  • Customer complains of breaking up or misfires WOT, various RPM's but always starts around 4,500 and gets worse at around 8K. NEVER any other RPM ranges. Always the same. Is it fuel or ignition? We try and figure it out.

My guess it needs the needle lifted. That changes the cruise midrange pwr. Lower the clip raise the needle or If it's not adjustable try shim them.

I forgot to say that I had already done that, it's second to the bottom now, that should be fine. Thanks for the suggestion.

Don’t forget you can sometimes shim the needle to richen it up in the mid range. I would probably go with a 120 main I never had problems running a bit rich on the main circuit especially on an air cooled bike

I forgot to mention I had already raised the needle when it was here before, kind-of anticipating a possible problem mid-range. I may try the 120's because I think I have four in stock, I have to check. The two things that bother me: 1. it did not run this way when I finished the main service of carb clean and getting it back running. And that was after putting the K and N filter in. 2. Up-jetting what I did do, made zero impact, not even a smidge, where typically I'd see at least some improvement. I mean, it's exactly the same issues. Very weird. Thanks for the suggesitons.

i had one of them bikes and the ignition module would do that not break down but do a little misfire even the kawasaki mechanic though it was the module but it was very expensive and he had no way of testing the old one I just bit the bullet and got a new one and all was good hope this helps a bit i know how frustrating a problem like this can be

Not this time, this one was on me. I think I checked ignition and it was fine.

Any solutions on this bike so far, Have you looked at the valves? Float settings?

If Tom can't fix it , it's broke.

Specially since I did the "broke"... . lol.. Thanks.

If it happens at a particular RPM regardless of throttle position then its probably not the carbs. Those coils if they are original to the bike are almost 40 years old now. Even with low miles, I'm not sure I would trust them. Usually most of the suspected carb problems on my old Z1000s or GPZs were something else. I'm sure you'll get to the bottom of it.

Agree. Again, my initial feeling was ignition. But truthfully that stage 1 sort of mod really needs some additional fuel. Jetting is quick and easy usually figure I’d try that. The issue is only with heavy throttle. Where the stress on the ability to rapidly ignite the mixture is greatest. Years ago my KZ650 which was podded and jetted with a Kerker exhaust, did the exact same thing at heavier throttle started missing bad. Turned out to be a bad plug. I’m communicating with Dynotek now to get 2.2 ohm coils and some of their plug wires. Thanks for watching and commenting.
