The Turin Horse came back to mind while watching tonight the boiling potatoes on the stove.. Nothing for me to add more.. Its a piece of art!
This film reminded me so much of growing up helping run the family business. It was tough, hot, outdoor work 6 to 7 days a week. Then go home, do nothing and get ready for the next day. Year after year. No holidays, no birthdays, no rainy day fun days. Only guilt and hatred towards the world. Had to get a second and third job to pay rent because the family business was pro bono. This film really hit hard to what life really is like, and that there is nothing to look forward too.
Would you still say that description reflects your life now?
I hope your current life improves from your childhood....
I literally have no idea why this film captivated me the way it did, and how entranced and taken aback I was by it. It's so... haunting, so beautiful, so poetically somber and melancholic
Truly brilliant film. One of the best I've seen in a long time.
I really liked this musical piece and the fact that it keeps repeating through the film over and over.
Get the beers in lads. I know what we're watching this Friday night!
Film Buffs are a rare breed and it can be a lonley life. No one I know would like this film where as I loved it.
lmao

The mistake many seem to make is that they dive into films like this expecting to be entertained, which is ridiculous.
so what the fuck are movies for ???
ikchyadhari baagh I dunno, enlightenmen maybe. That's fairly subjective in my opinion. The movie doesn't owe you anything, let alone entertainment.
Well said!
Fuck you
Meister Film You look more confused than enlighted. Its only boring movies that don't owe us entertainment.
If someone wants to see what the Apocalypse is like, I would advise her / him to watch The Turin Horse. It is not good to experience Tarr's movie, i agree, and I only saw it twice because it makes you very depressed and hopeless. But Béla Tarr's movies have never been about entertainment. They were about pain and the dark side of human nature which you sometimes should watch to evaluate humanity and try to detect the cause of the social and existential problems of people.
What other movie do you suggest from Tarr's movie?
@@mhnoni Elephant sitting still (Hu-Bo is student of Bella Tarr)
@@shahrock6969 Thanks, I will check it.
The way you described, i must watch this movie.
@@shahrock6969
Hu bo off himself after releasing the film, it was tragic.
Poverty,Lonliness,Pain. The sadest move i have ever seen makes you feel empty in a way i cant even explain. A brilliant movie
I don't know why this film has captivated me, it's so beautifully and creatively made. Bela Tarr is so creative and genius.
This is the bleakest film I think ever made. Bela Tarr is an absolute master at shattering your soul open to lay bare for all to see. Not an easy watch, do not go in expecting to be entertained, this is not that kind of film. This is art, and like all good art it rewires your brain in a fundamental way, stripping you of your existing beliefs and causing you to re-evaluate your humanity. A transcendent experience that rewards those willing to embrace it.
This trailer is just crazy beautiful.
It said nothing though, what is this movie about?
@@kmorehouse89 “The movie chronicles the daily routines of an aging father (Janos Derzsi) and his adult daughter (Erika Bok) as they scrape together a meager life of subsistence: caring for their horse, chopping wood, boiling and eating two potatoes each day. Life has been made even more difficult by the relentless windstorm barrelling across their barren land, sending leaves swirling and dusting the sky into an indiscriminate gray (the film is shot in black and white).”
@@guest920Actually, it's about much more than that - you're describing what's on the surface. This is not a movie to say what it's about in the traditional sense as it's not that kind of movie. However it is "about" something. If you're looking for a traditional plot, you won't find it.
"Too much wind" - IGN
This was my most venerably cinema-experience in 23 years of being. I strongly hope to get the chance to watch the other outstanding movies of this genius *in cinema*!
Try to watch some Tarkovsky movies.
Just try Hard to be a god
Man oh man I just can’t say anything bad about Bela Tarr, pure cinema this film is a masterpiece and that score just epic
I just saw this. I'm trying my best not to cry. This is somehow shaking all my beliefs.
poor girl
It's telling the truth. The most profound and most absolute truth. How? The dialogues (and monologues) are key.
stop being so posh. It's just a movie.
🤣🤣🤣🤦♂️🤦♂️
@@manuel_cojocaru
Exactly right! A real bundle of laughs to go to the Cinema with that girl 🤪🤦♂️!! Probably interprets the "DIE HARD" films as "Man's inner concept to do good against the impulsive struggles to create turmoil"!!!🤯🤯🤷♂️.🤣!!
Only the scene that the girl is walking in the desert is enough for explaining human's state in the universe. Tarr's movies are beyond cinema
Came here to see that opening shot of the horse marching into the wind. Unreal.
- How much wind do you want?
Béla Tarr: YES!
I can't believe I just watched a cellphone ad with people complaining about the speed of their phones before this video
Genuinely the most depressing and haunting film I've ever seen. Hope to watch Satantango - and be depressed for 7 HOURS! YAYYY
After watching this piece of art I think, Bergman movies are comedies. "The Turin Horse" is intricate. Most of people are not understand this film. Mr. Tarr I'm very impressed.
This movie is so simple yet so brutal. I always recommend it to my fellow Americans who believe life and society is on the decline and that it should revert "back to the way it was."
and to the invaded Ukrainians who think the same thing?
@@tithonusandfriends8519 Ukraine is not the only country suffering in this world. Just goes to show how selective our empathy really is, the same thing with Iran. We let the media channel our emotions for their own cold and selfish purpose, not actually caring for either women in Iran or the people of Ukraine.
As an American, the life in the Turin Horse is wayyy more preferable.
lol. So cringe.
Metaphorical for any number of interpretations, the film serves as a culmination of Tarr’s cinematic ideas throughout his career and offers viewers an extended study of philosophical conundrums as put into cinematic language.
I'm taking a History of International film class. It's changing my life. I can't wait to see this film
There is something about this movie which makes us look inside ourselves.. and the lies that we live in.Devastatingly good.
The woman in this, the daughter of the old man, is played by the same person who played the young girl to devastating effect in Satantango. I recognized her immediately. Her entire acting resume is three films of Bela Tarr.
What’s her name?
@@robertloader9826 Erika Bok.

