  • Shallow walleye patterns through mid summer. Jason Mitchell breaks down the details for catching walleyes in weeds on Devils Lake, North Dakota in this how-to video.
Casting crank baits near weeds can be extremely effective through the summer and can sometimes be overlooked. Cranks trigger strikes when water temps warm up and also cover water fast. The flash, vibration and water displacement can also pull fish out of weeds. In this video, we use the Northland Rumble Shad to catch fish off the edges of cabbage, coontail and milfoil.
Lush green weeds produce oxygen, provide shade and cover and will hold a percentage of walleye all summer. These locations often produce a nicer average size of fish. This video explains what types of locations to look for come midsummer along with the mentality necessary for catching walleye in shallow weeds. These patterns continually change as the height of weeds change through the summer so anglers must continually adapt.

Awesome video Jason! I learned this technique from your videos and apply it on the lakes we fish in Northern Wisconsin. I still can't get over how fired up these fish are in the weeds!

Do you think there are shallow walleye all summer on Sakakawea, particularly the Van Hook Arm, or is that more of a transient phenomenon dependent on wind formed mudlines?

Fish move much more in reservoirs where as lake fish will tend to find a home. There are often shallow patterns all summer long if the water is coming up or if there is wind but it changes and moves more.

With so much weed how do you know where to cast so you don't reel back wads of weeds. Even when using my side imaging it's still difficult to know exactly where the weeds are.

You can physically see the weeds right now so I am just clipping the edges. You will have to feel your way through it. If the weeds are growing half way up, find something that runs over the top.

@JasonMitchellOutdoors casting cranks or jigging a lighter jig head with a crawler will work too? You also mentioned even on days that are 80 degrees out these walleye will stay in weeds shallow? I thought fish don't like it too warm.

@@bad_vaporizer lakes can vary but on Devils Lake and many other lakes, the fish will tuck into the shade. A jig and half crawler can be deadly. I often use the crank or swimbait to fish through big spots but a jig or slip bobber can work good once you find fish.

When you fish weed walleyes, do they mostly stay in the windy side of the lake?

Wind can help but I find that these fish are just living on a spot regardless of wind. Too strong of wind can sometimes push shallow fish out of weeds. I like a light chop but the water is so stained now that you don’t need wind to break up light or hide your presence.
