostly) who specialized in Blacksmith, Alchemy, Enchanter, and Craftsman. Using those skills, she augmented her dragon with retractable jets and added metal, polymorphic prosthetic arms that can transform into giant, melee weapons, "towering" shields, and/or siege cannons. I had her fight 3 Tarrasques at the same time, but she still one-sided that awesome battle.
    To this day, I keep an eye out on my non-combatant players.

      At any time after the clone matures, if the original creature dies, its soul transfers to the clone, provided that the soul is free and willing to return. The clone is physically identical to the original and has the same personality, memories, and abilities, but none of the original’s equipment. Watching this made me remember. "You got what you wanted, but you lost what you had." You are now indeed an adult gold dragon but you are no longer whatever race you where adventures just wont be the same knowing you now have what you wanted but lost the life you had.

      That and you also wouldnt have any of your spells that got you to this point you are just a gold dragon.

    I like this setup a good stroy line of a NPC attempting to trying to ascend its power. And the party has to try to figure out what the npc is trying to do, stop their process or have to deal with the consequences. Thanks for idea !

    Step 8: get immediately disintegrated by Ao's single thought when you enter his primary domain as a dragon.

      Best case scenario if Ao does not simply "swipe left" when a random error blip appears in his farts trail, as he usually does not give a f... about most things - become immediate blip on the radar of ALL other dragons who won't be super into "mortal imposter among us" thing.

    That's having a lot of trust that your dm won't see this as an opportunity to say "the clone spell goes awry because of weird high-level magic interactions that the creators of the spells did not account for. You are now a horribly disfigured (but shiny!) Kobold"