I feel you man
So do I...
This film haunts me. I have had nightmares about it. It follows me. Every now and then I recall it followed by bouts of melancholy. I both hate and love this film yet somehow I wish to forget it entirely.
Absolute masterpiece. 🖤
does the horse get abused?
"A Real Bummer." - The Denver Post
At least they didn't write "shit sandwich". That's a little worse.

does the horse get abused? I loved satantango but the cat scene was painful to watch, even knowing it was okay in real life...
Hardly the most radical film ever made. But, yes, it is a very memorable, wonderful work. Tarr did it again.
Even the trailer was more effective than the entirety of most films.
WOW!!! It's a unique and haunting film, like a filming of a near-wordless play of Beckett, stained with an indelible sadness and regret that our world cannot be saved from darkness. Worth watching. I used boxxy software as usual.
I don't understand how people can be bored on this planet. Life is short and they are bored.
SloveintzWend are you a teenager or something?
Kanye East
What are you, grandpa waiting for grim reaper?
I'm not mocking you, it was actually a serious inquiry.
Kanye East
No I'm not and aren't teenagers usually bored as hell?
Not everybody has the freedom to do what they want to freely ya feel me.
Well considering those films were made in close proximity to each other, in a time where this type of cinema was more embraced, "The Turin Horse" is more radical concerning the context in which it was created. In this day and age of rapid fire editing and television, where hollywood has gotten the blockbuster down to a science and embraces new digital technology, "The Turin Horse" stands alone in it's defiance. That's pretty radical.
Loved the music!
...and as usual they pick out the most action-packed scenes to use in the trailer, so they can sell the movie to the MTV generation.
'They' didn't with this.
Relax lol

