    long stroke = piston has same travel distance as the bolt carrier. clearly not the case.

    • @hendriktonisson2915
      @hendriktonisson2915 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Also to my knowledge on long stroke gas systems the gas piston is attached to the bolt carrier as is like for example on the AK rifles.

  • @user-yb3rs5wh6z
    @user-yb3rs5wh6z 2 ปีที่แล้ว +53

    I’d have to disagree with Larry’s statement about the rifle being “long stroke”. The implications of long stroke, to me, is that the piston/ op rod is attached to the bolt carrier and travels with the carrier. Example most recognizable being the AK or Garand. In the FALs case the piston only pushes against the carrier. I’d argue that it is a short stroke, just as the actions of many other guns, namely the FN49, AR18.

    • @thorsenst
      @thorsenst 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      I think it's more an issue of the op-rod doesn't travel the full distance of the bolt's travel. I also disagree that it's a long travel piston. I think because it travels less than half the bolts total travel it's a short stroke system. I don't think that it necessarily has to be fixed to the bolt carrier though. Also I don't know of any long stroke systems where the piston/op rod isn't attached to the bolt carrier by some method.

    • @CenturionStrategic
      @CenturionStrategic 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      You're correct, Larry's wrong. It's a short stroke gas piston.

    • @zx7-rr486
      @zx7-rr486 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, it is indeed a short stroke op/rod piston. You can see clearly in the slow motion vids that the rod only protrudes about an inch and catapults the bolt carrier all the way back with momentum.

  • @DesertAvenger
    @DesertAvenger 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    how in the hell is the FAL long-stroke when your own high speed footage shows it's short-stroke?

    • @supernice8887
      @supernice8887 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      True

    • @Hibernicus1968
      @Hibernicus1968 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I'm guessing that he is basing on the fact that the operating rod appears to push back farther than it does in most short stroke designs -- nearly the length of a full cartridge here, it looks like. But it's still not quite the length of a full cartridge, and a long stroke piston travels the same distance as the bolt carrier group, and in every long stroke design I am aware of, is actually attached to the bolt carrier group. This is a short stroke piston system.

    • @Xerxes1688
      @Xerxes1688 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      True, while it does travel farther back than some other similar designs (eg: VZ 58 or the SKS), since it's not attached to the bolt carrier is considered as a short stroke type.

    • @MellowFellowOfYellow
      @MellowFellowOfYellow 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A long vs short stroke piston is based on how far the carrier travels along with the piston itself. The FAL is in no way a long stroke piston.

      @farmerbrown84 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It struggles against a modern AR-308 type rifle, mainly because of poorer ergonomics leading to slower manipulations and a lack of ability to easily optical devices. Oh, and weight. But 7.62 NATO is still 7.62 NATO and it's still an effective cartridge. But the fact is that any iron-sighted rifle is obsolescent in this day and age. With some slight upgrades (say like Spuhr did for the G3) and an appropriate optic, then they can again be pretty effective weapons.

    Short Stroke Piston by definition means the bolt carrier group is bit connected to the piston, like the FAL, G36, AR-18, SKS. (M1 carbine and SCAR technically are tappet drives, though principle is similar)
    Although I agree, a well tuned reliable short stroke system will travel with the BCG for the longest amount of time. The term “Short Stroke” I would argue is poor to describe the mechanism. Better I would say is “connected piston” like for an AK “transferred piston” for an G36, “Integral piston” for the AR-15. Tappet Drive and Direct Impingment I still agree are relevant.

    I own several, and to this day, it's the best .308 platform rifle, in my opinion. We were nuts to have gone with the M1A, but alas, we did.

      Definitely better than the M14 but not better than AR-10 in my opinion. The tilting bolt is a major disadvantage of the FAL because it can be so inconsistent across ammo loads and doesn't do well with shorter barrel lengths.

    Mid 70's I modified Gawd knows how many SLR's with the synthetic furniture. All the wooden items were skipped, apart from some butts made into cribbage score keepers!
    I wish I had kept some of the wooden bits, seemed we were cheapening the weapons somehow!

    It's not a long stroke gas piston. It's absolutely a short stroke gas piston.
    Long stroke means the gas piston is attached to the carrier and travels the full length of the reciever hence the name long stroke like the AK47, M1 garand, and BAR
    Short stroke means the piston only travels a short distance and isn't connected to the carrier case and point the the SVT and SKS

    Ex British Army and this is roughly the weapon we carried. Deadly accurate but a POS in the dirt. The parts are so perfectly machined that it doesn't take a lot of sand or muck to jam this rifle up. That being said a great all around weapon that deserves its reputation.

    • @wolfgang_h3t
      @wolfgang_h3t 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      DSA has all the original tooling tmk, whereas PSA obviously doesn't. I'd personally prefer if they would fix their AK's issues, at least to a similar standard to their ARs first before going the FAL route anyways lol

    3:11 if im not mistaken the select fire versions look identical? I'm guessing the "A" position just doesn't work on this one? Because I've definitely seen select fire versions that had the SRA selector positions just like this one. Also the FAL doesn't use a long stroke gas piston its a short stroke piston.

    Excellent for one handed carry movement in short distance maneuvering. Especially if the rifle has a bipod that is deployed.