I just want to add that, there are repetitions of actions, but never receptions of the same gestures. And, also, I think that´s evident that the visitor that appears is the personification of Nietzsche.
A mastership of the notion of time: slowly, contemplative. An OST which is a masterpiece. Amazing actors.
The thing that blowed me away was the simple prove of the fragility of the human being toward animal and nature (horse and wind).
MASTERPIECE! - PLEASE WATCH ONLY IN THE VERY BEST MOVIETHEATRES
Don't get me wrong; 'The Turin Horse' is a sublime film. I saw it for the first time yesterday and will watch again tomorrow (and probably again the next day!). I just think it's difficult to speak in hyperbole about "the most ___ ever." Even in the Tarr oeuvre, I think even 'Satantango' is more "radical" in terms of its non-linear structure. But this recent (and final?) edition might be Tarr's most memorable. Time will tell.
Cinema is not for everyone
@Pele Gacinovic exactly.
@Peter Kelner XD pretentious cinema is not for everyone to be precise
You'll like the film. Just be patient with it. You will need to concentrate.
You really must have a alot of courage to watch this movie, its so boring yet fascinating
exactly
I didn't find it boring at all - also it had some of the most amazing images that I've seen in any film in a long time. Considering the average shot was 300 seconds long and the typical Hollywood film shot is 2 seconds long, I like it because it lets you take your time with what you're seeing, and what you're seeing is quite beautifully done despite the bleakness.
La merveille des merveilles..
That scene when he first saw the gypsies are coming was pure art.
Yeah, that's pretty much the gist of it..yet, somehow, it's still utterly amazing.
I loved the score in this

By far the darkest film I've ever seen.
Antichrist was quite dark, but it was so by being shocking. This movie has no shocking scenes, just pure depression and pain.
Antichrist was disturbing af but this is way more darker because of both the theme and the atmosphere.

I think Béla Tarr e Bergman though work on the same matter, the depth of the human nature, do it in a different way. In this case I felt that Tarr wanted those 2 1/5 hours to emphasize the persistence of the human survival.
I get real tired of pretentious critics trying to make something out of nothing. Experimental/artistic film makers get away with producing drivel only by using the naiveté and over-active imagination of viewers too afraid to look unsophisticated by telling the truth. I've gone to a number of such festivals and all I can say is that if you ever worry about having psychological problems, watch some of these experimental films. You will suddenly realize how normal you are.
I would love to see a movie based on Nietzsche's life. That's the lure that got me to watch the film. Don't be fooled. This is a misinterpretation of Nietzsche as looked at through the lens of existentialism. Nietzsche looked upward, not downward. Read Zarathustra. Sure, he criticized the fact that noble natures have been subsumed by Christian values, but that was because he reached for those higher values. This film glorifies the mundane. Nietzsche would never have done that.
After an hour of watching people eat a potato (utter nonsense), or enjoying the thrill of a wild trip to the well to get water, the film's most dramatic moment arrives. On a particularly exciting evening when the near-mute father and daughter are watching clothes dry (I only wish I was making this up) a guest arrives. He spouts off some viewpoints that are obliquely Nietzshean and leaves. Then, it's back to the potatoes, wind, dismal music, and clothes drying. The film follows six days in the lives of the world's most vegetative humans. In truth, you would get more emotional angst from a celery stalk. It is not filmed in real time, but it feels as though it is.
Oh yeah, the horse. The horse supplies the intellectual content for the film. The horse dreams of having an opposable thumb so that he can pick up a pistol and shoot himself. Since he cannot, he develops an elaborate scheme of making his owner so angry that the owner will do this for him. Alas, the plan goes awry when the owner realizes he is trapped in a huge philosophical dilemma: If I shoot the horse, I have no horse. To be or not to be, that is the farmer's question. Eventually, the horse, being a true stoic, understands that he can only control himself and not others. He, thus, decides to starve himself to death, as death by boredom would take too long. Does the horse succeed? Watch this two and a half hour film to find out.
So, in short, if you feel you have done something wrong and deserve to be punished, watch this film. Your sins and those of all your ancestors will be forgiven. Thus spake Zarathustra.
This is an interesting observation
It's not for the feebleminded opulent westerners who think artistic expression is when captain America punches Thanos that's for sure

i don't thik so. the movie is actually too action packed.
In this way, I do not know nothing equivalent. Bergman worked with the human fragility in a different form.
You must see this.
